Fixes #10944.

RenameAlias in apply_alias_actions only checked that the old alias existed, so renaming an alias to the name of an existing collection was accepted. Alias lookup runs before collection lookup, so requests for that collection then went to the alias target. This is the same name check CreateAlias already does; it now rejects the rename with "already exists". I confirmed this with a state-machine unit test, not against a live server. The commit is AI-generated and marked [AI].

All Submissions:

  • My PR targets the dev branch (not master) and my branch was created from dev.
  • Have you followed the guidelines in our Contributing document?
  • Have you checked to ensure there aren't other open Pull Requests for the same update/change?

New Feature Submissions:

  1. Does your submission pass tests?
  2. Have you formatted your code locally using cargo +nightly fmt --all command prior to submission?
  3. Have you checked your code using cargo clippy --workspace --all-features command?

Changes to Core Features:

  • Have you added an explanation of what your changes do and why you'd like us to include them?
  • Have you written new tests for your core changes, as applicable?
  • Have you successfully ran tests with your changes locally?

Not ticked: tests ran on the same commit based on master (6 passed, new test fails without the fix), not on dev (no protoc here); open-PR search, fmt and clippy not run.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

apply_alias_actions now rejects an alias rename when the destination name matches an existing collection. The added test checks that the operation returns StorageError::AlreadyExists and leaves the cluster state unchanged.

Change: Bug fix · Severity of issue fixed: Medium

Suggested reviewers: ffuugoo

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 15558

Alias renames colliding with collection names are rejected without committing partial alias changes. No material merge risk remains.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to d0a5b

The change prevents alias renames from shadowing existing collections. It preserves existing management permissions and rejects invalid batches before publishing alias changes. No material security risk introduced or worsened by this PR was identified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The affected asset scope is the collection-and-alias namespace managed by the deployment. Existing authorization permits alias management through global management access, rather than ordinary collection-scoped access; the PR does not broaden that authority.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — User-supplied alias operations enter through existing REST and gRPC handlers and pass through centralized metadata-operation authorization before dispatch. The new destination check adds validation inside the existing storage boundary without bypassing that control.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The direct alias-update path holds collection and alias write locks through validation and commit, preventing an intervening collection-map mutation. Alias persistence saves the candidate mapping before replacing its in-memory state. These containment mechanisms are unchanged by the guard.

Description check ✅ Passed The description explains the collision bug, the fix, and the state-machine test. It is directly related to the changeset.
Linked Issues check ✅ Passed Issue #10944 requires rejecting RenameAlias when the destination matches a collection name. The PR summary reports a destination collection check in apply_alias_actions. The state-machine test asserts…
Out of Scope Changes check ✅ Passed The reported source change adds the collection-name collision check. The added state-machine test verifies the required rejection and unchanged state. Both changes directly support issue #10944.

Prefer explicit conversions in this test.

The Rust review guidance prefers String::from(...) over .into().

The rejection is already covered by the CreateAlias check and the production guard; keep the fix without the extra state-machine test.
