Disabled feature gate configuration
Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~25 minutes Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to This upgrade changes cluster-wide KubeVirt behavior and expands the privileged operator's access to plugin resources and a monitoring certificate secret. No direct exploit or user-facing failure is demonstrated, but the added permissions warrant explicit owner awareness and follow-up to confirm they are necessary and appropriately contained. Verdict
NOT LGTM
The vendored manifest is a faithful copy of upstream and the CR decisions hold up on their own terms. Two things block it. The new disabledFeatureGates knob is unreachable from any supported platform path, and nothing stops it producing a KubeVirt CR that virt-operator's update webhook rejects.
Findings
[MAJOR] packages/system/kubevirt/values.yaml:21, the new disabledFeatureGates value has no path an operator can reach
The release note points at this value as the way to opt out of ImageVolume on Kubernetes older than 1.35, and it's the only lever the PR gives anyone for the other Beta gates 1.9.0 switches on. Nothing sets it. grep -rn disabledFeatureGates packages/core/ returns no hits, and the Package the platform actually emits carries only cpuAllocationRatio:
$ helm template p packages/core/platform \
--set bundles.system.enabled=true --set bundles.system.variant=isp-full --set bundles.iaas.enabled=true \
| yq eval-all 'select(.kind=="Package" and .metadata.name=="cozystack.kubevirt")'
apiVersion: cozystack.io/v1alpha1
kind: Package
metadata:
name: cozystack.kubevirt
annotations:
helm.sh/resource-policy: keep
spec:
variant: default
components:
kubevirt:
values:
cpuAllocationRatio: 10
packages/core/platform/templates/bundles/iaas.yaml:13-15,45,118-128 assembles $kubevirtValues from exactly four platform inputs (resources.cpuAllocationRatio, $gpuEnabled, gpu.permittedHostDevices, gpu.mediatedDevicesConfiguration), and there is no fifth. That leaves patching the child Package by hand, which this repo's own operations doc rules out: docs/operations/backup-classes.md:221 says "patching the child Package cozystack.backupstrategy-controller directly is reverted whenever the platform helm-reconcile re-renders it". Same shape as #3333, where a documented backupStorage override reached nothing until the platform chart was taught to forward it.
Fix: add a platform value next to resources.cpuAllocationRatio and forward it in the block that already forwards extraFeatureGates, for example {{- with .Values.kubevirt.disabledFeatureGates }}{{- $_ := set $kubevirtValues "disabledFeatureGates" . -}}{{- end -}}, and document the key where the other platform knobs live. For a test, a case in packages/core/platform/tests/bundles_gpu_kubevirt_wiring_test.yaml asserting spec.components.kubevirt.values.disabledFeatureGates on the emitted cozystack.kubevirt Package is red today, because the path does not exist.
What would change my mind: if maintainers treat spec.components.<name>.values on a child Package as a supported operator surface after all, this drops to a documentation gap, and docs/operations/backup-classes.md:221 is what needs correcting instead.
[MAJOR] packages/system/kubevirt/templates/kubevirt-cr.yaml:20, a gate can land in both featureGates and disabledFeatureGates, which KubeVirt rejects
The new range appends to a list sitting directly above a hardcoded seven-entry featureGates list (lines 23-30), plus whatever extraFeatureGates contributes. Nothing checks for a name showing up on both sides. Rendered corner:
$ helm template k packages/system/kubevirt -s templates/kubevirt-cr.yaml \
-f base.yaml --set disabledFeatureGates={HotplugVolumes}
developerConfiguration:
disabledFeatureGates:
- Template
- HotplugVolumes
featureGates:
- HotplugVolumes
- ExpandDisks
- LiveMigration
- AutoResourceLimitsGate
- CPUManager
- GPU
- VMExport
Upstream refuses that object. pkg/virt-operator/webhooks/kubevirt-update-admitter.go:508-529 (v1.9.0) emits CauseTypeForbidden with feature gate "HotplugVolumes" exists on both "FeatureGates" and "DisabledFeatureGates", and kubevirt-update-validator.kubevirt.io runs with failurePolicy: Fail (pkg/virt-operator/resource/generate/components/webhooks.go:120-135). The CRD schema permits it, so helm template and kubeconform both stay quiet. Only the Go webhook says no.
Install and upgrade disagree here, and that's what makes it expensive. The check runs on Update only, and the create admitter says so in a comment at pkg/virt-operator/webhooks/kubevirt-create-admitter.go:52. A fresh install with the same values is admitted, and the gate then silently stays enabled, because IsEnabled puts explicit enable above explicit disable (pkg/virt-config/featuregate/feature-gates.go:431-454). CI on a fresh cluster passes. The failure shows up only where a KubeVirt CR already exists.
Two inputs reach this without anyone misusing anything. disabledFeatureGates: [HotplugVolumes] is the obvious first attempt after reading this PR's own note that the gate is deprecated and goes away in 1.10. And re-enabling virt-template is only expressible as extraFeatureGates: [Template], since line 19 hardcodes the opt-out and the new range can only add to it, so the single way to undo the chart's decision produces the rejected CR. When the rejection lands, the kubevirt HelmRelease fails, and everything else that CR carries stops converging with it: cpuAllocationRatio, permittedHostDevices, the virt-handler resource patch at lines 46-60.
Fix, verified to behave as intended on this chart:
{{- $staticGates := list "HotplugVolumes" "ExpandDisks" "LiveMigration" "AutoResourceLimitsGate" "CPUManager" "GPU" "VMExport" }}
{{- $enabledGates := concat $staticGates (.Values.extraFeatureGates | default list) }}
{{- range .Values.disabledFeatureGates }}
{{- if has . $enabledGates }}
{{- fail (printf "disabledFeatureGates: %q is also enabled via featureGates/extraFeatureGates; KubeVirt rejects a gate listed in both" .) }}
{{- end }}
{{- end }}
{{- if has "Template" (.Values.extraFeatureGates | default list) }}
{{- fail "extraFeatureGates: \"Template\" conflicts with the chart's static disabledFeatureGates entry" }}
{{- end }}
$ helm template k . -s templates/kubevirt-cr.yaml -f base.yaml --set disabledFeatureGates={HotplugVolumes}
Error: execution error at (cozy-kubevirt/templates/kubevirt-cr.yaml:5:8): disabledFeatureGates: "HotplugVolumes" is also enabled via featureGates/extraFeatureGates; KubeVirt rejects a gate listed in both
$ helm template k . -s templates/kubevirt-cr.yaml -f base.yaml --set extraFeatureGates={Template}
Error: execution error at (cozy-kubevirt/templates/kubevirt-cr.yaml:9:6): extraFeatureGates: "Template" conflicts with the chart's static disabledFeatureGates entry
$ helm template k . -s templates/kubevirt-cr.yaml -f base.yaml --set disabledFeatureGates={ImageVolume} # still renders
Render featureGates from $staticGates rather than repeating the seven names, so the guard and the rendered list can't drift apart. Two failedTemplate cases in packages/system/kubevirt/tests/kubevirt_cr_test.yaml, one per branch, are both red without the guard.
[MINOR] docs/gpu-vgpu.md:358, the containerDisk example in a file this PR edits now runs on the ImageVolume path
The vGPU walkthrough boots its sample VM from containerDisk: quay.io/containerdisks/ubuntu:24.04. With ImageVolume on by default, virt-controller renders that as a Kubernetes image: volume source instead of the old sidecar (pkg/virt-controller/services/rendervolumes.go:726-740, reached from services/template.go:968-977), which is exactly the case the release note gates on Kubernetes 1.35+ and an image-volume-capable runtime. The guide says nothing about it, and the opt-out it would otherwise point at is the unreachable one from the first finding. This PR already rewrites the file's prerequisites list, so the note belongs in the same pass.
Claim mismatches
[PARTIAL] "The 1.9 release turns every Beta feature gate on by default ... so the CR side needed a few decisions." The premise is correct (State doc comment flips from "disabled by default" in v1.8.4 to "enabled by default" in v1.9.0, and release note PR #17405 states it), but the decisions cover 3 of the 21 gates whose effective state changes for an existing cluster. The full computed diff is in Caveats.
[PARTIAL] "The kubevirt chart gets a disabledFeatureGates value, same shape as extraFeatureGates, for hosts that can't carry it." The value exists in the chart. No supported configuration path sets it. See the first finding.
[PARTIAL] "Nothing we ship uses containerDisk." True of every chart-rendered VM shape (packages/apps/vm-instance/templates/vm.yaml:110-115 and packages/apps/kubernetes-nodes/templates/nodegroup.yaml:75-107 both use dataVolume only), and shouldAddLauncherBinaryVolume (rendervolumes.go:858-868) confirms a DataVolume-only VMI gets no image volume at all. Not true of what the docs ship to users: docs/gpu-vgpu.md:358.
Operational risks
- Upgrade window where virt-template is deployed and then removed. The
kubevirtHelmRelease hasdependsOn: kubevirt-operator(packages/core/platform/sources/kubevirt.yaml), so virt-operator 1.9.0 starts against the pre-existing CR, which has nodisabledFeatureGates, andTemplateis Beta and therefore on (pkg/virt-config/featuregate/active.go:322). The embedded bundle it then applies is 35 objects, including two Deployments pullingquay.io/kubevirt/virt-template-apiserver:v0.2.2andquay.io/kubevirt/virt-template-controller:v0.2.2, and two aggregated APIServices forsubresources.template.kubevirt.io(pkg/virt-operator/resource/generate/components/data/virt-template/install-virt-operator.yaml:1427,1534,1663,1682). The PR body reports this happening and self-clearing. On a cluster that can't pull those two images, and they are new to this release and reach quay.io directly like every other kubevirt image here, the APIServices stay unavailable, aggregated discovery degrades, and Helm operations that enumerate server APIs can fail, including the reconcile of the very HelmRelease that would remove virt-template. Reasoned from the code, not executed, since it needs a live cluster. A migration that stampsdisabledFeatureGates: [Template]onto the live CR before the package upgrade would close the window entirely: v1.8.4 accepts it, sincedisabledFeatureGatesis in the 1.8.4 CRD at the same path and v1.8.4'svalidateFeatureGatesonly rejects the both-lists case. - Live migration of a VM with a VPC secondary interface is unexercised while two gates that touch that exact shape flip on.
packages/apps/vm-instance/templates/vm.yaml:125-128attaches multus networks backed by the NADspackages/apps/vpc/templates/vpc.yaml:51-66creates.PodSecondaryInterfaceNamingUpgradebecoming default-on changes what the migration target pod gets (pkg/network/pod/annotations/generator.go:94-97stops inheriting the source's ordinal scheme) and adds--upgrade-ordinal-ifacesto virt-launcher (services/template.go:483-485).ExternalNetResourceInjectionbecoming default-on stops virt-controller reading NADs at all (services/template.go:427-433). The PR's test notes cover DataVolume and containerDisk VMs on the pod network.hack/select-e2e.shon this diff selectskubernetes-latest kubernetes-oidc-customconfig kubernetes-oidc-system kubernetes-previous vminstance, and none of those attaches a secondary interface (hack/e2e-chainsaw/vminstance/vminstance.yamlsets onlyexternalMethod: PortList; worker VMs are pod-network only atnodegroup.yaml:209-211).
Caveats
- Vendored manifest fidelity is confirmed by reproduction, not by reading. Downloading the upstream v1.9.0 release asset and applying the Makefile's two transforms (
sed 's/namespace: kubevirt/namespace: cozy-kubevirt/g', then theawk -v RS="---" '!/kind: Namespace/'strip) produces a file byte-identical topackages/system/kubevirt-operator/templates/kubevirt-operator.yaml(diffexit 0, empty output). Every RBAC and CRD change in the diff is upstream's, not a hand edit, including theapps/controllerrevisionsrule becomingplugin.kubevirt.io/pluginsand thepatchverb leavingvirtualmachineinstances.controllerrevisionsstill appears in three other rules in the same file. - Feature-gate state diff, computed from the two registries rather than from the release notes. Parsing
RegisterFeatureGateinpkg/virt-config/featuregate/{active,inactive}.goat both tags and applying each version's Beta semantics to this chart's CR gives 21 gates that become effective on an existing cluster and none that stop:DeclarativeHotplugVolumes ExternalNetResourceInjection GPUsWithDRA HostDevicesWithDRA ImageVolume KubevirtSeccompProfile LibvirtHooksServerAndClient LiveUpdateNADRef MigrationPriorityQueue NodeRestriction OptOutRoleAggregation PanicDevices PasstBinding PersistentReservation PodSecondaryInterfaceNamingUpgrade RebootPolicy SecureExecution Snapshot VideoConfig VmiMemoryOverheadReport WorkloadEncryptionSEV. The remaining gates I did not chase individually. - The
Templateopt-out mechanism itself is correct.isFeatureGateEnabledInKvConfig(..., featuregate.Template)atpkg/virt-operator/util/config.go:198-203routes through the sameIsEnabledprecedence, sodisabledFeatureGates: [Template]does suppressVirtTemplateDeploymentEnabled. Keeping the gate listed is what preserves the VMI-levelremovevolumefallback. - Live-migration compatibility across the jump checks out.
rpm/repo-cs9.yamlpinsqemu-kvm-core-17__10.1.0-10.el9at v1.8.4 and10.1.0-20.el9at v1.9.0, and libvirt moves11.9.0-1.el9to11.10.0-12.el9. No QEMU major crossing, so the class behind kubevirt#16386 (still open,priority/critical-urgent) does not apply here.kubevirt/kubevirt#16890is genuinely in v1.9.0: its merge commit is an ancestor of the tag andpkg/virt-handler/device-manager/nvidia.gois present in the release tree, so thedocs/gpu-vgpu.mdrewrite is accurate. - Test non-vacuity was checked by mutation, not by reading the green run. Deleting the
disabledFeatureGatesinsert line frompackages/system/kubevirt/Makefileturnsupdate_idempotency_test.shred at the new case 5 (FAIL update_idempotency_test: make update exited non-zero on a template missing only disabledFeatureGates); replacing the static- Templatewith a{{- with }}block turns two of the seven helm-unittest cases red. Both mutations were reverted andgit statusis clean. - No upgrade coverage exists for an upgrade-shaped change. The suites
hack/select-e2e.shselects for this diff all install from the PR tree; there is no N-1 to N exercise, and a clean render says nothing about how the live CR converges. update_idempotency_test.sh:15-18exits 0 with a SKIP when GNU sed is absent, so on a stock macOS the whole suite reports success having run nothing. CI is unaffected, since thechecksjob runs on a Linux runner, but the skip is fail-open in a test whose entire job is guarding a self-heal contract.- The chart-lint
render_erroronpackages/system/kubevirtisvm-exportproxy-tlsroute.yaml:1failing onindex .Values._cluster "root-host". That is the runtime-injectedcozystack-valuesSecret, not a defect; supplying_clusterrenders every template cleanly. - Nothing here was applied to any cluster. Server-side admission, SSA field ownership on the live KubeVirt CR, and the actual behaviour of the virt-template window are out of scope for a static review.
Recommended follow-ups
- Replay 1.8.4 to 1.9.0 on a disposable dev cluster with a VPC-attached
VMInstancepresent, then live-migrate it, to close the second operational-risk item. - Consider stamping
disabledFeatureGates: [Template]onto the live CR from a numbered migration so virt-template is never deployed during the upgrade window. v1.8.4 accepts the field and the gate name, so the pre-seed is safe on the from-version. - Have the idempotency test render the repaired file through
helm templateaftermake update, so a mis-indented or mis-anchored reinsert fails the test instead of passing a grep count. - KubeVirt images in this package resolve straight to quay.io and are not routed through
images-registry. That is pre-existing and not fixable inside a byte-identical vendored manifest, but this release adds two image references no earlier cozystack version pulled, which is worth tracking for mirrored and air-gapped installs.

[MAJOR] the new disabledFeatureGates value has no path an operator can reach
This value is the only lever the PR gives anyone for the Beta gates 1.9.0 switches on, and the release note points at it for opting out of ImageVolume below Kubernetes 1.35. Nothing sets it.
grep -rn disabledFeatureGates packages/core/ returns no hits. packages/core/platform/templates/bundles/iaas.yaml:13-15,45,118-128 builds $kubevirtValues from four platform inputs (resources.cpuAllocationRatio, $gpuEnabled, gpu.permittedHostDevices, gpu.mediatedDevicesConfiguration), and there is no fifth, so the rendered Package cozystack.kubevirt carries only cpuAllocationRatio.
That leaves hand-patching the child Package, which docs/operations/backup-classes.md:221 rules out: such a patch is reverted whenever the platform helm-reconcile re-renders it. Same shape as #3333, where a documented backupStorage override reached nothing until the platform chart was taught to forward it.
Fix: forward it from platform values in the block that already forwards extraFeatureGates, for example {{- with .Values.kubevirt.disabledFeatureGates }}{{- $_ := set $kubevirtValues "disabledFeatureGates" . -}}{{- end -}}, plus a case in packages/core/platform/tests/bundles_gpu_kubevirt_wiring_test.yaml asserting the key lands on the emitted cozystack.kubevirt Package.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Right, the value was unreachable, and I took the forwarding fix rather than the documentation one. packages/core/platform/values.yaml now carries a documented kubevirt.disabledFeatureGates, and bundles/iaas.yaml sets it on $kubevirtValues, so it lands on the emitted cozystack.kubevirt Package as components.kubevirt.values.disabledFeatureGates.
Two deviations from your sketch, both deliberate. The forward sits next to the resources.cpuAllocationRatio one rather than in the gpu block, because it is independent of whether gpu-operator is enabled and the gpu block is skipped entirely when it is not. And the read is (.Values.kubevirt).disabledFeatureGates, not the bare dotted path: kubevirt: null in a values file makes Helm drop the key, and the bare walk then panics with nil pointer evaluating interface {}.disabledFeatureGates, the same trap the gpu block spells out at length. Three cases in tests/bundles_gpu_kubevirt_wiring_test.yaml cover it: key forwarded, key absent at platform defaults with the Package otherwise unchanged, and kubevirt: null still rendering.

[MAJOR] a gate can land in both featureGates and disabledFeatureGates, which KubeVirt rejects
This range appends into a list sitting right above the hardcoded seven-entry featureGates list below, and nothing checks whether a name shows up on both sides. --set disabledFeatureGates={HotplugVolumes} renders a CR carrying HotplugVolumes in both lists.
virt-operator refuses that object. pkg/virt-operator/webhooks/kubevirt-update-admitter.go:508-529 in v1.9.0 emits CauseTypeForbidden with feature gate "HotplugVolumes" exists on both "FeatureGates" and "DisabledFeatureGates", and kubevirt-update-validator.kubevirt.io runs with failurePolicy: Fail. The CRD schema permits it, so helm template and kubeconform both stay quiet.
The check is Update-only, and kubevirt-create-admitter.go:52 says so in a comment. A fresh install with the same values is admitted and the gate silently stays enabled, because IsEnabled puts explicit enable above explicit disable (pkg/virt-config/featuregate/feature-gates.go:431-454). Fresh-install CI cannot see this. It breaks on a cluster that already has a KubeVirt CR, and it takes the whole kubevirt HelmRelease down with it, so cpuAllocationRatio, permittedHostDevices and the virt-handler resource patch stop converging too.
Two ordinary inputs reach it. disabledFeatureGates: [HotplugVolumes] is the obvious first attempt after reading the PR description on that gate being deprecated. And extraFeatureGates: [Template] is the only way to undo the hardcoded opt-out on line 19.
Guard, verified on this chart:
{{- $staticGates := list "HotplugVolumes" "ExpandDisks" "LiveMigration" "AutoResourceLimitsGate" "CPUManager" "GPU" "VMExport" }}
{{- $enabledGates := concat $staticGates (.Values.extraFeatureGates | default list) }}
{{- range .Values.disabledFeatureGates }}
{{- if has . $enabledGates }}
{{- fail (printf "disabledFeatureGates: %q is also enabled via featureGates/extraFeatureGates; KubeVirt rejects a gate listed in both" .) }}
{{- end }}
{{- end }}
{{- if has "Template" (.Values.extraFeatureGates | default list) }}
{{- fail "extraFeatureGates: \"Template\" conflicts with the chart's static disabledFeatureGates entry" }}
{{- end }}
Both branches stop the render, and disabledFeatureGates: [ImageVolume] still renders. Render featureGates from $staticGates as well, so the guard and the rendered list cannot drift apart.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Fixed at render time. kubevirt-cr.yaml now builds the effective enabled set (the seven static gates plus extraFeatureGates) and the effective disabled set (the static opt-outs plus disabledFeatureGates) before the document, and calls fail on any name in both, naming the gate. Template carries its own message, because the chart pins it off and extraFeatureGates is the only way to ask for it back, which is exactly the shape KubeVirt refuses; there is no knob to re-enable virt-template and the message says so. A gate the chart enables statically gets its own message too, since only the disabledFeatureGates side is actionable there.
The install/upgrade split you traced is what makes render-time the right place: nothing downstream of it distinguishes the two, and on the install side nothing complains at all. One thing the guard deliberately does not do is reject a name repeated inside one list. validateFeatureGates walks featureGates and looks each name up in disabledFeatureGates and checks nothing else, and both fields are x-kubernetes-list-type: atomic in the CRD, so disabledFeatureGates: [Template] is a CR KubeVirt accepts and refusing it here would take away a working configuration. What the render does instead is skip it: the chart writes its static opt-outs itself (Template, ExternalNetResourceInjection, and ImageVolume below Kubernetes 1.35), so a values file that names one of them again gets one entry rather than two. The cases in tests/kubevirt_cr_test.yaml cover this ground: one per gate the chart enables, so a name dropped from the guard's copy of that list turns exactly one of them red, plus the message for each static opt-out, the extraFeatureGates/disabledFeatureGates collision, the disjoint render, the version boundary on both sides, and the cases that pin what a repeated static opt-out renders.

Verdict
LGTM
Both blocking findings from the previous round are closed, and I re-verified them by running things rather than by reading the new commits.
What I checked on the current head
disabledFeatureGates now reaches the chart. Rendering the platform chart with the key set puts it on the emitted cozystack.kubevirt Package; rendering at the defaults leaves it out and does not trip on the nil walk. Deleting the forwarding hop from bundles/iaas.yaml turns the suite red (1 failed, 141 passed), so the new case is not vacuous. The operator-facing path holds up too: spec.components.platform.values.* on the cozystack.cozystack-platform Package is the same contract backupStorage and docs/vm-external-vlan.md already use.
The overlap guard behaves across eleven corners, on both sides of the 1.35 boundary. disabledFeatureGates: [HotplugVolumes], extraFeatureGates: [Template], extraFeatureGates: [ExternalNetResourceInjection] and extraFeatureGates: [ImageVolume] below 1.35 all stop the render with three distinct messages that name what to do. [ImageVolume] at 1.36, [Snapshot], and a redundant [Template] all render, the last one deduped to a single entry.
The two new pins check out against upstream. install/strategy.go:517 calls rbac.GetAllController(ns, !config.ExternalNetResourceInjectionEnabled()), and newControllerClusterRole adds the network-attachment-definitions rule exactly when that argument is true, so pinning the gate off keeps virt-controller's NAD permission rather than removing it. For ImageVolume the threshold is right on the nose: Kubernetes registers it Beta with Default: false from 1.33 and Default: true from 1.35.
.Capabilities.KubeVersion.Version was worth testing here, because this repo already got burned by using it raw (see the linstor-scheduler patch and its v1.31.0+k3s1 note). I ran the boundary against 1.34.0, 1.35.0, v1.34.1+k3s1, v1.35.0+k3s1, v1.34.1-gke.1234, v1.35.0-eks-abc123, v1.36.2 and v1.33.12. All eight classify correctly; the -0 in the constraint is carrying its weight.
No upgrade-ordering window on the CR write itself. v1.8.4 has both new gate names registered as Beta, and its validateFeatureGates only checks the cross-list case, so an older operator accepts the new CR rather than rejecting it.
The self-heal contract got stricter and the strictness is real. Dropping - ExternalNetResourceInjection from the CR makes make update exit non-zero naming that marker and its consequence; dropping the $staticFeatureGates header fails the render outright and reds all 26 cases. Removing a gate from either static list reds the suite, which is what makes the admitted duplication safe. Guard tests assert the exact error strings, not just that rendering failed.
I also reproduced the vendored manifest independently instead of taking the earlier round's word for it: the upstream v1.9.0 asset plus the two documented transforms gives a file byte-identical to the one in tree, 496708 bytes on both sides, empty diff. Suites are green at 142/142 and 26/26, and both charts render and pass kubeconform at 1.34 and 1.36.
Non-blocking notes
- The upgrade window is three gates wide, not one.
Template,ExternalNetResourceInjectionandImageVolumeare all Beta and therefore on by default in 1.9.0, and the CR that pins them is applied only afterkubevirt-operatorreports Ready. Two of the three look harmless in practice: withExternalNetResourceInjectionon,template.go:427-434just leaves the resource map nil without erroring, and the platform's NADs carry nok8s.v1.cni.cncf.io/resourceNamefor anything to inject;ImageVolumeonly bites a containerDisk VM started inside the window on a cluster below 1.35, and no shipped chart uses containerDisk.Templateis the one already observed in the PR description. A migration that stampsdisabledFeatureGatesonto the live CR before the package upgrade would close all three, and v1.8.4 accepts every one of those names. docs/gpu-vgpu.md:358still boots its sample VM from a containerDisk with no note about the ImageVolume path. Much smaller than it was, since the version pin covers everything below 1.35 and the opt-out is now reachable, but the line is still there.PodSecondaryInterfaceNamingUpgradestays default-on and unexercised, so live migration of a VM with a VPC secondary interface is still the one shape worth a real cluster.update_idempotency_test.shexits 0 with a SKIP when GNU sed is missing. It is wired into CI through the packagetest:target and runs for real on the Linux runner, so this only costs a silent pass locally, but I did hit it: my first run reported success having executed nothing.
Scope of this review
Static and local only. No cluster was touched, so server-side admission, SSA field ownership on the live KubeVirt CR, the real duration of the upgrade window, and live migration across the gate flips are all unverified here. Worth a replay from 1.8.4 to 1.9.0 on a disposable cluster with a VPC-attached VM before this rides a release.

NOT LGTM — one blocker, and it is in the commit trailers, not the code. The code itself is correct, verified against upstream v1.9.0 sources, and well covered by tests.
🔴 Blocker (provenance)
All four commits carry the trailer Assisted-By: Claude <[email protected]>. That violates the repository rule (AGENTS.md: do not credit an AI model or its vendor by name in a commit trailer) — the format must be exactly Assisted-by: LLM. DCO does not catch this because it only checks Signed-off-by. Reword the trailers on all four commits via rebase before merge.
✅ Verified ground-truth (against v1.9.0 sources, not the PR description)
Every named feature gate exists in v1.9.0 and the logic is correct — checked against pkg/virt-config/featuregate/{active,inactive}[email protected]:
ExpandDisks,LiveMigration,AutoResourceLimitsGate,GPU,VMExport— GA, so listing them is inert and allowed.HotplugVolumes— Deprecated in v1.9.0 but still registered; the update admitter only warns on it, it does not reject.CPUManager— Alpha, not GA: the line is load-bearing and the gate must be listed (the PR description silently skips it in the GA analysis — worth a one-line note so a future bump does not mistake it for a droppable GA gate).Template,ExternalNetResourceInjection,ImageVolume— all Beta, valid to disable.
The guard's premise is confirmed in pkg/virt-operator/webhooks/[email protected]: validateFeatureGates emits Forbidden when a gate appears in both lists (it compares the whole lists, so a name repeated inside one list is not caught — exactly as claimed about atomic lists); warnDeprecatedFeatureGates only warns; ValidateFeatureGates does not reject a GA/deprecated gate that is listed. The guard has no false negatives: $enabledGates/$disabledGates are supersets of the actually-rendered lists, so any overlap upstream would reject is caught at render time.
Tests run locally: helm unittest packages/system/kubevirt → 26/26, helm unittest packages/core/platform → 142/142 (including the new wiring test and the nil-safe kubevirt: null case). CI is green, the API-owner gate passes, DCO passes. update_idempotency_test.sh did not run in my environment (needs GNU sed), but it is non-destructive and the logic is coherent.
Genuine improvements: mkdir -p templates instead of rm -rf templates in the operator Makefile really does preserve the local prometheusrule.yaml that was being wiped on every make update; the docs fix removes the false claim that a hand-crafted Package CR takes precedence over the bundle and correctly requires bundles.disabledPackages.
🟡 Minor (non-blocking)
packages/core/platform/templates/bundles/iaas.yaml: withkubevirt.disabledFeatureGates: [HostDevices]andgpu-operatorenabled, the bundle forwardsHostDevicesinto bothextraFeatureGates(injected) anddisabledFeatureGates→ the guard fails closed with the generic message "remove it from extraFeatureGates or from disabledFeatureGates", even though the operator cannot touch the platform-injectedextraFeatureGates. The real levers are removing the gate fromkubevirt.disabledFeatureGatesor disabling gpu-operator. Niche (disabling HostDevices while running a GPU is self-contradictory), and the PR description calls it out honestly.- nit: add a line to the description/commit about
CPUManager(Alpha, load-bearing line).
Refetches the vendored operator manifest from the v1.9.0 release. The release turns every Beta feature gate on by default and adds disabledFeatureGates for opting out; the KubeVirt CR side of that lands separately. The virt-launcher QEMU build moves with the bump — el9 qemu-kvm 10.1.0-10 to 10.1.0-20 — and that is the thing to check before moving the release pin, rather than a QEMU major: kubevirt/kubevirt#16386 lost live migration for every running VM on 1.6.2 to 1.7.0, one build apart within the same QEMU version, on virtio feature bits the target launcher would not accept. VMs running on the 1.8.4 launcher were migrated onto the 1.9.0 one on a three-node test cluster before this bump. The update target now carries the check as a note above the pin. make update used to wipe templates/ before fetching, which also removed the local PrometheusRule template; it now only overwrites the file it fetches. …annot carry KubeVirt 1.9 changes what an unlisted Beta gate means. On 1.8 isFeatureGateEnabled ended in `return false`; on 1.9 IsEnabled ends in `return fg.State == Beta`. Sixteen gates are Beta at 1.9.0 and none of them is in this chart's featureGates list, so all sixteen arrive on with the bump. The CR writes three of them back into disabledFeatureGates. Template deploys the virt-template aggregated API server: two Deployments, two APIServices, a webhook and a ValidatingAdmissionPolicy that nothing on the platform uses, and one more aggregated API to break discovery. Upstream also has spec.configuration.virtTemplateDeployment, but it reads TemplateEnabled() first, so it stops the deployment and leaves the gate and its API on; the gate stops both. ExternalNetResourceInjection makes virt-controller skip multus.NetworkToResource, so a NetworkAttachmentDefinition's k8s.v1.cni.cncf.io/resourceName no longer becomes a resource request on the launcher pod. That is right for a cluster running a network-resources-injector, which this platform does not deploy: with the gate on, a VM on an SR-IOV network schedules without its device. ImageVolume is the one that depends on the host, so it is disabled by cluster version rather than always. With it on, virt-controller drops the containerDisk sidecars and mounts the image as a VolumeSource.Image volume. Kubernetes has its own ImageVolume gate, off by default until 1.35, and an apiserver with it off strips every image volume and the mounts referencing it — dropImageVolumes in pkg/api/pod/util.go — so the launcher pod is admitted without the disk it needs and fails looking for it. KubeVirt has no capability check to notice. The management cluster is supported from 1.33, so below 1.35 the chart keeps the gate off and the sidecar path in use, and from 1.35 leaves it alone. The rest of the Beta set stays on, but a cluster may be unable to carry a given gate. A disabledFeatureGates list in the chart values appends to the static opt-outs for that case, and naming a static opt-out again renders one entry, since the operator writing down what their cluster declines has no reason to know the chart already disables it. A gate named in both lists is not a configuration KubeVirt honours, and it fails differently depending on when it lands. The update validator refuses the write and runs with failurePolicy Fail, so on a cluster that already has the CR the HelmRelease stops converging with every other field in it. The create admitter validates nothing and virt-config reads featureGates before disabledFeatureGates, so a fresh install is admitted and the gate stays on while the values file says it is off. The template stops the render and names the gate instead. The guard reads the same version-conditional list as the render, so extraFeatureGates may ask for ImageVolume exactly where the chart is not disabling it. Which list the colliding gate came from decides what the operator can do about it, so the message splits three ways: Template is pinned off and cannot be asked back, a gate the chart enables cannot be switched off from values at all, and anything else arrived through extraFeatureGates and can leave from either side. HotplugVolumes carries a note now. It is deprecated at 1.9 in favour of DeclarativeHotplugVolumes, but virt-api accepts kubevirt-csi's VMI-level removevolume on a VM-owned VMI only while the gate is on, so tenant volume detach depends on the pin, and the pin in turn keeps the newly default-on DeclarativeHotplugVolumes inert. The update target's header stops describing the two lists as curated defaults and says to check them against the pinned release's featuregate registrations at each bump, since a gate that reached GA is enabled whether the CR names it or not. make update grows a marker per line of the new block. Every insert in that target is guarded by one directive it also inserts, so a hand-merge that keeps the directive and drops a sibling line leaves the guard satisfied, the insert skipped and the render green. The three static entries are the only lines these inserts add that are CR content in their own right rather than a wrapper around a value: their absence cannot surface as a value that stopped taking effect, the CR simply goes back to deploying virt-template, to letting KubeVirt skip NAD resource injection, and to image volumes an apiserver below 1.35 discards. The target cannot rebuild a partial block, so it names the missing marker and stops. The block it does rebuild is compared against the committed one byte for byte, because the insert text and the template are two copies of the same lines and only one of them renders. The tail also greps for the guard header the block's skip reads, which no insert restores: losing it makes the template unrenderable, and that is the one hand-merge loss the tail would otherwise wave through. The suite states the cluster version instead of inheriting the test plugin's default, which is unstated and below 1.35, and pins both sides of the boundary. Two places also said a hand-crafted Package CR takes precedence over the bundle render. It does not: the platform chart is the only writer of those Packages, helm.sh/resource-policy: keep blocks deletion and not replacement, so the next render puts the bundle's spec back. Both now say the name has to be in bundles.disabledPackages. Assisted-by: LLM Signed-off-by: Aleksei Sviridkin <[email protected]>
The kubevirt chart reads disabledFeatureGates from its own values, and the iaas bundle is the only writer of the cozystack.kubevirt Package, so nothing could set it: a Package patched by hand is reverted the next time the platform re-renders it. Platform values gain a documented kubevirt.disabledFeatureGates list, forwarded into the emitted Package as components.kubevirt.values.disabledFeatureGates alongside the entries derived from resources.cpuAllocationRatio and the gpu block. The parenthesized value walk is nil-safe, matching the gpu block, so a cluster that nulls out the whole kubevirt key still renders. LGTM — approving, with non-blocking recommendations.
This is a careful, well-decomposed update: a vendored operator bump, the feature-gate logic, docs, and the platform forward each land in their own commit, and the PR body is candid about every sharp edge it leaves. I verified the load-bearing claims by running them rather than by reading.
What I ran and confirmed: helm unittest is green for kubevirt (26/26) and the platform chart (142/142); update_idempotency_test.sh passes all 11 cases under a real GNU sed, including case 6, which diffs the block make update rebuilds against the committed template byte for byte. The suite is non-vacuous — dropping VMExport from the guard's $staticFeatureGates copy turns exactly one test red, so the per-gate coverage is real. The two static copies in kubevirt-cr.yaml match the literal lists rendered below them one-to-one, the name-keyed dedup holds, and the <1.35-0 semver boundary renders the ImageVolume branch correctly on both sides. The mkdir -p change genuinely preserves the local prometheusrule.yaml the old rm -rf templates would have deleted, and the docs correction is accurate: the iaas bundle is the unconditional writer of the cozystack.kubevirt Package, so a hand-crafted CR really is overwritten on the next render unless its name is in bundles.disabledPackages.
Hypotheses I checked and dropped: disabledFeatureGates already existed in the 1.8.4 CRD, so there is no CRD/CR skew on upgrade; the nil-safe (.Values.kubevirt).disabledFeatureGates walk does not panic when kubevirt is null; and the semver boundary tolerates real KubeVersion.Version build-metadata and pre-release suffixes.
Every failure path here is fail-closed with the offending gate named, and the default path (empty list, or GPU wiring without a contradictory opt-out) renders cleanly. None of the findings below introduce a silent regression or a broken default. They are all recommendations.

[MINOR] Cross-layer gate collision surfaces one layer below where it is configured
This forward writes disabledFeatureGates into the emitted cozystack.kubevirt Package without checking it against the extraFeatureGates the GPU wiring injects a few lines down (set $kubevirtValues "extraFeatureGates" (list "HostDevices")). Set kubevirt.disabledFeatureGates: [HostDevices] in platform values with cozystack.gpu-operator in enabledPackages, and the platform renders the Package fine with HostDevices in both lists. The guard that rejects that combination lives in the child kubevirt chart, so the failure only appears once the Package becomes a HelmRelease — as a stalled cozy-kubevirt HelmRelease whose message names extraFeatureGates, a lever that does not exist in platform values.
This is fail-closed with the gate named, and the config is self-contradictory (you cannot disable HostDevices and run the operator that needs it), which is why it is a recommendation rather than a blocker. A guard at the iaas-bundle layer with a platform-appropriate message — or a line in the docs — would diagnose it where the operator actually set it. (Raised independently by both review passes.)

[MINOR] Generic overlap message offers an unreachable fix for the static opt-outs
When the collision comes from extraFeatureGates naming a static opt-out that is not Template — ExternalNetResourceInjection always, ImageVolume below 1.35 — the render lands in this branch: "remove it from extraFeatureGates or from disabledFeatureGates." The second option is unreachable: the gate is hard-coded in $staticDisabledFeatureGates, not in the operator's .Values.disabledFeatureGates, so there is nothing to remove there. The first option (remove from extraFeatureGates) is correct and present, so the message stays actionable — this is a wording nit, not a dead end. For a non-Template static opt-out, a message naming only extraFeatureGates would avoid pointing at a list the operator did not touch.

[NIT] Guard copies stay in sync by discipline, not by construction
$staticFeatureGates / $staticDisabledFeatureGates must match the literal lists rendered below them, and today they do — I confirmed all nine names line up, and the per-gate tests catch a name dropped from a copy. But the sync rests on a human plus a memo in the tests, not on the template deriving one list from the other. A future PR that adds or renames a gate in one place without the paired test silently opens a hole in the guard. Acknowledged in the PR body (the copy exists for the make update - VMExport anchor); closing the add-direction is a fair follow-up. Fine as-is.
Adds a `KubeVirt` section to the `next` platform-package page with one row, `kubevirt.disabledFeatureGates`. The key arrives with cozystack/cozystack#4015, which moves KubeVirt to 1.9. That release turns every Beta feature gate on by default; the platform switches three of them off on its own (`Template`, `ExternalNetResourceInjection`, and `ImageVolume` on Kubernetes older than 1.35), and this list is how an operator adds to that on a cluster that cannot carry a gate, for example `ImageVolume` on a container runtime without image volume support. The row also says that a gate the platform enables cannot be switched off from here, because the chart stops the render and names the gate. Lands after cozystack/cozystack#4015: the key does not exist on the platform before that merges, so the two go in that order.
What this PR does
KubeVirt operator manifest goes from v1.8.4 to v1.9.0. The 1.9 release turns every Beta feature gate on by default and adds
disabledFeatureGatesto the CR for opting out, so the CR side needed a few decisions.Templateis disabled. With it on, virt-operator deploys virt-template: two Deployments, two APIServices, a webhook and a ValidatingAdmissionPolicy that nothing here uses. One more aggregated API server is one more way to break discovery. This one is not a knob.- Templateis written into the CR unconditionally and there is no value that takes it back out, because nothing on the platform uses VirtualMachineTemplate; if something starts to, the static entry becomes a value then. Asking for it throughextraFeatureGatesis refused at render time with an error that says so, rather than producing a CR KubeVirt would reject.ImageVolumeis the host-dependent one: off below Kubernetes 1.35, left on from 1.35, with a platform value for runtimes that cannot serve image volumes even there (#3190 has the k3s case). Nothing the platform ships uses containerDisk. The value iskubevirt.disabledFeatureGateson the platform values, which the iaas bundle forwards into the emittedcozystack.kubevirtPackage ascomponents.kubevirt.values.disabledFeatureGates:Closes #3190.
The chart refuses to render a CR that names one gate in both lists. KubeVirt's
kubevirt-update-validator.kubevirt.iowebhook rejects that combination and runs withfailurePolicy: Fail, so on a cluster that already has the CR the write is refused and thekubevirtHelmRelease stops converging with everything else the CR carries. The create admitter runs no validation at all (its own comment says the update validator is where that happens, and it only gets installed after the CR exists), andIsEnabledin virt-config checksFeatureGatesbeforeDisabledFeatureGates, so on a fresh install the same CR is admitted and the gate silently stays on. Render-time is the only place left where an operator gets told.A name repeated inside one list is not an error: upstream compares the two lists against each other, and both fields are
x-kubernetes-list-type: atomicin the CRD, so that CR is accepted and the guard stays quiet. The gates the chart pins off can arrive a second time from a supported values file, since the chart writes them itself and an operator listing the gates their cluster declines has no reason to know that, so the range skips them and the CR states each opt-out once. The guard walks its own copy of the seven gates the chart enables. That copy exists because the rendered list has to stay a literal list formake updateto find its- VMExportanchor, and a gate quietly dropped from the copy would keep rendering underfeatureGateswhile leaving the guard. The suite carries one case per gate, so removing any single name turns exactly one of the seven red.HotplugVolumesstays in the list even though 1.9 deprecates it. A deprecated gate listed in the CR is still enabled, and while it is enabled virt-controller skips the declarative hotplug path. Dropping it would switch on declarative hotplug, but then virt-api rejects the VMI-levelremovevolumesubresource on VM-owned VMIs, and kubevirt-csi uses that as a fallback during teardown. The CSI driver has to move off that subresource first. Upstream names no removal release for it: theDeprecatedstate's own doc comment says "discontinued in the following release", butMultiArchitectureandDisableMDEVConfigurationhave been deprecated since 1.8.0 and are still registered at 1.9.0, so that is a direction rather than a date.What makes that opt-out list matter is a semantics change: on 1.8
isFeatureGateEnabledended inreturn false, so a Beta gate nobody listed was off; on 1.9IsEnabledends inreturn fg.State == Beta. Sixteen gates are Beta at v1.9.0 and none of them is in this chart'sfeatureGates, so all sixteen arrive on with the bump. Two are switched back off here, one is switched off below Kubernetes 1.35, and I went through the rest:Template: off. Reason above.ExternalNetResourceInjection: off. With it on, virt-controller stops callingmultus.NetworkToResource, so a NAD'sk8s.v1.cni.cncf.io/resourceNameno longer becomes a resource request on the launcher pod. That is correct for clusters running a network-resources-injector; this platform ships none, so a VM on an SR-IOV NAD would schedule without its device.ImageVolume: off below Kubernetes 1.35, left alone from 1.35 on. KubeVirt renders containerDisk images asVolumeSource.Imagevolumes when the gate is on, and it does not check the host:dropImageVolumesin the apiserver strips every image volume and the mounts referencing it while Kubernetes' ownImageVolumegate is off, which is the default until 1.35 (kube_features.gohas itDefault: falseat 1.31 and 1.33). The pod is admitted without the disk and virt-launcher fails looking for it. The management cluster is supported from 1.33, so on 1.33 and 1.34 the chart keeps the KubeVirt gate off and the containerDisk sidecar path in use; from 1.35 the gate stands andextraFeatureGatescan name it. The apiserver version is a proxy for a runtime capability, not the capability itself, so a cluster at 1.35 or newer whose container runtime cannot serve image volumes (the k3s case in Bumping platform KubeVirt to ≥1.9 will break containerDisk VMs on non-Talos (k3s) bundles (default-on ImageVolume) #3190) switches the gate off throughkubevirt.disabledFeatureGates; that is what the value is for.Snapshot: on.VirtualMachineSnapshotneeded the gate listed on 1.8; snapshot and export were exercised on the test cluster.DeclarativeHotplugVolumes: on and inert.handleDeclarativeVolumeHotplugreturns early whileHotplugVolumesis enabled, which this chart still does.GPUsWithDRA,HostDevicesWithDRA: on; each only lets a VMI request a DRA-provisioned device, and nothing here creates one.WorkloadEncryptionSEV: on; needs SEV hardware and a VM that asks for it.PasstBinding: on; needs a VM using the passt binding.RebootPolicy: on; adds a field on the VMI domain spec, unset means the old behaviour.VmiMemoryOverheadReport: on; fillsstatus.memory.memoryOverhead, reporting only.OptOutRoleAggregation: on; it enables theRoleAggregationStrategyfield, and aggregation stops only for a CR that sets it toManual. This one does not.KubevirtSeccompProfile: on; installs the profile, and a workload uses it only whereseccompConfigurationsays so.NodeRestriction: on; virt-handler node authorization, needs the KubernetesServiceAccountTokenPodNodeInfogate, GA since 1.32.LibvirtHooksServerAndClient: on; pre-migration hooks on the target launcher, and no hooks ship here.PodSecondaryInterfaceNamingUpgrade: flips on; it adds--upgrade-ordinal-ifacesto virt-launcher and a pre-migration hook that renames the ordinal secondary interfaces of VMs still carrying them. The test cluster's migrations exercised that path.Five of the seven gates the chart enables (
ExpandDisks,LiveMigration,AutoResourceLimitsGate,GPU,VMExport) reached GA by 1.9 and are inert:IsEnabledreturns true for a GA gate whether or not the CR names it. I left the list as it is; dropping the five is a follow-up, because it changes what the CR says without changing what the cluster does and it belongs in its own commit. The other two are not droppable:CPUManageris still Alpha in 1.9 and is off unless listed, andHotplugVolumesis the deprecated one discussed above.QEMU is 10.1.0 on both sides of this jump; the el9 build revision moves from -10 to -20 and libvirt goes 11.9 to 11.10. A moving build revision is the thing to check rather than a major: kubevirt/kubevirt#16386, where every existing VM lost live migration, was 1.6.2 to 1.7.0 on qemu-kvm 9.1.0-19 to 9.1.0-20, one build apart within the same QEMU version. So I tested it: VMs running on the 1.8.4 launcher live-migrated onto the 1.9.0 one on a three-node cluster.
make updateinkubevirt-operatorused torm -rf templatesbefore the fetch and took the local PrometheusRule template with it. Now it only overwrites the file it downloads.make updateinkubevirtnow greps for every line of the new block before it passes: the range directive, thedisabledFeatureGates:key, the three static entries, and the guard header that decides which static entries render. Every insert in that target is guarded by one directive it also inserts, so a hand-merge that keeps the directive and drops a sibling line leaves the guard satisfied and the insert skipped. That shape covers the directive and nothing else. What makes it worth a grep per line here is the static entries: they are the only lines those inserts add that are CR content in their own right rather than a wrapper around a value, so they render on every install and their absence cannot surface as a value that stopped taking effect. The CR just goes back to deploying virt-template and to letting KubeVirt skip NAD resource injection. The target cannot rebuild a partial block, so it names the missing line and stops. The payload lines of the other four blocks are exposed the same way; I checked, and both dropping- {{ . }}from theextraFeatureGatesrange and dropping thepermittedHostDevices:key from itswithrender green and lose the operator's values. That is a wider change than this PR and I left it out.Two sharp edges I know about and left.
kubevirt.disabledFeatureGates: [HostDevices]on a cluster that also hascozystack.gpu-operatorinenabledPackagesmakes the bundle forward the same gate into both lists, and the platform renders fine while the child kubevirt HelmRelease then stops on the guard: fail-closed, with the gate named, but diagnosed one level below where it was configured. And the version-conditional opt-out is evaluated at render time, so a cluster upgraded from 1.34 to 1.35 keepsImageVolumedisabled until something re-renders the chart; the direction is the safe one, since the gate stays off and containerDisk keeps the path it had on 1.8.4.Two things I decided against doing here. The guard's copy of the gate list is pinned against a name being dropped, not against a name being added to the rendered list only; the copy exists because
make updateneeds the literal- VMExportanchor, so closing the other direction means changing the self-heal contract. Andhack/run-kubernetes-block-io_test.batsstill names avirt-launcher:v1.8.4image in a fixture: inert, the test matches on the container name, and the file is outside this change.Tested on a three-node Talos v1.13.6 / Kubernetes v1.36.2 cluster with Flux suspended. The upgrade took about ten minutes. virt-operator had already deployed virt-template before the CR change landed and removed it afterwards, CRDs included. Two VMs started on the 1.8.4 launcher, one DataVolume-backed and one containerDisk-backed, live-migrated to the 1.9.0 launcher. VMDisk plus VMInstance through the apps API boots.
