What wikiboard is, what it costs, and where your boards live.
- What is wikiboard?
- Wikiboard is a free web app for reading Wikipedia on an infinite board. Each article opens as a card you can scroll, resize and drag, and clicking a link inside an article opens the linked article as a second card with a line drawn between the two, so a reading session leaves a visible map instead of a row of tabs.
- Is wikiboard free, and do I need an account?
- Wikiboard is completely free and there is no account to create. There is no trial, no paid tier and no sign-up step — opening the site is the whole onboarding.
- Do I have to install anything?
- No. Wikiboard runs entirely in a normal web browser, with no extension, app or download of any kind.
- Where are my boards saved?
- Boards are saved in your own browser, in its IndexedDB storage, and are never uploaded. That means they survive closing the tab and reloading, but they do not follow you to another browser or device, and clearing your browser data deletes them.
- Can I share a board with someone?
- Yes. Share creates a read-only link that carries the board's layout — which articles are on it, where they sit and how they connect — and the recipient's browser fetches the article text from Wikipedia itself. The article text is never part of the link, so a shared board is a few kilobytes.
- Which Wikipedia languages does it support?
- Wikiboard reads any Wikipedia language edition, and a single board can mix them: each card remembers the language it came from, so a German article and an English one can sit side by side and be connected.
- What happens when I click a link inside an article?
- Nothing navigates away. The linked article opens as a new card beside the one you were reading, joined to it by a line, and the article you were reading stays exactly where it was, at the same scroll position. Ctrl-clicking or middle-clicking still opens the link on Wikipedia in a new tab.
- Can I put images on a board?
- Yes. Clicking a picture inside an article adds it to the board as its own card, connected to the article it came from, and clicking that card opens the image full size with a link to its licence and author on Wikipedia.
- Is wikiboard affiliated with Wikipedia or the Wikimedia Foundation?
- No. Wikiboard is an independent reader with no affiliation to Wikipedia or the Wikimedia Foundation. Article content comes from Wikipedia's public API and stays under its CC BY-SA licence, with every card linking back to the article it came from.
- Does wikiboard work on a phone or tablet?
- Yes. The board pans and zooms with touch gestures, and the toolbar moves to the bottom of the screen on a narrow viewport. A large board is easier to work with on a bigger screen, but nothing is desktop-only.
