Problem

User report (desktop v0.3.0, 2026-10-06):

  • In the composer model picker, the Claude Code group showed only the seeded models (Opus 5, Fable 5, Sonnet 5, Opus 4.8, Haiku 4.5). Opus 5.5 (claude-opus-5-5) and Sonnet 5.5 (claude-sonnet-5-5) were missing even though the installed Claude Code already offers them.
  • The picker showed "Model catalog may be out of date."
  • Clicking the picker's refresh button changed nothing: the list and the warning both stayed.
  • The Codex group also looked stale (GPT-5.6 only, while GPT-6.1-Sol was the selected model).

The goal of #498/#633/#658 was that catalogs follow provider releases with no code change or new release. That wasn't happening for Claude.

Reproduction (live daemon on the reporter's machine, read-only)

Probe Result
compozy provider models list claude --all --include-stale -o json live rows opus "Opus 5.5", sonnet "Sonnet 5.5", fable "Fable 5.1" exist, but curated = false. Curated = the 5 builtin seeds only. claude-opus-5-5 exists only as a models_dev row with available: null.
model_catalog_transport_bindings (provider claude) adapter option list: default, opus (Opus 5.5), fable (Fable 5.1), sonnet (Sonnet 5.5), haiku (Haiku 4.5), claude-sonnet-5, claude-opus-5, claude-fable-5, claude-opus-4-8, -4-7, -4-6, claude-sonnet-4-6. New releases are advertised only as version aliases.
model_catalog_sources provider_live:claude refresh_state=failed, stale=1: acp: inspect model "claude-sonnet-4-6": ... session/set_config_option ...: context deadline exceeded. Daemon log earlier the same day: inspect model "claude-fable-5-1[1m]": ... Couldn't confirm model "claude-fable-5-1[1m]" with the API.
compozy provider models refresh claude --source provider_live:claude (unforced) returned in 30 ms with the cached failed row and changed nothing
same with --force 8.6 s against a 10 s budget; succeeded this time, so the source flaps on timing
direct acp.InspectSessionModels against npx @agentclientprotocol/claude-agent-acp@latest whole inspection failed after 6.7 s because one model (claude-fable-5-1[1m]) was rejected by the API

Root cause

Three defects together, each with evidence:

  1. One rejected or slow per-model probe threw away the whole ACP model list. internal/acp/session_inspection.go (InspectSessionModels) calls session/set_config_option for each advertised model to read its reasoning options (fix: discover Claude reasoning options for each exact model #658), and it returned an error on the first failure. That error failed provider_live:claude, and recordSourceFailure (internal/modelcatalog/service_refresh.go) then re-persisted the previous rows as stale. That stale state is what drives the picker warning (web/src/systems/session/components/session-prompt-runtime-selector.tsx:21). The probe loop runs about 12 sequential round trips inside the 10 s live-discovery budget, so it times out intermittently. A provider-side rejection ("Couldn't confirm model … with the API") makes it fail every time.
  2. New Claude releases never got an exact identity or a curated slot.
    • claudeLogicalModelID (internal/modelcatalog/claude_model_rows.go) resolves an alias only against the configured/builtin curated seeds. opus labelled "Opus 5.5" matched no seed (claude-opus-5 has version [5]), so the row stayed opus.
    • parseClaudeModelRows never set ExplicitlyCurated, unlike the Codex live rows (live_sources_codex.go:191). applyCatalogView (curation.go) therefore restricted Claude's browse view to the hardcoded builtinClaudeModelsConfig() (internal/config/provider_reasoning.go:106). A Claude release could only show up in the composer after someone edited that seed list and shipped a new version.
  3. The picker refresh was a silent no-op. useRuntimeModelCatalog.refresh called refreshMutation.mutate(), which posts {}. refreshSource (service_refresh.go:221) skips any source whose next_refresh_at is still in the future, and sourceHasFreshStatus (:426-428) counts failed sources as fresh. The click came back 200 with the cached failure: no error, no change. The settings-page refresh already sends force: true (provider-model-catalog-status.tsx:64); the composer did not.

Codex: in the reporter's profile context, Codex live discovery is healthy right now (gpt-6.1-sol, gpt-6-*, gpt-5.6-* are all curated). Its live rows are already curated. I could not reproduce a stale Codex list after the fact. The likely trigger is the composer refresh no-op (3) while that context's Codex live rows were missing or stale, for example right after the config edit that changed the execution-context fingerprint. Fixing (3) covers it.

Fix

internal/acp — inspection contract

  • InspectSessionModels treats per-model option probes as enrichment. If a model's selection is rejected or unconfirmed, the error goes into the new SessionModelInspection.ModelErrors map and probing continues. If the context budget runs out, probing stops and the advertised Options are returned. Models still contains only acknowledged models, so a model never inherits another model's options.

internal/modelcatalog — Claude live rows

  • claudeAliasReleaseID: when an alias matches no configured seed, it takes the exact release id from the provider's own label (opus + "Opus 5.5" → claude-opus-5-5, fable + "Fable 5.1" → claude-fable-5-1). The family in the label must agree with the alias. Labels without a version keep the alias, and ambiguous seed matches keep the old behaviour. The transport binding stays opus, so launch still sends what the adapter advertises. The exact id also merges with the models_dev row for pricing and context window.
  • The advertised list is Claude Code's own /model picker, so it now owns curation: every advertised row except the default pointer gets ExplicitlyCurated. Version aliases are Featured (the provider's current models lead the list). Pinned exact releases get explicit Featured=false. Config-source curation (priority 120) still overrides the live source (110), so user choices win.

web/ — composer refresh

  • useRuntimeModelCatalog.refresh sends { force: true }. A click now re-runs discovery and invalidates modelCatalogKeys.all. If it fails, the existing refreshError path shows the daemon error in the picker instead of doing nothing. The one-time initial readiness refresh stays unforced.

No static model list was edited or removed. The builtin seeds remain as offline metadata and defaults, but live discovery now governs what the picker shows.

Reference research

None of the .resources repos needed: the root cause was local and the evidence is above. The Codex live adapter (live_sources_codex.go) already uses the curation model applied here, with provider-advertised rows marked ExplicitlyCurated and the provider's own default/featured signal.

Compatibility (SD-013)

  • User state: no SQLite shape change. Persisted live rows are replaced on the next successful refresh, as with any discovery change. A session or agent that saved the bare alias opus still launches: resolveClaudeCatalogBinding falls through to the raw transport value for ids that are not builtin-seeded.
  • Public surfaces: HTTP/UDS routes, DTOs, CLI flags/output shape, compozy__provider_models_* tools, hooks, config keys and extension SDKs are unchanged. The values change for Claude: new curated rows and alias rows renamed to exact ids, which is the intended behaviour.
  • Internal: acp.SessionModelInspection gains ModelErrors; its only consumer is modelcatalog.

Tests

Invariant Owning suite Change
Discovery keeps the advertised model list when one model's selection is unacknowledged; only acknowledged models publish options internal/acp TestInspectSessionModels Replaced "Should fail discovery when a model selection is not acknowledged". That assertion encoded the all-or-nothing behaviour that causes this bug (see root cause 1); the "no foreign options" part of it is still asserted.
Discovery returns the advertised list when the probe budget runs out same new subtest (stall_config helper scenario)
A Claude release advertised only as an alias is curated under its exact release id, aliases featured, pinned releases curated but not featured, default not curated internal/modelcatalog TestLiveProviderSources (service-level curated view, builtin + live sources) new subtest; fails on the old parser with featured = [claude-fable-5 claude-opus-5]
A rejected per-model probe does not fail the Claude live source; probed models keep efforts and unprobed ones get none invented same new subtest; fails on the old parser
Composer refresh forces rediscovery and rereads the catalog web use-runtime-model-catalog.test.ts new test (asserts refreshAllModels({ force: true }))
A failed composer refresh surfaces its error same new test

Focused checks run

  • CGO_ENABLED=1 go test -race -count=1 ./internal/acp/ ./internal/modelcatalog/: 656 passed
  • go test ./internal/session/ ./internal/api/core/ ./internal/cli/ -run 'Model|Claude|Catalog|Runtime': 312 passed
  • go test ./internal/daemon/ ./internal/session/ -run 'Claude|ModelCatalog|Catalog': 128 passed
  • go vet ./internal/acp/ ./internal/modelcatalog/: clean
  • vitest use-runtime-model-catalog.test.ts: 8/8
  • tsc --noEmit (web): clean. oxlint --deny-warnings src/systems/model-catalog: clean. oxfmt --check: clean.
  • Test-shape checker: live_sources_test.go OK. In client_start_contract_test.go it flags only pre-existing tests I did not touch.
  • Real run against the installed claude-agent-acp, in the same environment that previously failed the whole listing: completed in 3.8 s with claude-opus-5-5 "Opus 5.5" (binding opus), claude-sonnet-5-5 "Sonnet 5.5" (sonnet), claude-fable-5-1, and claude-haiku-4-5-20251001 (haiku), all curated with reasoning efforts; default was not curated. The temporary harness was deleted.

Left to CI

  • golangci-lint: the local v2 binary was built with Go 1.26 and refuses this repo's Go 1.27.1 target, so lint was not run locally.
  • Full gate, full Go/Vitest suites and E2E.

QA scenarios touched

  • docs/qa/scenarios/MS-live-model-release-refresh.md: the expected outcome now covers alias releases, probe-failure tolerance and the forced composer refresh. Retest is set to pending and the walk steps are written out.
  • Cross-surface impact: docs/_memory/change-impact.md → "Live model catalog freshness — 2026-10-06".

Risks / follow-ups

  • If the probe budget runs out, the tail models get no reasoning options until the next successful refresh. The model list itself stays fresh. A follow-up could give ACP discovery its own budget, separate from the models.dev HTTP timeout it currently shares (internal/daemon/model_catalog.go:352).
  • Builtin Claude seeds the adapter no longer advertises stay curated, through the builtin source. Retiring them from the browse view when live discovery drops them is a separate decision.
  • Reasoning effort is now probed per model, so a provider that rejects every per-model selection publishes rows with unknown reasoning instead of failing.
  • An unobserved row that later goes stale (whole-source failure) falls back to the seed profile, as before this PR. The unknown-reasoning rule covers fresh rows only, so stale HTTP/command live rows keep their existing merge.

Review follow-up (Codex review, 2 × P2)

Fixed in fc5475b00.

  1. Failed probes published static seed reasoning as known.
    • InspectSessionModels now also records models it skipped once the budget ran out in ModelErrors.
    • listACP marks a row whose preferred transport has no option snapshot and has a ModelErrors entry. The row gets last_error = "model catalog: model options unavailable: …"; this column already exists, so there is no schema change.
    • explicitReasoningProfileRow / explicitDefaultReasoningEffort (reasoning_merge.go) treat such a fresh live row as the authoritative profile. The merged model is reported with ReasoningKnown=false, no efforts and no default instead of the builtin seed levels, and the row carries the probe-failure provenance.
    • Coverage: the owning TestLiveProviderSources subtest now goes through the service merge with NewBuiltinSource() and the daemon's ReasoningApply{claude: true}, using a seeded model (claude-sonnet-5, deadline) and an unseeded one (rejected). Without the merge fix it fails with known true efforts [low medium high xhigh max], the reviewer's reproduction. The TestInspectSessionModels budget subtest now asserts a DeadlineExceeded entry for every unobserved model.
  2. A forced refresh returned 200 with a failed live source and the UI hid it.
    • useRuntimeModelCatalog reads the refresh response's sources. When a signed-in provider allowed on that surface has a failed source, it sets refreshError to Couldn't refresh <provider> models: <last_error>. Partial results and cache invalidation are unchanged, and failures from providers outside the allow-list or needing sign-in are ignored.
    • Coverage: a new case in the existing use-runtime-model-catalog.test.ts suite returns a resolved 200 payload containing a failed provider_live:claude plus an out-of-scope failed openrouter. It does not rely on a rejected promise.

Checks after the follow-up:

  • CGO_ENABLED=1 go test -race ./internal/acp/ ./internal/modelcatalog/: 656 passed
  • go test ./internal/session/ ./internal/api/core/ ./internal/daemon/ -run 'Model|Claude|Catalog|Runtime|Reasoning': 546 passed
  • go vet: clean
  • vitest src/systems/model-catalog: 63/63
  • web tsc --noEmit and oxlint --deny-warnings: clean
  • The QA scenario and change-impact note are updated to match.

PR #701 review

Verdict: changes requested — 2 blocking findings (P2).

Reviewed branch fix-model-catalog-live, local and remote head 57a5fe030b9fd49fb5e31556751187eb97001717, using the complete main...HEAD diff and /tmp/herdr-packets/p1.md as the acceptance contract. No repository code or tests were edited.

Findings

P2 — Failed option probes can publish static reasoning levels as verified capabilities

Location: internal/acp/session_inspection.go:53-58 (also the budget-exhaustion return at lines 49–50).

Returning success with advertised models but missing entries in inspection.Models is reasonable for model-list availability. However, the downstream merge does not represent those omissions as unknown capabilities: applyACPModelReasoning returns without a profile, and explicitReasoningProfileRow in internal/modelcatalog/reasoning_merge.go falls through to the builtin seed. ModelErrors is never consumed by the catalog. For seeded models, a failed or timed-out probe therefore produces a fresh model with ReasoningKnown=true and static effort options, rather than the claimed absence of invented options. A partial successful refresh can replace a previously verified capability snapshot with these seed values. Users can then select an effort the installed runtime did not advertise, with no stale/error indication.

Reproduction: A review-only Go overlay supplied advertised claude-sonnet-5, a failed selection in ModelErrors, and no acknowledged model options; the actual live parser plus builtin-source merge returned:

failed probe: stale=false known=true efforts=[low medium high xhigh max]

The new failure test uses an unseeded model and checks raw source rows, so it misses this merged, user-visible result.

Suggested fix: Carry the distinction between successful capability observation and failed/unattempted enrichment into the effective-profile merge. Keep the discovered model list, but expose unknown/degraded capabilities or retain a previous verified per-model snapshot with truthful provenance; do not fill failed probes from static effort seeds. Cover the invariant in the existing catalog service/merge suite with a seeded model and a partial inspection failure.

P2 — Forced refresh still silently succeeds when a live source has no cached rows

Location: web/src/systems/model-catalog/hooks/use-runtime-model-catalog.ts:99 and :110-114.

force: true fixes TTL skipping, but is insufficient for the packet's requirement that discovery failures be visible. On a fresh profile/catalog context, let Claude initialization fail before producing any rows while the builtin source succeeds. refreshAllProviders (internal/modelcatalog/service_refresh.go:153-175) records the failed source but returns a nil aggregate error because another source succeeded and there are no stale fallback rows. The HTTP handler consequently returns 200 with a failed entry in sources. refreshAllModels accepts that response and the hook only checks refreshMutation.error, leaving refreshError null. The builtin rows also make missingAllowedProvider false and need not be stale. Clicking refresh leaves the seed list unchanged without explaining the live-discovery failure.

This is an existing aggregate-response behavior left unhandled by the proposed end-to-end refresh fix, rather than a new service regression. The new Web failure test mocks a rejected promise, bypassing the actual successful HTTP response containing a failed source.

Reproduction: The actual CatalogService.Refresh(Force: true) with NewBuiltinSource() and a failing provider_live:claude in an empty store returned:

aggregate refresh error=<nil>; live state=failed rows=0 last_error=ACP initialization failed

Suggested fix: Interpret failed source statuses in the refresh result and display the relevant source error while preserving partial results and invalidation, or make the explicit-refresh boundary return an appropriate partial-failure error. Add a case to the existing Web refresh suite for HTTP 200 with a failed live source; do not rely solely on mocked promise rejection.

Checks performed

  • Read the PR body, complete diff, root/internal/web/packages-ui instructions, relevant catalog/session consumers, SD-013, and source-refresh/error propagation.
  • go test ./internal/acp/ ./internal/modelcatalog/ -run 'TestInspectSessionModels|TestLiveProviderSources' -count=1 — passed.
  • bunx turbo run test --filter=./web --only -- src/systems/model-catalog/hooks/__tests__/use-runtime-model-catalog.test.ts src/systems/model-catalog/hooks/__tests__/use-refresh-all-models.test.ts src/systems/model-catalog/adapters/__tests__/model-catalog-api.test.ts — 3 files, 18 tests passed.
  • go test ./internal/modelcatalog/ ./internal/session/ ./internal/api/core/ -run 'TestCatalogService|Claude|ModelCatalog|ProviderModel' -count=1 — catalog and API checks passed; the session package reported no tests to run, so this is not session runtime validation.
  • go test -overlay /tmp/herdr-packets/review-701-overlay.json ./internal/modelcatalog/ -run '^TestReview701' -v -count=1 — both diagnostic reproductions passed by asserting the problematic current outputs above. The temporary overlay extends the existing suite only in the compiler input; repository files are unchanged. It reuses existing source I/O fakes and the actual parser/merge/service implementations.
  • git diff --check main...HEAD — passed.
  • Changed production files are 116, 251, and 116 lines, all below 500.
  • Working tree remained clean; local and remote PR heads were rechecked and still matched the reviewed SHA.

Scope and limitations

The alias-to-release mapping and forced refresh have focused passing coverage. No schema or public DTO shape changes were found; raw persisted aliases still have the existing launch fallback. The two findings above prevent accepting the claimed complete failure/capability behavior. The QA scenario is explicitly marked retest pending; this review did not execute a real daemon/browser scenario. No gate, gate-full, E2E, push, or commit was run. CI and live QA are separate from this review's focused evidence.

RetriggerConfidence Score: 4/5

[Medium risk] Updates model discovery and catalog refresh logic for Claude.

The PR should not merge until Claude live discovery respects the user's explicit models.curated list.

Findings

  1. P1 Configured model lists are bypassed ▶
Summary

The PR keeps advertised ACP models when individual option checks fail, maps Claude aliases to release IDs, and forces composer refreshes while showing provider errors.

  • Since the previous review, only a test error message changed from “cancelled” to “canceled.”
  • No new findings were identified.

P1 Configured model lists are bypassed

Marking every advertised Claude row ExplicitlyCurated adds newly advertised models to the default picker even when the user left them out of models.curated. Config priority cannot prevent this: rows merge by model ID, and ExplicitlyCurated is combined with OR rather than taken from the highest-priority source.

Use provider-driven curation only when the user has not supplied an explicit list. Add a test with both config and live sources to preserve that choice.

Re-review

Verdict: approve — both prior P2 findings resolved; no new actionable regressions found in the follow-up diff.

Reviewed only 57a5fe030b9fd49fb5e31556751187eb97001717..fc5475b0085ddfce0fb924efe4bfca51d647ba9b. Ran git pull --ff-only; the branch was already current. Local HEAD and the remote PR head matched fc5475b0085ddfce0fb924efe4bfca51d647ba9b.

Resolution of the two findings

  1. Static reasoning fallback after failed probes — resolved. ACP inspection now records a model error for every option left unobserved after deadline exhaustion. The live catalog carries the preferred transport's failed observation into the row's redacted LastError. The reasoning merge stops at that fresh live row instead of borrowing builtin effort levels or defaults. The updated owning service test includes seeded claude-sonnet-5, verifies ReasoningKnown=false, no efforts/default, and failure provenance after refresh and merged read; acknowledged models retain their observed efforts. Existing row persistence retains this error field without a schema change.
  2. Silent HTTP-200 partial refresh failure — resolved. The runtime catalog hook examines successful refresh responses for failed source statuses belonging to allowed, signed-in providers and exposes their error through refreshError. The added test models a successful response with failed Claude discovery and no live rows, verifies the visible error, and preserves existing models. The forced refresh and settled query invalidation remain intact; the response's unrelated provider failure does not leak into the allowed provider's message.

Focused checks

  • go test ./internal/acp/ ./internal/modelcatalog/ -run 'TestInspectSessionModels|TestLiveProviderSources|TestMergeRows|TestCatalogServiceRefresh' -count=1 — passed for both packages, including deadline handling, seeded failure projection, merge precedence, and refresh coverage.
  • bunx turbo run test --filter=./web --only -- src/systems/model-catalog/hooks/__tests__/use-runtime-model-catalog.test.ts src/systems/model-catalog/hooks/__tests__/use-refresh-all-models.test.ts src/systems/model-catalog/adapters/__tests__/model-catalog-api.test.ts — 3 files, 19 tests passed.
  • git diff --check 57a5fe030..HEAD — passed.
  • All four production files changed in this follow-up remain below 500 lines.
  • Working tree remained clean. No repository code/test edits, commits, pushes, full gates, or E2E runs were performed.

This approval supersedes the original verdict for the two findings and covers only the requested follow-up range. It is not a claim of full CI or live daemon/browser QA completion.

Claude Code advertises newly shipped models only as version aliases
(opus = "Opus 5.5"), so the live parser kept them as bare alias rows that
never joined the curated browse list, which stayed pinned to the seeded
builtin set. One rejected or slow per-model option probe also failed the
whole ACP listing, flipping the provider to stale, and the composer
refresh sent an unforced request that returned the cached failed status.

- acp: per-model option probes are best-effort; the advertised list wins.
- modelcatalog: name Claude aliases after their advertised release and
curate the provider's advertised list, featuring current aliases.
- web: the composer refresh forces rediscovery like settings refresh.

A failed or unfinished per-model ACP option probe left the live row
without options, so the reasoning merge fell through to static builtin
seed levels and presented them as known. Record the probe failure on the
row and treat it as authoritative unknown reasoning instead.

A forced aggregate refresh answers 200 when any source succeeds, so a
failed live source with no cached rows was invisible in the composer.
Surface failed sources of the surface's signed-in providers as the
refresh error while keeping the partial results.
