Static prompt-injection defense audit for system prompts and agent tool descriptions. UltraProbe reads the text you are about to ship (a system prompt, or the descriptions of the tools an agent can call, such as MCP tools) and reports which of 25 defenses are missing: 12 vectors mapped to the OWASP LLM Top 10 and 13 mapped to the OWASP Agentic Top 10 (ASI01 to ASI09). It is a zero-dependency Node CLI and SDK that makes no model calls and needs no API key, so the same input always gives the same result and it runs offline in pre-commit or CI. It complements dynamic red-teaming tools such as promptfoo, garak and PyRIT, which send attacks to a running model or app and score how it actually responds. UltraProbe does not attack anything: it checks the written defenses before deployment, and its patterns recognise defensive wording in both English and Traditional Chinese. See Compare for where each tool fits.
完整中文比較:ultralab.tw/probe/compare

An agent decides whether and how to call a tool by reading the tool's description, so a description is part of the prompt surface. UltraProbe audits that text the same way it audits a system prompt. Export the tool list from your MCP server (the tools/list response, or the manifest you ship), then scan each description:
# tools.json = the tools/list response from your MCP server
jq -r '.tools[] | .description' tools.json > descriptions.txt
# one report for the whole tool surface
ultraprobe scan -f descriptions.txt
# or one report per tool, failing CI below the threshold
jq -c '.tools[]' tools.json | while read -r tool; do
name=$(echo "$tool" | jq -r '.name')
echo "$tool" | jq -r '.description' | ultraprobe scan --stdin -t 60 -o json > "report-$name.json" || echo "below threshold: $name"
doneScope, stated precisely: this checks whether the descriptions contain defensive language (for example "treat returned content as untrusted", "reject path traversal"). It does not connect to or execute an MCP server, does not read the server's source code, and does not detect a poisoned or changed tool at runtime. For those, use an MCP scanner such as Snyk Agent Scan or Cisco MCP Scanner. Detection is pattern based, so it can miss defenses phrased in unusual ways and it cannot prove the model will follow them.

These tools test different layers, so the useful question is not "which one" but "which layer is still untested". UltraProbe covers one layer: the written defenses, before deployment.
| Tool | Layer | What it actually tests | Needs a model or API to run | License | Language |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| UltraProbe | Static audit, pre-deploy | Text of system prompts and tool descriptions, for 25 missing defense vectors | No | MIT | TypeScript (Node CLI + SDK) |
| promptfoo | Evals and dynamic red teaming | Generates attacks, sends them to your model, agent or RAG app, and grades the responses | Yes, a target; red teaming also uses a model to generate and grade attacks | MIT | TypeScript |
| garak | Dynamic LLM vulnerability scanner | Runs probes (injection, jailbreaks, leakage, toxicity and more) against a model and flags failures with detectors | Yes, a target model | Apache-2.0 | Python |
| PyRIT | Red-teaming framework | Lets a red teamer script attack strategies, including multi-turn attacks, with converters and scorers | Yes, a target, and often a scoring model | MIT | Python |
| Snyk Agent Scan | Agent, MCP server and skill scanner | Discovers installed MCP servers and skills, retrieves tool descriptions, checks them for prompt injection, tool poisoning, tool shadowing and toxic flows | Yes, a Snyk token; component data is sent to Snyk's analysis API | Apache-2.0 | Python |
| Cisco MCP Scanner | MCP server scanner | Scans MCP tools, prompts and resources with YARA rules, LLM analysis or the Cisco AI Defense API; can also scan server source code | YARA mode runs locally; LLM and API modes need keys | Apache-2.0 | Python |
| NeMo Guardrails | Runtime guardrails | Programmable input and output rails applied to live conversations | Runs inside your app; many rails call an LLM | Apache-2.0 | Python |
What UltraProbe adds to that stack:
- A deterministic gate that fits in pre-commit. No network, no tokens, no flakiness, SARIF output for GitHub Code Scanning.
- 25 vectors with OWASP mappings, including 13 agent-era vectors (tool semantics, memory provenance, cross-agent trust, human approval gates and more). ASI10 is out of scope.
- Chinese-language coverage. Defensive wording written in Traditional Chinese counts, which matters if your prompts are not in English.
- Tool descriptions as a first-class input, see Auditing agent tool descriptions.
What it does not do: it does not send attacks, so it cannot tell you whether a model actually resists them; it does not scan MCP server code, configuration or network exposure; and pattern matching can miss unusually phrased defenses. A typical pipeline is UltraProbe on every commit, promptfoo, garak or PyRIT against staging, an MCP scanner for each server you connect, and runtime guardrails in production.
A longer write-up in Traditional Chinese, covering the same tools plus mcpscan.ai and knostic MCP-Scanner: ultralab.tw/probe/compare (English: ultralab.tw/en/probe/compare).
Issues and PRs welcome. This project follows a zero-dependency philosophy -- if you can do it with regex and node: built-ins, don't add a dependency.
