Timofei Larkin (@lllamnyp) NOT LGTM. No application kind changes its name limit once the new definitions are in place, but the pinned cozyvalues-gen v1.6.0 doesn't let this pass its own pre-commit, and three more things need fixing before it merges.
The change moves the per-kind name cap out of the API server and into the chart's own schema, so any application, including one served from outside this repo, can declare its naming budget.
For the limits I built every ApplicationDefinition in packages/system/*-rd through NewREST, on main and on this head, and probed name lengths 1 to 70. All 31 kinds accept exactly the same range on both sides, and Kubernetes accepts 1 to 32 on both.
Pre-commit is red, and the cause is the diff. The released v1.6.0 binary ignores the ## @name line without a warning and regenerates values.schema.json and cozyrds/kubernetes.yaml without x-cozystack-name. That is exactly the diff in the failed job. The generator from cozyvalues-gen#33 regenerates both files byte-for-byte as committed, so the order is: #33 merged and released, the pin at .github/workflows/pre-commit.yml:57 bumped to that release in this PR, then this merges. The bump belongs here, so main never carries a schema its own CI can't regenerate.
A malformed x-cozystack-name fails silently, in both directions. NewREST logs the parse error and carries on. I built Kubernetes (prefix kubernetes-) with a set of bad declarations:
"maxLength": "32" / 32.5 / 1e20 declaration dropped, names up to 42 accepted, klog error only
x-cozystack-name as a string or array same
"pattern": "^(?!kube)[a-z]+$" pattern dropped, klog error only (valid JSON Schema, not RE2)
"maxLength": 0 or -1 every name rejected, no log, "must be no more than -1 characters"
"minLength": 40, "maxLength": 32 every name rejected, no log
Nothing panics and no other kind is affected. Still, the first three lose part or all of the declaration without a word, and the last two reject every name with a message that blames the user. The same loader already fails startup on a malformed ApplicationDefinition annotation, so that it "surfaces as a loud startup failure instead of a silent drop to defaults" (buildResourceFromCRD). The doc on TestParseNameSchema says malformed declarations "must surface as errors rather than as a silently unenforced constraint", and the wiring in NewREST does the opposite. The repo treats openAPISchema as untrusted input, and packages from other repositories ship their own definitions. I'd validate the declaration next to the annotations: reject a non-object, a type error, maxLength below 1, minLength above maxLength, and a pattern Go can't compile, with a test per case through the same path. Failing closed for that one kind also works, the way the maxLen <= 0 branch answers with "configuration error".
The upgrade window is not benign. cozystack.kubernetes-application depends on cozystack.cozystack-engine, and the package reconciler turns that into a HelmRelease dependsOn from kubernetes-rd to cozystack-api. So on every upgrade across this change the new API server comes up first, with the old Kubernetes definition. With this head's code and main's cozyrds/kubernetes.yaml, Kubernetes accepts names up to 42 characters. A cluster created then gets a name whose kubernetes-nodes-<name>-md0 release doesn't fit in 53 characters, which is the case the cap exists for. The window closes once kubernetes-rd reconciles and the definition controller restarts cozystack-api, but it opens on every such upgrade. Keeping the 32 floor for Kubernetes when its definition declares nothing, and dropping it a release later, closes it. Either way the "Upgrade ordering is benign" paragraph has to go, since the body becomes the merge commit.
Some text would land in history. Commit 1f5118c ends with "the generator release and the CI pin have to land before this does", a sequencing note that turns false the moment this merges. The body has the same kind of note under "Sequencing", plus the template's HTML comment blocks: the tips at the top and the Screenshots, Downstream and Release note instructions. Merges on main normally drop those.
Not blocking: the API review gate reported "No sizeable API changes detected". Its schema diff walks node keys and properties but not a root x-cozystack-name, so a chart that later tightens its own name cap will pass the gate unnoticed.
What I ran: go test on pkg/registry/apps/application (66 top-level tests), pkg/cmd/server, internal/apigate and internal/controller, all green, and the kubernetes chart's helm-unittest suite (151 tests, green). Nine mutations of the new code and the shipped definition turned exactly the tests I predicted red. E2E was still running on this head when I wrote this.

Verdict
NOT LGTM. The chart-side declaration this mechanism reads cannot be produced by any released cozyvalues-gen, so make generate deletes it and the 32-character cluster-name cap with it. Separately, a declaration that fails to parse takes the cap with it instead of the one field that broke.

Claim mismatches
[PARTIAL] "Upgrade ordering is benign ... falls back to the generic 42-character prefix budget". That fallback is the dead end above. pkg/apiserver/apiserver.go:258 builds each kind's storage at server start and internal/controller/applicationdefinition_controller.go:72 hashes every definition's whole spec into the cozystack-api podTemplate, so the skew window does close on its own. A CR admitted inside it does not un-admit.
Caveats
- The chart surface is inert here: a base-vs-head render differs only in the chart's own
randAlphaNumsecrets, and the helm-unittest suites are green. - Live admission was not exercised. Worth a cluster run once the generator release and the pin bump land.

[MAJOR] x-cozystack-name does not survive make generate
.github/workflows/pre-commit.yml:57 pins cozyvalues-gen v1.6.0, which is still the newest release, and it does not know ## @name. The pre-commit job on this head proves it: the run-make-generate hook reports "files were modified by this hook" and its diff deletes exactly what the PR adds.

$ gh api repos/cozystack/cozyvalues-gen/releases --jq '.[0].tag_name'
v1.6.0
The same job also reverts packages/system/kubernetes-rd/cozyrds/kubernetes.yaml, so both carriers go at once. Without the key validateNameLength falls back to 53 - len("kubernetes-") = 42; a 33-42 character cluster name is admitted, its default pool renders as kubernetes-nodes-<name>-md0 past Helm's 53-character limit, and migration 56 pins and skips it (packages/core/platform/images/migrations/migrations/56:427), so the cluster never gets workers. That is the dead end maxKubernetesClusterName closed. Your Sequencing section says the same thing; this records it as the merge gate rather than disputing it. TestNameCapComesFromTheShippedSchema is the right guard for it: make generate and go test cannot both be green until the generator ships.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
The pin moves to v1.7.0 in this PR (7ab1c1f), which is cozystack/cozyvalues-gen#33 once released. Pre-commit stays red until that release exists, which is the merge gate you describe. For the window after merge, a definition that declares nothing still gets the old 32 floor (legacyNameCaps), so even a regenerated-away declaration can't reopen the 33–42 dead end.

There was a problem hiding this comment.
[MAJOR] one bad field discards a cap that parsed fine
parseNameSchema returns nil on any unmarshal error, and NewREST (rest.go:139-141) only logs it, so nameSchema stays nil and the limit is gone. Five lines further down, the same function does the opposite on a bad pattern: return &ns, ... at rest.go:1351, with a comment saying a chart shipping a broken regex should lose that one constraint rather than its whole declaration. encoding/json keeps decoding past a field type mismatch, so the discarded struct usually holds a perfectly good maxLength:
$ cat main.go # same field tags as applicationNameSchema
err := json.Unmarshal([]byte(`{"minLength":"3","maxLength":32}`), &v)
fmt.Printf("err=%v maxLength=%v\n", err, *v.MaxLength)
$ go run main.go
err=json: cannot unmarshal string into Go struct field ns.minLength of type int64 maxLength=32
A typo in minLength therefore widens Kubernetes names from 32 to 42 and lands in the dead end above, with one klog.Errorf at start-up as the only signal. This is reachable for the case the PR exists to serve: an out-of-tree ApplicationDefinition writes this JSON by hand, with no generator and no shipped-schema test behind it. return &ns, ... at 1346 matches the branch below and is the whole fix.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Agreed, and I went further than return &ns: a partially decoded declaration is not trusted at all. Any decode error, including one bad field beside a good maxLength, now fails closed for the kind with a configuration error, instead of enforcing whatever happened to decode. Unknown keywords are rejected too, so a hand-written maxLenght can't pass silently. Fixed in 17b1f8b.

There was a problem hiding this comment.
[MINOR] a cap without a description drops every hint
reason is overwritten unconditionally, so a chart declaring maxLength and no description yields must be no more than 10 characters, with neither explanation nor the prefix hint the old message carried. Guard the assignment on a non-empty description. No case in TestValidateNameLength passes an empty one.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Fixed in 17b1f8b: with no description, the rejection reads "limit declared by the application". The prefix hint would have been wrong there, since the limit doesn't come from the prefix. TestUndescribedDeclarationStillExplainsItself covers maxLength and minLength.

[MINOR] minLength is unbounded while maxLength is clamped
maxLength can only tighten, but minLength applies as declared: minLength: 60 under a widget- prefix rejects every name that fits the 46-character budget, so the kind is uncreatable and nothing says so at generate or render time. Clamp it at parse time. Related: pattern goes through regexp.MatchString, which is a substring match, so "[a-z]+" accepts 9-x-9. If the Tenant rule moves here as you suggest, an unanchored copy widens it silently.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
minLength above the Helm budget is now a configuration error for the kind (fixed in 17b1f8b), not clamped. Clamping would quietly enforce something other than what the chart declared. On pattern: substring matching is JSON Schema's own semantics, so I kept it and made the overview doc say to anchor a whole-name rule with ^...$. If the Tenant rule ever moves here, it moves anchored, as it is today.

| Package `values.yaml` files carry annotations (`@param`, `@typedef`, `@field`, `@enum`, `@section`) that `cozyvalues-gen` turns into `values.schema.json` and `README.md`. Run `make generate` in the package after editing annotations. A pre-commit hook runs `make generate` across `packages/apps/*` and `packages/extra/*` on every commit to keep these in sync — see [`contributing.md`](./contributing.md) for the regenerate-before-commit rule. | ||
|
|
||
| A chart also declares the limits on its own resource name there, with `## @name {string} - <why>` followed by the constraint tags (`@maxLength`, `@minLength`, `@pattern`) it needs. `cozyvalues-gen` publishes the declaration at the root of `values.schema.json` as `x-cozystack-name`, from where `hack/update-crd.sh` carries it into the ApplicationDefinition, and the aggregated API server enforces it on `metadata.name` for whatever kind the definition describes. The description is the message a rejected name is answered with, so write it as the explanation of the limit. A cap only ever tightens: `prefix + name` must still fit the 53-character Helm release name limit, and a declaration looser than that budget does not widen it. The limits belong in the chart because that is where the facts behind them are — which sub-resources it renders and what release names they take — and a chart that needs nothing beyond the platform-wide limits declares nothing. |

[MINOR] documents an annotation no released generator understands
Present tense about behaviour that does not exist yet, so on main it describes an annotation that is silently ignored. Same class elsewhere: the comment at packages/core/platform/images/migrations/migrations/56:427 points at maxKubernetesClusterName, which this PR deletes.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
The pin now moves to v1.7.0 in this PR, so on main the doc describes the generator CI actually runs. I also added the fail-closed behaviour and the anchoring note. The migration 56 comment now points at the chart's declaration instead of maxKubernetesClusterName.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Reject a null x-cozystack-name declaration.
The value "x-cozystack-name": null passes dec.Decode(&ns). Decoding JSON null into a struct is a no-op and returns no error. parseNameSchema then returns an empty non-nil declaration. resolveNameSchema treats that result as a real declaration and skips legacyNameCaps. A Kubernetes definition with this value therefore drops from the 32-character cap to the 42-character prefix budget. Pool release names can then exceed 53 characters. The docstring says a wrong type is an error. The tests reject "32" and [32], but not null.

Timofei Larkin (@lllamnyp) NOT LGTM. This still can't pass its own pre-commit, because the pin points at cozyvalues-gen v1.7.0 and that release doesn't exist yet. The upgrade window is closed: with main's definitions and this head's code, Kubernetes still stops at 32 characters and Kafka at 44.
The pre-commit job fails at the install step, before any hook runs. The v1.7.0 download returns no archive and the log ends with gzip: stdin: not in gzip format. The bump itself is right. A build of cozyvalues-gen#33's head regenerates the kafka and kubernetes schemas and definitions here byte for byte, and v1.6.0 doesn't. Once #33 ships as v1.7.0 the job needs a rerun, and if the release gets another number the pin has to follow it.
For the upgrade window I built all 31 ApplicationDefinitions through NewREST and probed name lengths 1 to 70 in three combinations: main's code with main's definitions, this head's code with main's definitions, and this head with its own. Every kind accepts the same range in all three, Kubernetes 1 to 32 and Kafka 1 to 44.
The malformed declarations from my last review now fail closed. A string or array in place of the object, maxLength as "32", 32.5 or 1e20, maxLength 0 or -1, minLength above maxLength and a lookahead pattern each refuse creates with the configuration error and log it at start-up.
One form still fails open with nothing logged, and that's the second blocker. JSON null decodes into the struct without an error, so "x-cozystack-name": null becomes an empty declaration. For Kubernetes that skips legacyNameCaps, and names up to 42 are accepted. A null field inside the object, like {"maxLength": null} or {"pattern": null}, drops that constraint the same way. CodeRabbit flagged the whole-object null, but rejecting only that leaves the per-field nulls. I'd reject a null anywhere in the declaration and add both forms to TestInvalidNameSchemaFailsClosed.
The API gate built from this head reports both caps against main as breaking, metadata.name: maxLength constraint added (32) and (44), which is what the body says it will do. CI builds the gate from the merge base, so the job on this PR still prints "No sizeable API changes detected". The commit messages and the body are clean now.
go test passes on pkg/registry/apps/application, internal/apigate and pkg/cmd/server. I made 16 mutations of the new code and 15 turned the test I expected red. The survivor changes minLength > maxLength to >=, since no case has the two equal. That one is not blocking. E2E was still running when I wrote this.
Both caps are facts about what each chart renders, and nothing outside the chart can derive them. Every Kubernetes worker pool is a separate KubernetesNodes release named kubernetes-nodes-<name>-<pool>, so a cluster name has to leave room for the default md0 pool inside the 53-character Helm release name limit: 32 characters. A Kafka KRaft controller pod is named kafka-<name>-c-<hash>-<id> with an 8-character hash, and that hostname has to fit the 63-character DNS-1123 label limit: 44 characters. Each chart now states its cap with a @name annotation, which cozyvalues-gen v1.7.0 publishes as x-cozystack-name in values.schema.json and hack/update-crd.sh carries into the ApplicationDefinition. The pre-commit job moves to that release, the first that understands the annotation. Assisted-by: LLM Signed-off-by: Timofei Larkin <[email protected]>
The API server capped Kubernetes and Kafka names by knowing what those two charts render: worker pool releases under a 17-character prefix, controller pods with a 13-character suffix. That is the charts' knowledge sitting in the platform, and it does not generalise. The next application with a sub-resource budget needs another branch on Kind, and an application served from outside this repository cannot get one at all. An application now declares the limits on its own name in its schema, under x-cozystack-name, and the server applies whatever it finds there for whatever kind the ApplicationDefinition describes. A declaration only tightens: prefix + name must still fit the 53-character Helm release name limit. A rejected name is answered with the chart's own explanation of the limit. The schema is untrusted input, and definitions from other repositories are written by hand. A declaration that cannot be enforced as written, whether an unknown keyword, a wrong type, a limit no name satisfies or a pattern Go cannot compile, refuses creates of that kind with a configuration error. Dropping it would admit names the chart cannot render; applying it would reject every name and blame the user. An upgrade brings cozystack-api up before the definitions it serves are re-rendered, so for a while the new server can read a Kubernetes or Kafka definition that predates its declaration. The two old caps stay as a floor for exactly that case, a definition that declares nothing, until no supported upgrade starts from one. Assisted-by: LLM Signed-off-by: Timofei Larkin <[email protected]>
An application declares the limits on its own metadata.name at the root of its schema, beside properties, where the gate's walk over spec never looked. A chart lowering its name cap or adding a pattern rejects names its previous release accepted, which is the same break as tightening a spec field, so the gate reports it the same way. Reject name keywords that do not match the declared spelling.
DisallowUnknownFields does not reject MaxLength: Go’s encoding/json also matches struct fields without regard to case. If a hand-written Kubernetes declaration contains {"maxLength":32,"MaxLength":42}, the second value replaces the 32-character cap. The REST handler can then accept names that exceed the worker-pool name budget. Check the keys in keywords against an exact-spelling allowlist before decoding. (pkg.go.dev)

Treat constraint-free name schemas as undeclared.
When a Kubernetes ApplicationDefinition supplies x-cozystack-name: {} or {"type":"string"}, parseNameSchema returns a non-nil schema, so resolveNameSchema skips the 32-character legacy cap. A 33-character name fits the 42-character kubernetes- Helm budget, but kubernetes-nodes-<name>-md0 is 54 characters and exceeds Helm’s 53-character limit. Return nil when a declaration has no effective name constraint. The shipped Kubernetes chart declares maxLength: 32; this issue concerns definitions with a constraint-free extension.

Verdict
LGTM with non-blocking notes
Everything I raised last round is closed, and each closure holds under mutation rather than under reading: reverting the fix reddens the test that now covers it. The generator is released and the pin moved with it, so make generate reproduces both committed artifacts. legacyNameCaps covers the upgrade skew directly, which is the right shape for it. What is left is error wording, one doc sentence the code does not keep, and two strictness choices worth naming.

Claim mismatches
[PARTIAL] "On this PR it reports the Kubernetes and Kafka caps as added". The workflow builds cmd/api-gate from the merge-base checkout, which predates diffNameSchema. This head's job log prints Building api-gate from the trusted merge-base checkout. and then No sizeable API changes detected., so the new diff first runs for real on the next PR.
Checked and correct
- The install ordering the new cap depends on:
cozystack.kafka-applicationandcozystack.kubernetes-applicationboth declaredependsOn: cozystack.cozystack-engine, which shipscozystack-api, so the binary lands before the definition that parameterises it.legacyNameCapsatrest.go:1327covers exactly that window for the two kinds that had code-level caps, and its comment states the condition for removing it. - Skew matrix across all 31 ApplicationDefinitions: old binary with new data, and new binary with old data, both still give 32 and 44.
- The
kafka-{{ .name }}-clients-ca-certand-cluster-ca-certentries underspec.secrets.includeinpackages/system/kafka-rd/cozyrds/kafka.yamlare unchanged from the merge base; this PR's only edit to that file is theopenAPISchemaline. Exposing a fullkubernetes.io/tlsSecret to a tenant is worth its own report, but it is not this change.
Caveats
- The cap is cluster data now and nothing cross-checks a declared
maxLengthagainst the child-release budget it protects, so raisingkubernetespast 32 in the definition would admit a cluster whosemd0pool cannot render. The shipped values are pinned, so this is a note rather than a break. legacyNameCapscarries no test or issue for its stated removal condition.- Not executed: anything needing a live apiserver, and cozyvalues-gen's own
@minLength/@patternhandling, for which the passing pre-commit job on this head is the evidence here.

[MINOR] an unparseable openAPISchema is reported as a bad name declaration
parseNameSchema errors on any schema that is not a JSON object (unmarshal OpenAPI schema: ...), and line 1477 turns that into the <Kind> ApplicationDefinition declares an invalid x-cozystack-name on every Create. When the document does not parse there is no declaration to blame, and the operator goes looking for a key that is not there. The merge base only logged that input in buildSpecSchema and kept serving creates, so the refusal also narrows what a hand-written definition may be, which the comment above parseNameSchema calls untrusted. Report the unmarshal failure separately, and give TestInvalidNameSchemaFailsClosed a non-object-schema case.

[MINOR] only a length can be unsatisfiable, not a pattern
docs/agents/overview.md:101 says a declaration carrying "a limit no name satisfies" refuses every create with a configuration error. True for maxLength < 1 and minLength > maxLength; a pattern is only checked for RE2 compilation. {"pattern":"$^"} compiles, nameSchemaErr stays nil, and line 1446 then rejects every name with must match "$^", blaming the operator for the definition, which is the outcome the code comment says it exists to avoid. Narrow the doc sentence to lengths, or reject a pattern that cannot match anything satisfying the declaration's own minLength.

[MINOR] DisallowUnknownFields turns any future generator key into an outage for that kind
One extra key inside the declaration (title, example, another x- hint) makes resolveNameSchema fail and every Create of that kind answer with a configuration error. kafka-rd/kubernetes-rd and cozystack-engine are separate Packages, so the definition can land before the api pod restarts onto a binary that knows the key, and nothing of that kind can be created meanwhile. Latent today, since the shipped declarations use only known keywords. Worth ignoring non-constraint keys, or gating the strictness on a declared version.

[MINOR] the gate is blind to the two declarations the server treats most harshly
nameDeclaration type-asserts to map[string]any and returns nil when that fails, and diffNameSchema short-circuits on a nil head. So "x-cozystack-name": "32" reads to the gate exactly like no declaration at all. A misspelled keyword survives the assertion but matches none of the keys diffSchema walks, so it also reports nothing. Both are the input class the finding above answers with a configuration error on every Create, so the one change that can take a kind offline is the one change that routes without an API owner. Worth reporting an unrecognised key inside the declaration rather than ignoring it.

[MINOR] the declaration is published on .spec
patchSpec unmarshals the whole schema into the published spec property, so x-cozystack-name shows up as a vendor extension of spec in the aggregated OpenAPI, describing something spec does not contain, while metadata.name still carries no limit a client could pre-validate against.

## What this PR does Follow-up to #4367, taking the non-blocking findings from its approving review. Each one is a case where a name declaration (`x-cozystack-name`) was handled more harshly, or more quietly, than the declaration itself warrants. - **An unparseable schema is no longer blamed on a declaration.** A schema that is not a JSON object has no declaration in it, and the spec schema loader already reports it. The API server used to refuse every create of the kind with "declares an invalid x-cozystack-name". It now treats the schema as declaring nothing: creates keep working, and `Kubernetes` and `Kafka` keep their legacy caps. - **Annotation keywords no longer take a kind offline.** Any unknown key inside a declaration used to refuse creates, so a generator adding a `title` or an example would have done the same. JSON Schema annotation keywords (`title`, `default`, `examples`, `deprecated`, `readOnly`, `writeOnly`, `$comment`) and `x-` extensions are now ignored. A constraint keyword the server does not implement, such as `format` or a misspelled `maxLenght`, is still refused, because accepting it would drop it silently. - **The docs no longer overclaim.** They said a declaration no name can satisfy is refused. That is true only for lengths: a pattern is checked to compile, not to match anything, so `$^` rejects every name and names the pattern as the reason. The docs now say that. - **The API review gate sees the declarations the server refuses.** The gate only read a declaration that was an object, and only diffed the keywords it knew. A declaration turned into a string or null, or a misspelled keyword, looked like no change. A changed declaration now goes through the same parser the server uses, and the gate reports it if it cannot be enforced. The parser moves to `pkg/apis/apps/validation` so there is one copy of the rules. - **The declaration no longer leaks into the published OpenAPI for `spec`.** The whole `openAPISchema` is published as the schema of `spec`, so `x-cozystack-name` appeared there as a vendor extension of `spec`. It is now stripped from the published copy. `metadata.name` still carries no limit in the published OpenAPI: it is the shared `ObjectMeta` reference, and a per-kind copy is a bigger change than this one. Not changed: a pattern that can never match is still accepted. Deciding whether a regular expression matches any string within the declared lengths is a much larger piece of code than the mistake it would catch. ### How it is tested - `TestUnparseableSchemaDeclaresNothing`: three non-object schemas; creates still pass, and the Kubernetes legacy cap still holds. - `TestNameDeclarationIgnoresAnnotations`: a declaration carrying `title`, `examples`, `$comment` and an `x-` extension still enforces its `maxLength`. - `TestInvalidNameSchemaFailsClosed` gains `format` as an unsupported constraint keyword. - `TestClassifyNameDeclaration` gains a declaration turned into a string, a misspelled keyword and a null declaration, all reported, and an added annotation, which is not. - `TestPatchSpecLeavesNameDeclarationOffSpec`: the published `spec` drops `x-cozystack-name` and keeps an unrelated vendor extension. ### Downstream repositories No repository is affected beyond the follow-ups already noted on #4367 (the `cozystack/website` pages on annotations and ApplicationDefinitions). What this PR does
The aggregated API server capped two kinds' names by knowing what their charts render. A
Kubernetescluster name was held to 32 characters because every worker pool is aKubernetesNodesrelease namedkubernetes-nodes-<name>-<pool>, and the defaultmd0pool has to fit the 53-character Helm release name limit. AKafkaname was held to 44 because the KRaft controller podkafka-<name>-c-<hash>-<id>has to fit the 63-character DNS-1123 label limit. The arithmetic is right, but it is the charts' knowledge living in the platform: the next application with a sub-resource budget needs anotherif r.kindName == ...branch, and an application served from outside this repository — the whole point ofApplicationDefinition— cannot get one at all.An application now declares the limits on its own name in its own schema, and the server applies whatever it finds there for whatever kind the definition describes. The chart's
values.yamlcarries a## @nameannotation,cozyvalues-genv1.7.0 publishes it at the root ofvalues.schema.jsonasx-cozystack-name, andhack/update-crd.shcarries it into theApplicationDefinition:maxLength, minLengthandpatternare honoured;patternis unanchored, as JSON Schema specifies. A declaration only tightens:prefix + namemust still fit the 53-character Helm limit. A rejected name is answered with the chart's own description, or with "limit declared by the application" when the chart gives none. The schema is untrusted input — definitions from other repositories are written by hand — so a declaration that cannot be enforced as written (not an object, a type error, an unknown keyword such as a misspelled
maxLenght, maxLengthbelow 1, a negativeminLength, minLengthabovemaxLengthor above the Helm budget, a pattern that is not RE2) refuses every create of that kind withconfiguration error: the <Kind> ApplicationDefinition declares an invalid x-cozystack-name: …, and logs the same at start-up. Dropping the declaration would admit names the chart cannot render; applying it would reject every name and blame the user. Other kinds are unaffected, and existing objects of the affected kind can still be read, updated and deleted. An upgrade brings
cozystack-apiup beforekubernetes-rdandkafka-rdre-render (kubernetes-rddepends oncozystack-engine), so the new server can briefly read a definition that predates its declaration. For exactly that case — a definition that declares nothing — the two previous caps stay inlegacyNameCapsas a floor, to be removed once no supported upgrade starts from such a definition. That is the only per-kind knowledge left in the name checks. Also in this PR:
pre-commitjob pinscozyvalues-genv1.7.0, the first release that understands@name(cozystack/cozyvalues-gen#33).x-cozystack-nameof every definition asmetadata.name, so a chart that lowers its cap or adds a pattern is reported like any other tightened field. On this PR it reports the Kubernetes and Kafka caps as added; their effective limits are unchanged.maxKubernetesClusterNamenow points at the chart's declaration. Not in scope, because none of it is a static limit a chart can declare: the
Tenantname pattern inpkg/apis/apps/validation, the computed tenant-namespace length check (it depends on the parent namespace at request time), the tenant quota hierarchy, and the Phase 2 removed-field warning forKubernetes. How it is tested
TestNameCapComesFromTheShippedSchemareads the shippedkubernetesandkafkaApplicationDefinitions off disk, builds storage throughNewRESTas the server does, and checks the cap and the chart's explanation; it then rewritesmaxLengthinside the shipped schema and checks the limit moves with it, which a cap held in code would not.TestInvalidNameSchemaFailsClosedcovers each malformed declaration through the same path,TestLegacyNameCapsCoverUndeclaredDefinitionspins the upgrade floor and that a declaration replaces it, andTestClassifyNameDeclarationcovers the gate.Downstream repositories
