NOT LGTM. The one _cluster key with real reach is set to a shape nothing reads, the check meant to catch that cannot, and the commit message says both were fixed.
Blockers
1. hack/testdata/render-fixtures/configured.yaml:17-19 sets scheduling keys no chart reads.
The fixture sets nodeSelector and tolerations. Three charts read _cluster.scheduling, all shaped if .Values._cluster.scheduling then get ... "globalAppTopologySpreadConstraints": packages/apps/postgres/templates/db.yaml:194-196, packages/apps/kubernetes-nodes/templates/nodegroup.yaml:126-127, packages/apps/vm-instance/templates/_helpers.tpl:100-101. The fixture makes the outer if true over a payload that is always nil, so the branch it opens has an empty body. Rendering postgres under configured.yaml gives 7 documents and zero hits for topologySpreadConstraints. The platform's default for that map is globalAppTopologySpreadConstraints (packages/core/platform/values.yaml:546-547). The key is absent from fresh.yaml and wildcard.yaml as well, which the fixtures README rules out in its own words: "When a chart starts reading a _cluster key none of these set, add it to all three." Diff the _cluster keys app templates read against the keys the fixtures set and scheduling is the only read-but-unset one.
2. hack/check-render-matrix.bats:104-108 does not reject what it says it rejects, and needs PyYAML to not do it.
06bd2707a says the check "now walks _cluster and _namespace and rejects any non-string scalar". The comprehension iterates one level of each map, so a dict value is skipped whole. Fed a fixture carrying scheduling: {globalAppTopologySpreadConstraints: true}, the one-liner exits 0. That is exactly the shape blocker 1 is about, so the guard is blind to the defect standing next to it.
The dependency is the second half. hack/md-no-hardwrap.bats:31-34 states the convention: "Other hack/*.bats deliberately avoid a python3 dependency; a test for a python3 hook cannot", and it guards with have_python3() before every test. This file adds not just python3 but a third-party module, unguarded and declared nowhere. The unit-test job installs only the helm-unittest plugin, and make bats-unit-tests stops at the first red file, so a runner without PyYAML is a lane-wide red for an environment reason.
3. hack/check-render-matrix.bats:75-76, the skip guard cannot fail for kubernetes-nodes.
The test renders each skipped chart and requires it to still fail, so a skip that stopped being necessary turns red instead of dropping a chart from the sweep forever. It calls helm template "$name-render-check" "packages/apps/$name" -f fresh.yaml with no cluster value. That fails on .Values.cluster is required from kubernetes-nodes/templates/talos-reconcile-job.yaml:37, well before nodegroup.yaml reaches the instancetype lookup skip_reason() records as the reason. hack/check-render-matrix.sh:76-85 says the same thing: for this chart the lookup is the third blocker. Remove it upstream and the chart still fails, the test stays green, the skip lives on. It does bite the right reason for vm-instance. Rendering skipped charts through the script's own release_name() and extra_values(), then matching the failure text against the recorded reason, closes it.
4. Three claims in the permanent text are contradicted by measurement.
06bd2707a says the invented scheduling map "now carries globalAppTopologySpreadConstraints, which is what the platform emits". Its diff for configured.yaml touches only _namespace, and that key appears in no fixture. The same commit's claim about the type check is blocker 2. check-render-matrix.sh:4 and 52d44fd18 both say "helm-unittest covers roughly a fifth of the packages"; 81 of 164 packages have a runnable test target, 16 of 23 under packages/apps. 52d44fd18 also names _cluster.name as one of three values that take the render rate from 10/23 to 21/23, and nothing reads that key and no fixture sets it.
The conclusion the "fifth" number supports still holds, for a reason the comment does not give: helm-unittest only renders the templates a suite names in templates:, so even a covered chart goes unrendered outside its named ones. That is the stronger argument and it is worth having in place of the number. Squash and rebase are both disabled here, so each of these messages lands in main as written.
5. hack/testdata/render-fixtures/README.md hardwraps its prose.
Paragraphs are wrapped at roughly 80 columns. AGENTS.md:82-88 asks for one continuous line per paragraph in new prose the repo owns, and the summary list above it names hardwrapping directly. The repo's own hook agrees: fed the file, .claude/hooks/md-no-hardwrap.py exits 2 and lists seven blocks. Table and fenced block stay as they are.
Non-blocking
extra_values()is dead, every arm returns"". Deleting it removes the$(...)splice at line 141. The# shellcheck disable=SC2086above it names the wrong code anyway, shellcheck reports SC2046 there and still warns. Nothing gates shellcheck in CI, so cosmetic today.- 12 of the 21 swept charts render byte-identically under all three fixtures, so the sweep pays three times for the same output on more than half of them. 3.5s total, so not urgent, but worth knowing before a fourth fixture arrives.
- Tests 1, 4 and 5 each run the full sweep, which is most of the suite's 11s against the sweep's 3.5s.
hack/check-render-matrix.bats:118-132compares fresh against configured on one chart and never looks at wildcard, so that state could collapse into configured without anything turning red. It has not collapsed: tenant renders differently under the two.- Seven of the
_clusterkeys every fixture carries are read by no app template:bundle-name,expose-ingress,expose-services,keycloak-internal-url,oidc-insecure-skip-verify,wildcard-issue,extra-keycloak-redirect-uri-for-dashboard. Defensible as platform fidelity. Noting it only because the fixtures are faithful on seven keys nobody reads and wrong on the one key three charts do. - The "
_namespaceis a namespace, not a boolean" explanation is duplicated verbatim in four places. This branch has already shown how a number drifts. - The PR is labelled
area/uncategorizedbecausehackis missing from the labeler scope map. Eithertest(tests)in the title or ahackentry in the mapping lands it onarea/testing. - The subject of
06bd2707aand the "What an independent review changed" section describe the review round rather than the change. Nothing indocs/agents/contributing.mdforbids it, so not a blocker, but with squash off it is what main keeps and it gives a later reader nothing to work with. - Any new
hack/*.batswidens test selection to the full E2E suite throughfull_suite_patterninhack/select-e2e.sh. Pre-existing, worth knowing for a file that will get edited again.
Checked, no finding
The gap this closes is real, and it is bigger than the fifth/half number suggests. Dropping a required-failing template into packages/apps/bucket, which has a suite, leaves helm unittest green at 5 suites and 7 tests, because suites only render the templates they name. The sweep catches it under both fixtures.
The clickhouse test holds up under mutation. Baseline 25 green. Replacing randAlphaNum 24 with "" turns it red on the notEqual assert, breaking the preserve branch turns the second test red. Then delete the notEqual: "" line and re-apply the empty-password mutation: all 25 pass. So exists: stringData.password alone would have been vacuous and that one line is the whole guard, worth remembering if anyone trims it. No other suite renders backup-api-auth-secret.yaml.
hack/check-render-matrix.bats does run. BATS_UNIT_FILES (Makefile:161) feeds bats-unit-tests, unit-tests depends on it (Makefile:109), and .github/workflows/pull-requests.yaml:318 runs make unit-tests. Green under both runners, bats and hack/cozytest.sh. Sweep 3.5s, full bats file about 11s, 21 rendered and 2 skipped.
Also correct as stated: 40 lookup " calls under packages/apps/*/templates/, 23 chart directories, 30 against 45 documents for packages/apps/kubernetes. The Assisted-By: trailer matches what docs/agents/contributing.md:117-125 prescribes.

NOT LGTM, unchanged. This corrects two things I got wrong in my own text, nothing about the findings.
Blocker 1 named three charts and said all three were shaped if .Values._cluster.scheduling then get ... "globalAppTopologySpreadConstraints". The shared shape is right, the key is not. packages/apps/postgres/templates/db.yaml:195-196 and packages/apps/kubernetes-nodes/templates/nodegroup.yaml:126-127 read globalAppTopologySpreadConstraints. packages/apps/vm-instance/templates/_helpers.tpl:100-101 reads dedicatedNodesForWindowsVMs. What all three share is the if then get form, not the key they ask for. The postgres range I wrote as 194-196 starts at 195.
Scope, which I left out entirely: three readers under packages/apps/, seven across the tree. The other four are packages/extra/etcd/templates/etcd-cluster.yaml:59-60, packages/system/keycloak/templates/db.yaml:12-13, packages/system/monitoring/templates/alerta/alerta-db.yaml:11-12 and packages/system/monitoring/templates/grafana/db.yaml:12-13.
The blocker stands, because it rests on the measurement rather than on the count: postgres under configured.yaml renders 7 documents and zero topologySpreadConstraints, and the sweep skips vm-instance either way. Same for the fixture being absent from fresh.yaml and wildcard.yaml.

helm-unittest suites can select individual templates, leaving other templates unchecked even when the chart's tests pass. A password change during reconciliation leaves the backup sidecar and strategy Pod using different credentials, causing backup requests to fail with 401. Both first install and reuse of an existing Secret need coverage. Assisted-By: LLM Signed-off-by: Myasnikov Daniil <[email protected]>
An empty shared-service namespace disables templates that tenants with inherited services rely on. Rendering only that state leaves those templates unchecked. Assisted-By: LLM Signed-off-by: Myasnikov Daniil <[email protected]>
A fixture with unused scheduling keys can render successfully without exercising scheduling. A skip caused by an unrelated failure can also survive after its original lookup restriction is gone. OIDC values do not reach tenant realm-group templates unless Helm also knows the Keycloak API. Harbor's Gateway setting bypasses its Ingress certificate branches, so certificate fixtures need the ingress path. Assisted-By: LLM Signed-off-by: Myasnikov Daniil <[email protected]>
The render suite stayed green when empty fixture discovery, skip accounting or several fixture validation guards were removed. Those gaps could hide an incomplete sweep or admit fixture shapes that applications do not receive. Signed-off-by: Myasnikov Daniil <[email protected]> Assisted-by: LLM

myasnikovdaniil LGTM. Every blocker from my two earlier reviews is closed on this head, and the sweep goes red on the failures it says it catches.
Business context: helm-unittest suites render only the templates they name, so an app chart can keep a green suite while an unnamed template stops rendering (#4057). This PR renders every app chart offline under three platform states.
The five blockers, rechecked on 5dc4489:
- Scheduling fixture. The configured and wildcard fixtures now set
globalAppTopologySpreadConstraintsas a YAML string, the same shape as the platform default inpackages/core/platform/values.yaml:677. Fresh leaves it empty. The postgres test checks the constraint in both configured states and its absence in fresh. - Type check and PyYAML. The python one-liner is gone and the validator chart needs only helm. It types every top-level scalar, requires
schedulingandbrandingto be maps, and types both scheduling leaves. The nested case I fed the old check is rejected now. - kubernetes-nodes skip. The sweep passes
clusterand matches the error text against the recorded reason. I removed thefailatnodegroup.yaml:582and all three fixtures reported "chart now renders; remove its skip", exit 1. So the lookup is the only thing keeping that chart out. - Commit and comment text. The series was rewritten, and the "fifth" figure, the
_cluster.nameclaim and the review-round subject are gone. The body's claims hold against the diff and a local run: 16 tests, 21 rendered and 2 skipped. - README hardwrap. Every prose paragraph is one line now.
The set is packages/apps/*/, and the first test compares rendered plus skipped with the directory count, so a new chart can't fall outside the sweep. Main at 0cb37db has the same 23 chart directories as the PR base. I also broke real charts on the head. A nil pointer in bucket/templates/workloadmonitor.yaml, a template the bucket suite never names, failed under all three fixtures. So did a schema-violating default in postgres/values.yaml. The aggregate test went red under both bats and hack/cozytest.sh. make unit-tests picks the file up through BATS_UNIT_FILES, and the sweep takes about 4s with no network or dependency build. The clickhouse suite passes, 2 of 2.
Two non-blocking notes:
A chart that renders nothing still counts as rendered. I wrapped every vpn template in {{- if false }} and vpn stayed in the rendered count. The README says the check covers rendering only, so this matches the contract. Requiring at least one document per chart under at least one fixture would close it cheaply.
E2E Tests is red on this head. chainsaw/harbor timed out waiting for its HelmRelease while harbor could not reach its redis sentinel ("no route to host"). The diff touches no chart template, only hack/ and a clickhouse unittest file, so it can't affect that deployment. It needs a rerun, not a change.
What this PR does
I added an offline render check for application charts because helm-unittest suites can leave templates outside their
templates:lists unchecked. It runs inmake unit-testswith fixtures for fresh, configured and wildcard certificate states. The fixtures cover injected cluster and namespace values, with checks for PostgreSQL scheduling, tenant OIDC groups, shared services and Harbor certificate settings. The two charts that require instance-type lookup are skipped only while every fixture fails with the expected lookup error.
I also added ClickHouse tests for generating the backup API password and preserving an existing one. The render check uses empty lookup results and checks YAML rendering only.
Closes #4057
Validation
I ran
make unit-testsandmake test-controllers. All 16 render-matrix tests passed under bats and the shell runner with dash. Deliberately broken rendering, fixture validation and password generation or reuse made the tests fail.Downstream repositories
