fix(vpc): render Cozyplane objects when Kube-OVN is absent - #4034
lf (lfinmauritius) wants to merge 2 commits into
Conversation
The chart rendered kubeovn.io/v1 Vpc and Subnet objects unconditionally, so a VirtualPrivateCloud could not be installed on a cluster whose network backend is Cozyplane (no kubeovn.io API). Pick the backend from API discovery: Kube-OVN keeps priority whenever kubeovn.io/v1 Vpc is served, including hybrid clusters; Cozyplane is used only when Kube-OVN is absent and sdn.cozystack.io/v1alpha1 VPC is served; a cluster serving neither keeps the historical rendering, so offline helm template output is byte-identical. Detection never goes through lookup: a lookup against an API the cluster does not serve fails the whole render. On Cozyplane each subnet becomes a VPC carrying that subnet's CIDR (Cozyplane allocates from the first CIDR only), a VPCBinding authorizing the tenant namespace and the NetworkAttachmentDefinition under the historical subnet-<id> name, so vm-instance networks[] and the <release>-subnets ConfigMap contract are unchanged. Subnets of one release are connected by VPCPeering halves; peers produce one half per (local subnet, remote subnet) discovered by the cozystack.io/vpcId label. Static routes have no Cozyplane equivalent and fail explicitly instead of being dropped. The suite mocks remote VPC objects through kubernetesProvider because helm-unittest's fake lookup never errors for an unserved kind; its four Cozyplane cases are red on the previous template. subnets[*].name is an unconstrained string in the schema; unquoted, a name carrying a newline would open another YAML document. Quote it on the three Cozyplane objects that carry it as a label. The Kube-OVN block is left as is so its rendering stays byte-identical. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <[email protected]> Signed-off-by: lfneosequentia <[email protected]>
<!-- Thank you for making a contribution! Here are some tips for you:
- Use Conventional Commits for the PR title: `type(scope): description`
- Types: feat, fix, docs, style, refactor, perf, test, build, ci, chore
- Scopes are not an exhaustive list — pick the most specific scope for
the change and extend the list when a genuinely new area appears.
Examples:
- System components: dashboard, platform, operator, cilium, kube-ovn,
linstor, fluxcd, cluster-api
- Managed apps: postgres, mariadb, redis, kafka, clickhouse,
virtual-machine, kubernetes
- Development and maintenance: api, hack, tests, ci, docs, maintenance
- Breaking changes: append `!` after type/scope (`feat(api)!: ...`) or
add a `BREAKING CHANGE:` footer
- If it's a work in progress, consider creating this PR as a draft.
- Don't hesistate to ask for opinion and review in the community chats,
even if it's still a draft.
- Add the label `kind/backport` if it's a bugfix that needs to be
backported to a previous version.

## What this PR does
Adds an optional `allowSubnets` list to each entry of `subnets` in the
VirtualPrivateCloud chart, rendered into `spec.allowSubnets` of the
kube-ovn `Subnet`.
Every VPC subnet is rendered `private: true`, so kube-ovn drops any
packet whose source is outside the subnet's own CIDR. A tenant who runs
a VPN or router VM on a subnet already gets the forward path through
`routes` (a static route with the VM as `nextHopIP`), but traffic
arriving from the remote network is dropped by the private ACL. Today
the only fix is an operator patching the cluster-scoped `Subnet` by
hand: the tenant cannot do it, no application value records it, and it
is lost whenever the subnet is recreated.
```yaml
spec:
subnets:
- name: gateway
cidr: 172.16.1.0/24
allowSubnets:
- 192.168.1.0/24
routes:
- cidr: 192.168.1.0/24
nextHopIP: 172.16.1.10
```
The subnet stays private; the list only widens the ingress ACL of the
subnet that declares it, inside the tenant's own VPC. An absent or empty
list renders nothing, so existing releases produce the same manifests.
The chart had no helm-unittest suite, so this adds a `test` target and
`tests/subnet_test.yaml`, covering a subnet without the field, one with
it, the field staying scoped to its own subnet, and an empty list. Two
of the four cases fail against the template on `main`.
`allowSubnets` is a kube-ovn field. #4034 teaches this chart to render
Cozyplane objects when kube-ovn is absent, so whichever of the two lands
second has to decide how the other backend treats the list.

### Downstream repositories
<!--
Cozystack is upstream for repositories that are NOT kept in sync with it
automatically, and nothing in CI compares the two sides, so a change
here can break them silently.
Which change forces what, and which file to touch, is the trigger map in
docs/agents/contributing.md under "Downstream Repositories". Walk it
before you tick anything.
IF YOU ARE AN AI AGENT OR AN LLM, THIS IS PART OF THE TASK, NOT A FORM
TO FILL IN:
1. Walk the trigger map against the actual diff of this PR, file by
file. Do not decide from the PR title or from your memory of what you
changed.
2. For every repository you tick, open the follow-up PR there and link
it on the same line. A ticked box with no link claims work that does not
exist, which is worse than an empty box. Search that repository for an
open PR or issue covering it first, and link that instead of filing a
duplicate.
3. When the follow-up is out of scope, or needs a decision that is not
yours to make, open an issue in that repository instead, link that, and
say so in the PR body. Do not push a speculative PR into another
repository just to fill a line here.
4. Do not tick "No downstream repository is affected" to make the
checklist go away. If you are unsure, leave every box empty and say so
in the PR body, so a human decides.

feat(vpc): subnets accept an optional `allowSubnets` list of CIDRs admitted into the private subnet, so a VM on the subnet can act as a VPN or router gateway without a manual patch of the kube-ovn Subnet.

## Summary by CodeRabbit
* **New Features**
* Private subnets can now allow additional source CIDR ranges, such as
remote networks routed through a gateway. This setting is optional and
can be configured for individual subnets.
* **Tests**
* Added checks for rendering subnet CIDRs, including cases where the
setting is omitted or applied to only one subnet.

lf (@lfinmauritius) NOT LGTM: this adds a network backend that Cozystack does not ship yet.
Main has no Cozyplane. The sdn.cozystack.io/v1alpha1 group on main serves only SecurityGroup from cozystack-api, and nothing on main installs VPC, VPCBinding or VPCPeering. The only in-tree source for those kinds is #3149, which is still an open draft and serves them from its own aggregated API server. Its API can still change in review. So no cluster installed from main ever takes the new branch, and about 140 template lines plus a 315-line test suite would pin an API that is not settled.
The vpc integration with Cozyplane belongs in #3149, or in a follow-up once it lands, agreed with its author. I'd close this for now.
For the next PR: the commits carry Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <[email protected]>. The repo accepts only Assisted-by: LLM there, see docs/agents/contributing.md.
