Serialize restore and backup startup.
BackupJobReconciler.Client is mgr.GetClient(), so activeRestoreTargeting reads the cache. If the cache has not observed a new or newly active RestoreJob, the list can return no holder. BackupJobReconciler.Reconcile can then enter the strategy-specific backup path while RestoreJobReconciler.Reconcile performs no reciprocal coordination check. An uncached read alone does not close the check-to-start interval. Add shared per-application coordination that serializes restore startup with BackupJob startup.

Agreed that this is not a lock, and I'd rather not make it one in this PR.
The case the gate targets is a Plan slot firing while a restore has been running for minutes. That is the failure we reproduced, and by then the cache has long observed the RestoreJob. Two cases remain open:
- Cache delay. A RestoreJob and a BackupJob created within the cache's propagation delay of each other.
- Reverse race. A restore starting under a backup that has already started. The description lists this as not covered.
A per-application lock shared by BackupJobReconciler and RestoreJobReconciler would have to span the check and the driver's first write, not only the check. StartedAt is stamped by the driver further down its reconcile, and the restore paths start the same way. In a controller with more than one worker, that means a claim persisted on the cluster, such as a lease or an annotation on the application, that both paths take and release. That is a design change to both paths, so I'd rather propose it as a follow-up covering both directions than grow this fix.

@mattia-eleuteri, agreed. I framed the gate as if it must serialize startup, but this PR targets Plan slots that fire while a restore is already running. The gate addresses that case; it does not close the cache-delay or reverse race. Shared coordination across both startup paths is a separate design change, so I will not press for it in this PR.
Would you like me to open an issue for the two remaining races?

Learning: In cozystack PR #4544, the restore gate in `internal/backupcontroller/backupjob_restore_lock.go` is intended to hold a not-yet-started BackupJob when a Plan slot fires during an already-running restore. It is not a per-application lock. Cache-delay races and restores starting after a backup are known gaps proposed for a follow-up that coordinates both `BackupJobReconciler` and `RestoreJobReconciler` through their startup writes.

…hout a Backup Addresses review on cozystack#4544. A hold whose status write failed was logged and requeued as though it had been recorded. The job was still held, since nothing past the gate ran, but the Pending phase and the RestoreInProgress condition were not there to say why. The error is now returned, so the manager retries the write with backoff. A RestoreJob naming a complete target was accepted without reading its Backup, so one whose Backup was gone still held the application's backups until the restore controller failed it. The Backup is now read first and a missing one is skipped whatever the target. A complete target is still used as it is, with its API group defaulted rather than inherited, which is what the drivers do. Assisted-by: LLM Signed-off-by: Mattia Eleuteri <[email protected]>

mattia-eleuteri NOT LGTM. The gate skips a restore that asks for targetNamespace whatever its driver, but only the Velero driver reads that option, so a CNPG restore that carries it still runs in place and its application's backups are not held.
Business context: scheduled BackupJobs start against an application that a RestoreJob is still rewriting, and on CNPG an in-place restore then ends up archiving onto the source's WAL prefix; this PR makes an unstarted BackupJob wait for such a restore.
Blockers
B1: the targetNamespace skip applies to drivers that ignore the option
restoresIntoAnotherNamespace runs for every RestoreJob before its Backup is read, so it cannot know which driver will handle the restore. Only resolveRestoreTarget in velerostrategy_controller.go moves the target to options.targetNamespace. resolveCNPGRestoreTarget always uses backup.Namespace, and the Job, Altinity, Kafka, RabbitMQ and Redis paths use restoreJob.Namespace. parseCNPGRestoreOptions is a plain json.Unmarshal, so an unknown targetNamespace is dropped without an error. A Postgres RestoreJob with options: {targetNamespace: other} is therefore an in-place restore that the gate lets backups run against, which is the incident this PR describes. The test case "restore sent to another namespace" pins this: its Backup is a Postgres one, and it expects no hold.
Fix: check the option only when backup.Spec.StrategyRef.Kind is the Velero kind (the restore dispatcher switches on the same field), which means moving the check after the Backup Get. Flip that test case to a Velero Backup and add a Postgres one with targetNamespace that is held.
B2: the second commit carries review-iteration wording
The body of 521debf opens with "Addresses review on #4544." and then describes the previous version of this same PR ("A hold whose status write failed was logged and requeued..."). docs/agents/contributing.md (Review Blockers) rules out review-iteration vocabulary and a bare issue number in a commit body, and this repo merges with merge commits, so the body lands on main as it is. Squashing it into the first commit fixes it, since both commits change the same new code.
B3: one docstring restates its signature
// ptrString reads an optional string, "" when unset. says what the four lines below it say. The same Review Blockers section treats a signature restatement as blocking. Drop it.
Non-blocking follow-ups
- The release note says "This stops a CNPG backup from re-pointing an in-place restored cluster at the source's WAL archive." That holds only for a job that has not started. A CNPG BackupJob that stamped
startedAtbefore the restore still callsapplyClusterPluginBackupon every poll (cnpgstrategy_controller.go:283, beforeensureCNPGBackup). The body already scopes that case out, so the release note should say "a backup that has not started yet". - The Name/Kind merge in
restoreJobTargetcannot run: the RestoreJob CRD requires bothkindandnameontargetApplicationRef, so the only path to the Backup's ref is a nil target. Deleting eitherif t.Name != ""orif t.Kind != ""leaves the tests green. Same for the APIGroup comparison insameApplication: no case has the same kind and name under another group. - After the hold lifts,
Ready=Falsewith reasonRestoreInProgressand the message "waiting for RestoreJob ... to finish" stays on the job while it runs. The CNPG driver writesReadyagain only when the backup completes or fails.
What I checked: go test ./internal/backupcontroller/... passes at 521debf. Removing the gate, ignoring startedAt, and treating Succeeded or Failed as non-terminal each turn the new tests red. RBAC for restorejobs and backups list/watch is already in the backupstrategy-controller ClusterRole. The Plan startingDeadline claim matches plan_controller.go: the deadline only applies when a job is created. The red "Unit & controller tests" on c4fbd5f (run 36454130741) is not from this diff. hack/image-builders-cross-compile.bats fails on main at 6d759cc itself, on the shadowbox Dockerfile, and it fails the same way on an unrelated PR run 15 minutes later (36455416690).

Only the Velero driver reads targetNamespace. CNPG and the Job-based drivers restore into the RestoreJob's own namespace and silently ignore the option, so this skips a live in-place restore. The check needs the Backup's strategyRef.kind (see B1).
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Fixed in a9cd40f. The check now runs after the Backup Get and only when backup.Spec.StrategyRef.Kind is Velero. It compares against backup.Namespace, as resolveRestoreTarget does. A Postgres RestoreJob carrying targetNamespace now holds its application's backups.

This Backup is a Postgres one, and the CNPG driver ignores targetNamespace, so this restore runs in place and should hold. Make it a Velero Backup and add the Postgres case that is held.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Done. The case now uses a Velero Backup of a VMInstance and expects no hold. There are two new cases: a Velero restore naming its own namespace, which is held, and the Postgres restore with targetNamespace, which is held. Replacing the Velero-kind check with an always-true condition turns the Postgres case red.

Aleksei Sviridkin (@lexfrei) thanks. All three blockers and the three follow-ups are addressed in a9cd40f, now the only commit on the branch. B1. B2. The branch is squashed into one commit, and its body describes the change as it lands. B3. The Follow-ups:
Each guard was checked the same way, by removing it and watching a test fail: the Velero-kind check, the API-group comparison, the own-namespace comparison, and the reason check in the release.

Include cross-namespace Velero restores in the BackupJob hold lookup.
When a Velero RestoreJob in namespace A sets targetNamespace to B, activeRestoreTargeting called for B lists only RestoreJobs in B, and restoreJobTarget excludes that copy restore. If application X does not yet exist in B, the unstarted BackupJob proceeds to reconcileVelero. createVeleroBackup then reads X from B before it creates the Velero Backup. The read returns NotFound, and the controller marks the BackupJob failed. The scheduled backup is lost instead of waiting for the restore.
Resolve the effective restore destination and include matching RestoreJobs from their source namespaces in this coordination check. This is a narrow workflow failure, not a major data-integrity failure.

mattia-eleuteri NOT LGTM, one thing left. The three earlier blockers are fixed, and so are the release note and the dead merge.
Blocker
B1: a target without an API group resolves to a different application than the drivers restore into
When targetApplicationRef has no apiGroup, the gate defaults it to apps.cozystack.io, and the docstring says this is what the drivers do. They do the opposite: they start from the Backup's applicationRef and replace the API group only when the target sets one. resolveCNPGRestoreTarget (cnpgstrategy_controller.go:1165) works this way, and so do the Job, Altinity, Kafka, RabbitMQ, Redis, MariaDB, PSMDB and FoundationDB paths. Velero ignores the API group.
I checked it with a throwaway test at a9cd40f. The Backup is for example.com/Postgres/pg, and a running RestoreJob targets {kind: Postgres, name: pg2}. The CNPG driver resolves that to example.com/Postgres/pg2. The gate does not hold a BackupJob for example.com/Postgres/pg2, and it does hold one for apps.cozystack.io/Postgres/pg2, which the restore never touches. This only shows up for an application outside the default group, but the docstring states the opposite of what the drivers do, and that sentence lands on main.
Fix: when t.APIGroup is nil, take it from backup.Spec.ApplicationRef before normalizing, and add a case for it to TestActiveRestoreTargeting. The docstring then has to change too. "There is nothing to merge" and "defaulted, as the drivers default it" both stop being true.
Non-blocking
The releaseRestoreHold docstring, the commit body and the PR body say the drivers write Ready again only when the backup completes or fails. The CNPG driver also writes ClusterNotReady and CNPGBackupTransientFailure during a run, and MariaDB writes MariaDBNotReady. The reason for clearing the condition still holds, but "only" is wrong. The same wording was in my previous review, so this one is on me. If you touch the docstring for B1 anyway, you can soften it there.
What I checked: go test ./internal/backupcontroller/... passes at a9cd40f. Each new guard turns a test red when mutated: the Velero-kind check forced to true or false, the API-group comparison, the own-namespace comparison, the release call, the reason check, and the status write in the release. The kind check uses strategyv1alpha1.VeleroStrategyKind, the same constant the restore dispatcher switches on, and compares against backup.Namespace the way resolveRestoreTarget does. The release writes status only when Ready carries RestoreInProgress, and nothing else sets that reason. The commit message is clean. The red "Unit & controller tests" in run 36457261096 is hack/image-builders-cross-compile.bats failing on the shadowbox Dockerfile, the same failure as on main. E2E has not reported yet.

The drivers inherit the Backup's API group when the target leaves it unset (resolveCNPGRestoreTarget and the Job, Altinity, Kafka, RabbitMQ, Redis, MariaDB, PSMDB and FoundationDB paths), so this should take backup.Spec.ApplicationRef.APIGroup when t.APIGroup is nil before normalizing. With a Backup of example.com/Postgres/pg and a target {kind: Postgres, name: pg2}, CNPG restores into example.com/Postgres/pg2, while this resolves apps.cozystack.io/Postgres/pg2 (see B1).
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Fixed in af8cf74. The target now starts from the Backup's applicationRef, takes the target's kind and name, and takes its API group only when it sets one, as resolveCNPGRestoreTarget does. The docstring says so now.
Your case is in TestActiveRestoreTargeting, in both directions. With a Backup of example.com/Postgres/pg and a target {kind: Postgres, name: pg2}, a BackupJob for example.com/Postgres/pg2 is held, and one for apps.cozystack.io/Postgres/pg2 is not. Both cases go red when the target is taken as it is.
Nothing on the backup path looks at restores. A Plan creates its BackupJobs on schedule, and the BackupJob reconciler dispatches them to their driver whatever else is happening to the application. For CNPG that is not merely a backup of a half-restored state: every BackupJob reconcile re-applies the Cluster's barman plugin, and on a cluster under an in-place restore it can land after the chart has re-rendered the Cluster with its new serverName and put it back on the source's. The restored cluster then archives onto the source's WAL prefix and its recovery fails with "WAL archive check failed ... Expected empty archive". This was reproduced with a backup triggered a few seconds after an in-place restore, and an hourly plan overlaps a restore of up to thirty minutes about half the time. A BackupJob that has not started yet now waits while a non-terminal RestoreJob in its namespace writes into the same application, resolved as the drivers resolve it: the Backup's applicationRef, with the target's kind and name when a targetApplicationRef is set, and the target's API group only when it names one. A RestoreJob whose Backup is gone holds nothing, since the restore controller fails it on its next pass. options.targetNamespace is honoured only for a Backup taken by the Velero strategy, the one driver that reads it; the CNPG and Job-based drivers ignore the option and restore in place, so their restores hold whatever it says. The held job stays Pending with a Ready=False RestoreInProgress condition naming the restore and is requeued, rather than failed, so a scheduled run still happens once the restore ends. A failed write of that status is returned, so the manager retries it. When the restore ends the condition is removed before the job starts, since it would otherwise read "waiting" until the driver next writes Ready, which for a healthy run is when the backup completes. A run that has already started is left alone: its driver owns state the gate would strand. Assisted-by: LLM Signed-off-by: Mattia Eleuteri <[email protected]>

The Velero driver resolves a restore's target from the Backup's applicationRef, overriding only the kind and name, and restores the Backup's resources. A targetApplicationRef.apiGroup never reaches it. The restore gate honoured that group all the same, so a Velero RestoreJob naming another group let a BackupJob of the application actually being restored start against it, and held one of an application the restore never touches. activeRestoreTargetingperforms one non-atomic lookup. ARestoreJobcan setStartedAtand enterRunningafter that lookup but before the BackupJob dispatches its strategy. The Velero strategy can create a backup during the restore. The Job strategy can persist
StartedAt, requeue, and create its Job on a later reconcile while the restore remains active. The existingStartedAtguard does not prevent this because it only avoids interrupting an already-started BackupJob.Use a shared per-application atomic claim or lock that both controllers acquire before starting work. A second read at this gate is not sufficient because the restore can start after that read.

mattia-eleuteri LGTM. B1 is fixed.
A target without an API group now stays in the Backup's group, as it does in every driver that reads the target's group. A Velero restore keeps the Backup's group, as resolveRestoreTarget does. The docstring matches.
I broke the code twice to check the new cases. Taking the target as it is turns TestActiveRestoreTargeting red, and so does honouring the target's group for a Velero Backup. Tests pass, the branch merges cleanly into main, and the second commit message is fine.

What this PR does
Nothing on the backup path looks at restores. A Plan creates its BackupJobs on schedule (
plan_controller.go), andBackupJobReconcilerdispatches them to their driver whatever else is happening to the application. A backup taken during a restore captures a half-restored state at best, and for CNPG it does worse. We hit it on a v1.6.3 cluster. helm-controller applied the restored Cluster with
bootstrap.newServerName, and four seconds later a BackupJob of the same application re-applied the barman plugin with the source'sserverName. The restored cluster archived onto the source's WAL prefix, and its recovery job died withWAL archive check failed for server <cluster>: Expected empty archive. CorrectingserverNameby hand let the same restore finish, which is what identified the writer.currentBarmanServerNamepreserves the live value on most paths, but not in the window where the restored Cluster is being re-rendered. An on-demand run can be refused by whoever creates it, but a scheduled one cannot, and there is nosuspendon a Plan. With an hourly plan and a CNPG restore allowed thirty minutes, the overlap happens about half the time.A BackupJob that has not started yet (
status.startedAtunset) now waits while a non-terminal RestoreJob in its namespace writes into the same application. The target is resolved as the drivers resolve it (resolveCNPGRestoreTargetand the Job-based paths): the referenced Backup'sapplicationRef, with the target'skindandnamewhen atargetApplicationRefis set, and the target's API group only when it names one, so a target without one stays in the Backup's group. A Velero restore always stays in the Backup's group, since the Velero driver drops the target's API group and restores the Backup's resources. A RestoreJob whose Backup is gone is skipped, since the restore controller fails it on its next pass.options.targetNamespaceis honoured only when the Backup was taken by the Velero strategy, the one driver that reads it: the CNPG and Job-based drivers ignore the option and restore in place, so their restores hold whatever it says. The held job staysPendingwith aReady=Falsecondition, reasonRestoreInProgress, naming the restore, and is requeued every 30s. It is not failed: a scheduled run should still happen once the restore ends. A failed write of that status is returned, so the manager retries it, and once the restore ends the condition is removed before the job starts, since it would otherwise read "waiting" until the driver next writesReady, which for a healthy run is when the backup completes. The gate sits after BackupClass resolution and strategy validation, so third-party strategies are unaffected, and before credentials projection, so a held job projects nothing.
What happens to a delayed scheduled run: the Plan controller only decides when to create a BackupJob (a slot within
startingDeadline, 300s, of now). Once created, the job is not subject to that deadline, so a held run keeps its<plan>-<unix-minutes>name and runs once the restore ends, later than its slot. If the restore outlasts the next slot, that slot's job is created and held too, and both run after the restore. Nothing is skipped, and nothing is deduplicated. Not covered, deliberately:
options.targetNamespacedoes not hold this namespace's backups. The lookup is namespaced.Tests:
TestActiveRestoreTargetingcovers the resolution matrix (in place, to-copy into and out of the application, terminal phases, another kind or another API group under the same name, a to-copy target inheriting the Backup's API group, a Velero target naming another API group, a Velero restore sent to another namespace or naming its own, a Postgres restore carryingtargetNamespace, a missing Backup with or without a target).TestReconcile_RetriesAHoldItCouldNotRecordandTestReleaseRestoreHoldcover the status writes, and the held-job test reconciles again after the restore ends to check the condition is gone.TestReconcile_HoldsABackupJobWhileItsApplicationIsRestoredis the behavioural regression: it fails with the gate removed (the job reaches projection and dispatch).TestReconcile_DoesNotHoldARunningBackupJobchecks that a started job is not held.Backport: a candidate for
release-1.6, where the reproduction was seen.backupjob_controller.godiffers frommainonly in the dispatch switch and the Go 1.27 modernizers, so the cherry-pick should be clean or close to it.Screenshots
