Every baby naming product helps parents find names. Namesake is the only product that helps them choose one.

Every family's situation and naming story is unique — shaped by your values, heritage, the people who matter, and the names you have already ruled out.

The old way

More names do not create agreement

A child overwhelmed by a towering stack of books

Books and large databases can fill a shortlist quickly. The difficult part is comparing two people's instincts, family histories, values, and practical concerns. Namesake gives that conversation a process, from separate preferences through a tournament and comparison.

The Namesake way

Move from family priorities to a tournament

Capture your inspirations, set family weights and rules, and review the resulting longlist before launching the tournament. Private parent brackets and comparison happen inside it, followed by family voting when included.

01

Record what the name should carry

Add the heritage, values, people, places, stories, and sounds that matter to your family. Partners can contribute together or answer independently before comparing their ideas.

02

Set your family's weights and rules

Distribute 100 points across originality, sound, meaning, and other priorities. Add firm rules to remove unsuitable names before the longlist is prepared.

03

Review names matched to your priorities

The builder uses your inspirations, weights, and rules to prepare a ranked longlist. Save the candidates that deserve closer consideration and remove those that do not fit.

04

Bring family and friends into the tournament

After the tournament is launched, share a private voting link with the people you choose. Their bracket votes and comments become part of the tournament record.

Choose a name whose story you can tell

The aim is a decision made with enough care that both parents can explain what the name means to their family years later.

Explain why this name fit

Meaning, family history, sound, practicality, and each parent's preference can all become part of the answer. Namesake keeps those reasons close to the decision.

Research and choosing in one process

Move from family priorities and name research to a longlist, private parent brackets, comparison, and a completed tournament. Each part helps turn browsing into a decision you can explain.

Answer separately before comparing

Both partners can record their inspirations and preferences independently. This preserves each person's first response before the ideas are brought together.

Scoring based on your priorities

Set weights for originality, sound, meaning, and other family priorities, then add rules that remove poor fits. The resulting longlist reflects what you said matters.

Private family voting

Family and friends vote through a private link and can leave comments. Their votes inform the tournament rounds, and the completed tournament names a winner.

Popularity shown over time

Profiles use Social Security birth records covering 1880–2024 to show how recorded use has changed. The history gives a current rank the context that a single number cannot provide.

Reveal the name and sex together

If you are waiting to learn the baby's sex, surprise mode keeps the result private and reveals the winning name and sex together when you choose.

Run the tournament at a baby shower

Guests vote from their phones while the bracket appears on a shared display. The tournament advances through the live votes and resolves a winner in real time.

Our story

Why I built Namesake

My wife and I are expecting our first child. Baby-name books gave us thousands of candidates without a sound way to compare our preferences. I wanted a process that respected both parents and produced a choice we could explain to our child later.

Namesake gives your people a real seat at the table — without losing your voice in the choice.

"A good name is more desirable than great riches."

— Proverbs 22:1

"We are ghosts or we are ancestors in our children's lives. We either lay our mistakes upon them and haunt them, or we assist them in laying those old burdens down and free them. As ancestors, we walk alongside them and assist them in finding their own way and some transcendence."

— Bruce Springsteen

"To name a thing is to give it power."

— Ursula K. Le Guin

"I think of myself as a philosopher only in the sense of being able to set an example."

— Friedrich Nietzsche

"Don't worry that children never listen to you; worry that they are always watching you."

— Robert Fulghum

"A careful man I want to be — a little fellow follows me. I do not dare to go astray, for fear he'll go the self-same way. I cannot once escape his eyes. Whatever he sees me do he tries. Like me he says he's going to be — that little chap who follows me."

— Author unknown

"Example is not the main thing in influencing others. It is the only thing."

— Albert Schweitzer

"The name we give to something shapes how we think of it."

— Keith Chen
