Updating plugins fails #66

Description

@wpbullet

What happened?

User: "update the plugins that need to be updated"
Agent: "Plugin activation failed: Could not determine which plugin to activate. Please specify the plugin name, e.g., "activate hello dolly"."

Thinking

Okay, the user is asking to "update the plugins that need to be updated." Let me look at the history to understand the context.

Earlier, the user asked to "list plugins that need to be updated," and the assistant provided a list of inactive plugins. Then the user responded with "update the plugins that need to be updated," which seems like they want to activate or update those plugins.

But wait, the plugins listed were inactive. Updating them would mean activating them. However, in WordPress, plugins can be activated or deactivated. If the user wants to activate them, they would need to go through the WordPress admin interface. But since the assistant is supposed to handle the tools, maybe there's a tool available for that.

Looking at the tools provided: there's wp-agentic-admin/plugin-activate, which activates a plugin by name or slug. The user might want to activate all the listed plugins. However, the assistant can't activate multiple plugins at once. Each tool call would need to handle one plugin at a time.

But the user is asking to "update" all these plugins. Since the assistant can only make one tool call per response, maybe the user expects the assistant to activate all of them in a single step. However, the tools don't support batch operations. So the assistant would need to process each plugin individually.

Wait, but the user might not know that and just wants the assistant to act. The assistant's task is to call the appropriate tool. The user's request is to "update" the plugins, which would involve activating them. The assistant has the tool to activate plugins, so it needs to call that tool for each plugin in the list.

But the assistant can only make one tool call per response. So, if the user has multiple plugins, the assistant would need to process each one. However, in this case, the user might be expecting the assistant to handle all plugins at once, but the tools don't support that. Therefore, the assistant should proceed step by step.

But looking at the previous interaction, the assistant listed the plugins and then the user said "update the plugins that need to be updated," which might be a continuation of the same action. However, the assistant needs to call the tool for each plugin. Since the user might not know that, the assistant should proceed to call the plugin-activate tool for each plugin in the list.

But the assistant can only make one tool call per response. So, if the user has multiple plugins, the assistant would need to handle each one in separate steps. However, in this case, the user might be expecting the assistant to activate all of them, but the tool can't do that. Therefore, the assistant should proceed to call the tool for each plugin in the list, one by one.

But given the current setup, the assistant would need to process each plugin. However, the user might not have the capability to do that manually. Therefore, the assistant should call the plugin-activate tool for each plugin in the list, but since the assistant can only make one tool call per response, it would have to do it in steps.

But in the current context, the assistant has already listed the plugins, and the user is asking to update them. Therefore, the assistant should call the plugin-activate tool for each plugin in the list. However, the assistant can't do that in one response. So, the assistant would need to make multiple tool calls, each for a different plugin.

But given the constraints, the assistant must proceed. So, the assistant would call the plugin-activate tool for each plugin in the list. However, since the user might not know that, the assistant should proceed to do so.

Therefore, the correct action is to call the plugin-activate tool for each plugin in the list. However, the assistant can only make one tool call per response. So, in this case, the assistant would need to process each plugin step by step.

The Agent is able to list the plugins that need to be updated:
User: list plugins that need to be updated
Agent: "The following plugins are inactive and need to be updated: Adminer, AffiliateWP, AffiliateWP - Affiliate Dashboard Sharing, AffiliateWP - Checkout Referrals, AffiliateWP - Direct Link Tracking, AffiliateWP - Lifetime Commissions, AffiliateWP - PayPal Payouts, AffiliateWP - Recurring Referrals, AffiliateWP - Tiered Rates, Akismet Anti-spam: Spam Protection, All-In-One Security (AIOS)."

What did you expect?

Agent will prompt to update the plugins and execute the update, return any errors (in case of a premium plugin that has an expired or invalid license)

Console errors (if any)

Closing as no-longer-reproducible: the original repro ("update the plugins that need to be updated" → "Plugin activation failed") relied on tool-routing that has since changed. The agent now routes plugin updates to update-check first, then plugin-install for individual updates. If the bug recurs in v0.11, file a fresh issue with the failing prompt + agent trace.
