Allow skipping auth #495

Closed

Description

@jmuk

Some API devs want to connect a testing servers which have different auth story; right now gax-nodejs codebase is troublesome for such environment, because it always attempts to obtain the auth token and invokes combineChannelCredentials.

    This is the part that throws the errors referenced in #489.

    @stephenplusplus I'm a tad confused on this one :) Is this something we do for the other APIs in any places?

    I'm not sure if it's still there, but we used to allow disabling the token-fetching stage for scenarios where a user is in an emulator. I don't think we exposed a user-accessible setting, i.e. "options.disableAuth", but rather, we were able to internally bypass the auth step when we knew it wasn't needed-- when a user provided their own options.apiEndpoint host (usually to point to their emulator) or when we detected, i.e. DATASTORE_EMULATOR_HOST or the equivalent in other languages.

    This is an old issue, I'll add the code snippet still:

    const grpc = require('@grpc/grpc-js');

    const sslCreds = grpc.credentials.createInsecure();
    const client = new Client({sslCreds, grpc});
