A trailing title ends the maiden clause. Wherever a trailing rule reads the clause (no comma, the part before a suffix comma, or the given part after a family comma), the walk now reads the end of the name the way assign does: the S2 peel and the H5 title chain, run until neither takes anything more.
2.3.0 now Jane Doe nee Smith Prof.maiden Smith Prof.title Prof., maidenSmithJane Doe nee Smith MA Prof./… Prof. MAmaiden Smith MA Prof./Smith Prof. MAboth: title Prof., suffixMA, maidenSmithJane Doe nee Smith V Prof.maiden Smith V Prof.title Prof., suffixV, maidenSmithDoe, Jane nee Smith MA Prof.maiden Smith MA Prof.title Prof., suffixMA, maidenSmithOne check guards every stop. The numeral, credential and title stops each give up a run only where the name left standing reads the whole run as titles or post-nominals, and no particle chain, bound-given join or P6 attachment would absorb it. Otherwise the clause keeps the run. That is rules.md#M2's invariant, "a word the clause gives up reads as a post-nominal or the clause keeps it". Two readings follow from it:
Dr. nee Jones Smith Prof.keeps maidenJones Smith Prof., because no name word would be left.Jane van der Berg nee Smith Prof.keeps maidenSmith Prof., because the particle chain would take the title.
The first word after the marker stays for the title and credential stops.
Jane Doe nee King.keeps its maiden name, andJane Doe nee Prof. Dr.keepsProf.and gives upDr..Found and fixed on the way:
Berg, abdul nee Smith Vread givenabdul Vat 2.2/2.3; it now reads maidenSmith V.Doe, Jane nee Smith V, PhDread middleVat 2.2/2.3; it now reads maidenSmith V. A numeral ending the given part is a suffix only when no comma part follows (Issues with names in the format Last, First Middle Suffix where Suffix is I #144).Doe, Jane nee Smith MA Vnow gives upMA V, as the same words read without a clause.
Recorded as boundaries in rules.md#M2 rather than changed. The two spellings
<credential> Prof.andProf. <credential>still differ in these cases:- where the clause keeps the credential:
Doe nee Smith ba Prof.against… Prof. ba; - where something in or ahead of the clause would take the title: a particle chain, a bound-given join, a name left with no name word, or after a family comma the given part's own title chain (
Doe, Jane nee Smith Rev. MA Prof.).
The same rows record two more readings:
Jane Doe (nee Smith Prof.)gives titleProf., because bracket content ending in a period reads as bare (S1/M3).Jane Doe nee Smith King.gives titleKing., H5's acceptedMary Jane King.cost.
Verification. On three generated grids and two review populations (about 1.06 million parses), the fix adds 0 new M2 violations, apart from 12 bare-
Dr.-head twins of a reading master already gets wrong (#548). decisions.md's #535 entry carries the measurements and their recipes.Follow-up: #548 (the walk's plain suffix-word stop never asks the release question).

A title written after a maiden clause is taken into the maiden name, and it hides a credential or numeral standing in front of it.
Outside a clause a trailing title is transparent:
Jane Doe MA Prof.andJane Doe Prof. MAboth give titleProf., suffixMA. Inside one, the two spellings disagree, and only because of which word the clause meets last:Jane Doe nee Smith Prof. MAgives maidenSmith Prof., suffixMA, whileJane Doe nee Smith MA Prof.keeps all three words. An unambiguous credential already breaks the clause on its own, soJane Doe nee Smith PhD Prof.gives maidenSmith, suffixPhD, titleProf..Why now. #533 made a clause end at a trailing credential of the ambiguous class, as #424 did for a trailing numeral. Both stops read the trailing suffix run only, and the trailing-title chain is a separate reading the maiden walk has never consulted, so both share this limit. It is recorded as an accepted boundary in
rules.md#M2.The question. Should the maiden walk see a trailing title the way the rest of the library does, so the clause ends before
Prof.and whatever credential stands in front of it? The two halves are separable:Jane Doe nee Smith Prof.: is a period-marked title after a birth name a title? The maiden name keeps it, where it gives upPhDandJr.#533 andJohn van der Berg Vreads familyvan der Berg V— the particle chain and the maiden walk take a trailing numeral as a name word #424 stops would apply as they do in… Prof. MA.Against: the title chain needs a name word left standing, and the clause's words are about to leave the name, so this is the same double-check problem #424 and #533 each had to solve, a third time; and it moves #424's numeral readings, which were settled with their own measurements.
