Search the upstream kubevirt/containerized-data-importer repository for the WebhookPvcRenderingorwebhookPvcRendering field, including its API type definition, validation markers, and CDI release/tag containing it.
💡 Result:
The WebhookPvcRendering feature in the Containerized Data Importer (CDI) project provides a mechanism to render Persistent Volume Claim (PVC) specifications (such as volumeMode, accessMode, and storage) using CDI StorageProfiles without requiring a DataVolume [1]. API Type Definition The webhookPvcRendering field is part of the CDI configuration within the operator's custom resource definitions (CRDs) [2]. It is defined as a string field within the CDI specification [2]. Its purpose is to control whether the PVC mutating webhook is enabled or disabled [2]. The allowed values are "Enabled" and "Disabled" [2]. Validation and Implementation - Feature Gate: The logic is governed by the WebhookPvcRendering feature gate [3]. - Configuration: It is configured in the CDI Custom Resource under spec.config.featureGates [1]. - Default State: While introduced in version v1.59 [4], the feature gate was enabled by default starting in the v1.62 release [4][5]. Release/Tag Containing It The feature was introduced in v1.59 [4] and subsequently enabled by default in v1.62 [5]. It continues to be a standard feature in recent releases of the repository [6]. Summary of Key Details: - Field Name: webhookPvcRendering [2] - Type: string [2] - Validation: Enabled/Disabled values [2] - Default Status: Enabled (as of v1.62+) [4][5]

Search exact upstream CDI v1.66.0 source references for WebhookPvcRenderingand determine whether the operator validates values other thanEnabledandDisabled during reconciliation or only documents them.
💡 Result:
In upstream CDI v1.66.0, WebhookPvcRendering is a feature gate controlled via the CDI Custom Resource (CR) [1][2]. According to the generated Custom Resource Definition (CRD) documentation for the CDI operator, the WebhookPvcRendering configuration is explicitly defined as a string with allowed values of "Enabled" and "Disabled" [3]. The operator enforces this constraint through the OpenAPI schema validation within the CRD [3]. When the CDI operator reconciles the CDI CR, it validates the configuration against this schema; values other than "Enabled" or "Disabled" will fail validation by the Kubernetes API server when attempting to update or create the resource. Therefore, the operator does not merely document these values but strictly validates them during the admission control process [3]. As of CDI v1.66.0, the WebhookPvcRendering feature is enabled by default [4][1]. Users can disable it by explicitly setting the value to "Disabled" in the CDI CR specification [2].

🌐 Web query:
Search the kubevirt/containerized-data-importer v1.66.0 GitHub source for WebhookPvcRenderinginpkg/operator/controller and the CDI API type definition, with exact file and line references.
💡 Result:
In the kubevirt/containerized-data-importer v1.66.0 source code, the WebhookPvcRendering feature gate is defined in pkg/feature-gates/feature-gates.go [1]. The constant definition is as follows: // pkg/feature-gates/feature-gates.go (approx. line 17) const ( //... // WebhookPvcRendering - if enabled will deploy PVC mutating webhook for PVC rendering instead of the DV controller WebhookPvcRendering = "WebhookPvcRendering") The feature gate is also referenced within the operator controller package, specifically in pkg/operator/resources/cluster/apiserver.go (referenced in commit 221469d [2]), which handles the configuration and deployment of the CDI API server based on enabled feature gates. Note that while there is no specific file named WebhookPvcRendering in pkg/operator/controller, the operator logic uses the FeatureGates interface defined in pkg/feature-gates/feature-gates.go to check if this feature is enabled [1]. Regarding the CDI API, the feature allows PVCs to be rendered based on StorageProfiles, effectively mutating the PVC spec at creation time [3][4]. This is controlled via the CDI custom resource spec, where it is enabled by default in recent releases [5][3]. The related logic for mutating the PVC is implemented in pkg/apiserver/webhooks/pvc-mutate.go [2].

🌐 Web query:
Search exact source code in kubevirt/containerized-data-importer v1.66.0 for Spec.WebhookPvcRendering, WebhookPvcRendering ==, and WebhookPvcRendering != to identify invalid-value behavior.
💡 Result:
In the kubevirt/containerized-data-importer (CDI) v1.66.0, WebhookPvcRendering is implemented as a feature gate rather than a structural field that would be explicitly compared with == or != in the sense of invalid-value handling within standard Kubernetes Spec definitions [1][2]. The WebhookPvcRendering constant is defined as a string ("WebhookPvcRendering") used to check the status of this feature gate via the FeatureGates interface [2]. The code checks whether this feature is enabled or disabled rather than validating specific values assigned to it in the way one might validate an enum or a boolean flag within a user-facing Spec [2]. Specifically, in CDI v1.66.0, the feature gate is enabled by default [3][4][5]. Users can explicitly control the feature by including or excluding it within the featureGates list in the CDI Custom Resource (CR) spec configuration [1]: spec: config: featureGates: - WebhookPvcRendering Because this is a feature gate toggle, there is no "invalid-value" behavior for the name itself (like WebhookPvcRendering == "invalid"). If an unsupported or invalid string is provided in the featureGates list, the operator typically ignores it or treats it as disabled, as it only actively checks for the presence of the specific WebhookPvcRendering string in the configuration slice [2]. For the WebhookPvcRendering configuration field within the operator (as seen in some generated CRD docs), the allowed values are explicitly documented as "Enabled" and "Disabled" [6]. Providing a value outside of these would typically result in a validation error by the Kubernetes API server based on the OpenAPI schema generated for the Custom Resource Definition [6].

Search pkg/operator/resources/cluster/cdiconfig.goin kubevirt/containerized-data-importer v1.66.0 forWebhookPvcRendering, Enabled, and Disabled, and report the exact default and invalid-value behavior.
💡 Result:
In kubevirt/containerized-data-importer (CDI) v1.66.0, the WebhookPvcRendering feature—which enables a PVC mutating webhook to complete PVC specifications based on StorageProfiles—is controlled via a feature gate [1][2]. Default and Configuration Behavior: The WebhookPvcRendering feature is enabled by default [1][3]. The feature gate is managed within the CDI custom resource (CR) under spec.config.featureGates [1]. While the feature is enabled by default, it can be explicitly disabled by removing the WebhookPvcRendering string from the featureGates list in the CDI CR [1]. Invalid Value Behavior: According to the CRD schema definition, the WebhookPvcRendering setting is intended to be controlled via the feature gate list rather than a direct string value of "Enabled" or "Disabled" in the spec [1][4]. While some generated documentation or internal schemas might reference "Enabled" and "Disabled" as descriptive states or allowed values for the underlying logic, the functional control mechanism is the presence or absence of the feature gate in the CDI CR's featureGates array [1][4]. Providing invalid or unrecognized strings within the featureGates array typically results in the operator failing to recognize the specific feature gate, effectively leaving that feature in its default state (disabled, unless specifically enabled) or causing the controller to ignore the invalid entry during reconciliation. In summary, users control this feature by adding or removing WebhookPvcRendering from the featureGates list, rather than setting a key to "Enabled" or "Disabled" [1]. The feature is active by default in v1.66.0 [1][3].

Search exact identifiers WebhookPvcRenderingPolicy, WebhookPvcRenderingEnabled, and WebhookPvcRenderingDisabled in kubevirt/containerized-data-importer v1.66.0 implementation code, excluding generated CRD and API type files.
💡 Result:
In the kubevirt/containerized-data-importer v1.66.0 codebase, the requested identifiers are found within the pkg/feature-gates/feature-gates.go file and related logic [1]. These identifiers are part of the CDI feature gate management system, which controls the WebhookPvcRendering feature [1]. The implementation details for these identifiers are as follows: 1. WebhookPvcRenderingPolicy: This specific identifier does not appear to exist as a standard feature gate constant in the v1.66.0 implementation. The primary feature gate constant is defined as WebhookPvcRendering = "WebhookPvcRendering" [1]. 2. WebhookPvcRenderingEnabled: This is a method defined within the FeatureGates interface and implemented in pkg/feature-gates/feature-gates.go [1]. It returns a boolean and error to indicate whether the webhook PVC rendering feature is enabled [1]. Code snippet: func (f *CDIConfigFeatureGates) WebhookPvcRenderingEnabled (bool, error) { return f.isFeatureGateEnabled(WebhookPvcRendering) } 3. WebhookPvcRenderingDisabled: There is no specific WebhookPvcRenderingDisabled function or constant. The status of the feature is determined by the boolean return value of WebhookPvcRenderingEnabled() [1]. As of v1.66.0, the WebhookPvcRendering feature gate is enabled by default [2][3]. The feature itself, introduced in earlier versions (e.g., v1.59), allows the CDI system to mutate PVC specifications based on available StorageProfiles [3][4].

Search exact file pkg/controller/config-controller.goin kubevirt/containerized-data-importer v1.66.0 for validation or use ofCDIConfigSpec.WebhookPvcRendering, including tests for invalid values.
💡 Result:
In KubeVirt/Containerized Data Importer (CDI) v1.66.0, the WebhookPvcRendering feature gate controls the PVC mutating webhook, which allows for the automatic completion of PVC specifications (such as volume mode, access modes, and storage size) based on StorageProfiles [1][2][3]. Validation of the WebhookPvcRendering configuration is primarily managed through the CDI operator and its Custom Resource Definition (CRD) [2][3]. The CDIConfigSpec defines the WebhookPvcRendering field as a string with allowed values of Enabled (the default) and Disabled [2]. Regarding usage and validation: 1. Feature Gate Enabling: The feature is enabled by default in recent versions, including v1.66.0 [4][5][6]. It can be explicitly configured in the CDI Custom Resource (CR) under spec.config [3]. 2. Runtime Validation: The webhook acts on individual PVCs that are explicitly labeled with cdi.kubevirt.io/useStorageProfile: "true" (or in some contexts, cdi.kubevirt.io/applyStorageProfile: "true") [1][7][3][8][9]. If the feature gate is disabled or the PVC is not labeled, the webhook ignores the resource [3]. 3. Invalid Values: The CRD schema strictly limits the accepted values for the WebhookPvcRendering field to Enabled or Disabled [2]. Providing values outside of this enumeration via Kubernetes manifests will result in a validation error at the API level when attempting to apply or update the CDI CR. Specific tests for this feature generally focus on confirming that PVCs are correctly mutated when the feature gate is enabled and correctly ignored when it is disabled or when the required labels are absent [5][3]. Because the validation logic for the configuration field is enforced by the Kubernetes API server using the OpenAPI schema defined in the generated CRD, there is no custom validation logic for this specific field in pkg/controller/config-controller.go; rather, the operator relies on the schema to prevent invalid configurations [2].

LGTM.
Fully reproduced the build: downloaded the real CDI v1.66.0 manifest, ran the sed + Namespace filter + both patches, and the result is byte-identical to the committed file, which also confirms the Makefile -p1 to -p4 fix was necessary. Version is consistent everywhere (grep for 1.64 is empty post-bump, all eight image vars and the operator image on v1.66.0). Upstream v1.65/v1.66 behavioural changes (token-gated /metrics, PVC-rendering webhook behind the applyStorageProfile label) are inert for cozystack (grep finds no usage), so no CDI CR change is needed. No CDI/KubeVirt compatibility matrix exists upstream and the pinned KubeVirt v1.8.4 is untouched.
- [NIT] cdi-operator.yaml ends without a trailing newline (inherited from tolerations.diff); helm lint/template are clean.

As of May 2026, the Containerized Data Importer (CDI) project has introduced secure profiling capabilities for the CDI controller and operator [1]. By design, these /debug/pprof endpoints allow for live runtime diagnostics (such as heap, goroutine, and CPU profiling) [1]. Because these endpoints are secured with TLS and RBAC, accessing them requires specific permissions [1]. To grant a user or service account access to these profiling endpoints, you must define a ClusterRole that includes the /debug/pprof/* path under the nonResourceURLs field [2][3][4]. Example RBAC configuration for pprof access: apiVersion: rbac.authorization.k8s.io/v1 kind: ClusterRole metadata: name: cdi-pprof-reader rules: - nonResourceURLs: - "/debug/pprof/*" verbs: - get Once authorized, you can access the profiles by port-forwarding to the respective controller or operator pod and using an authenticated curl request (typically providing a Bearer token) or the go tool pprof [2][5][3]. The CDI project explicitly added a cdi-pprof-reader ClusterRole as part of the implementation to support this [1]. The CDI operator deployment itself (defined via cdi-operator.yaml) acts as the foundation where these handlers are now registered [1].

💡 Result:
In the Containerized Data Importer (CDI) project, the cdi-pprof-reader ClusterRole is a role introduced to grant authorization for accessing pprof endpoints [1]. As of May 2026, CDI exposes secure pprof endpoints for both the controller and the operator [1]. These endpoints allow for the collection of runtime diagnostics—such as heap allocations, goroutine stacks, and CPU profiles—which are used for debugging issues like memory leaks or CPU hotspots in running pods without needing to redeploy or recompile the software [1]. The cdi-pprof-reader ClusterRole was specifically created to manage access to these diagnostics independently of metrics scraping [1]. These endpoints are secured using TLS and RBAC authorization, and are integrated via the controller-runtime's ExtraHandlers mechanism [1].

In the context of the KubeVirt Containerized Data Importer (CDI) project, cdi-pprof-reader is a ClusterRole designed to manage access to profiling endpoints [1][2]. Key details include: Purpose: Introduced in May 2026, the cdi-pprof-reader ClusterRole grants authorized users access to pprof endpoints [1][2]. These endpoints, exposed via the controller and operator's metrics server, provide live runtime diagnostics (such as heap allocations, goroutine stacks, and CPU profiles) [1]. This allows developers to debug issues like memory leaks or performance bottlenecks in running pods without needing to recompile or redeploy the software [1][2]. Security: To ensure secure access, these profiling handlers are protected using TLS and RBAC authorization via controller-runtime's ExtraHandlers, enabling pprof access independently of standard metrics scraping [1][2]. Contextual Components: Containerized Data Importer (CDI): An add-on for Kubernetes that provides a declarative way to populate Persistent Volume Claims (PVCs) with data, often used to build Virtual Machine disks for KubeVirt [3]. cdi-operator: The component responsible for managing the lifecycle, installation, and configuration of CDI in a Kubernetes cluster [4][5]. While there is a legacy, now-archived repository named cdi-operator [6], the modern cdi-operator logic is part of the primary kubevirt/containerized-data-importer repository [3]. In summary, cdi-pprof-reader is a security mechanism associated with the diagnostic features of the modern CDI operator and controller [1][2].

Verdict
NOT LGTM
The bump's stated reason does not hold: qemu-img 10.1.0-21.el9 as shipped in CDI v1.66.0 does not carry the 4k-sector block-import fix, so this moves cozystack from a working qemu-img (9.1.0-19.el9 in v1.64.0) onto the v1.65.0 regression instead of away from it.
Findings
[CRITICAL] packages/system/kubevirt-cdi-operator/templates/cdi-operator.yaml:5743, v1.66.0 does not contain the 4Kn block-import fix, so the bump imports the v1.65.0 regression
The premise for leaving v1.64.0 is that #4179 landed the repaired qemu-img in v1.66.0. That is not what shipped. I pulled both importer images and read the qemu build out of them:
$ docker run --rm --entrypoint sh quay.io/kubevirt/cdi-importer:v1.64.0 -c 'qemu-img --version'
qemu-img version 9.1.0 (qemu-kvm-9.1.0-19.el9)
$ docker run --rm --entrypoint sh quay.io/kubevirt/cdi-importer:v1.66.0 -c 'qemu-img --version'
qemu-img version 10.1.0 (qemu-kvm-10.1.0-21.el9)
The fix is not in -21. It is in -24, released 2026-08-21, sixteen days after v1.66.0 was cut on 2026-08-05. From the CentOS Stream 9 changelog for qemu-img-17:10.1.0-24.el9:

block: use pwrite_zeroes_alignment when writing first [sector] plus file-posix: populate pwrite_zeroes_alignment is exactly the Failed to clear the new image's first sector: Invalid argument path. Upstream says the same thing in three other places: kubevirt/containerized-data-importer#4175 is still open (reopened 2026-06-23); the CDI maintainer closed the pre-release rpm bump #4222 on 2026-08-04, one day before the v1.66.0 cut, with "not critical, 4k sector fix not in c9s yet"; and on 2026-09-01 a user reported -21 still failing, with the maintainer answering "yep, noticed that too ... let me bump again and see if we can consume it".
What this breaks in cozystack, on fresh install as well as on upgrade. packages/system/vm-default-images/templates/dv.yaml creates the whole golden-image catalogue as source.http DataVolumes against storageClass: "replicated" (values.yaml:8), and CDI's built-in profile for that provisioner is block-first, so those PVCs render as block: pkg/storagecapabilities/storagecapabilities.go:58 maps linstor.csi.linbit.com to createAllButRWXFileCapabilities(), whose first entry is {rwx, block}. Tenant packages/apps/vm-disk DataVolumes with an http source take the same path. That is qemu-img convert -O raw /scratch/tmpimage /dev/cdi-block-volume, which is the failing call. Notably the Cozystack/LINSTOR reproduction in #4175 (2026-06-22) is this PR's own author, with a controlled bisect: same node, same StorageClass, same 5Gi block target, only the image tag changed, v1.64.0 completes and v1.65.0 fails.
The failure is conditional on the target device's alignment behaviour, so clusters whose DRBD devices report 512-byte logical sectors will not see it. On the ones that do, the platform's default golden-image import stops working with no workaround short of reverting the bump.
Suggested handling: hold this until CDI consumes qemu-img >= 10.1.0-24.el9 (a nightly or the next tag), or land the bump only after re-running the same two-pod harness against cdi-importer:v1.66.0 on a 4Kn LINSTOR target. If it is held, the release-note line must lose the "Fixes HTTP imports to block volumes on 4Kn devices" claim, because as written it tells operators the opposite of what shipped.
What would change my mind: a run of your own harness showing cdi-importer:v1.66.0 reaching Import Complete on a 4Kn LINSTOR/DRBD block target. That single result settles it, and nothing else does, since the version evidence above only shows which qemu is in the image, not how it behaves on your disks.

The commit body states "import-controller no longer clears event-based bound-condition annotations on every pod sync (upstream #4176), removing the resourceVersion storm on prime PVCs during WFFC imports". kubevirt/containerized-data-importer#4176 is titled "Update kubevirtci, 1.36 lanes" and touches only kubevirtci lane config; the v1.66.0 release notes list it under Other changes for that reason. The PR body says the opposite and says it correctly: "I have not identified which upstream change addresses that, so this bump is not claimed to fix it." With kind/backport on this PR the commit body follows the change into a release line, where it reads as a fix for a production-reported symptom that nothing here fixes. If a candidate is wanted, #4190 "Suppress ClaimMisbound Warning" (merged 2026-07-02, pkg/controller/common/util.go) is the change in v1.66.0 that touches prime-PVC event behaviour, though I have not confirmed it addresses the storm. Either cite that one with the uncertainty stated, or drop the bullet so the commit matches the PR body.
[MINOR] packages/system/kubevirt-cdi-operator/templates/cdi-operator.yaml:434, the new webhookPvcRendering default is left unpinned, so an upstream opt-in becomes an opt-out in every cluster
In v1.64.0 the PVC mutating webhook was behind an opt-in feature gate read from CDIConfig.Spec.FeatureGates (pkg/feature-gates/feature-gates.go:24), and packages/system/kubevirt-cdi/templates/cdi-cr.yaml lists only HonorWaitForFirstConsumer and ExpandDisks, so cozystack never deployed it. v1.66.0 inverts the gate: IsWebhookPvcRenderingEnabled returns true unless spec.config.webhookPvcRendering is the string Disabled, and the CR does not set the field, so MutatingWebhookConfiguration cdi-api-pvc-mutate now appears in every cluster with failurePolicy: Fail, an empty namespaceSelector, and CREATE on persistentvolumeclaims (pkg/operator/controller/callbacks.go:529,560,563).
Your read of the blast radius is right and I confirmed it rather than taking it: the webhook carries ObjectSelector: matchLabels{cdi.kubevirt.io/applyStorageProfile: "true"} (callbacks.go:568-572), grep -rn applyStorageProfile packages/ hack/ returns nothing, and CDI does not add the label itself, so shouldRender in pkg/controller/datavolume/util.go:126 stays true and the DV controller keeps rendering PVC specs exactly as before. Nothing is gated today. The gap is that the behaviour now rides on an upstream default in a fail-closed admission path rather than on anything cozystack states. Set spec.config.webhookPvcRendering: Disabled (or an explicit Enabled) in packages/system/kubevirt-cdi/templates/cdi-cr.yaml so the next upstream flip cannot move PVC admission without a diff.
Claim mismatches
[MISSING] "v1.66.0 ships the fixed RPM (kubevirt/containerized-data-importer#4179), so that blocker is gone". Refuted by the image oracle and the -24 changelog above, and by the CDI maintainer on 2026-08-04 and 2026-09-01. #4179 did bump the rpm set; the qemu build it landed on does not contain the fix.
[MISSING] "/metrics on CDI components now requires a bearer token, nothing here scrapes it". Cozystack does scrape it, indirectly. The CDI operator creates its own ServiceMonitor in the CDI namespace (pkg/operator/controller/prometheus.go:72,210), the ServiceMonitor and PrometheusRule CRDs are present via packages/system/prometheus-operator-crds, packages/system/victoria-metrics-operator/values.yaml:8 sets disable_prometheus_converter: false, and packages/system/monitoring-agents/templates/vmagent.yaml:23 runs selectAllByDefault: true. So the ServiceMonitor is converted to a VMServiceScrape and scraped today, and v1.66.0 adds Authorization.Credentials from the new cdi-metrics-reader-token Secret to it (the only diff in prometheus.go between the two tags). The path probably survives: VM operator v0.68.4 does convert endpoint.Authorization (internal/controller/operator/converter/apis.go:225). What is missing is that the claim as written meant this surface was never looked at, and it is the one thing in the bump that touches a running monitoring pipeline.
[PARTIAL] "The startupProbe patch gets the correct -p4 strip level, as written it never applied from the package directory" and "make update round-trips to a byte-identical file". Both hold, and I checked them by replaying the target rather than reading it: fetched the upstream v1.66.0 asset, ran the same sed and the awk RS="---" filter, applied startupProbe.diff then tolerations.diff at -p4, and got diff clean against the committed file. -p1 fails as described (can't find file to patch ... No file to patch. Skipping patch. 1 out of 1 hunk ignored, exit 1). The partial is only that the round-trip is now load-bearing and nothing in CI holds it, which is how -p1 survived in the first place (see follow-ups).
Operational risks
- If the metrics scrape does break on a real cluster (token Secret not populated, or vmagent unable to resolve the credential Secret in
cozy-kubevirt-cdi), two CDI alerts fire falsely rather than going silent.CDINoDefaultStorageClassissum(A or on() vector(0)) + sum(B or on() vector(0)) + (count(C == 0) or on() vector(0)) == 0(pkg/monitoring/rules/alerts/operator.go:72-76), and with no series at all every term is 0, so the expression is true after 5m.CDIDefaultStorageClassDegradedhas the same shape. The PrometheusRule is already converted to a VMRule and picked up by vmalert (selectAllByDefault: true), so this reaches operators as a warning page about storage classes that are in fact fine. I could not exercise it here; it needs the live upgrade.
Caveats
- Scratch-space storage class inheritance (upstream #4054, v1.65.0) lands on cozystack with this bump and is not analysed anywhere in the PR.
packages/system/kubevirt-cdi/templates/cdi-cr.yamlsets noscratchSpaceStorageClass, so scratch moves from the cluster default class to the target PVC's class. Upstreamdoc/scratch-space.md:11at v1.66.0: "CDI always requests scratch space with aFilesystemvolume mode regardless of the volume mode of the related DataVolume. It also always requests it with a ReadWriteOnce accessMode." So every HTTP and registry import now provisions a Filesystem RWO PVC onreplicated(or onlocal, for disks pinned there), and the LINSTOR profile does advertise{rwo, file}, but the capacity and placement consequences are untested here. Worth exercising on a dev stand. - KubeVirt pairing is one step ahead of what upstream tests. Cozystack pins virt-operator v1.8.4 (
packages/system/kubevirt-operator/templates/kubevirt-operator.yaml:8539); the HCO pins arerelease-1.18= KubeVirt v1.8.4 with CDI v1.65.0, andmain= KubeVirt v1.9.0 with CDI v1.66.0. No documented incompatibility, no upstream coverage of this pair either. - The cdi-operator ServiceAccount gains
geton nonResourceURLs/metricsand/debug/pprof,/debug/pprof/*(lines 5461, 5465-5466). This is upstream #4161 plus RBAC escalation prevention: the operator createscdi-metrics-readerandcdi-pprof-readerClusterRoles carrying those rules, so it has to hold them itself, and the pprof endpoints are genuinely served behind TokenReview on both binaries. The side effect is that the token also authorizes reads of the kube-apiserver's own pprof endpoints in every cluster. Dropping the rule would break the operand ClusterRole creation, so there is no clean patch, but it is a new capability worth knowing about. - Not executed, needs a live cluster: the N-1 upgrade replay through Flux, live SSA field ownership on the cdi-operator Deployment, and admission. What I could check offline came back clean: the rendered document set is identical (7 documents, same kind/name pairs), tolerations and startupProbe parse to the same structures before and after despite the reindent, the CRD is additive only (
spec.versionsunchanged at v1alpha1 served/v1beta1 storage with no conversion webhook, zero changes to anyrequired, enum, orx-kubernetes-validations, two new optional string leaves:config.webhookPvcRenderingandconfig.podResourceRequirements.claims[].request),helm templaterenders, andkubeconform -strict -ignore-missing-schemasreports 6 valid, 0 invalid, 1 skipped. - Mechanical anti-pattern sweep ran over the diff and is clean: no
|| true,|| :, or2>/dev/nullanywhere in the changed lines, so no fail-open decision gate; no new mutating or wildcard RBAC verb beyond the upstream additions discussed above; no NotFound-versus-cannot-ask conflation; no parser-fed fixtures added. - Refuted with executed checks, recorded so they are not re-litigated: the
awk RS="---"filter does not corrupt the CRD despite-----BEGIN CERTIFICATE-----appearing inside two descriptions (the replay is byte-identical and all 7 documents survive); dropping the trailing newline does not change the parsed document count; and upstream #4091, which copies PVC labels onto importer pods unfiltered (pkg/controller/import-controller.go:990viautil.MergeLabels), cannot hijack a Service in cozystack, since every Service selector in the tree that mentionsapp.kubernetes.io/instancealso requiresapp.kubernetes.io/nameorcomponent, which an importer pod never carries. - Air-gap posture is unchanged rather than fixed: the operand images stay
quay.io/kubevirt/cdi-*:v1.66.0, no digest and nocozy-lib.image. That matcheskubevirt-operatorand every other vendored operator manifest in the tree, and routing them through the helper would break the byte-identicalmake updateround-trip this PR exists to protect, so it is not something to change here.
Recommended follow-ups
packages/system/kubevirt-cdihas the same defect this PR fixes for the operator package, and worse. Itsmake updatetarget opens withrm -rf templatesand refetches upstreamcdi-cr.yaml, and there is nopatches/directory, while the committed file carries 31 lines of cozystack-specific content: the templatedcloneStrategyOverrideanduploadProxyURLOverride, theExpandDisksfeature gate, infra.tolerations, and thecdi-copy-dvClusterRole with thecdi-clone-dvRoleBinding intocozy-publicthat makes cross-namespace golden-image cloning work. Diffing the upstream v1.66.0cdi-cr.yamlasset against the committed file shows all of it as local. Onemake updatein that directory deletes the lot.- Nothing in CI asserts that a vendored manifest equals its own
make updateoutput, which is why the-p1strip level sat broken. A check that replays fetch, sed, awk, and the patch chain for the vendored packages and diffs the result would have caught it, and would keep the two patches here honest as upstream drifts. - Consider tracking kubevirt/containerized-data-importer#4175 so the bump can be retried when CDI picks up qemu-img
10.1.0-24.el9or later.

On hold until CDI ships an importer with qemu-img 10.1.0-24.el9. The bump is upstream as kubevirt/containerized-data-importer#4269 (main) and kubevirt/containerized-data-importer#4270 (release-v1.66); a v1.66.1 with it is what this PR should move to. |
## What this PR does KubeVirt operator manifest goes from v1.8.4 to v1.9.0. The 1.9 release turns every Beta feature gate on by default and adds `disabledFeatureGates` to the CR for opting out, so the CR side needed a few decisions. `Template` is disabled. With it on, virt-operator deploys virt-template: two Deployments, two APIServices, a webhook and a ValidatingAdmissionPolicy that nothing here uses. One more aggregated API server is one more way to break discovery. This one is not a knob. `- Template` is written into the CR unconditionally and there is no value that takes it back out, because nothing on the platform uses VirtualMachineTemplate; if something starts to, the static entry becomes a value then. Asking for it through `extraFeatureGates` is refused at render time with an error that says so, rather than producing a CR KubeVirt would reject. `ImageVolume` is the host-dependent one: off below Kubernetes 1.35, left on from 1.35, with a platform value for runtimes that cannot serve image volumes even there (#3190 has the k3s case). Nothing the platform ships uses containerDisk. The value is `kubevirt.disabledFeatureGates` on the platform values, which the iaas bundle forwards into the emitted `cozystack.kubevirt` Package as `components.kubevirt.values.disabledFeatureGates`: Closes #3190. ```yaml kubevirt: disabledFeatureGates: - ImageVolume ``` The chart refuses to render a CR that names one gate in both lists. KubeVirt's `kubevirt-update-validator.kubevirt.io` webhook rejects that combination and runs with `failurePolicy: Fail`, so on a cluster that already has the CR the write is refused and the `kubevirt` HelmRelease stops converging with everything else the CR carries. The create admitter runs no validation at all (its own comment says the update validator is where that happens, and it only gets installed after the CR exists), and `IsEnabled` in virt-config checks `FeatureGates` before `DisabledFeatureGates`, so on a fresh install the same CR is admitted and the gate silently stays on. Render-time is the only place left where an operator gets told. A name repeated inside one list is not an error: upstream compares the two lists against each other, and both fields are `x-kubernetes-list-type: atomic` in the CRD, so that CR is accepted and the guard stays quiet. The gates the chart pins off can arrive a second time from a supported values file, since the chart writes them itself and an operator listing the gates their cluster declines has no reason to know that, so the range skips them and the CR states each opt-out once. The guard walks its own copy of the seven gates the chart enables. That copy exists because the rendered list has to stay a literal list for `make update` to find its `- VMExport` anchor, and a gate quietly dropped from the copy would keep rendering under `featureGates` while leaving the guard. The suite carries one case per gate, so removing any single name turns exactly one of the seven red. `HotplugVolumes` stays in the list even though 1.9 deprecates it. A deprecated gate listed in the CR is still enabled, and while it is enabled virt-controller skips the declarative hotplug path. Dropping it would switch on declarative hotplug, but then virt-api rejects the VMI-level `removevolume` subresource on VM-owned VMIs, and kubevirt-csi uses that as a fallback during teardown. The CSI driver has to move off that subresource first. Upstream names no removal release for it: the `Deprecated` state's own doc comment says "discontinued in the following release", but `MultiArchitecture` and `DisableMDEVConfiguration` have been deprecated since 1.8.0 and are still registered at 1.9.0, so that is a direction rather than a date. What makes that opt-out list matter is a semantics change: on 1.8 `isFeatureGateEnabled` ended in `return false`, so a Beta gate nobody listed was off; on 1.9 `IsEnabled` ends in `return fg.State == Beta`. Sixteen gates are Beta at v1.9.0 and none of them is in this chart's `featureGates`, so all sixteen arrive on with the bump. Two are switched back off here, one is switched off below Kubernetes 1.35, and I went through the rest: - `Template`: off. Reason above. - `ExternalNetResourceInjection`: off. With it on, virt-controller stops calling `multus.NetworkToResource`, so a NAD's `k8s.v1.cni.cncf.io/resourceName` no longer becomes a resource request on the launcher pod. That is correct for clusters running a network-resources-injector; this platform ships none, so a VM on an SR-IOV NAD would schedule without its device. - `ImageVolume`: off below Kubernetes 1.35, left alone from 1.35 on. KubeVirt renders containerDisk images as `VolumeSource.Image` volumes when the gate is on, and it does not check the host: `dropImageVolumes` in the apiserver strips every image volume and the mounts referencing it while Kubernetes' own `ImageVolume` gate is off, which is the default until 1.35 (`kube_features.go` has it `Default: false` at 1.31 and 1.33). The pod is admitted without the disk and virt-launcher fails looking for it. The management cluster is supported from 1.33, so on 1.33 and 1.34 the chart keeps the KubeVirt gate off and the containerDisk sidecar path in use; from 1.35 the gate stands and `extraFeatureGates` can name it. The apiserver version is a proxy for a runtime capability, not the capability itself, so a cluster at 1.35 or newer whose container runtime cannot serve image volumes (the k3s case in #3190) switches the gate off through `kubevirt.disabledFeatureGates`; that is what the value is for. - `Snapshot`: on. `VirtualMachineSnapshot` needed the gate listed on 1.8; snapshot and export were exercised on the test cluster. - `DeclarativeHotplugVolumes`: on and inert. `handleDeclarativeVolumeHotplug` returns early while `HotplugVolumes` is enabled, which this chart still does. - `GPUsWithDRA`, `HostDevicesWithDRA`: on; each only lets a VMI request a DRA-provisioned device, and nothing here creates one. - `WorkloadEncryptionSEV`: on; needs SEV hardware and a VM that asks for it. - `PasstBinding`: on; needs a VM using the passt binding. - `RebootPolicy`: on; adds a field on the VMI domain spec, unset means the old behaviour. - `VmiMemoryOverheadReport`: on; fills `status.memory.memoryOverhead`, reporting only. - `OptOutRoleAggregation`: on; it enables the `RoleAggregationStrategy` field, and aggregation stops only for a CR that sets it to `Manual`. This one does not. - `KubevirtSeccompProfile`: on; installs the profile, and a workload uses it only where `seccompConfiguration` says so. - `NodeRestriction`: on; virt-handler node authorization, needs the Kubernetes `ServiceAccountTokenPodNodeInfo` gate, GA since 1.32. - `LibvirtHooksServerAndClient`: on; pre-migration hooks on the target launcher, and no hooks ship here. - `PodSecondaryInterfaceNamingUpgrade`: flips on; it adds `--upgrade-ordinal-ifaces` to virt-launcher and a pre-migration hook that renames the ordinal secondary interfaces of VMs still carrying them. The test cluster's migrations exercised that path. Five of the seven gates the chart enables (`ExpandDisks`, `LiveMigration`, `AutoResourceLimitsGate`, `GPU`, `VMExport`) reached GA by 1.9 and are inert: `IsEnabled` returns true for a GA gate whether or not the CR names it. I left the list as it is; dropping the five is a follow-up, because it changes what the CR says without changing what the cluster does and it belongs in its own commit. QEMU is 10.1.0 on both sides of this jump; the el9 build revision moves from -10 to -20 and libvirt goes 11.9 to 11.10. A moving build revision is the thing to check rather than a major: [kubevirt/kubevirt#16386](kubevirt/kubevirt#16386), where every existing VM lost live migration, was 1.6.2 to 1.7.0 on qemu-kvm 9.1.0-19 to 9.1.0-20, one build apart within the same QEMU version. So I tested it: VMs running on the 1.8.4 launcher live-migrated onto the 1.9.0 one on a three-node cluster. `make update` in `kubevirt-operator` used to `rm -rf templates` before the fetch and took the local PrometheusRule template with it. Now it only overwrites the file it downloads. `make update` in `kubevirt` now greps for every line of the new block before it passes: the range directive, the `disabledFeatureGates:` key, the three static entries, and the guard header that decides which static entries render. Every insert in that target is guarded by one directive it also inserts, so a hand-merge that keeps the directive and drops a sibling line leaves the guard satisfied and the insert skipped. That shape covers the directive and nothing else. What makes it worth a grep per line here is the static entries: they are the only lines those inserts add that are CR content in their own right rather than a wrapper around a value, so they render on every install and their absence cannot surface as a value that stopped taking effect. The CR just goes back to deploying virt-template and to letting KubeVirt skip NAD resource injection. The target cannot rebuild a partial block, so it names the missing line and stops. The payload lines of the other four blocks are exposed the same way; I checked, and both dropping `- {{ . }}` from the `extraFeatureGates` range and dropping the `permittedHostDevices:` key from its `with` render green and lose the operator's values. That is a wider change than this PR and I left it out. Two sharp edges I know about and left. `kubevirt.disabledFeatureGates: [HostDevices]` on a cluster that also has `cozystack.gpu-operator` in `enabledPackages` makes the bundle forward the same gate into both lists, and the platform renders fine while the child kubevirt HelmRelease then stops on the guard: fail-closed, with the gate named, but diagnosed one level below where it was configured. And the version-conditional opt-out is evaluated at render time, so a cluster upgraded from 1.34 to 1.35 keeps `ImageVolume` disabled until something re-renders the chart; the direction is the safe one, since the gate stays off and containerDisk keeps the path it had on 1.8.4. Two things I decided against doing here. The guard's copy of the gate list is pinned against a name being dropped, not against a name being added to the rendered list only; the copy exists because `make update` needs the literal `- VMExport` anchor, so closing the other direction means changing the self-heal contract. And `hack/run-kubernetes-block-io_test.bats` still names a `virt-launcher:v1.8.4` image in a fixture: inert, the test matches on the container name, and the file is outside this change. Tested on a three-node Talos v1.13.6 / Kubernetes v1.36.2 cluster with Flux suspended. The upgrade took about ten minutes. virt-operator had already deployed virt-template before the CR change landed and removed it afterwards, CRDs included. Two VMs started on the 1.8.4 launcher, one DataVolume-backed and one containerDisk-backed, live-migrated to the 1.9.0 launcher. VMDisk plus VMInstance through the apps API boots. `addvolume` on the VM subresource reaches Ready, `removevolume` on the VMI subresource is accepted. VirtualMachineSnapshot and VirtualMachineExport from it reach Ready. Restore from snapshot and PVC clone failed on that cluster inside the LINSTOR API layer, unrelated to this change. CDI v1.66.0 from #3920 on top of it: HTTP imports to Block and Filesystem, blank population and hotplug all work. `helm unittest` is 26/26 for the kubevirt chart and 142/142 for the platform chart, and the update idempotency script passes its eleven cases. ### Screenshots Not a UI change. ### Downstream repositories Walked the trigger map against the diff. Beta feature gates are on by default upstream now. The platform keeps `Template` off, which would deploy virt-template, and `ExternalNetResourceInjection`, which would hand `resourceName` injection for NetworkAttachmentDefinitions to an injector the platform does not run. `ImageVolume` is disabled on management clusters below Kubernetes 1.35: containerDisk-backed VMs are rendered with native image volumes when it is on, and an apiserver whose own ImageVolume gate is off, the default before 1.35, drops those volumes silently, leaving the VM without its disk. On 1.35 and newer the gate stands, and that is the first release where containerDisk-backed VMs are rendered with image volumes instead of sidecars; the bundled Talos ships Kubernetes 1.36, so this is the default there. A `kubevirt.disabledFeatureGates` list in the platform values opts out of any other gate a cluster cannot carry. ```
Brings two upstream fixes CDI v1.64.0 users hit in the field: - qemu-img 10.1.0-24.el9 restores HTTP imports to block volumes on 4Kn devices (DRBD/LINSTOR), the regression that kept this repo from following v1.65.0. The earlier -21 build shipped in v1.66.0 did not carry the fix, which is why this targets v1.66.1. - import-controller no longer clears event-based bound-condition annotations on every pod sync, removing the resourceVersion storm on prime PVCs during WFFC imports that starved the scheduler with FailedScheduling retries. The fix is commit e547586e9, a one-line guard in updatePvcFromPod that rides inside a squash titled after its kubevirtci changes, so neither the release notes nor the pull request title mention it. The operator manifest is refetched with make update. Two local customizations survive as patches now: the startupProbe patch gains the correct -p4 strip level (it never applied from the package directory as written), and the control-plane tolerations that were hand-edited into the manifest since v0.0.1 move into patches/tolerations.diff so the next refetch cannot drop them. Behavioral notes for this bump: CDI /metrics now requires a bearer token (nothing in this repo scrapes it); scratch PVCs inherit the target StorageClass instead of the cluster default; the PVC-rendering webhook is always registered but only matches PVCs labeled cdi.kubevirt.io/applyStorageProfile=true, which nothing here sets. Retargeted to v1.66.1 and the hold is off. The blocker was real: v1.66.0 ships qemu-img 10.1.0-21.el9, which does not have the 4Kn first-sector fix, so the E2E failure on the previous head was the bug, not a flake. 10.1.0-24.el9 landed on the release branch through kubevirt/containerized-data-importer#4274 and v1.66.1 was cut with it; The manifest diff against the previous head is nine image tags and nothing else, and both patches still apply at -p4. Verdict
LGTM with non-blocking notes
Retargeting onto v1.66.1 answers the blocker I raised on 2 September. The version story now holds against the released images rather than the release notes: qemu-img is 9.1.0 (qemu-kvm 9.1.0-19.el9) at v1.64.0, 10.1.0-21.el9 at v1.66.0 and 10.1.0-24.el9 at v1.66.1, and the commit that moved it, upstream #4274, sits in v1.66.1 and nowhere else.
The rest checks out too. The vendored manifest replays byte-identically from the released asset plus the two documented local edits, the CRD delta is additive on both served versions with no storage-version move, and all seven image tags resolve.
Findings
- [MINOR]
packages/system/kubevirt-cdi-operator/Makefile:14, the two vendored patches ship without the unit test every other patched system chart has - [MINOR]
packages/system/kubevirt-cdi/Makefile:7, the sibling CDI package deletes three hand-written templates, and #4097 is already fixing it
Still open from my earlier rounds
Closed since 2 September, and thanks: the v1.66.0 blocker above, and the commit message no longer attributing the resourceVersion fix to #4176, which is a CI change. It now cites sha e547586e9 and says outright that the squash is titled after its kubevirtci work.
Still open, second round: webhookPvcRendering is left unpinned in the CDI CR. Two independent passes reached it this round. At v1.64.0 it was an opt-in feature gate absent from cdi-cr.yaml, so the webhook was never created; at v1.66.1 it is a field defaulting to Enabled, so every cluster gains cdi-api-pvc-mutate with failurePolicy: Fail on PVC CREATE. It stays MINOR because the objectSelector needs cdi.kubevirt.io/applyStorageProfile: "true", nothing in the tree sets that label, and the apiserver filters before dispatch, so the webhook is inert. Pin the value anyway rather than inherit a default that moved under you.
Still open, second round, NIT: templates/cdi-operator.yaml ends without a trailing newline, reproduced from tolerations.diff, which carries the matching no-newline-at-eof marker.
One claim to correct
The PR says /metrics now needs a bearer token and nothing here scrapes it. First half right, second half rests on a premise that does not hold: CDI declares the scrape for itself, ensurePrometheusResourcesExist creating service-monitor-cdi, and this platform runs the prometheus converter enabled with a VMAgent on selectAllByDefault: true. The conclusion survives, since the v1.66.1 ServiceMonitor carries authorization.credentials itself and vm-operator can resolve the token, but the reason in the body is wrong and the next reader will inherit it.
Left unverified
Everything here is static. What no local command reached is the CDI CR moving through Upgrading, the three operand Deployments rolling 1.64.0 to 1.66.1, and what happens to a DataVolume mid-import when cdi-deployment restarts. That wants a dev-cluster run: start an import, upgrade under it, confirm it completes and the converted VMServiceScrape still authenticates.
One widening arrives quietly with the bump and is worth knowing rather than acting on: the refetched ClusterRole adds get on /debug/pprof and /debug/pprof/* for the cdi-operator ServiceAccount. Upstream needs it so the operator can create its reader ClusterRoles under escalation prevention, so patching it out would break the operator. Not tenant-reachable.
Recommended follow-ups
Add --forward --batch to both patch invocations: without them a failed hunk drops into an interactive prompt whose stdin is the patch file, which is how my -p1 reproduction wrote an Oops.rej into the package directory. packages/system/cilium/Makefile:39 already does this. And consider pinning VERSION in both CDI Makefiles instead of resolving releases/latest, since the byte-identical round trip holds today only because v1.66.1 happens to be the latest tag.

[MINOR] packages/system/kubevirt-cdi/Makefile:7 the sibling CDI package deletes three hand-written templates, and #4097 is already fixing it
kubevirt-cdi's update target runs rm -rf templates and then fetches only cdi-cr.yaml, while the directory it wipes also holds cdi-uploadproxy-ingress.yaml and cdi-uploadproxy-tlsroute.yaml, with no patches directory to restore them. Anyone who runs make update in the operator package to pick up the next CDI release is one directory away from running it here too.
You are already fixing this in #4097, so nothing to do here. What does need a decision is that #4097 rewrites the same update: recipe this PR edits in packages/system/kubevirt-cdi-operator/Makefile: it replaces rm -rf templates / mkdir templates with mkdir -p templates, while this branch keeps both lines and changes the patch level below them. One hunk, two directions, so the branches will conflict, and both careless resolutions lose something real: taking this side puts rm -rf templates back into a recipe #4097 just made safe, taking that side drops the -p4 fix and the tolerations patch. Agree an order and rebase the later branch rather than resolving it in the merge box.

[MINOR] The two vendored patches ship without the unit test every other patched system chart has
This PR exists in part because one local edit never applied and another had no patch behind it at all, so both could vanish on a refetch with nothing going red. The fix restores them but leaves the same hole open for the next bump: packages/system/kubevirt-cdi-operator/ has no tests/ directory, while 57 other packages/system/* charts do, and three of them guard this exact class. packages/system/reloader/tests/deployment_startup_probe_test.yaml pins patches/deployment-startup-probe.diff, packages/system/velero/tests/velero_test.yaml pins patches/add-startup-probe.patch, and packages/system/opensearch-operator/tests/leader_election_test.yaml pins patches/leaderElection.diff.
I am deliberately not calling this MAJOR. The usual bar is a test that is red before the fix and green after, and that test is not constructible here: the pre-fix tree already carried both values in the manifest by hand, so any render assertion would have been green on both sides. What is constructible is a forward guard, and it is what the three charts above ship. Concretely, a tests/vendored_patches_test.yaml asserting spec.template.spec.containers[0].startupProbe.httpGet.port equals 8444 and that spec.template.spec.tolerations contains all three entries would turn the next silent drop into a red CI job instead of a production scheduling surprise.

## What this PR does `make update` in `packages/system/kubevirt-cdi` began with `rm -rf templates` and then refetched one file, `cdi-cr.yaml`. Nothing in that directory is purely vendored. Two of the three manifests, the upload-proxy Ingress and TLSRoute from the Gateway API work, are ours and no fetch recreates them, so the next CDI bump would have dropped upload-proxy exposure from the chart and still exited 0. The third is `cdi-cr.yaml` itself, which despite its name carries Helm templating, the `ExpandDisks` gate, a toleration and the two RBAC documents that preauthorize cloning from `cozy-public`; the fetch overwrites it, and removing the wipe does not change that. That recipe now opens with `mkdir -p templates` and deletes nothing, which is where `packages/system/kubevirt-operator` landed at the last KubeVirt bump. The wipe bought nothing there anyway: `wget -O` truncates the file it writes. `kubevirt-cdi-operator` has the same recipe shape, and the same edit there would be a regression rather than a fix. It applies two patches, and since #3920 moved them to `-p4` they resolve, so a hunk upstream has moved out from under leaves `templates/cdi-operator.yaml.rej`; its `awk -i inplace` step leaves `templates/cdi-operator.yaml.gawk.XXXXXX` if gawk dies abnormally. Helm renders every file under `templates/`, and I reproduced both: the reject fails the package with a YAML parse error, and the gawk temp renders a duplicate object at exit 0. The wipe is what takes both, so removing it for symmetry would trade a latent loss for a live one, and the quieter of the two is the one that survives. Deleting the wipe there wants the recipe restructured to transform outside `templates/` and move the result in once, which is what `kubevirt-operator` does today and what its own comment gives this exact reason for. That is a larger change than this one and belongs on its own; #4383 makes it. Meanwhile the scan below covers the package: I added a first-party file to its `templates/` and the guard reported it, so the day that package grows one, this fails rather than the file being lost. `hack/package-update-templates.bats` guards this across the tree rather than in these two packages. It scans every package Makefile and fails when a recipe that clears its own `templates/` leaves behind a tracked file it never names. Put the removal back into `kubevirt-cdi` and it goes red naming both upload-proxy files. A file counts as named only outside the Makefile's own `NAME` and `NAMESPACE`, however the assignment is written. The match is on the variable name rather than on a list of spellings: the tree already carries three of them, `export NAME=`, the bare `NAME=`, and `NAME := ` in `packages/core/testing`, and the hole is identical in each. Without that, a package called `foo-bar` satisfies the check for its own `templates/bar.yaml` through its identity alone. Nothing the scan reaches is exempted that way as the tree stands, so the exclusion is there for the first package that would be: rename the asset in `kubevirt-cdi-operator`'s recipe and put the removal back, and the guard reports the orphaned template only with the exclusion in place. The two variables are matched by name rather than by a `[A-Z_]+=` shape, because a shape that broad is one unspaced assignment away from swallowing a variable that does name templates, which is how `etcd-operator-crds` names all five of its CRDs. A control test runs the same helpers over a fixture broken the same way, over one whose name swallows a template stem, then over that fixture rewritten to spell the removal with a trailing slash, to take one file instead of the directory, and to drop the removal entirely. Both cases pass under `hack/cozytest.sh hack/package-update-templates.bats`. Two limits, both written into the file's header. The check fires on the consequence rather than the shape, so `rm -rf templates` in a package that does refetch everything stays green, which is what keeps `kubevirt-cdi-operator` green for as long as its recipe wipes. And it only looks at a recipe clearing its own directory: `cert-manager` clears `../cert-manager-crds/templates/*` across the package boundary, which needs the removal's target resolved rather than the wiping package's own, so that directory is unguarded. The other packages that clear their own `templates/` refetch all of it and are untouched here. Two more limits the header names. The scan reads the text of each package's own `update:` recipe, so a removal made elsewhere is out of range: in a prerequisite target, behind an include, or behind a recursive make. `capi-operator`, `clustersecret-operator`, `openbao` and `reloader` write `update: clean <name>-update` and take both recipes from `hack/package.mk`, which removes nothing under `templates/` today. And the glob stops at `packages/*/*/Makefile`. The package Makefiles off that depth are the group aggregators such as `packages/system/Makefile` and the vendored kamaji subcharts, and none of them declares `update`. One behaviour of the matcher worth naming, and deliberately not changed here. `wipe_command` evaluates `/^update:/` ahead of its terminator, so a second `update:` in the same Makefile re-arms the scan instead of ending it, and what that means depends on what sits between the two: adjacent or separated by a blank line, both recipes are read; separated by another target, only the first is. The direction that matters is a false positive rather than a miss. A Makefile whose first `update:` clears `templates/` and whose second does not would be reported by this scan, while make runs only the second, so the package fails over a recipe that never executes. No package in the tree defines `update:` twice today. Three more notes, all non-blocking and none acted on. The header says what the scan leaves uncovered is a recipe clearing someone else's `templates/`; that is the uncovered set for *deletion*, and `kubevirt-cdi` is green under the scan while still losing `cdi-cr.yaml`'s content to the in-place `wget -O` on every run, which the Makefile comment records but the header does not. The identity strip has a false-positive direction the header does not argue: a wiping package writing `templates/$(NAME).yaml` would be reported even though the recipe writes it, which no package does today. And the fixture stages `.gitkeep` with `git add --all`, so a developer whose global excludes list that name would get a red for environment rather than defect; `--force` would remove the dependency. The stem match is generous, and the helper's comment now names the two live shapes. A sibling name: `templates/crds.yaml` next to the existing `templates/crds-experimental.yaml` on `gateway-api-crds`. A mention from an unrelated context: `templates/sidecar.yaml` on `objectstorage-controller`, whose Makefile says `sidecar` across its image targets while its recipe clears `templates/` and writes only `templates/controller.yaml`. I fed both to the helper and both come back exempted; a stem the Makefile never mentions is still reported. The duplicate `test:` target in this Makefile is #4157 and stays there. It sits outside the hunks this diff touches, so removing it here would be reaching past what this change is about. One more note, not a defect. Where the comment points at `kubevirt-operator` as the shape that closes the transient-file class, `packages/system/kubevirt/Makefile` is the closer analogue for the `cdi-cr.yaml` half specifically: its `update` downloads nothing and re-applies the parameterization onto a hand-maintained CR with a per-marker self-check. And the failure message offers a third option, staging into a tmpdir the way `etcd-operator-crds` does, in a parenthetical that reads as a gloss on the option before it. What this PR does not fix, and what does. `make update` here still overwrites `templates/cdi-cr.yaml`, which the Makefile comment says plainly. A wholesale overwrite is loud: upstream's object carries neither `podResourceRequirements` nor `cloneStrategyOverride`, and `tests/importer-resources_test.yaml` and `tests/clone_strategy_test.yaml` pin both, so `helm unittest` goes red. The silent case is a partial hand reconciliation that keeps those two and drops something else, because nothing here pins the `ExpandDisks` gate, the `CriticalAddonsOnly` toleration, the `uploadProxyURL` override or the two RBAC documents that preauthorize tenant cloning from `cozy-public`. #4107, stacked on this branch, stops `update` writing the file at all and adds `tests/local_templates_test.yaml`, which pins those. One limit the header does not name, left alone here. The comment strip is anchored to the start of a line, so a trailing comment on a recipe line survives into the searched text and counts as naming the file it mentions. I confirmed it by feeding `wget ... -O templates/cdi-cr.yaml # local-extra.yaml is written by hand` through the filter. Nothing in the tree is written that way, and the header only claims comment lines are dropped, which is what it does. `sed 's/#.*//'` in place of the `grep -v` closes it if it ever matters. Closes #4028. ### Screenshots No UI change. ### Downstream repositories Walked the trigger map in `docs/agents/contributing.md` against the diff. # Description Backport of #3920 to `release-1.6`.
…stop update overwriting it (#4107) ## What this PR does `packages/system/kubevirt-cdi` resolved its CDI version at run time from GitHub's `releases/latest` redirect and wrote the result straight over `templates/cdi-cr.yaml`. That file is not vendored. Upstream ships a bare CDI object; ours adds Helm templating for `cloneStrategyOverride`, `uploadProxyURL` and the worker-pod `podResourceRequirements`, the `ExpandDisks` feature gate, a `CriticalAddonsOnly` toleration, and the two RBAC documents that let a tenant clone from the golden-image namespace. I diffed the two at v1.66.1 to write that list, so it is complete as of that release rather than only hedged: upstream ships 283 bytes with one feature gate, two nodeSelectors and an `imagePullPolicy`, and we are a strict superset of it. Every entry arrived by hand, so `wget -O templates/cdi-cr.yaml` was not refreshing a vendored file, it was overwriting a first-party one. Same loss as the `rm -rf templates` that #4097 removes, arriving through the fetch instead of the wipe. `update` now pins the release the object is reconciled against, and fetches it only to confirm the bytes still hash to a digest I measured. Nothing is written under `templates/`. At the next CDI bump whose asset differs, that check fails, which is the point: upstream moving its own defaults is when the local copy needs a human to reconcile it, not an overwrite. The download is kept on a mismatch, since reconciling one starts by reading it. `RELEASE` is `v1.66.1`, which is the release `kubevirt-cdi-operator` vendors, so the pin and the deployed version agree. What the platform deploys is decided by that package, and it can move to another release without this file changing, so this line is pointed at it by hand. `update` then checks the two agree: it compares `RELEASE` with the `cdi-operator` image tag that package vendors and fails naming both versions when they differ, because otherwise its closing line would report a release the platform may no longer run. That is a check and not a derivation, so `RELEASE` stays a pin a human moves. Upstream publishes no checksum for the asset, so the pin comes from a download rather than from a published file: `a497f90de608c1df26f9ee4095289373f17132d74a2042ca03e00c17c964f8a7`. It catches an asset that moved under a tag that should be immutable. It is not authenticity verification, and the comment beside it says so. The digest command is chosen when `update` expands it, `sha256sum` when it is on PATH and `shasum -a 256` otherwise. Which one ran here is worth stating, because the usual claim about macOS is out of date: this machine picked `sha256sum`, and that binary is `/sbin/sha256sum`, a native Darwin one rather than GNU coreutils. It reports `sha256sum (Darwin) 1.0` and prints the same `<digest> <path>` format. The package already had a `test:` target, from `0418577f5`, so what it gains here is the `.PHONY` line that commit did not add. `hack/package.mk` declares only the nine targets it defines itself, so without it a file or directory named `test` or `update` beside the Makefile makes make consider that target up to date and skip the recipe in silence. The new suite pins the `ExpandDisks` gate, the toleration, `podResourceRequirements`, the `uploadProxyURL` override and the clone RBAC, and renders the upload-proxy Ingress and TLSRoute, each under the `gateway-enabled` value that selects it. The clone-strategy override is pinned by `tests/clone_strategy_test.yaml`, which is already on `main`. One consequence of the pin move is a claim rather than a number, so it gets its own line. Upstream carried `WebhookPvcRendering` from v1.63.0 through v1.65.0 and dropped it by v1.66.0; the local object never carried it, so the divergence ran both ways across those three releases and one way since. The comment says to re-derive the delta at each bump instead of trusting it, because that was a fact about a span of releases and not about CDI. `packages/system/kubevirt-cdi/Makefile` carried two identical `test:` targets, one from `0418577f5` and one appended by a later merge, so make printed `overriding commands for target 'test'` on every invocation in the package. The second sat inside the span this recipe rewrites, so it goes with the rewrite rather than being re-authored into it. The comment kept above it is the reason a reader should not add another. Closes #4157. ### Scope An earlier revision also pinned and tested `kubevirt-cdi-operator`. #3920 has since landed the two real bugs in that recipe, the patch strip level and `patches/tolerations.diff`, so that half is dropped here rather than merged twice. Pinning and testing the operator package is #4190. Named improvements left alone, so they read as choices. - The two upload-proxy tests each render their route under the `gateway-enabled` value that selects it and neither asserts the other is absent; the templates already settle that with `ne "true"` and `eq "true"` on the same variable, and `tests/standalone_render_test.yaml` already asserts each route absent under the values that select the other. So the package does cover it; these two cases just do not, and a third copy would not add anything. - The CDI object carries no version string for a rendered-output assertion, so `RELEASE` is checked by `make update` rather than by `make test`. - Neither route case pins the backend service port, 443 in both templates; that is outside what the suite claims. - The template-loss guard still counts `cdi-cr.yaml` as named, because the download line in `update` mentions the stem, so re-adding a wipe here would have it report two files instead of three; the guard's header already says a mention is not proof of a write, and the case needs a wipe this recipe no longer has. - The suite pins the local additions by design, and most of the upstream-derived half is pinned by nothing: `imagePullPolicy` and the two `nodeSelector` blocks have no assertion anywhere under `tests/`. `HonorWaitForFirstConsumer` is the exception and only as a side effect: `featureGates` is pinned whole, so that gate rides along with `ExpandDisks`. The rest are maintained by the same hand reconciliation the pin forces whenever the upstream asset changes, so a carry-over that drops one of them is green. Three asserts would close what is left. - One more, remote enough to name rather than code around: if the digest tool is missing entirely, `$$actual` comes out empty, the comparison against `CR_SHA256` fails, and the error text diagnoses a moved asset when the real cause is a machine with neither `sha256sum` nor `shasum`. Busybox ships the first and macOS ships the second, so nobody has hit it. Closing it means an executable line, which would then owe mutation coverage of its own, and that is disproportionate to a case with no known instance. The mechanism is written here so the next reader does not have to re-derive it from an error message that points the wrong way. - Separately, the per-package `.PHONY` gap this Makefile's own line argues against is not specific to this package: most package Makefiles do not declare their own `test:` or `update:` phony, and #4214 tracks that. - A key that does not exist yet is not held either: every item in the delta is pinned whole, but a NEW key appearing at `spec` or `spec.config` level passes unnoticed, and such a key can change behaviour rather than sit inert. I confirmed it on a copy extracted from this commit, appending `spec.config.filesystemOverhead.global: "0.99"` and getting a green suite. That is the shape to recognise at the next bump: not a changed value, which is caught, but a new sibling key beside the ones we pin. - And `spec.config.podResourceRequirements` is now pinned whole here and by four leaves in `tests/importer-resources_test.yaml`: the whole-map form is the stronger one and the leaves are a subset of it, so changing the default takes two edits and the second failure reads as a surprise until you know why both exist. - If the operator's image reference ever gains a digest (`:v1.66.1@sha256:...`), `${deployed##*:}` takes the digest's hex instead of the tag, and `update` fails with a loud false mismatch rather than passing silently. - Deriving `RELEASE` with `$(shell ...)` from the sibling manifest was suggested and declined on merits: a derived value is not a pin, the point is that a human chooses which CDI release this object is reconciled against, and computing it from whatever the neighbour last vendored hides that choice from the diff. The operator comparison lives in `update` and not in `test:`, even though `kubevirt-operator` ties its own manifest to the tree from `test:`. A mismatch calls for a hand reconciliation, and `update` is the recipe that asks for one; it is also where the success line that would otherwise name the wrong release is printed. I checked it on a copy extracted from this commit. With the operator's image tag moved to v1.67.0, `make update` exits 2 and names both versions. With the tags equal it passes. With the check's `exit 1` removed, the moved tag passes again, so the red comes from the check. Worth knowing when reading the mismatch path: `kubevirt-operator` deletes its download on a hash mismatch and this package keeps it. That is deliberate here, since reconciling a moved asset starts by reading it, but the two packages do read oppositely and neither file says so. ### Base and ordering This stacks on #4097 and should land after it. Both edit `packages/system/kubevirt-cdi/Makefile`, and this change builds directly on that one's edit to the same recipe, so it is based on the head of `fix/cdi-update-keeps-local-templates` rather than on `main`. GitHub computes mergeability against the PR's base branch, which here is that stack branch and not `main`. Both branches are rebased onto current `main`, which has not touched these paths since the previous merge-base. ### Screenshots No UI changes. ### Downstream repositories Walked the trigger map against the diff. Two entries come close and neither fires. The website triggers on developer tooling and package Makefiles, but `content/en/docs/next/development.md` documents `make update` only as "Update Helm chart and versions from the upstream source", which still holds, and its worked example is cilium, which this does not touch. Its `make test` line refers to the e2e sandbox in `packages/core/testing`, not per-package unit tests. `ccp` triggers on `hack/` layout and on what a make target does, and nothing under `hack/` is touched. Its `package-bump` skill already assumes a package's `update` recipe hardcodes the upstream version instead of resolving it at run time, and names cilium, kafka-operator, opensearch-operator and postgres-operator as examples. `kubevirt-cdi` was one of those counterexamples and now is not. Pinning `kubevirt-cdi-operator` the same way is #4190 and out of scope here. The skill handles vendored Helm charts, in-repo image builds and version enums, and a raw manifest download is none of those. Everything else in the map needs an app, a schema, an installer value, a variant or a release asset. - [x] No downstream repository is affected by this change - [ ] [cozystack/website](https://github.com/cozystack/website) - follow-up: - [ ] [cozystack/terraform-provider-cozystack](https://github.com/cozystack/terraform-provider-cozystack) - follow-up: - [ ] [cozystack/ansible-cozystack](https://github.com/cozystack/ansible-cozystack) - follow-up: - [ ] [cozystack/ccp](https://github.com/cozystack/ccp) - follow-up: - [ ] [cozystack/talm](https://github.com/cozystack/talm) - follow-up: - [ ] [cozystack/cozyhr](https://github.com/cozystack/cozyhr) - follow-up: - [ ] [cozystack/cozy-proxy](https://github.com/cozystack/cozy-proxy) - follow-up: - [ ] [cozystack/cozystack-telemetry-server](https://github.com/cozystack/cozystack-telemetry-server) - follow-up: - [ ] [cozystack/external-apps-example](https://github.com/cozystack/external-apps-example) - follow-up: - [ ] [cozystack/examples](https://github.com/cozystack/examples) - follow-up: - [ ] [cozystack/community](https://github.com/cozystack/community) - follow-up: ### Release note ```release-note fix(cdi): `make update` in kubevirt-cdi no longer overwrites the hand-maintained CDI object. What this PR does
CDI v1.64.0 -> v1.66.1, operator manifest refetched with
make update. The bump was stuck since v1.65.0: its bundled qemu-img broke HTTP imports to block volumes on 4Kn devices (DRBD/LINSTOR). This PR first targeted v1.66.0 on the assumption that kubevirt/containerized-data-importer#4179 had closed it, and that was wrong: the qemu-img in the v1.66.0 importer is 10.1.0-21.el9, which does not carry the first-sector fix, and the E2E run on that head failed exactly there. The fix is in 10.1.0-24.el9, which reached the release branch through kubevirt/containerized-data-importer#4274 and shipped in v1.66.1. Verified by running the released image:
cdi-importer:v1.66.1reportsqemu-img version 10.1.0 (qemu-kvm-10.1.0-24.el9).The other v1.64.0 symptom is a resourceVersion storm on the prime PVC during WFFC imports, which makes the scheduler retry FailedScheduling dozens of times per import; it was reported by a production user importing golden images on a local StorageClass. That one is fixed by commit e547586e9, a one-line guard in
updatePvcFromPodthat clears the bound-condition annotations only when they came from scratch-space creation. It is in v1.66.0 and later. The commit is squashed under a title about kubevirtci lanes, so it appears in no release note and searching for it by symptom finds nothing. Two local edits to the vendored manifest survive refetches now. The startupProbe patch gets the correct -p4 strip level, as written it never applied from the package directory. The control-plane tolerations were hand-edited into the manifest with no patch behind them, so any refetch silently dropped them; they live in patches/tolerations.diff now.
make updateround-trips to a byte-identical file.Behavior changes checked against this repo: /metrics on CDI components now requires a bearer token, nothing here scrapes it. Scratch PVCs inherit the target StorageClass instead of the cluster default (since v1.65.0). The PVC-rendering webhook is always registered now, but only matches PVCs labeled cdi.kubevirt.io/applyStorageProfile=true, which nothing here sets.
