people think the fact that the story she told changed is some sort of gotcha sometimes our brains try to protect us, and it's only much later that we come to terms with what we've actually experienced

An interesting albeit horrible thought experiment: if Trump managed to invade Canada & initiate a "partial mobilization," etc., most Americans would oppose the war, sure, but I wonder how many would actually defect to fight against their compatriots. That would be rather extreme.
