I don't really have a lot to go on, but it looks like the build directory was never made. That's normally something that setuptools handles. It could be a permission issue, or some sort of full file system. How are you installing this -- what's the command line you're using?

The directory created ... i can saw it with ls but it cleared after error.
No permission issue, the user is creating directory where he can do it.
The disk is full only on 12% (df).

I installing it with pip install Pillow.
I can install 2.0, 2.5.0 but cant install 2.6.1 it issue error.

In one VPS environment I could not install current version of Pillow on Ubuntu 14.04 due to memory allocation problem. Compiler complains with something like:

cc1: out of memory allocating 2008 bytes after a total of 270336 bytes

The strange thing is there is more memory available than needs to be allocated:

    $ free -m
total used free shared buffers cached
    Mem: 1024 322 701 3 0 284
    -/+ buffers/cache: 37 986
    Swap: 256 0 256

This only affected versions 2.5.* and 2.6.* but not 2.3.*

It might be the multi threaded build. Try setting an environment variable:

    export MAX_CONCURRENCY=1

@wiredfool yes indeed! I thought I'd go mad today. Thank you!

@proft Which compiler version do you have? (cc --version) Does it work if you set this environment variable?

    export MAX_CONCURRENCY=1

@hugovk my version of compiler is cc (Ubuntu 4.8.2-19ubuntu1) 4.8.2
In my situation the issue was bad setup of vds by support.
