fix(e2e): hold replicated-lane LINSTOR cleanup to a pre-suite baseline and delete kafka suite PVCs - #4651
Conversation
The kubernetes suites' cleanup in the replicated lane demanded 90 GiB free on every LINSTOR node. Volumes that earlier suites and the platform legitimately keep can hold a node under that figure even when the suite reclaimed everything it used, so the cleanup failed suites that had leaked nothing. Both lanes now record the per-node baseline before the suite creates anything and compare against it on cleanup. The 90 GiB figure is what a replicated suite needs to place its workers and CDI scratch volumes, so it stays as a precondition checked before the baseline, and a shortfall there is reported as the sandbox's state rather than the suite's. A run that fails before recording its baseline used to leave the previous suite's file in place for its cleanup to compare against; the file is now removed when the suite starts. Assisted-by: LLM Signed-off-by: Aleksei Sviridkin <[email protected]>
The kafka chart sets deleteClaim: false on both node pools, so deleting an app leaves its volumes behind on purpose. The suite deleted its apps and never the volumes. The 35 GiB a run leaves in tenant-test, 20 GiB of it on one node, kept that LINSTOR node short of space for the kubernetes suites that run after it. The backup round-trip leaves its two clusters' volumes in tenant-root the same way. Each test now deletes the PVCs by strimzi.io/cluster once its apps are gone, and waits for them to go. The kafka test does it from a step cleanup, so a failed run reclaims them too. Assisted-by: LLM Signed-off-by: Aleksei Sviridkin <[email protected]>

Two small open concerns remain: how the Kafka PVC cleanup behaves if a deletion races, and whether the stale-baseline test would catch a removed baseline reset. Neither affects production. Both are worth a quick check before merging. Security Architecture ReviewSecurity architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to The cleanup changes are bounded to named test clusters and preserve existing storage through baseline comparison rather than deletion. Official Chainsaw docs:
- **Delete by selector:** `delete.ref` can identify one object by name/namespace or multiple objects using `labels`. ([kyverno.github.io](https://kyverno.github.io/chainsaw/main/reference/apis/chainsaw.v1alpha1/?utm_source=openai))
- **Delete timeout:** Configure the `delete` timeout globally, per test/step, or on the individual delete operation. The docs describe this as the timeout for deleting resources. ([kyverno.github.io](https://kyverno.github.io/chainsaw/0.1.7/configuration/timeouts/?utm_source=openai))
- **Cleanup timeout:** `cleanup` is separate: it controls automatic removal of resources Chainsaw created during a test. Cleanup waits for deletion to finish; its timeout can be configured globally, per test, or per step—not per operation. ([kyverno.github.io](https://kyverno.github.io/chainsaw/0.2.3/quick-start/cleanup/?utm_source=openai))
The docs establish selector syntax and timeout configuration, but don’t specifically say whether a selector matching no resources is treated as success or failure. That behavior remains unresolved in these references. ([kyverno.github.io](https://kyverno.github.io/chainsaw/main/operations/delete/?utm_source=openai))

Kyverno Chainsaw v0.2.15 delete operation source selector no resources not found cleanup timeout
💡 Result:
For **Chainsaw v0.2.15**, the delete action’s source is `file` or `ref`—not a live label/field selector. The runner resolves the source into resources, then creates one delete operation per resource. **Inference:** if the source resolves to zero resources, there are no delete operations to run; this differs from a `kubectl delete ... -l ...` selector, which queries the cluster and may print “No resources found.” ([github.com](https://github.com/kyverno/chainsaw/blob/v0.2.15/pkg/runner/operations/delete.go))
A delete operation has its own timeout (`delete.timeout`); the v0.2.15 runner passes it to the delete operation. **Cleanup timeout is separate**: it applies when Chainsaw removes resources created for a test, not to an explicit `delete` step. Increasing cleanup timeout therefore won’t fix an explicit delete timing out; configure the delete timeout instead. ([github.com](https://github.com/kyverno/chainsaw/blob/v0.2.15/pkg/runner/operations/delete.go))
The source confirms resource expansion and timeout wiring, but doesn’t establish the exact error behavior for an empty source or selector. If you share the delete YAML and the error text, I can pinpoint whether it’s empty source expansion, a delete failure, or test cleanup. ([github.com](https://github.com/kyverno/chainsaw/blob/v0.2.15/pkg/runner/operations/delete.go))

💡 Result:
In **Chainsaw v0.2.15**, `pkg/runner/operations/delete.go` doesn’t handle `NotFound` itself. It constructs the delete operation and returns the result of `op.Exec(...)`, so whether a missing resource is ignored or reported as an error is determined by the delegated `pkg/engine/operations/delete` implementation. ([raw.githubusercontent.com](https://raw.githubusercontent.com/kyverno/chainsaw/v0.2.15/pkg/runner/operations/delete.go))
I couldn’t verify that delegated implementation’s `NotFound` behavior from the available source, so the runner file alone doesn’t establish whether deleting a missing resource succeeds.

💡 Result:
In **Chainsaw v0.2.15**, `pkg/runner/operations/delete.go` does **not** itself handle `IgnoreNotFound`: it builds the delete operation and calls `op.Exec(...)`. The behavior, if supported, would be implemented in the imported `pkg/engine/operations/delete` package—but I couldn’t verify that package’s v0.2.15 source from the available pages. ([github.com](https://github.com/kyverno/chainsaw/blob/v0.2.15/pkg/runner/operations/delete.go))
So this file alone doesn’t establish whether a missing resource is ignored.

Set the explicit delete timeout to 8m.
This is an explicit delete operation. The suite-level cleanup: 8m does not override the global delete: 5m timeout. PVC deletion can therefore fail after 5m.
A label ref with no matches expands to no delete operations, so the empty-selection case does not need a guard.

For a node with only thick ZFS pools, `linstor sp l` reports the free capacity cached at the satellite's last report rather than asking the satellite, and that report can land while `zfs destroy` is still freeing blocks in the background. A cleanup that had removed every volume it created could then wait out its whole budget against a figure that never moved. That residue has reached about 0.9 GiB, with no known upper bound, against 1 GiB for the smallest volume a suite is known to have leaked, so a byte tolerance has no safe value between the two. Record the datasets under each node's pool before the suite, read with `zfs list` on that node's satellite, and wait until no dataset outside that set remains. A leaked volume is then reported by name and node, and a destroy still freeing space in the background does not count. Assisted-by: LLM Signed-off-by: Aleksei Sviridkin <[email protected]>

Replicated lane path (90 GiB precondition, zfs list on qemu nodes) ran only against bats fakes, PR runs use local storage class, so next nightly is the real check.
timeouts.delete: 8m in kafka test is not needed for me, PVC deletes took under a second in E2E log.
Title says replicated-lane but diff changes both lanes.
## What this PR does The kubernetes suites' LINSTOR cleanup check now compares dataset names per node, and prints the leftover names when it fails (#4651). This PR puts the rest of what a triager needs into `cozyreport.tgz` on every run, green or red: the size of each dataset, its `origin` and `creation`, the snapshots, the pool's pending frees, and the LINSTOR volume list. What `hack/cozyreport.sh` now collects: - `linstor/zfs-pools.txt`: the zpool behind each ZFS storage pool, per node, taken from `StorDriver/StorPoolName` in `linstor --machine-readable sp l`. - `linstor/zfs/<node>.txt`: that node's satellite runs `zpool get -p freeing, leaked, allocated, free` and `zfs list -p -t all -o name, used, avail, refer, origin, creation -r` over the node's pools. - `linstor/volumes.txt`: `linstor v l`, next to the existing `resources.txt`. Sizes are exact bytes, so the sizes of leftover datasets can be summed against the pool root's `avail`. That `avail` can differ from `storage-pools.txt` without anything leaking: on a node with only thick pools, `linstor sp l` serves the free capacity cached at the satellite's last report. A dataset LINSTOR could not destroy because snapshots depend on it is renamed to `_deleted_<name>` in the same pool, so a search for leftovers has to look for that prefix as well as `pvc-`. A pool that `zpool get` or `zfs list` cannot open does not cost the listing of the other pools. `zpool get`'s message and exit status go into the listing, and `zfs list` lists the rest. A node LINSTOR names no ZFS pool for gets a note instead of a listing, because `zfs list -r` with no pool argument lists every pool on the machine. A satellite whose `spec.nodeName` cannot be read gets a note that says so. All reads go through the bounded exec reader, like the other LINSTOR reads, and the time budget in the script header counts them. The second commit changes how that reader marks a read that wrote output and then exited non-zero without hitting the timeout. It used to append `TRUNCATED ... part way through, not because the command finished`. But `kubectl exec` passes the remote command's status through, and `zfs list` over one missing pool prints a complete listing of the others and exits 1. The marker now names the exit status and says the status can't tell an error after complete output from a cut stream. This changes the marker for every LINSTOR exec read. The timeout marker stays as it was. Tested with `hack/cozytest.sh hack/cozyreport.bats`. The new tests run the controller and satellite shells against stub `linstor`, `zpool` and `zfs`, with the real `jq`. They cover a failed and an unparsable storage-pool read, a pool row with a missing, empty or blank backing name, a non-ZFS pool, a pool name with a space, a pool that `zpool` and `zfs` cannot open, a failing `zfs`, and an unreadable node name. A test goes red if any of these break: the filter that keeps non-ZFS pools out, the filter that drops a missing, empty or blank pool name, the jq exit status, the `zpool` fallthrough, the node-name note, or the reader's new wording. What this PR does
This fixes two cleanup failures in the kubernetes suites. The nightly runs failed
kubernetes-previousandkubernetes-latestin the replicated storage lane. PR runs failkubernetes-latestwithLINSTOR pools did not return to their pre-suite baseline within 300s.The replicated lane asked for too much free space at cleanup. It wanted 90 GiB free on every LINSTOR node, and volumes from earlier suites kept srv2 at 83 GiB, so both suites failed without leaking anything (nightly run 36659663201). A replicated suite still needs those 90 GiB for its workers and CDI scratch volumes, so the floor is now checked before the suite starts. If a node is short there, the suite fails with the per-node table and an error that blames the sandbox, not the suite.
Cleanup in both lanes now compares against a baseline recorded before the suite creates anything, and that baseline is no longer free bytes. On a node whose pools are all thick ZFS,
linstor sp ldoes not ask the satellite for free space. The controller fetches it live only for nodes with thin pools and otherwise returns the value cached at the satellite's last report. In LINSTOR v1.33.3 that isFreeCapacityFetcherProto.assembleRequestsfiltering onhasThinPools, withCtrlStorPoolListApiCallHandlerfalling back togetFreeCapacityLastUpdated. The last report can be taken whilezfs destroyis still freeing blocks in the background. A cleanup that had removed everything then kept polling a frozen figure 0.4 to 0.9 GiB short and failed after 300s. A byte tolerance does not fix that, because the residue is already close to the smallest volume a suite is known to have leaked (1 GiB).The baseline is now the set of ZFS datasets under each node's LINSTOR pool. It is read with
zfs listinside that node'slinstor-satellitecontainer. The zpool name comes from the pool'sStorDriver/StorPoolNameproperty, because it isdataon QEMU nodes anddata-srvNin container mode. Cleanup waits until no dataset outside the baseline remains. A destroyed dataset leaves the namespace whenzfs destroyreturns, whether or not its blocks are still being freed, so background freeing no longer fails the check. A real leak, like the 21 GiB scratch volume left on srv3 in an earlier run, is reported by node and dataset name instead of a KiB difference. A node whose pool cannot be read fails the check. A run that fails before it records a baseline no longer compares against the previous suite's file. Every read the new probe makes runs undertimeout -k 5 30, so a hung controller or satellite fails one poll and the wait still ends with its failure message. The kafka suite deleted its apps but never their PVCs. The chart keeps them on purpose with
deleteClaim: false. One run left 35 GiB intenant-test, 20 GiB of it on srv2, and the backup round trip left its two clusters' volumes intenant-rootthe same way. Each test now deletes its clusters' PVCs bystrimzi.io/clusterafter the apps are gone and waits for them. Thekafkatest does it from a step cleanup, so it also runs on a failed run.The tests cover both fixes.
hack/linstor-storage-mode_test.batshas cases for a clean cleanup, a volume still listed on the first poll and gone on the next while the cached free capacity stays short, a leaked volume, a node that cannot be read, a hung satellite read, a missing or stale baseline, and the replicated-lane floor. Its fake runs the real controller-sidejqfilter against a LINSTOR-shaped listing.hack/kafka-suite-pvc-cleanup_test.batschecks that each cluster's PVC delete is in the suite and runs after the app cleanup. One stub line goes intohack/run-kubernetes-talos-diagnostics_test.bats, because that test callscozy_cleanupwith no baseline and only checks the order of the deletes. The new guards were mutation-tested.Some limits stay as they are. The local lane waits for dataset names to disappear, not for the freed space, and has no free-space floor, so a background destroy can still be freeing blocks when the next suite starts. The 90 GiB precondition in the replicated lane still reads the cached free capacity, and its comment says so. The two
kubectl execreads incozy_wait_linstor_pool_freewere there before this PR and still have no time limit of their own.Two related problems stay out of this PR. The
kafka-metadatasuite leaks PVCs the same way, tracked in #4641. The stale comment inexamples/backups/kafka/cleanup.shand the missing PVC pre-clean in the round trip are in #4649.Closes #4617, closes #4616, closes #4653
