Project summary

The Real-Time Alert System for Air Quality Control Using Web Technologies and Artificial Intelligence Techniques (SATRAI) project aims to develop an innovative technological platform to monitor air quality in real time, issue early warnings about critical pollution levels, and provide open access to the collected and processed data. By integrating advanced artificial intelligence techniques, the system will deliver precise predictions to enhance the responsiveness of citizens, public managers, and other stakeholders to
environmental pollution challenges.

The platform, built on web technologies, will feature interactive tools for dynamic visualization of historical, current, and projected data, as well as functionalities for downloading and reusing the data in open formats. This approach fosters transparency, collaboration, and the generation of knowledge through shared information. Furthermore, a functional prototype with a Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of 4-5 will be developed and tested in a pilot scenario in Torrevieja to validate its functionality, accuracy, and usability.

Aligned with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 3 (Good Health and Well-Being), 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and 13 (Climate Action), this project addresses critical issues in public health, urban sustainability, and climate resilience, contributing to the development of accessible, reusable technological solutions with potential social and environmental impact.

Project objectives

General objetive

General Objective (GO) of the present proposal is: “GO 1. To develop a real-time alert system for air quality control that integrates interactive web technologies, artificial intelligence techniques, and an open data approach, with the aim of providing accessible, accurate, and reusable information to citizens, public managers, and other relevant stakeholders.”

Specific objetives

The specific objectives (SO) linked to the previously stated general objective are as follows:

  • SO 1. Real-time monitoring: Design and implement a system capable of continuously collecting and processing air quality data from different sources, ensuring real-time updates.
  • SO 2. Collection and publication of local data: Collect air pollution data, process it, and publish it in open format, following international standards of interoperability and accessibility.
  • SO 3. Early warning alerts: Develop an alert module that, through predictive models based on artificial intelligence, identifies critical pollution levels and notifies users in a timely manner.
  • SO 4. Advanced prediction: Train and validate artificial intelligence algorithms to generate accurate predictions regarding the evolution of air quality across different temporal and geographical scenarios.
  • SO 5. Interactive visualization: Create a web interface that allows users to intuitively and flexibly visualize historical, current, and projected data.
  • SO 6. Open data and reuse: Publish the collected and processed data in open formats, fostering its reuse by researchers, developers, and other stakeholders interested in technological and environmental solutions.
