Last reviewed on September 21, 2026

The Query Loop block in the WordPress editor is used to display blog posts (or other content types such as pages, testimonials, or projects) on your website in different visual layouts. This guide will show you how to control which content is displayed in the Query Loop block.

Adjust the criteria of the Query Loop

In the Query Loop block settings, you can control which posts (or pages, projects, or other content types) the block shows, and in what order.

  1. In your site’s dashboard, navigate to Appearance → Editor.
  2. Select the template you want to edit, or click on the site preview to edit the homepage.
  3. Open List View and select the Query Loop block.
  4. View the block settings in the right sidebar. If you do not see the sidebar, click the Settings button in the top-right corner. This button looks like a square with two uneven columns:

Click the Settings button to open the block settings
  1. Change the “Query type” to Custom to start adjusting how the block displays your posts.
    • Note: If you have added the Query Loop to a regular page or post (and not a template), you will not see the toggle for Query type. The following settings appear by default.
  2. Choose from the following settings:
    • Post type: Select the type of content to display, choosing from posts, pages, testimonials, or projects. Plugins can add other types of content here, such as products via WooCommerce.
    • Order by: Organize content by date or alphabetically.
    • Sticky posts: Choose what happens with sticky posts:
      • Include: The block includes sticky posts in the list.
      • Exclude: The block leaves sticky posts out of the list.
      • Ignore: The block includes sticky posts but does not treat them as sticky.
      • Show only: The block shows sticky posts and nothing else.
  3. Choose from the following display settings (if any option is missing, click the three dots (⋮) next to the Display settings label and select the setting from the menu):
    • Items per page: Choose how many posts the block shows on the page, up to a maximum of 100 posts per page. Use this setting to increase or decrease the number of posts on the page.
    • Offset: Begin from the first post (0) or skip the first X number of posts.
    • Max pages to show: If the block uses pagination, this option sets the maximum number of pages a visitor can view in total.
  4. Use the Filters section to narrow down the content using specific criteria (if any option is missing, click the three dots (⋮) next to the Filters settings label and select the setting from the menu):
    • Taxonomies (i.e., show or hide posts based on categories and tags)
    • Authors
    • Search terms (i.e., show posts whose content, title, or excerpt contains the keywords you enter)
    • Plugins may add more filters (such as product categories via WooCommerce).
  5. Click the Save button to save your changes.

Exclude the current post

Exclude the current post to keep the post a visitor is viewing out of a Query Loop block‘s results. This is useful on a single post template, where a list of recent or related posts should not repeat the post already on the screen.

The Exclude current filter appears only when all of the following are true:

  • The Query Loop block is on a template that displays a single post or page, such as the Single Posts template, or you are editing an individual post or page. The filter does not appear on templates that list several posts, such as the Index or archive templates.
  • The block’s Post type matches the content the template displays. For example, the Query Loop block shows posts on a post template.

To exclude the current post, follow these steps:

  1. In your site’s dashboard, navigate to Appearance → Editor.
  2. Select the template that displays a single post or page, such as the Single Posts template.
  3. Open List View and select the Query Loop block.
  4. In the block settings, set the “Query type” to Custom.
  5. Find the Filters section. If you do not see the Exclude current filter, click the three dots (⋮) next to the Filters label and select Exclude from the menu:
The filters are shown, with Exclude enabled, and the Exclude current toggle in the on position.
  1. Turn on the “Exclude current” toggle. The Query Loop block will now leave out the current post from its results on that template.
  2. Click Save to save your changes.
