Bring back author colors #3731

Description

@max-nextcloud

Author colors were removed during the yjs rework.
Bring them back.

Approaches:

  • Either use awareness state and have each user announce their author colors and a list of segments they wrote similar to how the user cursor plugin works
  • Or use a separate datastructure within the yjs document to maintain a list of authorship

    Hello,

    I was directed here from nextcloud/notes#758 (comment) .

    I would like to pitch in and say that this feature would be very useful and help to make the usage of etherpad obsolete.

    @eisfuchs-de

    Authorship colors are extremely useful when doing collaborative writing in real time, so you see immediately what is new and you can concentrate on these changes. This would allow the transition from Etherpad to Nextcloud for teams that rely on this kind of workflow.

    @Orgasmscience

    I can only second this, can we please bring this feature back? It's essential for collaborative editing over a longer period of time, where you just want to have an instant overview of changes without scrolling through the history.

    @Treyfane

    It would be so great to finally be able to send etherpad into oblivion if this would work (again)

    @Corborax

    Please bring back the author colors! That would make collaborative writing more efficient... and more fun again! :)

    There's quite a lot of work happening these days in yjs and prosemirror (also thanks to the folks from blocknote) that will eventually make this possible: https://fosdem.org/2026/schedule/event/8VKQXR-blocknote-yjs-prosemirror/
    But it will require yjs 14 and a new version of y-prosemirror - which are still in rc / alpha state right now.
