Welcome to week 4 of our month-long celebration for Indy Hall’s 20th Anniversary.

These last few weeks have been the perfect way to live our “Take Care” ethos and build momentum towards the big party on Saturday.

Now, there are just 3 days left to our big IH20 bash this Saturday. 😳

Over the last year, we’ve spent so much time thinking about this month, and in particular this day.

And to be totally honest, I’m equal parts excited and anxious.

Excited for the connections and reconnections between people from across so many generations of Indy Hall.

Anxious that we’ve overlooked something important, or that someone who would have loved to be a part of it couldn’t join us.

I’d be lying if I said they haven’t both kept me up at night 😅

But I keep reminding myself that the point of this thing we do isn’t perfection. It’s taking action, chasing dreams, and celebrating any amount of time we get to spend together while doing it.

This is a milestone, and it’s a big one.

And we’ll still be 20 years old next week, and we’ll still keep doing things worth celebrating.

What to expect at the Big IH20 Anniversary Party

We’ve had some questions about the schedule and what to expect for this Saturday, so here’s a quick rundown to get you excited:

3–5pm Pre-party

Want to celebrate with us but prefer to avoid big crowds, have to consider a babysitter on the clock, or an early morning on Sunday?

Come to our pre-party for a more intimate & easygoing hang!

Join us early for…

Light bites and afternoon snacks

Rooftop Open Bar with Signature Craft Cocktails powered by Mixy Mobile

Perfect Wines provided by our friends Mazza

N/A options available too!

IH20 Merch available for sale in person

Friendship bracelets made by the Indy Hall Girl Scout troop

The best vibes with friends, old and new

Even if you need to be home for dinner, we still wanna celebrate with you. 🥳

5–8pm Full Party Mode

From 5pm onward, let’s dim the lights and turn it up for the rest of the evening!

In addition to everything from the pre-party list above, you can look forward to…

Tacos from Hi-Lo Taco Co. & Build Your Own Mediterranean Bowls from Real Food Eatery

Groovy live entertainment to help set the mood, featuring Jimmy Butterfield, DJ Yongwoo, and Eddie Gamble

A champagne toast with a few words of thanks from Adam and yours truly, reflecting on the many things we have to celebrate

We have a few other small surprises up our sleeve…but hopefully that’s enough to help you plan your time with us!

If you haven’t RSVP’d for Saturday, now’s your last chance before we’re officially sold out!

And if you have any questions, send me a note.

IH20 Week 4: Take Care of the Future

In many ways Indy Hall has always lived in the future, and not just because of technology.

We were the first coworking space in Philadelphia, and one of the first in the world.

We’ve consistently been ahead of trends in work, including self-employment and remote work.

I like to say that we were “Zoom hipsters”, using the tool to connect remote members of our community as early as 2017 (yes, you read that right)

But living in the future isn’t the same as taking care of it.

These days, taking care of the future can feel more dire than ever. And while we don’t purport to have all of the answers, I do think that Indy Hall’s 20 years have taught us that we can take on anything if we do it together.

For me, it’s less about making predictions about the future and more about how we can learn from the past and do in the present to create a better future for everyone.

I have no idea what comes next, but if more people can share and use that lens to solve more problems, I know that we’ll keep making a difference for many years to come.

We’re in week three of Indy Hall’s 20th Anniversary month.

HUGE thanks to everyone who joined us last Friday.

We were inspired by Katel’s lightning talk about the small ways we can approach mutual aid support every day, enjoyed a lively PWYW coworking day with a mix of regulars and new friends. And we wrapped up the week with a happy hour at the sticker-covered TMoms on South Street. Whew!

Yesterday Adam and I were reflecting on how this month has felt so far, and he said “September feels like a waterslide.”

He’s so right. This month has been fast, thrilling, a little scary, very fun, and we don’t know exactly how it’s going to end — but it’s gonna be with a splash!

And we’re not done yet.

If you haven’t RSVPd for our big party on September 26th, don’t wait!

👉 Head here to RSVP and consider chipping in to buy a round for the room with a micro-sponsorship of as little as $25.

If you can’t make it but want to support, you can still chip in and get a big thank you at the party. 💛

The party runs 3–9pm+. The first leg (3–5pm) is a low-key warm-up for folks with families and other evening commitments. At 5pm we kick into high gear, with special programming around 7pm. Craft cocktails, wine and beer from our official open bar powered by MixyMobile, and a champagne toast courtesy of our friends at Mazza Wines.

A quick update on IH20 merch

Last week we shipped all T-shirt and Tote bag pre-orders. We’ve LOVED seeing our merch in the wild — keep those photos coming!

By popular demand we’ve added Sticker and Poster options. Both are available in person at the Indy Hall Clubhouse this week, and will be available for order online next week and in person at the party.

Check out what’s available online →

Every dollar from merch goes directly into paying local artists and small businesses for the party.

What’s on deck for this Friday, September 18

If you can’t make the party — or really love to pre-game — there are two more Fridays of special IH20 activities, and we’d love to see you.

💛 PWYW Coworking — 9:00 AM–5:00 PM

🎙️ Speak Easy Series w/ Julie Hancher — 10:00 AM

A 10-minute talk to spark a conversation on the week’s theme, followed by open discussion. Coffee and light bites included.

This week, Julie Hancher leads on the theme “Take Care of This Place.” Julie is the Co-Founder & Editor of Green Philly, a Philadelphia-based environmental journalism nonprofit covering sustainability, green living, and conscious community in Philly.

Over the weekend I watched this beautiful ~10 minute story of Anna Garcia reflecting on her relationship with classic arcades & pinball halls, originally shared in our #community-nerds Discord Channel by Hannah L.

The video focuses on navigating the loss of these vibrant spaces, especially when they are paved over by their polar opposite: cold, lifeless spaces and what Garcia beautifully describes as “marketed isolation.”

As she described her own memories of growing up in colorful & chaotic arcades, it made me think about how often people tell that Indy Hall feels different in some way that they can only describe as “more human.”

Sometimes people point to the art and artifacts around the space, and of course the sense of community.

I think the simple truth is this place feels good because good people spend time here, doing good things together.

We could point to the countless small but intentional choices that we make that add up to that feeling.

But there is one intentional choice that has made the biggest difference, and it’s a counterintuitive one:

We operate our space as a work in progress. That means choosing to leave certain things unfinished and sometimes even draw attention to the rough edges or gaps, so that any person who inhabits that space might help make it better.

To Anna’s point, it’s rare to find spaces in this world that invite people to play a role in “completing” them.

We live in an era where most spaces – especially commercial ones but public spaces too! – are built for us.

There’s a time and a place for that, of course, but I think we need more imperfect spaces that we can co-create together, over long periods of time.

Imperfection feels more human

Rather than hold up Indy Hall as the example, I actually want to hold up a different Philadelphia cornerstone that most people won’t expect:

The legendary Tattooed Mom on South Street.

Founded nearly a decade before Indy Hall, TMoms has its own steward of community in Robert Perry.

On the surface, Indy Hall and TMoms don’t seem to have much in common besides the fact that most people call us by our colloquial nicknames rather than our formal “government names” of Independents Hall and Tattooed Mom respectively.

If you look a bit closer, you’ll see that both of our calendars are packed with an eclectic mix of community-powered events. If you visit in person, you’ll find that walls are adorned with art in a way that feels nothing like a museum and more like a collection of memories.

That last part - the collection of memories - is the important part.

Rather than creating spaces for the people who inhabit them, Moms and Indy Hall have prioritized leaving things imperfect so that the people can add to them. The result is that the space feels more like home for the person leaving their mark, and for everyone who comes after them.

We think of those imperfections as invitations

Over the years, Robert has told me stories of many young artists, skaters, punks, and community organizers who spent their twenties at Tmoms, hanging out with likeminded people from different walks of life.

Sharing and debating ideas. Honing craft. Having fun. Encouraging each other. Creating together.

And then the magic happens: some of those creations (or their artifacts) end up being left behind on the walls.

Inevitably, those young people grow up. Some move away.

Where they land varies, including some who go on to have successful careers related to their art or activism.

But they always know they can come home to Mom’s.

The physical art and artifacts matter a lot less than the humans who left them behind

Like Indy Hall, when you walk into TMoms, you can feel the energy of those communal experiences shared by countless people, over the 30 year history of the bar.

It’s not just the art and stickers and other physical artifacts, though that’s the most visible.

It’s the long arc of people, and time, taking one tiny unfinished corner and adding themselves to it.

And at Mom’s, it’s even more visceral to see the literal layers of stickers and art built up on top of each other over years.

That accretion of individuals and groups of people adding new layers on top of layers.

Anyone can copy the aesthetic, and plenty have tried. And even when those spaces look cool, they lack the feeling of Tmoms or Indy Hall.

Because you can’t fake the fingerprints of real people and the character they leave behind.

If you’ve been a part of Indy Hall, even if it’s just visiting us for a day, you’ve been a part of the virtuous cycle that makes these spaces feel special.

For those fingerprints, we thank you. 💛

In September of 2006, I walked into a big old house located in Chestnut Hill.

I remember the room was filled with a nervous positivity. Creative Camp as it was dubbed was our first local incarnation of an “unconference”, inviting the event’s attendees to fill the schedule with the ideas and projects that they wanted to share.

At Creative Camp, I chose to share the earliest sparks of what would eventually become Indy Hall in front of a dozen or so people.

Those people included Kevin Lee, David Dylan Thomas, and Lauren Galanter who are still members to this day.

After sharing, Lauren spoke up to share her enthusiastic support with an idea of her own:

“You could even call it something like ‘Independents Hall’ - like a hall of independent people, working together”

That’s when Indy Hall got its name. Before there was a space, a business, or even a community to speak of, there was a person who wasn’t me offering something to make the idea better.

I left that Creative Camp unsure what would happen next, but galvanized to keep having those conversations.

Johnny Bilotta was the first person to tell me: “Philly needs this. We need this. I need this.”

I kept meeting people, one by one. Every week, sometimes every day, another person told me something similar.

Soon, I started connecting those people with each other. Often over a meal or drinks. Sometimes in each other’s living rooms or back patios.

Before we organized anything resembling an “event”, we’d find other peoples’ events and go to them together.

Whenever somebody asked “why doesn’t this exist?” my next words would be “because you haven’t done it yet - how can we help make it happen?”

That’s how we started organizing some of our own events. BlogPhiladelphia was one of the first, teaming up with friends like Annie Heckenberger who I’d only ever met on Twitter to rent out a ballroom at the Warwick Hotel for a day of learning and sharing. More similar events followed.

For many of us who had chosen alternative paths in our work, this sense of togetherness made it feel like anything was possible.

Sometimes folks are surprised to learn that our first brushes with coworking weren’t even in a coworking space.

A few of our early community members - Jason Tremblay and Dave Speers - suggested that we try going to the same cafe on the same day.

On purpose! How novel.

I’m always the first to admit that those days at Chapter House on 9th and Bainbridge weren’t the most productive. The wifi wasn’t good, and the barista probably would rather us not be there.

But those days proved something that many of us now know to be true: working alone sucks, especially when it’s your only option, and spending a few hours working alongside people you like is the battery recharge we’d all been looking for.

Eventually, the club started asking for a clubhouse.

What if we could do this anytime we wanted? What if it was easier for us to find each other?

I shared the lessons I’d learned following other early coworking spaces, notably a pioneering spot called Citizen Space that I’d learned a lot from.

I teamed up with a partner, Geoff DiMasi, who lent a 23 year old Alex Hillman two things: his wisdom and his credibility.

By the late spring of 2007 we were actively looking for potential places to call home. We scouted spaces from Craigslist.

We found a tiny, split level loft on Strawberry Street, an alley in Old City.

The older couple who owned the building had designed and built it themselves, with a dream of their own.

Even though they didn’t understand us, or our business model, they saw the dream that our community shared. They gave us a 6 month lease to try it out.

30 days later, we were on the front page of the business section of the Inquirer. I was quoted talking about not wearing pants, and talking to a cat that I didn’t have. “Wow, seems like this is going to work out for you guys” one of the owners said.

Neither of us knew how right she was.

Before we had our own space, we had people who wanted to be around each other.

Indy Hall is special for many reasons, but the thing I think has set us apart is that the people always came first.

People who are genuinely curious about each other, and what we could do together that we couldn’t on our own.

People who were generous with their time, and willing to share what they knew and what they had.

Yes, having an address made it easier for us to find each other.

But it’s the people — and the way you contribute to each other — that has made this 20 year journey possible.

“It’s not what we’ve done, it’s how we do.”

There are lots of ways we could celebrate, but the idea that really landed for me was when Adam said the line above.

This month, we’re not celebrating that we’ve managed to survive for 20 years.

We’re celebrating the way that we’ve shown up for each other for 20 years.

Since that first Creative Camp, Indy Hall has existed because someone showed up, said hello, and shared something of themselves that would benefit the others in the room.

That simple idea lets me trust that even when I’m not 100% sure how it’s gonna go, if the people show up for each other, we’ll all be better off for it.

And that’s all I ever wanted.

To help and encourage each other be a little bit better, every day.

Thanks for 20 years of those days. 💛 May we co-create many, many more.

Our Big 20th Anniversary Party is just over a month away, on Saturday, September 26th.

But the celebration begins Friday, September 4th, with special gatherings taking place every Friday of the month.

That’s right — every Friday in September, we have three ways to celebrate with us:

A special Pay What You Wish Coworking Day — free for members (just RSVP), sliding scale for friends and guests. All proceeds go directly into funding the party at the end of the month.

A FREE morning talk from our Speak Easy Speaker Series — each with hopeful and thought-provoking discussions riffing on a different aspect of our “Take Care” ethos.

A Destination Happy Hour at different bars of historical significance to the Indy Hall community. Free to attend, pay-as-you-go food and drink.

And of course, The Big Anniversary Party itself. Everything builds up to the last Saturday of the month when we gather at the Clubhouse for the biggest celebration in our history.

All of these gatherings are open to anyone, but space will be limited — please help us plan by RSVPing to any events you plan to attend.

🎟️ Browse the schedule and save your spots →

Each Friday event and the Big Anniversary Party have their own RSVP page, so make sure you sign up for each one individually.

Early registration guarantees your spot…we’re expecting these to fill up!

Feeling generous? Buy a Round when you RSVP!

To keep this party free and open, we’re bringing back a party tradition from our early days: chipping in as a micro-sponsor to “buy a round” for your fellow attendees.

When you RSVP, you’ll see Buy A Round options starting at just $25 for individuals, or $50–$500 for businesses.

If you have the means, these contributions add up quickly and help us keep the food, drinks, and entertainment flowing. We’ll give you a shout-out in the room and immortalize you on the 20th Anniversary website 😎

And if you know you can’t make it, buying a round is also a great way to contribute from afar.

More to come 👀

We haven’t shared ALL of the details yet…so stay tuned for more surprises and updates.

If you’ve ever wanted to explain what Indy Hall is, you’ve probably discovered it’s surprisingly hard. You can describe the space. You can list the events. You can tell stories about the people you’ve met here.

But underneath all of that is something much simpler: the way we treat each other.

So with our 20th Anniversary approaching, once we decided to center it on our ethos statement “Take care of yourself, Take Care of Each Other, Take Care of This Place”, the idea of putting that statement on physical items became obvious!

And thanks to our talented friends @the666cat and Jason Santa Maria, we have a set of brand new designs to show you — and they’re available for pre-order now.

But only 100 preorders of each design are available!

Kindness is Punk Rock

The iconic @the666cat brought unmistakable Philadelphia energy, combining a punk rock vibe with yellow roses, symbolizing friendship & joy.

Check it out below, available in color on a super-comfy ivory shirt, and a monochrome variant on a graphite tee.

Make Caring your every day carry

The other thing people have been suggesting for a while is an Indy Hall tote bag. Everybody loves a good tote!

Longtime friend and member Jason Santa Maria pitched in to help us interpret the classic bodega bag design to our theme as well, giving us a tote design that we’re super proud of.

Supports Artists & Local Businesses…and our party!

Each of these items invites you to help us spread the ideas that we try to live by, which to us is much more meaningful than sporting a logo.

Plus, proceeds from every preorder goes directly to the local makers, Indy Hall members, friends, and small businesses helping make our September 26 celebration happen.

Don’t think of this as a fundraiser…think of it as a reinvestment in the people who make this place worth celebrating.

Items are available individually, or as a shirt + tote bundle with 10% off.

Note: Pickup orders available now. Shipping options (domestic and int’l) available later this week.

Preorder yours at indyhall.org/merch →

Again, only 100 preorders available of each design, so if one speaks to you, don’t wait!

Thanks for helping us celebrate not just what we’ve built together — but the way we’ve built it.

When I came back from vacation last week, Adam shared the visual concepts that he’d been working on for the 20th Anniversary.

One of the emergent themes that stuck is “collages” - in part inspired by our friends at Collage Philadelphia including their chief ambassador in our community, Craig H.

Like a collage, every great experience at Indy Hall is a sort of composite of contributions from a range of people. Even if it seems a little chaotic or random, it takes careful thought and intention to stitch them together into something that couldn’t have existed without bringing those disparate pieces together.

I love this visual metaphor! It feels very resonant for how we think about our own community and the communities we collaborate with.

It also helped me realize what was missing from the new 20th anniversary website. Photos!

Share your photos, so we can stitch them together

We’ve started sifting through a pool of our own photos from across old Flickr albums, Dropbox folders, iPhoto libraries, and the archived corners of the Indy Hall website.

But beyond a few notable exceptions, it’s mostly my photos. A singular perspective. Definitely not the diversity of style and perspective that makes a collage feel rich and meaningful.

So we have two requests from you, our community of members and alumni, supporters & friends!

1 - If you have photos from Indy Hall or Indy Hall adjacent memories, please share them!

If possible, share a sentence or two about the memories attached to the photo or collection.

2 - If there’s something that makes you think of Indy Hall, snap a new photo of yourself with that object or in that place.

Maybe it’s your classic Indy Hall hoodie or our limited edition lego minifigs. Maybe it’s a place that you want to go with a person who’s special to you.

Whatever it is, we can’t wait to see and hear those memories.

For now we’re keeping submissions simple.

Send me a note and attach your photos/memories. If it’s more than a few photos, use your fav file sharing tool like Google Drive or Dropbox.

And let us know if you’d like the photos credited to you, or if you prefer to contribute anonymously!

Our hope is to sprinkle the website with memories as we get closer to the celebrations in September, and beyond.

Years ago, I heard my friend Chris Lehmann from Science Leadership Academy share a sort of mantra they encourage their students to live by:

Take care of yourself, Take care of each other, Take care of this place we share

It felt so aligned to Indy Hall that, with permission, we adopted it as our own.

At one point, we even had it hand-lettered by member Mike Jackson, and had it on member key cards and a rug near our entrance!

This ethos is always in the background, guiding our ideas, our decisions, and our priorities.

Even when the words aren’t visible, we’re doing our best to live by them.

So we thought, what if we made 20th anniversary a way to make this ethos visible?

And over the last few weeks, the Indy Hall team and a collection of very helpful members have put together a month long series of celebrations that span our history, our city, and our community.

Plus a 4th theme to extend the ethos beyond the celebration. 👀

And we couldn’t be more excited!

📆 Five September Dates to Save

The BIG event to put on your calendar is Saturday, Sept 26th, right here at the Clubhouse.

If you’ve ever been a part of the Indy Hall community, as a member or a friend or champion or cheerleader, it would mean the WORLD to have you in the room.

We know that members (and the community!) have a truly global footprint, so if travel to Philadelphia is in the cards we’d love to see you.

For every Friday in September leading up to the big shindig, we’ve put together a series of smaller gatherings to give us a way to revisit chapters of our history through the Indy Hall ethos itself.

I’ll be sharing more details over the coming weeks, but for now, save these dates:

Friday September 4 — Take Care of Yourself

Friday September 11 — Take Care of Each Other

Friday September 18 — Take Care of This Place

Friday September 25 — Take Care of the Future

Then it all comes together on September 26th for the party!

Come for one, come for all.

Can’t make it but want to show some love and be a part of the celebration?

We’ve got you covered too — more on that soon!

I’ve been a Podia customer for nearly a decade, so I was beyond stoked when they asked about hosting a coworking meetup in Philadelphia and doing it with us!

If you’re unfamiliar, Podia is a platform for digital creators and course builders that’s noticed the same thing many of us have: the internet has gotten less human, despite the ability and promise to connect us across physical locations.

As they’ve shifted their online product and course product to embrace human connections rather than trying to replace them with AI, they decided to start hosting in-person coworking events for anyone who creates products online and wants to connect with other creators and digital business owners.

The format is very similar to our PWYW coworking days, just specifically designed for Philly-based Podia creators and entrepreneurs to meet each other and work alongside Indy Hall members.

The afternoon may include a casual show & tell — 5-minute lightning rounds for anyone who wants to share what they’re building.

And yes, it wraps up with our Friday Happy Hour tradition!

If you’re building something with Podia — or just curious about the stuff other people are making — grab an RSVP.

Over the last 6 months, we’ve been applying the same idea of “laying the groundwork for collaboration” at the community level, in addition to individual people.

Between our own events, member-run activities, and our community partners, we have dozens of groups that have more overlap than they realize.

So I’ve been making it my mission to find ways to bring groups together, especially when they have things in common but might not know it yet.

You can’t force these kinds of experiences, but we can create the conditions and extend the invitations.

And it’s been SO fun to see the plan working.

From Good Neighbors to the Global Stage

Our 5pm happy hour toasts rolled straight into a very special celebration with local roots and an Indy Hall connection!

Aziz and Vic are part of the team behind Plothole – the one that won our Good Neighbors Hackathon back in March.

Since then, they went on to participate in Code.tv’s newest show “The Full Stack” with the goal of turning their project into a real civic benefit business!

We hosted a live watch party at Indy Hall for the first episode as they competed for the best business in the challenge.

Members came for happy hour, met Vic and Aziz and the rest of the team, and made new friends while watching the first episode and playing mini games inspired by the show.

You don’t have to be a developer to appreciate what they pulled off — it was a night to connect, have fun, find your people, and cheer on two Philly builders on a global stage.
