Priority: ⬇️ Low Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~10 minutes Change: Bug fix Suggested reviewers: Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to Valid, uncommon Snappy streams with one- or two-byte copies still cannot be converted directly. The documented decode-and-encode alternative is available, but the compatibility limitation should be explicitly accepted before merging. Security Architecture ReviewSecurity architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to The change replaces a potential panic on short copies with a returned error and does not appear to broaden access to the converter. A format-valid short copy is still rejected, so callers that require full Snappy compatibility need to account for that limitation. Retained concerns Security review detailsSecurity Blast Radius

Honestly, the converted should just be marked deprecated. 99.9% pointless. |
|
Makes sense on deprecating it. This is just a small guard so a crafted stream returns ErrSnappyCorrupt instead of panicking the block encoder, so it seems worth keeping either way, but happy to add a Deprecated note in the same PR if you'd rather flag the converter here. Also pushed a commit dropping a stray debug println I'd left in the guard. |
Out-of-range match length in the Snappy converter
A Snappy Copy2/Copy4 op can carry a length of 1 or 2, and decodeSnappy turns that into a sequence with matchLen = uint32(length) - zstdMinMatch, which underflows. mlCode then returns match symbol 67, past maxMatchLengthSymbol, so encoding the block slices the 53-entry mlBitsTable at [:68] and Convert panics on the crafted stream.
A real Snappy encoder never emits a copy shorter than 4, so rejecting length < zstdMinMatch as corrupt matches the other validation in decodeSnappy and leaves valid streams unchanged. Added a test that builds such a stream and expects ErrSnappyCorrupt instead of a panic.
