The 1857 Ohio gubernatorial election was held on October 13, 1857. Incumbent Republican Salmon P. Chase defeated Democratic nominee Henry B. Payne with 48.67% of the vote.

It would seem that the few Gerrit Smith men in this state who don't believe in making themselves ridiculous by voting for candidates to swear to carry out the pro-slavery character of the U.S. Constitution, have nominated a ticket to be supported at the coming election. T. B. McCormick, the fugitive from Kentucky justice, heads the ticket.
