What changed

Codex's reply line no longer quotes a message sent with Enter during a turn.

Why

Closes #642

The codex chrome_block only knew the Queued follow-up heading, so text under Messages to be submitted ... was read as the reply.

Scope

Required behavior

LastMessage skips the Messages to be submitted block at every wrap width, and still quotes a real reply that happens to start with "Messages".

Why this approach

Same chrome_block mechanism as #618, anchored on "submitted" so real replies stay quoted.

How it was verified

The new test covers the 120/22/15-column wraps, the end-of-turn heading and two real replies starting with "Messages"; it fails on main and passes here. Not run against a live Codex session; only the Codex rule changes.

  • gofmt -l . prints nothing
  • go vet ./... passes
  • mkdir -p /tmp/amtest && env -u TMUX TMUX_TMPDIR=/tmp/amtest go test -race ./... passes
  • go build ./... passes
  • Ran it against real sessions
  • Holds for every supported agent CLI, platform (macOS, Linux, WSL2), and terminal including over SSH, or the description names what it leaves out
  • Every new action works by keyboard and by mouse, and every new setting lives on a Settings row

Visual evidence

Not applicable because: it changes which text is quoted as the reply, covered by unit tests.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Pending Codex messages are no longer mistaken for the latest reply, including when headings wrap or appear at the end of a turn.
    • Queued follow-up and input headings continue to be recognized, even when split across lines.
    • Genuine replies that begin with “Messages” remain available as the latest reply.

A message sent with Enter during a turn is drawn under a "Messages to be
submitted ..." heading, which chrome_block did not cover, so the row quoted
it as the reply. Match that heading, including the wrap that splits after
"to".

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The Codex chrome-block pattern now matches pending-message headings, including wrapped forms. chromeBlockRows checks following rows up to a blank row. Tests verify that LastMessage skips pending-message blocks and retains genuine replies beginning with “Messages”.

Full details: Visual Evidence

Explanation

The Visual evidence section provides no screenshot or recording and says the change is not applicable. The change has a meaningful visual state: the session-list reply line changes because LastMessage now removes the Codex pending-message block. Unit tests do not replace visual evidence for this user-visible text change.

Resolution

Add before-and-after screenshots, or a short recording, of the session list during a Codex turn with a pending message. Show the pending text included in the reply line before the change and excluded after the change. Include a narrow-width example if it is part of the supported behavior.

to be submitted” matches only when followed by “after next tool call” or “at end
of turn,” preventing genuine replies from being skipped. Preserve support for
wrapped headings by collecting all contiguous nonblank heading rows before
matching.

builtinTools is the only source of tool definitions and loads on every start, so an edited tool pattern or command reaches every install on that release and needs no migration.

Match "Messages to be submitted" only when followed by "after next tool
call" or "at end of turn" (wrapping allowed between any words), so a reply
such as "Messages to be submitted soon are batched." is still quoted. The
block scan reads up to four heading rows to follow the 15-column wrap.

Thanks @drakeo338! I ran it against a live codex 0.159.2 at 120, 22 and 15 columns and the pending message stays out of the reply line at every width.
