LGTM (independent cozy-review pass).
Root cause is verified against upstream v1.15.10: the VMIM queue is fed only by VMIM events, and target-pod / node-assignment changes do not re-enqueue, so a return nil during Scheduling drops the event forever and the VM is left without network setup on the target node. Patch 1 is a clean backport of accepted upstream kube-ovn#6834; patch 2 is a symmetric cozystack-original that closes the "target pod not yet in cache" race (error -> rate-limited requeue, not a busy loop). The Makefile build: addition is necessary and correct (the image was never built before), and the go test runs at docker-build time so the regression cannot silently rot.
Caveats (non-blocking): the committed digest is still the pre-patch ref and gets stamped by the overlay build after merge; live-migration is not exercised in CI — recommend a cozystack-pr-test run.

LGTM — the backport is byte-identical to the upstream commit it names, both patches apply in the order the Dockerfile applies them, and the Go test is a real build gate rather than coverage on paper.
Business context: Kube-OVN drops VM live-migration network setup when it sees the migration in Scheduling before the target Pod or its node is known, which deadlocks the migration; this backports the upstream fix onto the pinned v1.15.10 image and adds a second guard for a related target-Pod race.
I checked this against a clean v1.15.10 clone instead of reading the diffs. All three patches in images/kubeovn/patches/ apply in a single git apply in glob order, which is what the Dockerfile runs, and --check --whitespace=error passes too. fix-vmim-scheduling-retry.diff is byte-identical to the diff GitHub returns for a229dec3d5150f55ca8344d0e296a8a02d52b726, the merge commit of kubeovn/kube-ovn#6834, hunk header included. The removal note is exact as well: v1.15.13 does not carry the fix, v1.15.14 does.
fix-vmim-target-pod-retry.diff really is not upstream. Both release-1.15 and master still have klog.Warningf(...) followed by return nil in that branch, so "keep until an equivalent guard is verified upstream" is accurate today. It holds up on its own merits: the queue gets DefaultTypedControllerRateLimiter (the nil argument to newTypedRateLimitingQueue is substituted with it), so the returned error requeues on 5ms-to-1000s exponential backoff instead of spinning, and every other error path in the same handler already returns that way. The condition also clears itself, either the Pod shows up or the phase leaves Scheduling and a different branch returns nil.
The test file is not inert. The Dockerfile copies it to pkg/controller/kubevirt_migration_test.go and runs it before make build-go, so a regression fails the image build, and -run '^TestVMIMigrationSchedulingRetry$' anchors the parent function so all six subtests execute. I ran that exact command in golang:1.26-bookworm against the patched tree and got 6/6. Dropping either patch fails only the cases it owns: without the target-Pod guard only target_pod_not_created goes red, without the backport only the three node cases do, and already_scheduled and same_node stay green in every configuration.
On the matrix change, reverting the Makefile line makes the new bats case fail and nothing else, and hack/build-matrix.sh then returns [] for a kubeovn patch path, so the empty-matrix claim holds when measured. The file runs 19 tests against 19 @test declarations with no early exit, and the new case adds no EXIT trap, so its declared trap count still matches.
Non-blocking follow-ups
- The body says the guard was "identified during review" and closes with "Ready for review.". This repo merges with
merge_commit_message: PR_BODY, so the body becomes the merge commit message verbatim and both phrases go intogit logwith it. The surrounding sentences read fine without them. - I could not find an upstream report for the target-Pod race; #6823 covers the scheduling case only and is closed by #6834. Filing it upstream is what makes the second patch deletable rather than carried indefinitely.
- Nothing has built the image on this PR. The fork workflows are still waiting on maintainer approval, so the green checks are DCO, label, size and the bot. The build gate is real, CI just has not exercised it here, and the numbers above come from my own local run.

…cheduling (#4328) # Description Backport of #4253 to `release-1.6`, together with #3460 which it depends on. On 1.6 kube-ovn chart and image still come from cozystack/kubeovn-chart, so draft Dockerfile had nothing to build it and kubeovn build failed (no `image` target). #3460 moves build in-tree on same kube-ovn 1.15.10 this branch runs, and brings nightly-mirror fix for kube-ovn split registry host that becomes needed once kube-ovn is built by CI. Bot draft also dropped second commit of #4253 (`fix-vmim-target-pod-retry.diff`), it is back now. I built image locally, all three patches apply to kube-ovn v1.15.10 and `TestVMIMigrationSchedulingRetry` passes.
A hand backport that carries more than one change names all of them in one phrase -- "Backport of #3938 and #4280", or "Backport of #4253 to `release-1.6`, together with #3460" for a dependency pulled along -- and the audit read only the first number after "Backport of". The rest were linked to nothing. A labelled original in second place then read as MISSING while its backport PR was still open, instead of pending, and once that PR merged it counted as landed only if the branch history happened to prove it. Read the whole reference list the phrase carries, and the together-with form this repository writes. A list counts in full only when it visibly ends: at the end of the line or the sentence, or where a "to release-X.Y" clause names the target line, with the line name a whole word: release-1.6-fixes, release-1.6.1 and release-1.6.fixes are not lines, so punctuation after the name ends it only when a space or the end of the text follows. One that runs on into anything else -- "Backport of #10, #20 is not included", or "#10, #20 to follow in a separate PR" -- may be saying something about its later items, so only its first reference, the one the phrase names directly, is kept. The issue a backport fixes, or a CI run it cites further on in the body, is never taken for an original. A reference qualified with another repository is now skipped instead of read as a local number. That also tightens the old first-number rule, which accepted any owner/repo prefix: "Backport of other/repo#20" linked local #20, so a merged backport of something unrelated could turn that PR's MISSING verdict into backported. Only a bare #N or one qualified with the repository the backport PR itself lives in, compared without regard to case, is an original. Over every PR on release-1.4, release-1.5 and release-1.6 this changes the links of exactly four: #4456 and #4421 each gain #4280, #4377 gains #4231 and #4328 gains #3460. No verdict moves today, since none of the added originals carries a backport label. Assisted-by: LLM Signed-off-by: Myasnikov Daniil <[email protected]>
What this PR does
Kube-OVN can drop VM migration setup when a migration enters
Schedulingbefore the target Pod is visible or the source or target node is known. The phase may remain unchanged afterward, leaving the target Pod waiting for network setup.Backport the final fix from kubeovn/kube-ovn#6834 to the pinned v1.15.10 image: return an error for the transient missing-node case so the existing rate-limited queue retries it. Keep the same-node behavior unchanged. That backport can be removed when updating to v1.15.14 or later.
Add a separate retry guard for the target-Pod creation race. It returns an error when the informer cache has no target Pod yet, instead of forgetting the migration event. This guard is not part of #6834 and must remain until an equivalent fix is verified in the selected upstream version.
Also include the existing kubeovn image target in the root build list. Without it, a kubeovn patch produces an empty PR build matrix and the image is omitted from the regular build and release paths.
Validation:
modernize -test -skipgenerated ./..., pass for the Linux/amd64 target using Go 1.26.4. On macOS, modernize is built for the host and run with the Linux target environment, sincego toolotherwise tries to execute a cross-compiled Linux binary.git apply --check --whitespace=error; the resulting source matches the tested tree. Formatting and source/build whitespace checks pass. The regression test covers controller queue behavior; the standard container E2E environment does not cover DRBD-backed live migration. The regular image build applies the backport and stamps the resulting digest before packaging.

Downstream repositories
The change adds an existing image target to the build list; package layout, make target interfaces, chart values, APIs, and published image-reference formats stay the same. CCP discovers package image targets dynamically and does not carry the root build list. The website has no documented workaround for kubeovn/kube-ovn#6823 or #6834 to remove.
