My heart just breaks as his kindness and care really impacted my life. That's what I remember - not all of his amazing success in business and on stage. I read every tribute for all of my friends. They all led with the same things: kindness, presence, and the way these people loved the humans around them. No one was remembered for a title or a deal. It changed how I want to spend my time. Don't delay. Build the legacy now, in the small things. What matters is family, friends, and the kindness you leave behind.

I reached out to a diverse group of leaders to offer some wisdom on how to meet this challenge head-on. Jill Hernstat, CEO of recruiting firm Hernstat & Company offers this masterclass of advice for #RecentGrads and #EarlyCareer professionals. “One of the first things recent graduates should do is build a strong LinkedIn profile. Think about the companies where you’d like to work, follow them, and stay informed about their news, hiring activity, and industry trends. Networking is critical. Reach out to people you know and don’t be afraid to ask for advice, introductions, or referrals. Leverage your college alumni network, as fellow alumni are often willing to help with introductions and recommendations to hiring managers. Be open-minded about your first role. It may not be your dream job, but it can provide valuable experience, help you develop new skills, expand your network, and open doors to future opportunities. It’s also important to become knowledgeable about artificial intelligence. Take courses, stay current on new AI tools, and learn how AI can improve productivity and decision-making. What happened next we didn't see coming: it went viral, our store filled up with customers wanting to drink it, and somewhere along the way it became the most iconic pumpkin spice latte in San Francisco — maybe in the world 🌎 We're already getting calls asking if it's coming back this year. It is. The PSL in a pumpkin returns this October. 🎃

Over a decade later, I'm leaving with a deep appreciation for the career path I was able to craft. I developed my skills alongside the company with some of the best people in the business, establishing people practices and policies that always centered our employees at the core. They say you don't leave companies, you leave managers, and it's a testament to the amazing managers and mentorship I've had at Mission North that I stayed for over a decade (thank you Shannon Osthimer and Gillian Davis for everything!). And thanks to Jesse S., Ilana Hernandez, Brooke Mendonca and Laura Sweet for making Mission North and our Ops team a well-oiled (and fun!) machine- they are hiring!! In the last year, I: ✨ Started as a contractor at Intuit, then converted to FTE in record time (5 months). ✨ Shifted from tech product comms to financial corporate comms, leading earnings, M&A comms, and last week, my first Investor Day. 💪 ✨ Spent a lot of time leveling up my AI craft, with huge thanks to Gab Ferree and the Off the Record community. ✨ On top of all that, I renovated a home and moved back to California. 👋🏾 San Diego friends, let’s reconnect! It's been a big year for me and for the software industry, which has certainly kept the job interesting! I'm grateful to work with a team that reads this market well and pivots fast.
