Children's Privacy & Youth AI Safety · Available 2027

Jake Chanenson

I study how to protect young people's privacy and safety in the technology they are required to use and the technology they choose for themselves.

I'm a CS PhD researcher at the University of Chicago, working with Marshini Chetty at the Amyoli Internet Research Lab, and a Siebel Scholar. My research began with children's privacy in schools, where institutions make technology decisions on students' behalf, and now examines youth AI safety as young people use AI for schoolwork and personal support. Many of the same privacy questions apply, and they are harder to answer when no adult chose the tool. I combine human-computer interaction, computational methods, and legal analysis, and I hold a Master of Legal Studies from UChicago Law. I expect to finish my PhD in spring 2027. My work spans research, law, and policy, and I am drawn to roles across academia, industry, and government where that breadth is useful.
