[8.3-fpm-nginx] s6-rc-compile fatal: missing /etc/s6-overlay/s6-rc.d/user/type after 2026-07-15 rebuild #424

Description

@jozefrebjak

Summary

The daily rebuild of shinsenter/php:8.3-fpm-nginx published on 2026-07-15 (~03:29 UTC) crashes at container startup during s6-overlay init:

s6-rc-compile: fatal: unable to read /etc/s6-overlay/s6-rc.d/user/type: No such file or directory

The top-level user bundle under /etc/s6-overlay/s6-rc.d/ seems to be missing its type file, so s6-rc-compile aborts and the container never starts. The previous digest of the same moving tag started fine.

Affected image

shinsenter/php:8.3-fpm-nginx (linux/amd64)

digest
broken (2026-07-15 rebuild) sha256:ee34b4045dea30558c5bf4e53067de1d3c55e7f6b771236b1119124e4aaf01ec

The 8.3-fpm-nginx-alpine tag was rebuilt in the same batch (now sha256:5345ed598551fb8f2e922d8bb722b844c5b86996e5af5e157e53928182187b65, previously sha256:24a317ffe92c0fe2a78af951f508cd7a141a9ad4a6a053c1b4d42678c3c1a03b); I have only confirmed the crash on the Debian fpm-nginx variant.

To reproduce

$ docker run --rm shinsenter/php:8.3-fpm-nginx@sha256:ee34b4045dea30558c5bf4e53067de1d3c55e7f6b771236b1119124e4aaf01ec
...
s6-rc-compile: fatal: unable to read /etc/s6-overlay/s6-rc.d/user/type: No such file or directory

The crash happens during s6-overlay init before any application code runs; downstream customization is not involved.

Workaround

Pinning the base image to the previous digest (sha256:0e77abe6...) restores a working container.

Environment

  • Docker, linux/amd64
  • Image tag: 8.3-fpm-nginx
  • s6-overlay v3 (as shipped in the image)
