Summary

  • recover active ACP turns automatically when the provider runtime disconnects
  • remove the ACP SDK notification queue overflow that terminated long-running sessions
  • make provider execution and live model discovery use one catalog-owned strategy across all 26 built-in providers
  • expose recovery state through storage, HTTP/OpenAPI, generated SDKs, hooks, native tools, the web session UI, and the official Compozy skill

Root cause

The failed beta.19 session (sess-4f738615dd76b8a6) exhausted the upstream ACP SDK's fixed queue of 1,024 notifications. The SDK closed the connection, the provider process later exited successfully, and Compozy persisted overlapping terminal failures. Because the runtime generation was not recoverable, the only available action was to fork the transcript into a new session.

Implementation

Lossless prompt delivery

  • pin the Compozy ACP SDK fork, which applies blocking backpressure instead of closing the connection when notification consumers fall behind
  • persist prompt output before fan-out and batch adjacent prompt chunks
  • keep slow SSE/UI consumers outside the provider execution path

Automatic runtime recovery

  • fence each runtime generation so stale process exits cannot finalize a replacement runtime
  • rebuild or reload the ACP session and replay the interrupted turn
  • retry at 1s, 2s, and 4s, then emit one canonical exhausted failure
  • persist recovery phase, attempt, generation, reason, and timestamps
  • suppress the duplicate raw provider error when the canonical transcript marker owns the terminal failure

Provider-neutral execution

  • classify every built-in provider as direct_acp, native_cli_bridge, or harness_adapter
  • reserve the native CLI bridge for Claude Code and Codex, the two adapter-wrapped CLIs
  • keep direct ACP providers and all Pi-harness providers on their native paths, including Gemini, OpenCode, Goose, Hermes, OpenClaw, Cursor, Copilot, Kiro, Qwen, Kimi, and the remaining built-ins
  • reuse the same strategy for session startup and live model discovery
  • cover the exact 26-provider catalog in the canonical provider execution suite

The design follows the ACP ownership and reconnect patterns inspected in .resources/acpx, .resources/orca, .resources/synara, and .resources/open-design rather than adding provider-specific recovery branches.

Public surfaces

  • add recovery lifecycle hooks and introspection contracts
  • add runtime recovery fields to session storage and migration 00082
  • add native-tool session reads for the recovery state
  • regenerate OpenAPI, Go contracts, and TypeScript contracts
  • show recovery progress in the session UI and project exhausted failures as one transcript error
  • update the official Compozy skill and session/provider documentation

Verification

Focused local checks passed:

  • go test -race ./internal/providerexec -count=1
  • go test -race ./internal/session -count=1
  • focused ACP, hooks, extension, daemon, native-tool, model-catalog, store, and API suites
  • bunx turbo run typecheck --filter=compozy-web
  • focused web transcript and session-window suites
  • monorepo Bun lint and the codegen, installer, product-language, and source-size lanes reached by the local gate
  • git diff --check

The full make gate-full run is intentionally delegated to CI for this PR.

Real-scenario QA

  • recoverable disconnect: the same turn moved from partial output through recovery to completion on runtime generation 2
  • repeated disconnect: three bounded replacements were attempted, followed by one exhausted failure, one provider-failure marker, and one stopped event
  • web reload: history rendered one canonical failure instead of duplicate errors
  • fork: the failed transcript produced a child session with the expected parent and spawn depth
  • isolated QA teardown completed with clean: true and no surviving processes

Report: docs/qa/reports/2026-08-22-acp-runtime-recovery.md

Compozy Impact Audit

  • Native tools: session read output now includes runtime recovery state; descriptors, generated catalog fixture, availability tests, and daemon native-tool tests were updated. Existing tool IDs and capability gates remain unchanged.
  • Extensibility and hooks: adds started, succeeded, and exhausted recovery hook events; updates introspection, extension contracts, generated SDKs, official skill references, provider execution registry, and ACP bridge behavior. No new config.toml key is introduced; retry policy is a runtime invariant.
  • Workspace data isolation: recovery data is session-scoped and stored/read through the existing workspace-filtered session repository, HTTP/SSE, native-tool, and transcript paths. Tests exercise conversion, storage, event delivery, and session reads without introducing a global cache.
  • Official Compozy skill: runtime operations and native-tool references document automatic recovery and the new observable session fields.

Risk notes

  • replaying an interrupted turn can repeat provider-side work if the provider completed an external side effect immediately before disconnecting; recovery remains bounded and is surfaced through durable events
  • the ACP SDK fork is pinned to v0.13.5-compozy.2 until the backpressure behavior is available upstream

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Sessions can automatically recover from temporary runtime or provider failures while preserving partial output.
    • Session status and events now show recovery progress, attempts, generations, and outcomes.
    • Added recovery lifecycle notifications for integrations and extensions.
    • Improved live model discovery for ACP-based providers and native CLI environments.
    • Prompt output delivery is more reliable during high-volume event bursts.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved failure classification for disconnected providers.
    • Prevented duplicate provider errors from appearing in transcripts.
    • Recovering sessions no longer show inappropriate dead-session actions.

Walkthrough

This change adds automatic prompt recovery, durable runtime recovery state, ACP model discovery, recovery lifecycle hooks, prompt event delivery, session tool schemas, and web recovery presentation. It also updates persistence, transcript filtering, native CLI resolution, and related tests.

Changes

Runtime recovery and persistence

Layer / File(s) Summary
Runtime recovery state and prompt execution
internal/session/..., internal/acp/...
Prompts retry recoverable process and transport failures. Recovery restarts the runtime, replays the original turn, persists lifecycle state, and stops after configured attempts. Durable prompt delivery streams persisted output and catches up through recorder queries.
Durable runtime state and storage
internal/store/..., internal/api/..., internal/session/...
Sessions persist runtime generation and recovery metadata. Validation, cloning, database scanning, updates, session projections, and API conversion expose the state.
Recovery hooks and daemon integration
internal/hooks/..., internal/daemon/..., internal/extension/...
Started, succeeded, and exhausted recovery events use typed payloads and asynchronous session hook dispatch. Daemon wiring forwards the events to the runtime notifier.
ACP provider discovery and native CLI resolution
internal/providerexec/..., internal/modelcatalog/..., internal/session/...
Providers use generic ACP model discovery. Native CLI bridges are classified and resolved. ACP notification overflow blocks instead of using the default queue behavior.
Session tools and web presentation
internal/tools/..., web/src/systems/session/..., web/src/systems/os/apps/session/...
Session schemas expose recovery fields and lifecycle events. Recovering sessions display attempt progress. Provider-failure markers suppress duplicate transcript errors.

29-40: 🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Account for non-text payloads in the byte cap.

Retain text-only eligibility, or include every retained event payload in totalBytes before appending it.

191-215: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Apply resume replay only once.

dispatchMessage already contains replayBlock at line 192. Line 215 adds the same block again before driver.Prompt, so the provider receives two replay blocks. Remove one wrapping call and assert that a non-empty request contains one resumeReplayOpenTag.
