Questions
What do people ask about Grain?
Do I need a Grain subscription for the agent?
No. Bring Claude Code, Codex or Cursor on your own plan. Your local agent does the work, so there are no API credits to buy.
Who can open what I publish?
Share a public link or protect it with a password. The person opening it does not need your coding agent. Grain organization membership is separate.
How is Grain different from ChatGPT Space?
ChatGPT Space is OpenAI’s shared workspace of pages that people and ChatGPT edit together, on Pro, Business and Enterprise plans. Grain gives a shared home to any agent, keeps every artifact as files you can check out and export, and runs apps with their own database. See the full comparison.
Is Grain open source?
Yes. The source is on GitHub under AGPL-3.0, with two attribution terms.
Which agents work?
Claude Code, Codex and Cursor out of the box, and anything else that speaks MCP.
Who builds Grain?
Tyler Brown and Parsa Khazaeepoul at Dcouple, who also built the open source agent workbench Pane. Dcouple runs its own work on Grain. About Grain.
Windows and Linux?
Yes. The desktop app runs on macOS, Windows and Linux. Install it with curl -fsSL https://rungrain.com/install.sh | sh on macOS or Linux, or irm https://rungrain.com/install.ps1 | iex in Windows PowerShell. From any computer, you can also connect Claude, ChatGPT or any MCP client to the hosted MCP server and work with the same grains.
Two of us build Grain, and we run Dcouple on it, as does the BloomText team. We made Pane first—an open-source agent workbench—and kept hearing the same question: where does the work go when the laptop closes, or when you switch agents?
