Upcoming Portage Trail Group Program and Discussion Meetings

The second Tuesday of each month, at 7 pm, we host a zoom meeting.
You are welcome to join an ENVIRONMENTAL DISCUSSION.
We get together on zoom, . . . and talk about the environment.   It’s worth it!
The third Tuesday of most months, we host a PROGRAM MEETING.
Most program meetings begin at 7 pm (but not picnics or EV shows)
Since covid, most of these program meetings have been available on Zoom.
In the last two years, some of these meetings have been in person.
Some meetings are “hybrid” – both in person and online.
Our July picnic and our September electric vehicle show each start at 6 pm,
        and are in person only.
We have traditionally NOT had a program meeting in December.
So please, stay tuned, . . . and join in.

Election Message

We environmentalists are generally discouraged and depressed at most of the recent election results in Ohio.   Some of us are having trouble sleeping.  We feel that we do not belong in Ohio or in the USA.  We’re having trouble motivating ourselves at times.

Here are some of my thoughts about the next 4 years and beyond:

We lost this election.  The earth IS in more peril, and at risk of going over more tipping points that could lead to the destruction of human life on earth.

As a Christian pastor, I know that some people say that God will never let humans destroy human life on earth.   I don’t read the Bible that way.   So, we need to keep talking honestly and sincerely about the dangers we see.   More about that another day.

As our national Sierra Club president Ben Jealous said Wednesday November 6, “Get out on the trails.  Get out on the water.”   In other words, keep your sanity by enjoying and exploring the earth.

The new president elect says he has mandates.   I agree with David Sassoon, founder & publisher of “Inside Climate News” that it’s unlikely that Americans wanted to give “him a mandate to speed up the destruction of the natural world.”   In other words, many people who voted against the environment didn’t mean to do that!!!

So . . . . we need to keep talking sincerely and honestly — especially to people on the other side, or in the middle — about the dangers we see.   I hope to do that more here, perhaps at least weekly.

I’ll appreciate your sincere responses.  I do NOT appreciate false campaign “talking points” on any side of an issue.   I realize that those words are the only words some people use these days, but I’d like to stay away from them, for either “side.”

Thanks for all you do to “enjoy, explore and protect the earth.”

That’s the motto of the Sierra Club.

Dick Beck   2024 chair, Portage Trail Group of the Sierra Club
