go-unit-tests only reached pkg/registry, pkg/config and pkg/cmd/server, so the apiserver serializer and fuzz round-trip tests, the generated applyconfiguration and openapi suites, lineage, ovnstatus and every cmd package but backport-audit never ran in CI. Those are exactly the tests a Kubernetes library bump can break. All of them pass today. cmd/backport-audit is now covered by go-unit-tests, so its dedicated target goes away. Assisted-by: LLM Signed-off-by: Aleksei Sviridkin <[email protected]>
server-side apply, content negotiation, Table output on watch, the served OpenAPI v2 and v3 documents and building the server without etcd depend on k8s.io/apiserver, kube-openapi and structured-merge-diff as well as on code here, so a library bump can change them with no diff in this repository. The tests record today's answers: applies from different field managers never conflict because the storage keeps no managedFields, and protobuf is refused with 406 even when the client offers JSON as a fallback. Assisted-by: LLM Signed-off-by: Aleksei Sviridkin <[email protected]>
The webhook had no tests for its admission handler, so a client-go or api bump could change the patch it returns unnoticed. The namespace lookup becomes a package variable so the handler can run without a cluster. Assisted-by: LLM Signed-off-by: Aleksei Sviridkin <[email protected]>
A body without a request field dereferenced a nil pointer. net/http recovers the panic, so the caller saw a dropped connection instead of an error, and every such call logged a stack trace. Assisted-by: LLM Signed-off-by: Aleksei Sviridkin <[email protected]>
The upstream kubevirt CSI node service is built here against the mount-utils this module replaces it with, not the release upstream tests against. Pin what it relies on: mount point detection, cleanup of a published target, and the blkid, mkfs and fsck calls of SafeFormatAndMount. Assisted-by: LLM Signed-off-by: Aleksei Sviridkin <[email protected]>
The require line still named an older csi-driver commit than the replace directive builds, so reading go.mod gave the wrong version. Assisted-by: LLM Signed-off-by: Aleksei Sviridkin <[email protected]>
The CSI, LINSTOR, multus, Harbor and redis-backup images call tools at runtime that their base images or build stages install: mkfs and mount.nfs, drbd, lvm and zfs, the CNI plugins, nginx and trivy under a fixed uid, redis 8. A base or tool bump that drops one or changes its major version still builds, and only fails once the image runs in a cluster. The kubevirt CSI driver and its sidecars also run on whatever CPU a tenant VM is given. A userland built for x86-64-v3 starts, and then every exec of mkfs, blkid or mount fails on an older vCPU, which is how the sidecars broke before. The driver's filesystem tools and libc, and each sidecar's entrypoint and libc if it has one, must not require more than x86-64-v2, the floor the AlmaLinux 9 base already sets. C objects declare that level in a GNU property note; Go binaries record it as their GOAMD64 build setting, which is read separately. A file that records neither fails the check rather than passing unjudged. Each PR build job now runs those checks against the images it pushed, found by diffing the tree's image references before and after the build. Fork PRs are skipped because their images are not in a registry yet, and the unit lane, which builds nothing, runs no container. Assisted-by: LLM Signed-off-by: Aleksei Sviridkin <[email protected]>
securecookie decodes and authenticates the dashboard session on every request. Pin the round trip and the rejection of tampered, foreign and expired cookies, so a securecookie bump that changes either shows up here. Assisted-by: LLM Signed-off-by: Aleksei Sviridkin <[email protected]>
Both handlers decoded the session cookie inline, and the refresh lived inside the proxy handler, so neither could be tested without running main. They move into decodeSession and refreshedCookie unchanged. The refresh test records what happens today: a session read back from a signed cookie is never refreshed. Assisted-by: LLM Signed-off-by: Aleksei Sviridkin <[email protected]>
securecookie encodes sessions with gob, so the issued and expires times come back as int64. The refresh looked for a float64, found none and never fired, so --cookie-refresh=1h, which the chart sets, did nothing. The times are now read in either form. A refreshed cookie keeps the token's expiry as its own: it gets a new issued time and a fresh securecookie timestamp, never a longer life than the token inside it. Because the securecookie timestamp is renewed too, a cookie in use no longer runs into securecookie's 30-day maximum age; the token's own expiry is what ends it. Encoding a session fails when it outgrows securecookie's maximum length, which a large token can reach. Sign-in set an empty cookie and redirected in that case, and the refresh, now that it runs, would have replaced a working cookie with an empty one. Sign-in now shows an error instead, and a refresh that cannot encode leaves the current cookie in place. Assisted-by: LLM Signed-off-by: Aleksei Sviridkin <[email protected]>
Renovate should not keep proposing updates that are known not to work. A new rule holds each such dependency and names the reason in its description: cel-go v0.32's new module path, kube-openapi's move to structured-merge-diff v7 and that v7 itself, the Flux API modules running ahead of the installed CRDs, the controller-runtime admission API on jsonpatch v2, the jwk.Cache that jwx v4 removed, the CDI API upstream csi-driver no longer compiles against, the node 18 engine outline-server declares, the x86-64-v3 floor of AlmaLinux 10, the Flux CLI version the flux action has to install, and the one-minor skew kubectl allows against the management cluster. The Flux hold also splits patch from minor updates, without which Renovate would offer only the newest minor and drop the patches with it. The Harbor rule now states the build-time assertion that fails when its build bases change version. Assisted-by: LLM Signed-off-by: Aleksei Sviridkin <[email protected]>
Most of the official actions move one or more majors, onto the Node 24 runtime the cache pins and one upload-artifact pin already used. The inputs these workflows pass are still accepted; create-github-app-token v3.1 and later deprecate app-id in favour of client-id, which only warns. checkout refuses fork code under workflow_run unless allow-unsafe-pr-checkout is set, which the fork e2e workflow already sets. backport-action v4.7 skips commits the target already has, so the comment on the backport guard no longer blames the action for an empty pick. The flux action stays on v2.8.6: its tag has to equal the Flux CLI version it installs, and that version follows the Flux release the platform runs. The breakpoint action stays on its cozystack fork tag. Assisted-by: LLM Signed-off-by: Aleksei Sviridkin <[email protected]>
Go 1.27.2 fixes vulnerabilities in net/http, its HTTP/2 transport, net/textproto and crypto/tls that govulncheck reports for every module built with 1.27.1. The golang builder images move to the 1.27.2 digests of their tags, and the go directives follow. Assisted-by: LLM Signed-off-by: Aleksei Sviridkin <[email protected]>
Refresh the base image digests and move each tag to the newest release that builds and passes the image smoke checks: Debian trixie for piraeus-server, whose zfsutils then matches the 2.4 ZFS module the Talos extension ships and whose LINSTOR runs on Java 21 instead of 17, node 24 for the dashboard console and its UI test job, Ubuntu 26.04 for the e2e sandbox, nginx-unprivileged 1.31, the dockerfile 1.28 frontend and alpine 3.24 for the cilium patch stage. Ubuntu 26.04 no longer has a qemu-kvm package, so the sandbox installs qemu-system-x86, which provides the qemu-system-x86_64 it runs. The kubevirt CSI driver stays on AlmaLinux 9: AlmaLinux 10 builds its amd64 userland for x86-64-v3, and on a tenant node whose vCPU lacks it every mkfs, blkid and mount the node service runs would exit at once. shadowbox stays on node 18 because outline-server declares engines node 18.x and npm ci refuses any other major. The bases whose versions are the upstream component itself (clickhouse, capk, vector) are not touched, nor those that upstream's build pins (the Harbor build tags, the cilium-operator builder). Assisted-by: LLM Signed-off-by: Aleksei Sviridkin <[email protected]>
The root module and api/apps/v1alpha1 move to the newest releases that build: controller-runtime v0.25.2, gateway-api v1.6.3 on the minor of the installed v1.6.1 CRDs, cel-go v0.31.0, grpc v1.84.0, etcd v3.7.2, cert-manager v1.21.2, and the golang.org/x, OpenTelemetry and Prometheus modules. api/apps/v1alpha1 joins the root module on the Kubernetes v0.37.1 libraries. Three stay behind, each for a stated reason. cel-go v0.32 moved its module path to cel.dev/cel-go, which k8s.io/apiserver does not import. The newest kube-openapi needs structured-merge-diff v7, and k8s.io/apimachinery v0.37 does not compile against it. The Flux API modules stay on the Flux v2.8 line the platform installs, so the code writes no field the installed controllers do not know. cert-manager v1.21 drops the deprecated ObjectReference alias, so the gateway controller names IssuerReference directly, and gateway-api marks SchemeGroupVersion deprecated, so a gateway test builds its GroupKind from GroupName. api/apps/v1alpha1 moves to go 1.27.2 with the other modules, so a module that imports the published types now needs Go 1.27. Assisted-by: LLM Signed-off-by: Aleksei Sviridkin <[email protected]>
kubevirt-csi-driver builds upstream csi-driver f10ae94 against Kubernetes v0.37.1, grpc v1.84.0 and csi-lib-utils v0.25. kubevirt.io/api and the CDI API stay on the releases upstream builds against, because newer CDI APIs no longer compile with it. kubeovn-webhook moves to client-go v0.37.1 and token-proxy to the latest releases of its dependencies, except jwx v4, which removes the jwk.Cache the proxy's JWKS refresh is built on. go mod tidy lowers a few indirect requirements the new graph no longer pins higher, go-openapi/swag in kubeovn-webhook among them. kubeovn-webhook keeps kube-openapi on the commit k8s.io/apimachinery v0.37.1 is built with: the newest one moves to structured-merge-diff v7, and apimachinery's managedfields package no longer compiles against it. Assisted-by: LLM Signed-off-by: Aleksei Sviridkin <[email protected]>
go fix brings the code written since the modernizers last ran onto the same idioms: any, range over int, maps.Copy, slices.Backward and slices.ContainsFunc, strings.SplitSeq, and new(value) in place of ptr.To. embedlit stays off because its syntax needs Go 1.27 and would break backports to release branches on Go 1.26; omitzero stays off because it would make metadata, spec and status required in the published OpenAPI schemas. Assisted-by: LLM Signed-off-by: Aleksei Sviridkin <[email protected]>
📝 Walkthrough
Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to The release workflow's staging-branch push may not trigger the workflows that should follow it. The published API module also unnecessarily drops support for Go 1.26 consumers. Both are small fixes that should be made before merging. Pre-merge checks |

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win
Disable persisted checkout credentials before the App-token push.
Checkout v7 persists its HTTP authorization header in a separate config file through includeIf. The later git config --unset-all http.https://github.com/.extraheader does not remove that included header. When prepare-release pushes the staging branch, the checkout’s GITHUB_TOKEN can override the App token in the remote URL. GitHub then suppresses workflows triggered by that push. Set persist-credentials: false on this checkout so the branch push uses the App token. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

💡 Result:
The **authoritative `go.mod` for `k8s.io/apimachinery v0.37.1`** is the file at that exact Git tag. It requires `golang.org/x/net v0.57.0`, `golang.org/x/text v0.40.0`, and `sigs.k8s.io/structured-merge-diff/v6 v6.4.2`—so your requested `net` and `text` versions are upgrades, while structured-merge-diff already matches. ([github.com](https://github.com/kubernetes/apimachinery/blob/v0.37.1/go.mod))
To use your requested versions in a consuming module:
```go
require (
k8s.io/apimachinery v0.37.1
golang.org/x/net v0.61.0
golang.org/x/text v0.43.0
sigs.k8s.io/structured-merge-diff/v6 v6.4.2
)
```
That is a **consumer’s dependency selection**, not the unmodified upstream `go.mod`.

Keep the public module’s Go minimum as low as its requirements allow.
The API source uses generated structs and deepcopy methods and does not require Go 1.27 language features. The upgraded dependencies require Go 1.26.0 or older. Keep the module minimum at Go 1.26.4 and use Go 1.27.2 as the build toolchain.

What this PR does
One PR instead of the open Renovate ones, and it goes further than Renovate did. Go modules, Dockerfile base images and GitHub Actions move to the newest versions that build and pass the tests. Where a newer version is known to break something, it stays behind, and
.github/renovate.jsonnow holds it with the reason in the rule description.The tests come first, in their own commits, and they pass on the old dependencies:
make go-unit-testsnow runs every Go test underpkg/andcmd/. The apiserver serializer and fuzz tests, the generated OpenAPI and applyconfiguration suites, lineage, ovnstatus and every cmd package but backport-audit never ran in CI before. None of them was red.hack/image-smoke.batschecks the tools the CSI, LINSTOR, multus, Harbor and redis-backup images get from their base images or build stages (mkfs, mount.nfs, drbd, lvm, zfs, CNI plugins, nginx and trivy under uid 10000, redis 8). Each PR build job runs it against the images it pushed; forks and the unit lane run no container.Two answers of the apps API look wrong and are pinned as they are today. Applies from different field managers never conflict, filed as #4857. Protobuf is refused with 406 even when the client offers JSON as a fallback.
The smoke checks also pin a CPU floor. The kubevirt CSI driver and its sidecars run on whatever vCPU a tenant VM gets, so they must not require an x86 ISA level above x86-64-v2. For C objects that level is in the GNU property note, for Go binaries it is the GOAMD64 setting.
The tests found two real bugs:
--cookie-refresh=1hthe chart sets did nothing. A refreshed cookie keeps the token's expiry. A session too large to encode now shows an error at sign-in and leaves the current cookie alone on refresh, where an empty cookie used to be set.What moved:
Held back, each with its reason:
The cert-manager Go module (v1.21.2) is one minor ahead of the installed chart (v1.20.2). The Certificate objects the gateway controller writes serialize the same either way, and the two line up again when the chart moves.
api/apps/v1alpha1 now requires Go 1.27, which applies to every module that imports the published types.
govulncheck before the bumps reported 12, 5, 9, 11 and 9 reachable vulnerabilities in the root module, api/apps/v1alpha1, kubevirt-csi-driver, token-proxy and kubeovn-webhook. After them it reports none in any of the five.
make generateleaves no diff.A three-node test cluster upgraded from main to this branch passed every check run against it: the cozystack API, controller and operator, the kube-ovn webhook, multus, the token proxy cookie refresh, LINSTOR on the trixie-based piraeus-server, and kubevirt CSI volumes with ext4, xfs and RWX. Restoring a LINSTOR snapshot there gave empty replicas on both main and this branch. That is #4862 and not a regression. Harbor and arm64 were not exercised on it.
Upgrade note: this PR changes the kubevirt-csi-driver image, and restarting its node plugin breaks live RWX (NFS) mounts in tenant clusters, because the plugin holds the NFS mounts in its pod's network namespace. It is an old defect, tracked in #4863.
The e2e-proxmox workflow now runs Node 24 actions, so its self-hosted runner has to be v2.327.1 or newer.
The smoke checks run only for images whose references the build changed. An image that drops out of that list, for example a renamed repository or a build that stamps no new reference, is silently not checked.
Not verified before merge: Ubuntu 26.04 as the e2e sandbox (the E2E run of this PR covers it), the Harbor images beyond the smoke checks, and the arm64 builds, which the next nightly covers.
Supersedes #3001, #3302, #3363, #3451, #3902, #4050, #4491 and #4822.

api/apps/v1alpha1module now requires Go 1.27. cozystack/terraform-provider-cozystack imports it and builds with Go 1.26, so it needs the Go bump when it next moves its pin; that is left to its maintainers, so no box is ticked.Release note
