NOT LGTM
Verdict
NOT LGTM. Two unit tests in the repo's own lane go red on this branch, and the backup Job's shell swallows the failure of the one command the whole backup depends on, so a Kafka cluster that cannot be reached produces a zero-byte "backup" that the controller records as Succeeded.
Findings
[CRITICAL] packages/system/backupstrategy-controller/templates/strategy-kafka-default.yaml:94, topic listing fails open and produces an empty backup reported as success
94: topics=$("${BIN}"/kafka-topics.sh --bootstrap-server "${BOOTSTRAP}" --list | grep -v '^__' || true)
79: set -eu
There is no set -o pipefail, and the || true swallows what is left. Two independent mechanisms turn a failed --list into an empty string: the pipeline reports grep's status, not the CLI's, and || true erases even that. When kafka-topics.sh cannot reach the bootstrap listener (broker rolling, listener config drift, DNS not yet resolvable, an AuthenticationException), topics is empty, the for loop body never runs, and line 106 uploads the zero-byte file created at line 92. The Job exits 0, so jobConditionState reports JobComplete, createKafkaBackupArtifact writes a Backup with status.phase=Ready plus an artifact.uri, and the BackupJob flips to Succeeded with Ready=True, reason=BackupCompleted. Every operator-visible signal says the backup worked. Restoring from that object later downloads an empty file, the while read loop does nothing, and the RestoreJob also reports Succeeded. The failure is discovered at recovery time, which is the one moment it cannot be recovered from.
A genuinely empty topic list is a legal state and presumably why || true is there, so the fix has to separate "no user topics" from "could not ask". The interpreter is /usr/bin/bash (line 76), so pipefail is available:
set -euo pipefail
if ! all=$("${BIN}"/kafka-topics.sh --bootstrap-server "${BOOTSTRAP}" --list --exclude-internal); then
echo "cannot list topics on ${BOOTSTRAP}" >&2
exit 1
fi
topics=$(printf '%s\n' "${all}" | grep -v '^__' || true) # empty is legitimate only here--exclude-internal also replaces the grep -v '^__' heuristic with the flag Kafka provides for the job. Pair the fix with a negative fixture that drives the export against an unreachable bootstrap and asserts a non-zero exit, otherwise nothing holds it.
[MAJOR] packages/system/backupstrategy-controller/templates/strategy-kafka-default.yaml:99-103, head -1 masks a per-topic describe failure and writes a corrupt record
99: line=$("${BIN}"/kafka-topics.sh --bootstrap-server "${BOOTSTRAP}" --describe --topic "${t}" | head -1)
100: parts=$(printf '%s' "${line}" | grep -oE 'PartitionCount: [0-9]+' | awk '{print $2}')
103: printf '%s\t%s\t%s\t%s\n' "${t}" "${parts}" "${rf}" "${cfg}" >> /tmp/kafka-metadata.txt
Same root cause as the finding above, one layer down. The pipeline's status is head's, which is always 0, and the grep | awk pipelines end in awk, which also succeeds on empty input. A --describe that times out for one topic therefore writes the record orders\t\t\t and the loop carries on. The backup still reports Succeeded. The damage surfaces only on restore, where --partitions "" makes kafka-topics.sh exit non-zero, set -e aborts, and the RestoreJob fails with a Kafka CLI parse error that names nothing about the corrupt backup. Fix by checking the describe call's own status and validating the parsed fields before writing the record:
if ! desc=$("${BIN}"/kafka-topics.sh --bootstrap-server "${BOOTSTRAP}" --describe --topic "${t}"); then
echo "cannot describe topic ${t}" >&2; exit 1
fi
line=$(printf '%s\n' "${desc}" | head -1)
parts=$(printf '%s' "${line}" | grep -oE 'PartitionCount: [0-9]+' | awk '{print $2}')
rf=$(printf '%s' "${line}" | grep -oE 'ReplicationFactor: [0-9]+' | awk '{print $2}')
[ -n "${parts}" ] && [ -n "${rf}" ] || { echo "unparsable describe output for ${t}: ${line}" >&2; exit 1; }[MAJOR] hack/e2e-chainsaw/kafka-metadata/chainsaw-test.yaml, the new suite has no PackageSource mapping, which turns two unit tests red
Adding a Chainsaw suite directory obliges both selector scripts to know about it. hack/select-install.sh:74 (suite_to_source) resolves a suite name through explicit cases and then cozystack.<suite>-application / cozystack.<suite>, none of which matches kafka-metadata, and hack/select-e2e.sh:228 (src_to_suites) maps kafka-application to the single suite kafka. Both scripts carry comments stating that the round trip is load-bearing and pinned by tests, and both tests fail on this branch:
$ bash hack/cozytest.sh hack/select-install_test.bats
╭ » Run test: validate passes on the real source graph and suite mapping
┊ hack/select-install.sh --validate
┊ select-install: suite 'kafka-metadata' has no PackageSource mapping (add it to suite_to_source)
╰ ❌ Test failed: validate passes on the real source graph and suite mapping (exit 1)
$ bash hack/cozytest.sh hack/select-e2e_test.bats
╰ ❌ Test failed: a CNI change selects every suite the graph can reach (exit 1)
want: ... harbor kafka kafka-metadata kubernetes-latest ...
got: ... harbor kafka kubernetes-latest ...
Both live in BATS_UNIT_FILES (root Makefile:161), so make bats-unit-tests is red. Beyond CI, the unmapped suite is unreachable from its own package: an edit to packages/apps/kafka or packages/system/kafka-operator selects kafka and never kafka-metadata, which is the exact #3665 regression the round-trip guard exists to prevent. Fix:
# hack/select-install.sh, suite_to_source()
kafka-metadata) echo cozystack.kafka-application ; return ;;
# hack/select-e2e.sh, src_to_suites()
kafka-application) echo "kafka kafka-metadata" ;;[MAJOR] packages/system/backupstrategy-controller/templates/strategy-kafka-default.yaml:117, a comma-valued topic config breaks the restore and aborts it partway
117: --entity-type topics --entity-name "${t}" --add-config "${cfg}"
The two Kafka CLIs disagree about how a config list is encoded, and the strategy pipes one straight into the other. On the export side TopicCommand builds the summary line with config.entries().stream().filter(config -> !config.isDefault()).map(ce -> ce.name() + "=" + ce.value()).collect(Collectors.joining(",")), so a value that itself contains a comma is emitted unbracketed. On the import side ConfigCommand documents --add-config as "Key Value pairs of configs to add. Square brackets can be used to group values which contain commas: 'k1=v1,k2=[v1,v2,v2],k3=v3'" and splits with .split("," + "(?=[^\\]]*(?:\\[|$))"), then requires every token to be key=val.
So a topic configured cleanup.policy=compact,delete, which is a standard Kafka setting and one the README advertises support for ("non-default topic configs (retention, compaction, min.insync.replicas, ...)"), backs up as the record orders 3 3 cleanup.policy=compact,delete and restores as --add-config cleanup.policy=compact,delete. That splits into cleanup.policy=compact and delete, the second fails the key=val requirement, kafka-configs.sh exits non-zero, and set -eu aborts the loop. The same happens for follower.replication.throttled.replicas=0:1,1:2, which partition reassignment sets without anyone asking for it. Because the abort happens mid-loop, every topic after the failing one is silently skipped, so the target is left partially restored behind a Failed RestoreJob with no record of how far it got.
Minimum fix is to bracket each value on the way back in, splitting on the ,<key>= boundary rather than on every comma:
if [ -n "${cfg}" ]; then
printf '%s' "${cfg}" | sed -E 's/,([A-Za-z0-9._-]+=)/\n\1/g' | while IFS= read -r kv; do
"${BIN}"/kafka-configs.sh --bootstrap-server "${BOOTSTRAP}" --alter \
--entity-type topics --entity-name "${t}" --add-config "${kv%%=*}=[${kv#*=}]"
done
fiThe deeper problem is that the on-disk format is scraped human-readable CLI output. A retention.ms sentinel is the one config value that happens to survive it, which is why the e2e passes. Add a fixture whose topic carries cleanup.policy=compact,delete before trusting the round trip.
[MAJOR] packages/system/backupstrategy-controller/templates/strategy-kafka-default.yaml:113, --if-not-exists makes a partition or replication-factor divergence a silent no-op
113: "${BIN}"/kafka-topics.sh --bootstrap-server "${BOOTSTRAP}" --create --if-not-exists \
114: --topic "${t}" --partitions "${parts}" --replication-factor "${rf}"
Upstream TopicCommand.createTopic handles the flag by swallowing the exception: if (!(e.getCause() instanceof TopicExistsException && topic.ifTopicDoesntExist())) { throw (Exception) e.getCause(); }, and the option is documented as "if set when creating topics, the action will only execute if the topic does not already exist". Nothing compares the live shape against the backup.
Scenario: orders is backed up at 3 partitions, someone later raises it to 12, and an operator runs an in-place restore to get back to the recorded state. The restore Job creates nothing, re-applies the old configs, and the RestoreJob reports Succeeded with Ready=True, reason=RestoreCompleted. orders still has 12 partitions. The operator's only signal says the restore matched the backup, and it did not. The docs and 25-restorejob-in-place.yaml describe the restore as additive at the topic level, which a reader will not read as "an existing topic's partition count is ignored without comment".
Kafka cannot decrease partitions, so the correct behaviour is to detect the divergence and surface it rather than to hide it: describe the topic first, --alter --partitions when the backup asks for more, and exit non-zero with a message naming the topic and both counts when the backup asks for fewer or the replication factor differs. Whatever the chosen semantics, a restore that cannot reach the recorded state must not report Succeeded.
[MAJOR] two writers own the same topics: the driver bypasses the Strimzi Topic Operator, which owns every topic the Kafka app declares
packages/apps/kafka/templates/topics.yaml:4 renders a KafkaTopic CR for each entry in the app's spec.topics, and that CR is the declared owner of the topic. Strimzi 0.45's unidirectional topic operator reconciles the CR onto the cluster on every pass, and BatchingTopicController.buildAlterConfigOps resets any live dynamic topic config that the CR does not list:
HashSet<String> keysToRemove = configs.entries().stream()
.filter(configEntry -> configEntry.source() == ConfigEntry.ConfigSource.DYNAMIC_TOPIC_CONFIG)
.map(ConfigEntry::name).collect(Collectors.toCollection(HashSet::new));
if (TopicOperatorUtil.hasConfig(reconcilableTopic.kt())) {
keysToRemove.removeAll(reconcilableTopic.kt().getSpec().getConfig().keySet());
}
for (var key : keysToRemove) {
alterConfigOps.add(new AlterConfigOp(new ConfigEntry(key, null), AlterConfigOp.OpType.DELETE));For a chart-declared topic the driver's --add-config writes are therefore transient, and a deleted chart-declared topic is already healed by the topic operator without any backup at all. The strategy's real scope is topics created out of band through the Admin API, which is a narrower promise than the docs and the CRD description make. The conflict also runs the other way on the to-copy path: the restore creates orders with the source's partition count while the target app's own KafkaTopic CR asks for a different one, and since partitions cannot be decreased the CR is left permanently erroring while the RestoreJob reports Succeeded.
examples/backups/kafka-metadata/05-kafka-src.yaml:21 and 20-kafka-target.yaml:19 both set topics: [] and seed through the CLI, so the e2e exercises only the unmanaged case and none of this. Either state the ownership boundary explicitly in docs/operations/backup-classes.md and in the CRD description, and add an e2e corner with a chart-declared topic that asserts what happens, or restore through KafkaTopic CRs when the target app declares them. What would change my mind: evidence that cozystack pins a topic-operator configuration in which the CR is not authoritative over live topic configs, which I did not find in packages/system/kafka-operator/charts/strimzi-kafka-operator/values.yaml (featureGates: "").
[MAJOR] test coverage does not reach any of the code this PR adds
Two separate gaps.
On the Go side, internal/backupcontroller/kafkastrategy_controller.go is 589 lines of which roughly 400 are the two reconcile paths, and kafkastrategy_controller_test.go is 107 lines covering five pure helpers (validateKafkaApplicationRef, kafkaClusterName, kafkaNotReadyMessage, kafkaStrategyParameters, renderKafkaArtifactURI). Every sibling driver tests the reconcile loop against the fake client: jobstrategy_controller_test.go:145 TestReconcileJob_CreatesBatchJob, :216 _CompletesAndCreatesBackup, :288 _FailsOnJobFailed, :375 _RestoreCreatesBatchJobInTargetNamespace, plus altinitystrategy_controller_test.go:414 _RenderedBackupJobOwnedByBackupJob and mariadbstrategy_controller_test.go:189 _TargetMariaDBNotFoundIsTransient. Untested here: the StartedAt bookkeeping and its requeue, the Strimzi Ready gate and its 30 minute deadline, the owner reference on the created Job, createKafkaBackupArtifact idempotency on AlreadyExists, the restore target resolution through targetApplicationRef, and the JobFailed message path. The harness already exists in the package, so these are mechanical additions, not new infrastructure.
On the chart side, packages/system/backupstrategy-controller/tests/rendering_test.yaml:10 lists ten strategy templates and does not list templates/strategy-kafka-default.yaml, so neither the bootstrap-window assertion at :28 (hasDocuments: count: 0 when no bucket name resolves) nor the resolved-bucket assertion at :92 (count: 1) covers the new template. grep -rn kafka tests/ returns nothing. That gate is not cosmetic: the comment at :52-66 of that same file records that an ungated Strategy CR once made the first install apply zero objects with "no matches for kind" and never recover, and that a passing count: 1 there is that bug rendered green. The new template is in fact gated correctly, which I confirmed by render, but nothing in the suite would notice if that changed. Add the template to the list at :10 and to both assertions.
[MAJOR] internal/backupcontroller/kafkastrategy_controller.go:290 and :534, no deadline on Job completion, so a Job whose pod never starts pins the BackupJob in Running forever
289: default:
290: return ctrl.Result{RequeueAfter: kafkaStrategyPollInterval}, nil
kafkaDefaultBackupDeadline (:48) bounds only the cluster-Ready wait, and its own comment says so. Once the Job exists, the driver polls without a budget. buildJobStrategyBatchJob (jobstrategy_controller.go:317-327) sets backoffLimit: 2 and no activeDeadlineSeconds, and backoffLimit counts pod failures, not a pod that never leaves Waiting. A pod stuck in ImagePullBackOff therefore never reaches Complete or Failed, and the BackupJob sits in Running indefinitely with no Event and no terminal condition. That path is newly reachable here rather than theoretical, because this is the only strategy pulling a large third-party image that is not already on the node (see the image finding below) and air-gapped clusters cannot rewrite it. With a Plan in place the plan controller stamps a fresh BackupJob per cron tick, each with its own wedged Job, and the operator's only clue is a growing list of Running BackupJobs.
The etcd driver applies its deadline in exactly this branch (etcdstrategy_controller.go around the post-snapshot wait), and MariaDB does the same at mariadbstrategy_controller_test.go-pinned mariadbBackupDeadlineExceeded. Mirror that, and set spec.activeDeadlineSeconds on the rendered Job so the Job itself terminates. What would change my mind: jobstrategy and altinity share this shape today, so if the maintainers consider the unbounded poll the intended convention for Job-backed drivers, this drops to a follow-up against all three rather than a block on this one. It is listed as blocking because the driver already defines the deadline constant and uses it for only half the wait.
[MINOR] internal/backupcontroller/restorejob_controller.go:334, KafkaStrategyKind missing from the cleanup dispatch
334: case strategyv1alpha1.CNPGStrategyKind, strategyv1alpha1.JobStrategyKind, strategyv1alpha1.AltinityStrategyKind, strategyv1alpha1.MariaDBStrategyKind, strategyv1alpha1.MongoDBStrategyKind, strategyv1alpha1.FoundationDBStrategyKind, strategyv1alpha1.EtcdStrategyKind:
The PR adds KafkaStrategyKind to the backup dispatch (backupjob_controller.go:173), the restore dispatch (restorejob_controller.go:169) and supportedBackupStrategyKinds(), and misses this fourth switch on the same kind. A deleted Kafka RestoreJob therefore falls into default:, logs "RestoreJob has unrecognised strategy kind" for a kind the controller does recognise, and calls cleanupStrayVeleroRestore, which issues a typed List against cozy-velero that can never match. On a cluster running velero.bslEnabled=false that is every Kafka RestoreJob deletion. The function's own comment at :310-314 states why the list is enumerated rather than defaulted, and there are three sibling regression tests for it (restorejob_controller_test.go:102, :152, :200). Add the kind to the no-op case and a TestCleanupOnDelete_Kafka_DoesNotTouchVeleroNamespace alongside them.
[MINOR] packages/system/backupstrategy-controller/values.yaml:39-48, the pinned client image is not the broker image, and the comment says it is
44: # with (already cached on the nodes), which also bundles bash, curl and
48: kafkaBackupClientImage: "quay.io/strimzi/kafka:0.45.1-rc1-kafka-3.8.0"
packages/apps/kafka/templates/kafka.yaml sets no spec.kafka.version, so Strimzi uses its default, and kafka-versions.yaml at tag 0.45.1-rc1 marks version: 3.9.1 / default: true. Brokers therefore run quay.io/strimzi/kafka:0.45.1-rc1-kafka-3.9.1 and the backup Job pulls a different image, roughly 440 MB, on first use on each node. The PR's own e2e agrees: hack/e2e-chainsaw/kafka-metadata/chainsaw-test.yaml:78-81 resolves KAFKA_IMAGE from the operator with tail -n1 (which yields the 3.9.1 entry) and the comment at :19-20 notes the backup Jobs use the strategy pin regardless. Alongside that, the pin carries no @sha256: digest while the sibling chBackupClientImage at :38 does, and examples/backups/kafka-metadata/00-helpers.sh:34 names a third reference (0.45.0-kafka-3.8.0). Pin -kafka-3.9.1 with a digest, and use the same string in the example default. Both tags resolve today, so this is correctness of the comment plus pull cost, not a broken reference.
[MINOR] references to a RabbitMQ backup strategy that does not exist in this repository
internal/backupcontroller/kafkastrategy_controller.go:30 ("mirroring the Rabbitmq strategy"), :75 ("Mirrors rabbitmqNotReadyMessage"), api/backups/strategy/v1alpha1/kafka_types.go:38 ("Like the Job and Rabbitmq strategies"), and packages/system/backupstrategy-controller/templates/strategy-kafka-default.yaml:2 ("see strategy-rabbitmq-default.yaml for the rationale"). grep -rn 'rabbitmqNotReadyMessage' returns only the comment that names it, packages/system/backupstrategy-controller/definitions/ holds no rabbitmq CRD, templates/ holds no strategy-rabbitmq-default.yaml, and the rendered cozy-default BackupClass binds Postgres, MariaDB, Etcd, ClickHouse, MongoDB, Kafka, VMInstance and VMDisk. api/apps/v1alpha1/rabbitmq/ is the application type, not a backup driver. This matters more than a stale comment usually would because kafka_types.go:38 is copied verbatim into the shipped CRD at definitions/strategy.backups.cozystack.io_kafkas.yaml:27, so it reaches every customer cluster and anything that renders the CRD description. Point the comments at the driver actually mirrored, which is the Job strategy, and fix the template's cross-reference.
[MINOR] packages/system/backupstrategy-controller/templates/strategy-kafka-default.yaml:37-72, # comments inside the pod template ship into the rendered manifest
{{/* ... */}} at the top of the file is stripped, so the template-comment-bloat lint hit on line 1 is a false positive and I am not raising it. The roughly twenty # lines inside spec.template are a different matter: they survive rendering, which the render output confirms, so they ride into the release manifest and the Helm state Secret of every cluster. That is minor on its own, and the header block already carries the same explanation for a reader of the source, so the in-pod prose can be trimmed to the one-line notes that clarify a non-obvious constraint.
Claim mismatches
- [MISSING] "It is modelled on the RabbitMQ definitions driver" and "the counterpart to the app-specific drivers (CNPG, MariaDB, Altinity, MongoDB, Rabbitmq)". No RabbitMQ backup strategy exists in the tree, and
cozy-defaultbinds no RabbitMQ route. See the MINOR finding above for the evidence. - [MISSING] "the same one the cluster-operator provisions brokers with (already cached on the nodes)" (
values.yaml:43-44). The operator's default Kafka version at0.45.1-rc1is 3.9.1; the pin is 3.8.0. - [PARTIAL] "Validated: ...
helm unitteston the package". The suite is green (18/18), and it never renderstemplates/strategy-kafka-default.yaml, so it validates nothing about the new template. - [PARTIAL] "
go test ./internal/backupcontroller/...". Green, and it exercises only the five pure helpers; no reconcile path is covered. - [MISSING] the implicit claim that the branch is CI-clean.
make bats-unit-testsis red in two places, both traceable to the new Chainsaw suite directory.
Operational risks
- The new
hack/e2e-chainsaw/kafka-metadata/suite is enabled and, because the diff touchesapi/,cmd/andinternal/,hack/select-e2e.sh'sfull_suite_patternescalates to the full run, so a 40 minute suite that has never executed against a live cluster becomes part of the E2E gate for this PR and for every later PR that escalates. The sibling backup suite ships ashack/e2e-chainsaw/backup/chainsaw-test.yaml.disabled, which is the precedent for a backup flow that is not yet dependable in the gate. Either run it once on a dev stand before enabling it, or land it.disabledand enable it in a follow-up.
Caveats
- Existing-customer upgrade. No migration is needed and no default is removed. The behaviour change is the new
cozy-defaultroute:ResolveBackupClass(internal/backupcontroller/backupclass_resolver.go:83) currently returnsErrNoMatchingStrategyfor aKafkaapplication, so a tenantPlanorBackupJobaimed at a Kafka app fails terminally today and starts producing real Jobs after the upgrade. That is the intended feature, and it is still a silent activation on upgrade for any such object already in a cluster, worth a line in the release note beyond "add a Kafka strategy".DefaultObjectsGate.missingObjects(internal/backupcontroller/default_objects_gate.go:445-486) enumerates from the BackupClass rather than a hardcoded list, so it picks upcozy-default-kafkawithout a code change, and it skips aNoMatchcleanly while the CRD is still being registered. - Fresh install. No new package,
PackageSourceor bundle entry is involved; the CRD ships through the existingtemplates/crds.yamlglob overdefinitions/, and the new Strategy CR is gated on the resolved bucket name, so the first install renders zero copies of it and cannot trip the "no matches for kind" trap the rendering suite documents. Confirmed by render, both corners. The pre-existing hazard onprovisionBucket: false, where all strategy CRs render alongside their own CRDs on the very first install, now has one more instance; that is not this PR's doing and I am not counting it against it. - Not executed, needs a live cluster. Whether the Strimzi image actually provides
/usr/bin/bash, acurlwith--aws-sigv4, and/opt/kafka/bin/kafka-*.shat the paths the template assumes. I confirmed the tag resolves in the registry (docker manifest inspect) but did not pull and inspect the filesystem. Likewisecurl --aws-sigv4signing aPUT --upload-fileagainst the SeaweedFS S3 ingress: this is the only strategy in the chart that signs S3 requests by hand rather than through an operator's client, so it has no in-tree precedent to inherit confidence from. - Verified and sound, recorded so it is not re-litigated.
kafkaClusterNameand theBOOTSTRAPenv agree with reality:packages/system/kafka-rd/cozyrds/kafka.yamlsetsrelease.prefix: kafka-andpackages/apps/kafka/templates/kafka.yaml:20names the Strimzi CR{{ .Release.Name }}, so the cluster iskafka-<app>and the plaintext bootstrap Service iskafka-<app>-kafka-bootstrapon 9092 withtls: falseand no authentication. The S3 key round-trips: backup keys on.Release.*plus the BackupJob name, restore keys on.Backup.*plusbackup.Name, andcreateKafkaBackupArtifactnames theBackupafter the BackupJob, so the two agree. RBAC is minimal and correct: read-onlyget,list,watchonkafka.strimzi.io/kafkas, inClusterRole backups.cozystack.io:strategy-controller, matching how every sibling driver reads its operator CR, with no wildcard and no mutating verb. Generated artifacts matchmake generatebyte for byte. The e2e assertion is not a tautology: it seeds a per-runretention.msand requires it back after both restores, and checks the source is unchanged after the to-copy run. Credentials do not leak into the pod spec: they arrive throughsecretKeyRefon the already-projectedcozy-backups-creds, and the--userstring is assembled at runtime, so the only exposure is the backup pod's own argv, in a namespace where the same Secret is already readable by design.
Recommended follow-ups
- Replace
--user "${AWS_ACCESS_KEY_ID}:${AWS_SECRET_ACCESS_KEY}"(strategy-kafka-default.yaml:88) with a curl config file or--netrc-fileso the secret never appears in the pod's process arguments. Not a new exposure given the projected Secret sits in the same namespace, but it is free to fix. - The metadata format is scraped CLI output, which is what makes the two restore findings above possible. A JSON payload written and read by a small first-party client would remove that whole class, and would also let the client image drop from ~440 MB to something closer to the 23 MB the
chBackupClientImagecomment already argues for. internal/backupcontroller/kafkatypes/zz_generated.deepcopy.gohas no producer:hack/update-codegen.sh:93runscontroller-gen objectover./api/...only, neverinternal/. That is true of every existinginternal/backupcontroller/*typespackage, sokafkatypesfollows the convention rather than breaking it, but the convention means these files drift silently. Worth extending the codegen paths in a separate change.- Routing the client image through
include "cozy-lib.image"would give air-gapped clusters a rewrite point, butpackages/system/backupstrategy-controller/Chart.yamldeclares no dependencies, so the helper is not reachable from this chart and no sibling strategy template uses it. That is a chart-wide change, not something to bolt onto this PR.
Questions for the author
- What is the intended semantics when an in-place restore meets a topic whose live partition count or replication factor differs from the backup? Fail loudly, increase to match where Kafka allows it, or accept the divergence and say so in the docs? The current
--if-not-existsbehaviour is the third option reported as the first. - Is the strategy meant to cover topics declared in the app's
spec.topics, which the Strimzi topic operator owns, or only topics created out of band through the Admin API? The answer changes the docs, the CRD description, and which corner the e2e should exercise. - Should the new Chainsaw suite land enabled, or
.disabledlikehack/e2e-chainsaw/backup/, until the driver has been exercised once on a dev stand? Either way the two selector mappings need adding, because--validatewalks the directory regardless of the file suffix. - Was
-kafka-3.8.0deliberate, or intended to track the operator's default? If deliberate, the values comment should say why the client trails the brokers by a minor version instead of claiming they are the same image. - The PR body's "modelled on the RabbitMQ definitions driver" has no referent in this repository. Is there an unmerged RabbitMQ strategy branch these comments were written against?

Thanks IvanHunters — thorough and correct across the board. All of it is addressed in the latest push; per-finding: [CRITICAL] empty backup reported as success — fixed. Verdict
NOT LGTM
Two blockers reproduced end to end against the pinned image and a real Kafka 3.9.1 broker: the backup Job cannot talk to S3 at all, and the topic name is passed to kafka-topics.sh as a regex, which makes the backup record wrong data and makes the restore irreversibly repartition topics it was never asked to touch.
Findings
[CRITICAL] packages/system/backupstrategy-controller/templates/strategy-kafka-default.yaml:128, the pinned client image cannot sign S3 requests, so no backup ever uploads and no restore ever downloads
kafkaBackupClientImage is quay.io/strimzi/kafka:0.45.1-rc1-kafka-3.9.1@sha256:ba52ed04..., which ships curl 7.76.1. That version's --aws-sigv4 produces a signature S3 rejects. I ran the strategy's own s3() helper from that exact image against SeaweedFS 4.31 (the version packages/system/seaweedfs/charts/seaweedfs/Chart.yaml vendors) and against MinIO, on both linux/arm64 and linux/amd64, and every request comes back 403. The control is the same command, same server, same credentials, from curl 8.14.1, which returns 200. So the failure is the curl binary, not the endpoint, the credentials, or the missing x-amz-content-sha256 header (adding that header by hand does not help either). Both the backup PUT at line 128 and the restore GET at line 132 are affected, so the driver is non-functional on the default path. The fix has to change what runs the S3 call: a small client image with curl 8, a second container or initContainer that carries a working signer, or a controller-side presigned URL. Note that this pulls against the stated reason for choosing the Strimzi image (node cache reuse), so the trade-off is worth spelling out in the values comment.

[CRITICAL] packages/system/backupstrategy-controller/templates/strategy-kafka-default.yaml:148, --alter --topic repartitions every topic whose name matches the backed-up name as a regex, and partition counts cannot be undone
kafka-topics.sh treats --topic as a Java regex, not a literal name: TopicFilter.IncludeList.isTopicAllowed does topic.matches(regex) (apache/[email protected], server-common/src/main/java/org/apache/kafka/server/util/TopicFilter.java:65), and alterTopic applies createPartitions to every topic the filter returns (tools/src/main/java/org/apache/kafka/tools/TopicCommand.java:509-521). Kafka topic names legally contain ., which is a regex metacharacter, so a backup entry for audit.events also selects a live audit-events. I ran the rendered script's restore branch against a real broker and watched an unrelated topic go from 2 partitions to 6. Kafka cannot decrease a partition count, so there is no undo, and the increase permanently changes the key-to-partition mapping for every existing producer and consumer of that topic. The damage lands before the Job exits non-zero, so the RestoreJob reporting Failed does not protect anything. Fix: quote the name so the CLI treats it literally. \Q...\E is validated below, keeps the missing-topic case returning exit 1 (so the --create branch at line 153 still fires), and applies to line 138 and line 148 alike.

[MAJOR] packages/system/backupstrategy-controller/templates/strategy-kafka-default.yaml:102, the backup records the wrong partition count and replication factor for any topic whose name regex-matches a sibling
Same root cause on the write side. --describe --topic "${t}" can return several topics, and line=${desc%%$'\n'*} at line 105 keeps whichever came first, which is not the one being backed up. I ran the shipped rendered script against a broker holding audit.events (6 partitions) and audit-events (2 partitions) and the artifact it produced claims audit.events has 2. There is no signal: the loop echoes its own wrong numbers, the Job exits 0 on this step, and a restore from that artifact would recreate the topic under-partitioned. The config capture at line 114 is unaffected because kafka-configs.sh --entity-name is an exact match, which is visible in the same artifact. Same fix as above, plus consider parsing one bulk --describe rather than one call per topic.

[MAJOR] packages/system/backupstrategy-controller/tests/rendering_test.yaml:117, nothing pins the shell where all the behaviour lives, and both blockers sit in the untested part
The unit tests cover the Go helpers and the render shape. The 100-line script that does the actual export and import has no test at all, and the only thing that would exercise it is a Chainsaw suite the PR body says has never run. I put this through review-helper mutate: reverting the fail-closed --list guard back to || true, and deleting the replication-factor mismatch abort, both leave the whole helm unittest suite green, so the two hardening changes in fix(backups): harden Kafka metadata backup per review are unprotected and would silently regress. Two Go gaps came out of the same run: removing the Strimzi Ready precondition from reconcileKafka, and removing the applicationRef kind gate on the restore target, both keep go test ./internal/backupcontroller/ green, even though the Ready precondition is one of the three things the PR body names as the driver's reason to exist. TestReconcileKafka_RejectsWrongKind covers the backup side of that gate only. Worth adding: render-level asserts on the script (the quoted --topic argument, the fail-closed --list, the RF abort) and a Go case that seeds a not-Ready kafkatypes.Kafka and asserts the BackupJob stays out of Succeeded, plus a target-kind rejection case on the restore path.

drop-kafka-route-from-cozy-default covered: the suite went red
break-kafkaClusterName-prefix covered: the suite went red
[MAJOR] packages/system/backupstrategy-controller/templates/backupclass-default.yaml:66, cozy-default gains a Kafka route whose scope is invisible at runtime
Every other route in cozy-default backs up data. This one backs up topic definitions, and the docs table the PR adds puts it in the same column as the CNPG, MariaDB, MongoDB and Altinity rows, which is also the only Kafka row that exists, so a reader of that table concludes Kafka is covered. At runtime there is nothing that says otherwise: the produced Backup carries phase: Ready, a status.artifact.uri and strategyRef.kind: Kafka, and the BackupJob condition reads Kafka metadata backup Job completed. An operator running a Plan against cozy-default sees months of green backups and finds out at restore time that no messages were ever stored. The driver already writes DriverMetadata in createKafkaBackupArtifact (internal/backupcontroller/kafkastrategy_controller.go:355), so stamping the scope there, and naming it in the Ready condition message, costs almost nothing and makes kubectl describe backup honest. What would change my mind: if the dashboard already renders a per-strategy scope description from the ApplicationDefinition or the strategy CR, then the runtime signal exists and this drops to a docs note. I could not find one.
[MINOR] packages/system/backupstrategy-controller/templates/strategy-kafka-default.yaml:117, the config capture fails open and the restore probe hides why it failed
cfglines=$(printf '%s\n' "${cfgout}" | grep -E '...' || true) feeds if [ -n "${cfglines}" ], so any grep exit other than 1 reads as "this topic has no non-default configs" and the backup silently drops them. Honest reachability: the pattern is a constant and the input is a pipe, so exit 2 needs an I/O error and I could not construct one. It is still the shape the comment three lines above at line 90 says the --list guard exists to avoid, and the fail-closed version is two lines. Related, at line 138 the restore probe uses 2>/dev/null, which folds "topic absent" together with "broker unreachable" and throws away the message an operator would need; the downstream --create does fail on a topic that really exists, so this is diagnostics rather than correctness.
if ! cfglines=$(printf '%s\n' "${cfgout}" | grep -E '^[[:space:]]+[^[:space:]=]+='); then
rc=$?
[ "$rc" -eq 1 ] || { echo "cannot parse configs for ${t}" >&2; exit 1; }
fi[MINOR] packages/system/backupstrategy-controller/values.yaml:51, the new image pin has no producer and nothing tracks it
docs/agents/image-refs.md:46 states the invariant plainly: "Exactly one producer stamps each reference. A reference no Makefile writes will never be refreshed by anything", and it names chBackupClientImage in this same file as the live violation. kafkaBackupClientImage adds a second one. No Makefile writes it (packages/core/platform/Makefile:61 stamps only chBackupClientImage), and Renovate cannot see it either, since .github/renovate.json disables the helm-values manager repo-wide and neither custom manager covers packages/system/*/values.yaml. What is left is the comment at line 49 asking a human to "keep the tag in step with the kafka-operator default when it bumps", which is the arrangement that let the other pin freeze across two releases. The reference also skips include "cozy-lib.image", so a mirrored registry cannot rewrite it; low impact here because any cluster running a Kafka app already pulls from quay.io/strimzi, but it is the one place a rewrite would be applied. Separately, 0.45.1-rc1 is a release-candidate tag being shipped as a platform default.
Claim mismatches
[MISSING] "an honest round-trip that proves a per-run retention.ms sentinel survives both restores". The suite has never run, and with the pinned image it cannot pass: the backup Job dies at the s3 -X PUT with 403 before any restore is attempted.
[PARTIAL] "Validated: ... bash -n of the rendered script". bash -n is a syntax check. I extracted the same rendered script and executed it against a real broker, and both failure modes above surfaced on the first run.
[PARTIAL] docs/operations/backup-classes.md, "fails loudly (naming the topic and both values) when the backup asks for fewer partitions or a different replication factor". The comparison at line 144 can be made against a different topic than the one being restored, so it can both fail spuriously and pass on a mismatch.
[PARTIAL] "Restore is additive at the topic-set level ... it never deletes topics that exist live but not in the backup", and the CRD description's "The driver ... never mutates it". True of the Strimzi Kafka CR, but the restore Job does mutate topics that are not the entry being restored, as reproduced above.
Caveats
Verified sound and not re-litigated: the CRD ships through templates/crds.yaml's definitions/*.yaml glob and strategy.backups.cozystack.io/Kafka is defined exactly once; go build ./..., go vet and go test ./internal/backupcontroller/... are clean; helm unittest is 18/18 green; the S3 object key composed by the env block matches artifactURITemplate on both the backup and the restore side, because createKafkaBackupArtifact names the Backup after the BackupJob and the restore renders .BackupName from it; requeueStrategyNotReady is deadline-bounded and writes a legible Ready=False; the added RBAC is read-only get,list,watch on kafka.strimzi.io/kafkas, which is the right shape for a controller that must read a CR in any tenant namespace; the --describe output format the describe_field grep depends on is PartitionCount: N space-separated, confirmed with cat -A on the pinned image; --describe on a missing topic really does exit 1, so the create branch is reachable; the restore while read loop processes every line of a multi-entry artifact, so the JVM does not swallow the redirected stdin; the image pin does not duplicate a repository, so hack/image-pin-consistency.bats stays green; hack/select-e2e_test.bats (50 tests) and hack/select-install_test.bats (18 tests) both pass with the new mapping; the values comment's claim that the tag matches the operator default checks out against _kafka_image_map.tpl (kafka 3.9.1) and the operator chart's appVersion: 0.45.1-rc1.
Phase 5b, existing-customer upgrade: additive. A new cluster-scoped CRD with a single v1alpha1, so no stored-version transition; a new eighth route in cozy-default; a new read-only RBAC rule; no values key removed, renamed or default-flipped. The one behaviour change for an existing customer is that a Kafka application under a cozy-default Plan starts producing BackupJobs where it previously produced none, and given the blocker above those runs will fail rather than silently succeed. Not executed: the live upgrade through Flux, which is where SSA field ownership and admission would show up. That is out of scope for a static review and belongs in a cozystack-pr-test run.
Phase 5b, fresh install: the Kafka Strategy CR is gated on backupstrategy-controller.bucketName, so on a cold install it is skipped until the BucketClaim status populates and the DefaultObjectsGate forces a re-render, exactly like the seven sibling strategies. The cozy-default BackupClass still carries the cozy-default-kafka route in that window, which is the same shape all the siblings have, and requeueStrategyNotReady handles the resulting NotFound with a bounded wait and a legible condition.
Phase 5c, corners rendered: defaults with no bucket (Strategy CR correctly absent), bucketNameOverride=b1 (present, S3_BUCKET=b1), provisionBucket=false with an external bucket and endpoint (present, S3_ENDPOINT=https://s3.example.com, S3_BUCKET=extbkt), and provisionBucket=false with an empty bucket name (correctly absent). No corner failed to render.
Once the batch Job exists, the reconcile loop has no deadline: jobConditionState returning neither Complete nor Failed requeues every 5s indefinitely, so a pod stuck Pending on an unschedulable node or an image pull leaves the BackupJob in Running with no further status write. kafkaDefaultBackupDeadline only covers the cluster-not-Ready precondition, and backoffLimit: 2 only counts pod failures. The sibling Job driver has the identical shape (internal/backupcontroller/jobstrategy_controller.go:249), so I am recording it rather than attributing it to this PR.
select-install.sh maps kafka-metadata to the cozystack.kafka-application closure, which does not include the backups stack. I checked the existing mongodb suite, which also runs a backup round-trip, and its closure has the same gap, so the e2e lane must widen the install elsewhere. This PR touches api/, cmd/ and internal/, all of which hit full_suite_pattern, so it escalates to the full suite regardless.
The envelope warning crd-schema-conflict: 22 group/kind/version(s) defined more than once with differing schemas is repo-wide and pre-existing (the vendored Strimzi CRDs appear in more than one package). I confirmed the new strategy.backups.cozystack.io/v1alpha1 Kafka is not one of the duplicates.
Mechanical anti-pattern sweep, run over the diff before any reasoning: nine || true / 2>/dev/null hits. Six are in the example harness waiters and all fail closed (a kubectl failure reads as "not yet", the poll then times out and returns 1); the two in the shipped strategy are written up above; no privileged or mutating RBAC verb appears in any added rule. Shellcheck reports 8 informational or style items and no errors or warnings.
Recommended follow-ups
Run cozystack-pr-test against a disposable dev cluster once the S3 client and the topic quoting are fixed, so the kafka-3-metadata-roundtrip suite gets its first real execution before the draft is marked ready.
The example harness has the same latent regex issue: examples/backups/kafka-metadata/run-all.sh:54 runs --delete --topic "$TOPIC", and --delete filters by regex the same way --alter does. It is safe with the default TOPIC=orders, but 00-helpers.sh:22 invites an override, and a dotted override would delete more than the demo topic. topic_meta at 00-helpers.sh:150 reads the first --describe line with the same assumption.
examples/backups/nats/01-create-strategy.sh:122 uses the identical s3 -X PUT --upload-file pattern with curl --aws-sigv4. It is an example rather than a shipped strategy and there is no nats Chainsaw suite, so nothing has ever exercised it; whether it works depends on the curl in nats-box, which is worth checking on its own.

Three things block this. TLS verification is off for every backup and restore, against a convention this chart spells out one file over. The object the driver writes is never deleted when its Backup is. And neither fix from the last round is held by a test, which I proved by reverting them.
Reviewed at 7dcb742 against merge-base 7786f72. Everything below was run rather than reasoned about: a real Kafka 3.9.1 broker and a real S3 server, in throwaway containers. Upgrade from N-1, fresh install, e2e reachability and the full backup-then-restore round-trip all came back clean.

Claim mismatches
[PARTIAL] "that image is already cached on the nodes, so the backup Pod reuses it rather than pulling a second version" (values.yaml:58-60). That holds only on nodes already running a broker for that cluster. The strategy Pod carries no nodeSelector, affinity or topology constraint (strategy-kafka-default.yaml:27-33), so anywhere else it's a fresh 691 MB pull before the backup starts. The registry half of the claim does check out: the two references really are the same image.
[PARTIAL] The curl version in the code comment and the endpoint-shape row in the docs table both describe something the Job doesn't do. Detail in the two MINOR findings above.
Open risks
- curl 7.76.1 signs
HashedRequestPayload = sha256("")for a--upload-filebody (lib/http_aws_sigv4.c:95,284-286) and never sendsx-amz-content-sha256; theUNSIGNED-PAYLOADdefault with a matching header only arrived in 8.0.0. SeaweedFS and MinIO both read the missing header as the empty-string hash and skip body hashing on s3-scope requests, which is why my run passed. I could not test a backend that recomputes the body hash or demands the header, and AWS S3 and Ceph RGW become supported targets the momentprovisionBucket: false. Every other driver in this chart runs curl 8.21.0, so this one has a narrower S3 envelope than its siblings and nothing says so. One command against an RGW container settles it. - Restore applies topics as it reads them, so a failure part-way through leaves the ones already created behind.
--exclude-internalskips only__consumer_offsets,__transaction_stateand__share_group_state(Topic.java:29-40,77-79at 3.9.1), and I confirmed on a live broker thatstrimzi-store-topicis listed and captured. Restoring to-copy onto a target with a different broker count aborts on the first replication-factor mismatch. Worth a line in the README next to the RF limitation already documented there. - The Jobs have no wall clock. They inherit
buildJobStrategyBatchJob(backoffLimit: 2, noactiveDeadlineSeconds), and the 30-minute deadline bounds only the Strimzi-Ready wait (kafkastrategy_controller.go:303), so a Pod stuck pulling 691 MB requeues at 5s forever with nothing written to a condition. Every Job-shaped driver shares this, so it isn't a regression here, but the image size makes it likelier.
Recommended follow-ups
- Replace the 691 MB Strimzi image with a small client image built by this package's Makefile, the TODO already written for
chBackupClientImage. That also gives the pin a producer, which it currently lacks, and a modern curl. - Run this on a disposable dev cluster before merge. The live Flux upgrade path, admission on the new CRD and the real SeaweedFS endpoint are all out of scope for a static review, and the e2e round-trip hasn't had a green run on this branch yet.

[MAJOR] the metadata object is never deleted, and KafkaStrategyKind is missing from the Backup cleanup dispatcher
This driver writes its own artifact with curl -X PUT and records the key on status.artifact.uri. Nothing prunes it. KafkaStrategyKind is absent from BackupReconciler.cleanupOnDelete, so a deleted Kafka Backup lands in the default branch:
internal/backupcontroller/backup_controller.go:175-181
default:
// Unknown or empty strategy. Conservative path: try the Velero cleanup ...
return ctrl.Result{}, r.cleanupVeleroBackup(ctx, backup)
cleanupVeleroBackup returns at line 200 because DriverMetadata carries no velero key, so the finalizer clears and the object stays in the bucket forever. This PR already applied the same analysis to the mirror switch in restorejob_controller.go and shipped a test whose comment says a fall-through to default is what the explicit branch exists to prevent. The Backup side did not get it.
RabbitMQ, merged one commit before this branch's base, is the precedent: backup_controller.go:164-172 says that driver "uniquely OWNS its artifact ... and no engine retention prunes it. Without an explicit delete a retention-pruned Plan would grow the bucket unboundedly". Kafka has the identical property.
Concretely: a daily Plan (examples/backups/kafka-metadata/15-plan.yaml) writes one object per day per application; deleting the Backup CRs, or the whole tenant, removes every Cozystack-side handle while the objects remain in the shared system bucket with no owner. examples/backups/kafka-metadata/cleanup.sh:14 has the same effect on the e2e sandbox.
Fix: add a cleanup mode to the strategy script and a case strategyv1alpha1.KafkaStrategyKind branch mirroring cleanupRabbitmqBackup. At minimum add the explicit branch so the kind stops falling through.

[MAJOR] neither fix from the previous round is held by a test
The last commit fixed two reproduced failures in the strategy script: the SigV4 canonical-host mismatch and the --topic regex-versus-literal collision. Both revert with the chart suite still fully green. review-helper mutate, one checkout per mutation:
GAPS: 3 answered: 3 of 3
revert-QE-quoting-both-paths GAP: the suite stayed green without the fix
revert-connect-to-and-k GAP: the suite stayed green without the fix
revert-obj-url-to-portful-host GAP: the suite stayed green without the fix
revert-fail-closed-config-grep GAP: the suite stayed green without the fix
The new chart assertions cover only kind, metadata.name and artifactURITemplate; nothing reads the container's args. The e2e round-trip does not cover the regex fix either: examples/backups/kafka-metadata/00-helpers.sh:22 seeds exactly one topic (TOPIC=orders), and the collision needs a pair like audit.events plus audit-events. The CRITICAL that motivated the fix has no reproducer at any level.
Two cheap tests close it: a helm unittest matchRegex on spec.template.spec.containers[0].args[0] for the \Q...\E wrapping and the --connect-to construction, and a second colliding topic with a different partition count in run-all.sh. For contrast the Go tests added in the same commit are non-vacuous: drop-ready-precondition-on-backup and drop-target-kind-gate-on-restore both went red.

[MINOR] the scope=topic-metadata stamp is unpinned
The previous round's MAJOR was answered by stamping strategy.backups.cozystack.io/scope: topic-metadata on every produced Backup, but nothing asserts it:
drop-scope-stamp-on-backup-artifact GAP: the suite stayed green without the fix
One assertion in TestReconcileKafka_* on the created Backup's DriverMetadata closes it.
Address the review on #4000: - Drop `-k`: mirror the RabbitMQ S3 layer (ARTIFACT_URI as the single source of truth, forcePathStyle honoured, whole base URL kept) so curl --aws-sigv4 verifies TLS against the ACME endpoint the helper returns. The derived endpoint is default-port, so the curl 7.76.1 --connect-to port workaround is gone too; this also fixes the IPv6 and path-prefix mangling in the old host-splitting. - Own the artifact: a cleanup mode in the script plus cleanupKafkaBackup wired into BackupReconciler.cleanupOnDelete delete a deleted Backup's object (best-effort, waited on) instead of orphaning it, matching the RabbitMQ precedent. Kafka has the identical own-your-object property. - Restore probes existence with --list (fail closed), so an unreachable broker aborts instead of being misread as "topic absent" and created. - Hold the fixes with tests at the right level: a colliding topic pair (audit.events / audit-events, distinct partition counts) in the e2e so a revert of the \Q...\E literal-match breaks the round-trip, and Go tests pinning the scope stamp and the cleanup Job. - Correct the docs/comments: endpoint-shape row, the "cached on nodes" claim, and the narrower curl 7.76.1 S3 envelope (empty-body payload hash) that makes a small modern-curl client image the right follow-up. Make the namespace override effective. kubectl apply -f uses metadata.namespace: tenant-root from the manifests. If NAMESPACE is changed, the runner waits for and connects to resources in the overridden namespace while it creates resources in tenant-root. Parameterize the manifests, or remove the NAMESPACE override claim.

Reset prior demo state before seeding. Each run creates a new RETENTION value, but seed_topic uses --if-not-exists. Delete or reconfigure existing topics and recreate terminal BackupJob and RestoreJob resources before starting a new run.

Verdict
NOT LGTM
Every S3 call the strategy makes returns 403 when the endpoint carries a port, which is the shape backupStorage.endpoint ships with. That one is a regression inside this PR: 7dcb74210 diagnosed the curl 7.76.1 host/port bug correctly and worked around it, and a9e854803 deleted the workaround and the diagnosis together with -k, leaving the image pin unchanged. Separately, none of this round's script fixes is held by a test.
Findings
- [MAJOR]
packages/system/backupstrategy-controller/templates/strategy-kafka-default.yaml:102, the pinned image cannot sign an S3 request against an endpoint with a port - [MAJOR]
packages/system/backupstrategy-controller/tests/rendering_test.yaml:152, none of the script fixes survives mutation - [MINOR]
internal/backupcontroller/backup_controller.go:173, the Backup cleanup route and the readiness deadline are both unpinned - [MINOR]
packages/system/backupstrategy-controller/templates/strategy-kafka-default.yaml:126, export time scales with topic count and nothing bounds the Job - [MINOR]
packages/system/backupstrategy-controller/templates/strategy-kafka-default.yaml:226, restore only adds configs - [MISSING]
packages/system/backupstrategy-controller/values.yaml:71, "SeaweedFS and MinIO accept that" is disproved on both backends

[PARTIAL] "it is kept a draft until that first live run is green". The PR is open and not a draft, and kafka-3-metadata-roundtrip has not run.
Caveats
- Verified against pinned upstream, not a live broker:
--topicis a regex on both--describeand--alter(TopicCommand.java:511intodoGetTopics), andIncludeList.isTopicAllowedusesString.matches, so\Q...\Ematches exactly one topic (TopicFilter.java:64).--add-config 'k=[a,b]'splits correctly and strips the brackets (ConfigCommand.scala:296-302). - Not executed, needs a cluster: whether the e2e sandbox's seaweedfs ingress presents a certificate curl accepts now that
-kis gone, SSA behaviour, and the Admin API against a real broker. The script's parsing was exercised against stubbedkafka-topics.sh/kafka-configs.shin the pinned image instead, and the backup-to-restore round trip came out correct, including a comma-valued config. hack/select-e2e_test.batstest 44 fails here, but it fails identically on merge-base7786f72b9, so it is not this change. The other 50 pass,select-install_test.batspasses,go build,go vetandgo test ./internal/backupcontroller/...are green.- The fail-open sweep over the added shell found

[MAJOR] the pinned image cannot sign an S3 request against an endpoint with a port
curl 7.76.1 omits a non-default port from the canonical host it signs, so --aws-sigv4 produces a signature the backend rejects. Commit 7dcb74210 diagnosed this correctly and worked around it with --connect-to; a9e854803 removed the workaround along with -k and replaced the diagnosis with a payload-hash explanation that does not hold.
Reproduced in the pinned image (quay.io/strimzi/kafka@sha256:ba52ed04, curl 7.76.1, RHEL 9.6), running this chart's own rendered script against real backends:
SeaweedFS 4.31 PUT/GET http://host:8333/cozy-backups/... -> 403 SignatureDoesNotMatch
DELETE -> 403
MinIO PUT/GET/DELETE http://host:9000/... -> 403 SignatureDoesNotMatch
control, curl 8.11.0, same backends, same URLs, same keys -> PUT 200, GET 200, DELETE 204
isolation, curl 7.76.1 against MinIO:
http://host/bucket/k1 (port 80, implicit) -> 200
http://host:80/bucket/k2 (port 80, explicit) -> 200
http://host:9000/bucket/k3 -> 403
http://host/bucket/k4 with --connect-to host::host:9000 -> 200
helm template puts S3_ENDPOINT: http://seaweedfs-s3.tenant-root.svc.cozy.local:8333 into the Job, which is the value used verbatim for provisionBucket: false, when the COSI Secret lookup returns nothing, and whenever seaweedfs runs with s3.ingress.enabled: false (the COSI driver then advertises https://<svc>:8333, see charts/seaweedfs/templates/cosi/cosi-deployment.yaml:82). Backup, restore and the cleanup delete all fail there; the cleanup failure additionally leaves the Backup Terminating while a delete Job is recreated every few seconds. The default install reaches an ingress host with no port and is unaffected, which is why this is scoped rather than total.
Either restore --connect-to or move the driver to an image whose curl is 7.87 or newer, and add a render assertion for the flag.

[MAJOR] none of the script fixes survives mutation
The chart suite asserts the Strategy CR's kind, name and artifactURITemplate and stops there, so every behavioural fix in the 160-line script is unpinned. review-helper mutate, one checkout per mutation, chart suite as the test:

control: revert-per-run-BackupName-key-segment covered (suite went red)
-k can be put back, \Q...\E stripped from both call sites, grep -qxF weakened to a substring match, the comma bracket-grouping undone and the fail-closed --list guard turned into || true, and the suite still reports 18/18. The Go side is in better shape: the scope stamp, the adopt guard and the RestoreJob cleanup route each go red under mutation.

[MINOR] the Backup cleanup route and the readiness deadline are both unpinned
TestCleanupKafkaBackup_SpawnsDeleteJob calls cleanupKafkaBackup directly, so removing the case that makes it reachable leaves the suite green. drop-ready-precondition-deadline (replacing the kafkaDefaultBackupDeadline comparison with if false) is also green. A dispatch-level case in the reconciler test and one deadline case close both.

[MINOR] export time scales with topic count and nothing bounds the Job
The loop spends two CLI invocations per topic, each a fresh JVM: measured 1.53s, 1.62s and 3.22s in the pinned image. A cluster with 500 topics is roughly half an hour of wall clock. buildJobStrategyBatchJob sets backoffLimit: 2 and no activeDeadlineSeconds, and reconcileKafka's running-Job branch requeues without a deadline, so a slow or wedged export pins the BackupJob in Running with no terminal state. Worth an activeDeadlineSeconds on the Job and a note in the docs about topic-count scaling.

[MINOR] restore only adds configs
The C branch runs --add-config and never --delete-config, so an in-place restore onto a topic that gained a config after the backup leaves it in place and still reports Succeeded. docs/operations/backup-classes.md:362 states that a restore which cannot reach the recorded state must not report success, and names only partitions and replication factor as the loud cases. Either reconcile the config set or say in the docs that config restore is additive.

[MISSING] "SeaweedFS and MinIO accept that" is disproved on both backends
Both reject the request on a ported endpoint and both accept it, upload included, when the port is default. The stated boundary, a backend that recomputes the body hash, is not the one that decides the outcome, and the limitation is not confined to provisionBucket: false pointing at AWS S3 or Ceph RGW. The same sentence is repeated at docs/operations/backup-classes.md:364. An operator reading either line to decide whether their endpoint is safe gets the wrong answer.

Not a template grep. - Pin the Backup-delete dispatch and the readiness deadline in Go: TestCleanupOnDelete_Kafka_RoutesToKafkaCleanup and TestReconcileKafka_FailsAfterReadinessDeadline. - Docs: config restore is additive (no --delete-config); export time scales with topic count and the Job has no wall clock (as its siblings). The Kafka metadata strategy pinned kafkaBackupClientImage to an upstream Strimzi tag with no producer: nothing stamped it and Renovate does not manage helm-values, so it drifted from the broker version the operator provisions. A dedicated small client image (the sibling curl-only drivers' follow-up) is not viable here because the driver runs the Kafka Admin-API CLI, which only the broker image ships. Resolve the client image from a live broker pod of the target Strimzi Kafka at reconcile time instead, so the CLI always matches the broker (any version the operator picks, not only the chart default), and record it on the Backup so cleanup can reuse it once the source cluster is gone. The chart no longer pins the image; the strategy template renders it as the .ClientImage placeholder the controller fills. Signed-off-by: Andrey Kolkov <[email protected]> Assisted-by: LLM
- delete_topic waited with `grep -qx` (BRE), so deleting `audit.events` matched the live `audit-events` and spun to its timeout — the e2e failed at step 25 on every run that reached it. Use `grep -qxF`. - The two -k/--connect-to guards were written as `! grep`, which cannot fail under hack/cozytest.sh (it wraps each @test in `set -e` + a trailing `return 0`, and bash exempts a `!`-negated command from errexit). Rewrite them as positive `if grep ...; then return 1; fi`; verified the -k reinstatement now reddens the suite under cozytest. - Cover the restore-side literal-topic guard that was unpinned at every level: a bats case runs the existing-topic branch with a colliding sibling and asserts the `--alter` argv carries `\Q…\E`, and run-all.sh now leaves `audit.events` live so the e2e exercises that branch instead of only `--create`. Add bats cases for the partition-shrink refusal, the `-f` upload guard, and `--exclude-internal`. - Bound a running Job: reconcileKafka / reconcileKafkaRestore now fail the BackupJob/RestoreJob once kafkaDefaultBackupDeadline elapses in the Job-running branch (buildJobStrategyBatchJob sets no activeDeadlineSeconds), so an unschedulable pod no longer pins it in Running forever. Pinned by TestReconcileKafka_FailsWhenJobNeverCompletes. - Fail closed on an unknown record kind and an unknown MODE, and validate the live partition/RF parsed on restore (an empty value silently skipped reconciliation). Correct the stale "image pinned in the strategy" comment in the example helpers and the chainsaw test (the controller now resolves the target broker's image as .ClientImage). …ller wall clock A controller-side running-Job deadline was enforced in reconcileKafka / reconcileKafkaRestore: at kafkaDefaultBackupDeadline from StartedAt the BackupJob/RestoreJob was marked Failed. But the batch Job carried no activeDeadlineSeconds and markBackupJobFailed only writes status, so the Job kept running, finished, and its final `s3 PUT` uploaded the object — while the terminal phase meant no Backup was ever created and cleanup (keyed on Backup deletion) never ran. Every timed-out run thus orphaned a uniquely-keyed object, and a cluster whose export legitimately exceeds the deadline could never produce a usable backup. The shipped docs also claimed the run "keeps the BackupJob Running ... rather than failing on a wall clock", which the deadline made false. Move the bound onto the Job as activeDeadlineSeconds (setKafkaJobDeadline): Kubernetes fails an unschedulable or wedged Job as DeadlineExceeded and kills its pod before the upload, so a timed-out run lands in the JobFailed branch cleanly and leaves no object behind. Make it operator-tunable with the `backupTimeout` BackupClass parameter (a Go duration), which round-trips through the Backup so a restore is bounded by the same value; the readiness-precondition wait honours it too. Correct the docs. Also requeue on a transient broker-image List error instead of failing the whole run: resolveKafkaBrokerImage now wraps a sentinel (errNoKafkaBroker) so only a Ready cluster with no listable broker is terminal. Tests: pin the deadline on the built Job, the backupTimeout override, a JobFailed run marking the owner Failed, and the transient-List requeue. …artifact The restore half of the driver - the half that mutates a live Kafka cluster - had no test reaching its happy path, so three reversions of it left the suite green. - Add restore reconcile tests mirroring the Rabbitmq driver this was copied from: ToCopy (pins the targetApplicationRef.Name merge - a to-copy restore must resolve the TARGET, not write the source's topics back into the source), NoRecordedArtifactURI, TargetClusterNotReady and TargetNotFound. Verified non-vacuous: neutralising the name merge reddens ToCopy, and reverting the fail-fast ordering below reddens NoRecordedArtifactURI. - Fail fast on a Backup with no status.artifact.uri: move the check ahead of the readiness gate so it terminates immediately instead of waiting out the whole deadline and then reporting a misleading "timed out waiting for Kafka cluster to become Ready" (reconcileRabbitmqRestore checks it first; same order here). - Add bats cases for the fail-closed guards that no test reddened: MODE validation, the s3:// URI prefix, cleanup treating 404 as success, an unparsable backup/live describe, a kafka-configs describe error, and an unrecognised record kind (plus a CFG_FAIL knob in the configs stub). The describe-parse guards abort via `set -euo pipefail` at the `X=$(describe_field ...)` assignment, so these pin the fail-closed behaviour; the explicit guards remain as belt-and-braces. …restore
The restore path validated only the shape parsed from the live cluster,
not the partition count and replication factor read from the stored
object. A non-numeric recorded partition count made `[ "${lp}" -lt
"${parts}" ]` and its `elif` exit 2; an `if` condition is exempt from
errexit, so both read as false, the topic was skipped, and the loop still
printed its per-topic success line - so the RestoreJob reached Succeeded
without ever touching the topic. A well-formed but wrong-content object,
which curl -f cannot catch, must fail loudly like the unrecognised-record
guard.
Validate the recorded parts and rf are numeric before the comparisons and
--create, with a bats case that reddens when the guard is dropped.
Also correct a stale to-copy example comment: the strategy reads the exact
object the source backup recorded in status.artifact.uri (injected as
ARTIFACT_URI), not a key derived from .Backup.ApplicationRef.

The script opens with `set -euo pipefail` and no shebang, so shellcheck reports SC2148 and cannot tell which dialect to lint against. Declare it with a `# shellcheck shell=bash` directive as the first line: shellcheck and pre-commit now lint it as bash, and the line is an inert comment once the script is embedded into the Job's pod argument. The run-all.sh flow header and the chainsaw harness header both said the ad-hoc BackupJob runs against the platform cozy-default BackupClass. It routes to this demo's kafka-metadata BackupClass instead, which maps Kafka to the kafka-strategy-default strategy that run-all.sh derives from the shipped cozy-default-kafka at run time. The numbered manifests already described this; only the two summary headers overstated the one piece of wiring the demo exists to exercise. Reword them to match. The Kafka restore path rejects a recorded replication factor that is not numeric, but only the partition-count guard had its own test. Dropping both guards reddened that test, so the pair looked covered, while dropping the replication-factor guard alone left the suite green. Add a case that drives the create path (topic absent) with a valid recorded partition count and a non-numeric replication factor, so the guard is pinned on its own and a future edit that removes it fails loudly. NOT LGTM. The e2e suite this PR adds ran for the first time and died at step 05, before any of the driver executed. The cause is a fixture this PR ships.
The things that are done first. Last round's block was not your code: a sibling backup driver merged to main about half an hour after your head commit and took the same anchors, so eight files conflicted. The rebase fixed that, and I checked the resolution rather than trusting it. git range-diff against the old head gives eleven of seventeen patches byte-identical, the six that moved are context shifts, and the only semantic change is the shared cleanup case in restorejob_controller.go now carrying both Redis and Kafka. Nothing was dropped, all eleven strategy kinds are still accounted for in the cleanup dispatch, and the package unit tests pass with both drivers' render assertions.
The replication-factor guard is pinned properly now. Deleting kafka-backup.sh:163 on its own reddens only the replication-factor test, and deleting 162 on its own reddens only the partition-count test, so both guards are covered independently. 24 tests against 24 @test declarations, nothing silently skipped. The header fix survived the rebase at all three sites.
Blocker
The suite reported skipped last round and I said I could not explain it. The conflict is why. Rebasing let it run, so this is its first real result.
kafka-3-metadata-roundtrip failed after 346s. The only step header it printed was Step 05: Deploy source Kafka 'kafka-meta-src', followed by Timeout waiting for HelmRelease/kafka-kafka-meta-src to become Ready at the 300s budget in wait_hr_ready. No BackupJob, no RestoreJob, no strategy step. None of the new code ran. The HelmRelease never went Ready because the broker crashlooped: restarts=5, BackOff restarting failed container kafka, and no Unhealthy event, so it exits on its own instead of being probe-killed.
Both fixtures set resourcesPreset: "small" (examples/backups/kafka-metadata/05-kafka-src.yaml:16 and :20, 20-kafka-target.yaml:14 and :18). In _resourcepresets.tpl that is a deprecated legacy alias worth 1 CPU / 512Mi, and the comment above the alias block says new code should not introduce legacy names. The Kafka chart's own default is c1.small, 1 CPU / 1Gi, at packages/apps/kafka/values.yaml:112 and :133, so the fixture halves the chart default. The preset lands on the broker container's memory limit through cozy-lib.resources.defaultingSanitize. The control sits inside the same CI run: hack/e2e-chainsaw/kafka/kafka.yaml uses c1.small and its broker came up without trouble, and the RabbitMQ demo this driver is modelled on also uses c1.small and passed. I did not find an explicit OOMKilled in the captured output, so treat 512Mi as the probable mechanism rather than a proven one. What is certain is that the fixture sits below the chart default and below every Kafka fixture in the tree that currently works.
Set resourcesPreset: "c1.small" on the kafka and zookeeper blocks in both fixtures and re-run. That matches the chart default, the sibling demo and the in-tree fixture at once. Your description names the first green live run as a merge precondition, and it is still open.
Two other suites failed in the same run and neither is yours. The Redis backup roundtrip could not pull its PR-tagged job image, and the base Kafka app suite hung on delete rather than on startup.
Non-blocking
run-all.sh:22 says NAMESPACE can be overridden through the environment, but every kubectl apply -f uses the manifests' hardcoded namespace: tenant-root while the waits and reads use -n "$NAMESPACE". Set it to anything else and the script creates resources in one namespace and waits in another. CI passes tenant-root, so it never bites there. Either parameterize the manifests or drop the line from the header.

small is the deprecated legacy alias, 1 CPU / 512Mi. The Kafka chart defaults to c1.small (1 CPU / 1Gi) at packages/apps/kafka/values.yaml:112, so this halves it, and the broker crashlooped here in CI before the HelmRelease ever went Ready. c1.small on both this and the zookeeper block at line 20.

Correction to my last review. The OOM is in the run artifacts after all, in the diagnostic bundle rather than the job log, so the mechanism is not a guess.
status.containerStatuses[0] on kafka-kafka-meta-src-kafka-0: limits.memory: 512Mi, restartCount: 5, and both lastState.terminated and state.terminated carry exitCode: 137 with reason: OOMKilled, seventeen and ten seconds after start. The pod also sets STRIMZI_DYNAMIC_HEAP_PERCENTAGE: "50", so small gives the broker a 256Mi heap and c1.small gives it 512Mi.
So c1.small on both fixtures is the fix, not a guess worth trying.
The demo's source and to-copy Kafka fixtures requested resourcesPreset "small", the deprecated legacy alias worth 1 CPU / 512Mi — half the Kafka chart's own c1.small default (1 CPU / 1Gi). 512Mi is too little for the broker: it crashlooped before the HelmRelease went Ready, so the demo never reached the backup. Use c1.small on the kafka and zookeeper blocks of both fixtures, matching the chart default and the in-tree kafka e2e fixture that comes up cleanly. …emo runner run-all.sh said NAMESPACE could be overridden through the environment, but the numbered manifests pin namespace: tenant-root while only the waits read $NAMESPACE, so an override would create resources in one namespace and wait in another. LGTM. The preset fix is complete: c1.small on kafka and zookeeper in both fixtures, so the broker heap goes from 256Mi to 512Mi and the OOMKill that ended step 05 is gone.
The delta since my last round is three files, so I re-checked instead of re-reviewing. Rebase resolution, the shared dispatch case carrying both kinds, 24 tests in the bats suite, the restore guards at kafka-backup.sh:162-163, the kafka-metadata class naming. All unchanged, and both new commit bodies are clean.
One thing this approval does not cover. Your PR body makes a green first run of kafka-3-metadata-roundtrip a merge precondition, and that has not happened: the E2E job is still running on this head as I write. The fixture fix only gets the suite past step 05, and everything after that has never executed. I am approving the code, not the run. Hold the merge until that job goes green, and if it dies further in, that is new information.
Non-blocking: README.md:36 still says NAMESPACE can be overridden to run elsewhere. That is the claim your head commit just deleted from run-all.sh as wrong, for the same reason. The manifests pin tenant-root and only the waits read the variable. Worth dropping on the next push.

Verdict
NOT LGTM
Two blockers, and one of them has been open since 4 September.
The driver itself is in good shape. Nearly every failure mode I could derive is already guarded, and most of those guards are pinned by a test that names the mutation it kills, which is not something I get to write often. What's left is narrower than previous rounds: one input class the guards don't cover, one parameter that gets thrown away without telling anyone, and a guard whose test doesn't actually hold it.

files/kafka-backup.sh:199, 4th round open, first raised 7 Sep. Restore adds topic configs and never deletes them. It's now documented as accepted behaviour, which may well be the right answer for a metadata-only driver. Say so on the thread and I'll close it instead of carrying it into another round.

CI on the reviewed head
E2E (in-tree) is red on caae13a60 (job 103882347182, step Run E2E tests): 52 passed, 3 failed. This PR's own kafka-3-metadata-roundtrip passed, 513.93s. The roundtrip that had never run last round is green.
The three failures are opensearch, clickhouse-2-backup-roundtrip, and kafka at verify-pvc-reclaim-on-delete, where deleting apps.cozystack.io/Kafka in tenant-test hit context deadline exceeded exactly 5m after the DELETE returned OK. The object outlives the timeout, which is the finalizer class tracked in #3793. #3938 proposes a fix but is not merged, so that path is still unguarded on main.
Whether this PR is involved, I can't tell from here.
Against it: the diff touches neither packages/apps/kafka nor hack/e2e-chainsaw/kafka/, adds no finalizer, and the new RBAC on kafka.strimzi.io/kafkas is read-only. For it: the last main run I compared against (job 103911808076, 12 Sep) failed only opensearch, with kafka green, and this PR adds a suite that stands up two more Strimzi clusters inside the same run. One run on each side can't separate contention from coincidence. That's a re-run to settle, not something to read off the diff.
Caveats
- Verified clean on my side: render-diff vs the merge base over
provisionBucketxforcePathStyle(0 regressions, 0 immutable breaks), an 8-corner render matrix, and mutation of the shell and controller guards other than the one above. make generatewas not run, so the CRD text is checked by reading, not by regeneration.- Nothing here was executed against a live cluster or a live broker, so the SigV4 and
--connect-tobehaviour against a real S3 backend remains verified only at the argv level.

There was a problem hiding this comment.
[MAJOR] an unparseable or sub-minute backupTimeout is discarded with no signal anywhere
kafkaRunDeadline silently substitutes the 30m default for any value time.ParseDuration rejects and for anything below kafkaMinBackupDeadline. Nothing validates the parameter at ingestion, and the fallback emits no Event, no condition and no log line:
$ sed -n '151,158p' internal/backupcontroller/kafkastrategy_controller.go
func kafkaRunDeadline(parameters map[string]string) time.Duration {
if v := parameters[kafkaBackupTimeoutParam]; v != "" {
if d, err := time.ParseDuration(v); err == nil && d >= kafkaMinBackupDeadline {
return d
}
}
return kafkaDefaultBackupDeadline
}
Scenario: an admin sets backupTimeout: "90" (or "2 hours", or "45s") on a BackupClass for a Kafka app with several hundred topics. By the doc's own arithmetic at docs/operations/backup-classes.md:386 (two JVM launches per topic), that export needs more than 30 minutes, so every scheduled backup dies at DeadlineExceeded. The BackupJob message names the Job; nothing names the discarded parameter, and raising the value again changes nothing because the new value is rejected the same way.
The controller already has the mechanism: it records a Warning Event for a different case at :889:
$ grep -n 'Recorder' internal/backupcontroller/kafkastrategy_controller.go
888: if r.Recorder != nil {
889: r.Recorder.Eventf(backup, corev1.EventTypeWarning, "ArtifactNotDeleted", "left object %s in the bucket: %s", uri, reason)
So a Warning naming the rejected value and the deadline actually applied is a few lines, not a new dependency. The Job does carry the effective activeDeadlineSeconds, so an operator who thinks to read the Job object can work it out; if you consider that sufficient signal, say so and this drops to a note.

There was a problem hiding this comment.
[MAJOR] under pipefail, grep -q on a large topic list routes an existing topic into --create
The script runs set -euo pipefail (line 2). grep -q exits at the first match, so when the remaining unread part of ${live} is larger than the pipe buffer, printf takes SIGPIPE, the pipeline status becomes 141, the if goes false, and a topic that exists live is treated as absent and sent to --create at :187, which fails with TopicExistsException and aborts the restore. A re-run hits the same thing, deterministically, because nothing here is timing-dependent: it is decided by how many bytes follow the match.
Reproduced with the pipeline exactly as written, varying only the list size:
$ cat repro.sh
#!/usr/bin/env bash
set -euo pipefail
for n in 1000 3000 5000 8000 20000; do
live=$(printf 'topic-%06d\n' $(seq 1 $n))
t=topic-000001
if printf '%s\n' "${live}" | grep -qxF -- "${t}"; then r="found"; else r="MISROUTE"; fi
echo "topics=$n bytes=${#live} -> $r"
done
$ bash repro.sh
topics=1000 bytes=12999 -> found
topics=3000 bytes=38999 -> found
topics=5000 bytes=64999 -> MISROUTE
topics=8000 bytes=103999 -> MISROUTE
topics=20000 bytes=259999 -> MISROUTE
The threshold is the 64 KiB pipe buffer, so it takes a few thousand topics after the matched one, above the "many hundreds" the docs contemplate. That is why this is MAJOR and not CRITICAL: it fails loudly and loses no data. It is also the only input class the script's guards do not cover, and it is one line to close. grep -qxF -- "${t}" <<<"${live}" has no pipeline and no SIGPIPE; so does a case over the list.
This is the only such pipeline in the file; the backup side is unaffected:
$ grep -n '| *grep -q' packages/system/backupstrategy-controller/files/kafka-backup.sh
165: if printf '%s\n' "${live}" | grep -qxF -- "${t}"; then

[MAJOR] still open (4th round): the restore-side --describe guard is pinned by no test
Raised first on 2026-09-04 and still reproducible at caae13a60. The \Q...\E literal-match guards were added in three places; two are genuinely pinned and one is not. Reverting only the restore-side --describe, the call that reads live PartitionCount/RF before the alter-or-create decision, leaves the whole suite green:
$ python3 - <<'PY'
p='packages/system/backupstrategy-controller/files/kafka-backup.sh'
s=open(p).read().split('\n')
s[165]=s[165].replace('"\\Q${t}\\E"','"${t}"') # line 166, the restore-side --describe
open(p,'w').write('\n'.join(s))
PY
$ COZYTEST_TRACE=0 hack/cozytest.sh hack/kafka-backup-script.bats
passed=24 failed=0
$ git checkout -- packages/system/backupstrategy-controller/files/kafka-backup.sh
The same mutation on the --alter call at :182 does redden a test, so the harness is capable of catching it. The run stops at the first failure, hence the lower pass count:
passed=9 failed=1
Test failed: restore of an existing under-partitioned topic alters it with the literal-Q wrapper (exit 1)
The reason nothing catches :166 is the fixture: the only colliding pair in the suite (pay.events / pay-events) gives both topics the same PartitionCount and RF, so a describe that matched the sibling returns identical numbers and nothing downstream diverges. Giving the two colliding topics different shapes makes the existing test able to fail.
The suite header at hack/kafka-backup-script.bats:20-24 lists "\Q literal-match on describe and alter" as covered, which is true of the alter half only.

[MINOR] still open (4th round): restore only adds topic configs, never removes them
Raised first on 2026-09-07. The restore path calls --add-config and there is no --delete-config anywhere in the file:
$ grep -n 'add-config\|delete-config' packages/system/backupstrategy-controller/files/kafka-backup.sh
199: "${BIN}"/kafka-configs.sh --bootstrap-server "${BOOTSTRAP}" --alter --entity-type topics --entity-name "${t}" --add-config "${add}"
So a config set on a live topic after the backup was taken survives an in-place restore, and the restored topic is the backup's configs unioned with whatever drifted, not the backup's configs.
The flag to do it exists on the CLI the Job actually runs:
$ docker run --rm --entrypoint /bin/sh quay.io/strimzi/kafka:0.45.0-kafka-3.9.0 \
-c '/opt/kafka/bin/kafka-configs.sh --help 2>&1 | grep -E -- "--(add|delete)-config"'
--add-config <String> Key Value pairs of configs to add.
--add-config-file <String> Path to a properties file with configs
--delete-config <String> config keys to remove 'k1,k2'
What changed since the last round is that this is now stated in the docs (docs/operations/backup-classes.md:382) as accepted behaviour rather than left implicit, which is a reasonable answer for a metadata-only driver. Keeping it open only because the checklist carries it; if the documented semantics are the intent, say so on the thread and I will close it rather than re-raise it next round.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Confirmed — this is intentional, and the documented contract. The driver backs up topic metadata only, and restore is deliberately additive: it recreates missing topics and re-applies each recorded non-default config via --add-config, but never --delete-config. A config set on a live topic after the backup is taken is left in place, not reverted, so an in-place restore is the backup's configs unioned with any live drift rather than a byte-identical rollback.
This is stated as accepted behaviour in docs/operations/backup-classes.md — a metadata-only driver restores the recorded shape, it doesn't reconcile the live topic down to it. Good to close per your note; I'll open a follow-up if we later want an opt-in strict/replace mode.

This doc comment is copied verbatim into the generated CRD (packages/system/backupstrategy-controller/definitions/strategy.backups.cozystack.io_kafkas.yaml:69), so it is what kubectl explain and the dashboard show, and it lists only "backup" and "restore". cleanupKafkaBackup also renders the template with kafkaStrategyModeCleanup (internal/backupcontroller/kafkastrategy_controller.go:832, constant at :39).
api/backups/strategy/v1alpha1/redis_types.go:64, the sibling that also has a cleanup mode, documents all three; job_types.go:60 documents two because the Job strategy genuinely has none.
Beyond tidiness: someone writing a custom Kafka strategy against this description writes {{ if eq .Mode "backup" }} … {{ else }} <restore> {{ end }} and their restore branch then runs on the cleanup pass. That is the mis-dispatch the shipped script's own MODE guard at packages/system/backupstrategy-controller/files/kafka-backup.sh:14-17 exists to prevent.

[MINOR] the embedded script IS templated by the controller, contrary to this comment
"It reads only env vars, never Helm/controller values, so no tpl is applied" is not what happens. internal/template.Template marshals the PodTemplateSpec and maps over every string leaf, args[0] included:
$ sed -n '50,67p' internal/template/template.go
func mapAtStrings(v any, f func(string) string) any {
switch x := v.(type) {
case map[string]any:
for k, val := range x {
x[k] = mapAtStrings(val, f)
}
...
case string:
return f(x)
So the whole script is parsed and executed as a Go template on every backup, restore and cleanup render, and the {{ .Mode }} inside the comment at files/kafka-backup.sh:12 really is substituted: the rendered args[0] differs from the file on disk.
Today the only consequence is that one comment gets rewritten, which is harmless. The trap is the next edit: any {{ added anywhere in the script is expanded too, and when the template fails to parse, templateFunc returns the leaf unchanged rather than erroring:
$ sed -n '21,27p' internal/template/template.go
templateFunc := func(in string) string {
out, err := template(in, templateContext)
if err != nil {
return in
}
return out
}
So a broken construct ships silently. Either correct the comment to say the script is templated and {{ must be avoided, or drop the {{ .Mode }} from the comment at files/kafka-backup.sh:12 so the script carries no template actions at all.

[MINOR] fixed artifact path couples every test in the bats suite to one file
BIN was deliberately made overridable at :6 ("Overridable only so hack/kafka-backup-script.bats can point it at stubbed kafka-topics.sh / kafka-configs.sh"), but file=/tmp/kafka-metadata.txt was not, and hack/kafka-backup-script.bats neither overrides it nor removes it between tests. Every @test reads and writes the same path, and leftovers survive from one suite run to the next.
Inside the Job pod this is fine: one container, isolated /tmp. The exposed surface is the suite that vouches for the script. Two reviewers hit it independently on this head: intermittent local failures where the script operated on a previous run's records rather than the fixture the failing test had just written, in one case producing a valid-looking object with records from two runs interleaved. Neither of us could reproduce it under instrumentation and CI's Linux unit job is green on this head, so this is the coupling and not an asserted live break. It can produce false passes as well as false failures, since every negative test asserts only a non-zero exit.
One line: file="${METADATA_FILE:-/tmp/kafka-metadata.txt}", with init_stubs exporting METADATA_FILE="$STATE/metadata.txt".
kafkaRunDeadline silently substituted the 30m default for a backupTimeout that time.ParseDuration rejects or that falls below the one-minute floor, with no Event, condition or log line. An operator who set an unparseable or sub-minute value, then raised it, saw every run keep dying at DeadlineExceeded with nothing naming the discarded parameter. Return the applied deadline together with a message when the configured value is rejected, and record it as a BackupTimeoutInvalid Warning Event on the BackupJob and RestoreJob (the reconcilers already hold a Recorder). An honoured or unset value stays silent. TestKafkaRunDeadline now asserts the warning fires for the rejected cases and not otherwise. Signed-off-by: Andrey Kolkov <[email protected]> Assisted-by: LLM
…scratch file The restore existence check piped the live topic list into `grep -qxF`. grep exits at the first match, so once the matched topic is far enough from the end of a list larger than the 64 KiB pipe buffer, the producing printf takes SIGPIPE, pipefail turns the pipeline into a failure, the `if` reads false, and a topic that exists is sent to --create, which fails with TopicExistsException. Read the list from a here-string instead: no pipe, no SIGPIPE, decided by content rather than list size. Also make the local metadata scratch file overridable (METADATA_FILE), like BIN already is, so the bats suite can point each test at its own path instead of sharing /tmp/kafka-metadata.txt across runs. The Job never sets it and keeps the default. Signed-off-by: Andrey Kolkov <[email protected]> Assisted-by: LLM
The restore path wraps the topic in \Q...\E on both the --describe and the --alter calls so a name with a regex-special character cannot match a colliding sibling. Only the --alter guard was pinned: the colliding pair in the fixture gave both topics the same partition count and replication factor, so stripping \Q on the --describe read the sibling's identical numbers and nothing downstream diverged. Give the sibling a distinct, larger partition count. A stripped --describe \Q now matches it first (glob order places desc.pay-events before desc.pay.events), reads 9 > the backup's 7, and aborts with "cannot decrease partitions" so no alter is recorded and the assertion reddens. Also point the suite's scratch file at a per-test path via METADATA_FILE so runs cannot read back a prior test's records. Signed-off-by: Andrey Kolkov <[email protected]> Assisted-by: LLM
…mplating note The KafkaSpec.Template doc listed .Mode as "backup" or "restore", but the driver also renders it as "cleanup" when reaping a removed Backup's object; the comment is copied verbatim into the CRD, so kubectl explain and the dashboard showed two values while a custom strategy's restore branch would run on the cleanup pass. List all three, matching the Redis sibling, and regenerate the CRD. The strategy template also claimed the embedded script "reads only env vars, never Helm/controller values, so no tpl is applied". The controller renders every string leaf of the PodTemplateSpec through internal/template, args[0] included, so the script is templated on every run. State that instead, without literal template braces that Helm would itself expand. Signed-off-by: Andrey Kolkov <[email protected]> Assisted-by: LLM

Verdict
LGTM with non-blocking notes
Everything I blocked on last round is closed, and I checked each fix rather than reading the commit subjects. One note below, not a blocker.
What I verified on 01967b56d3
The topic-list probe is the one I most wanted to see land, so I tested it where it actually runs rather than on my laptop. The Job's command is /usr/bin/bash, the here-string is legal there, and inside the image the driver resolves from:
$ docker run --rm --entrypoint /bin/sh quay.io/strimzi/kafka:0.45.0-kafka-3.9.0 -c \
'/usr/bin/bash --version | head -1
/usr/bin/bash -c "set -euo pipefail
live=\$(printf \"topic-%06d\n\" \$(seq 1 20000))
if grep -qxF -- topic-000001 <<<\"\$live\"; then echo found; else echo MISROUTE; fi"'
GNU bash, version 5.1.8(1)-release (aarch64-redhat-linux-gnu)
found
20000 topics, the case that misrouted into --create before.
The \Q guards are the other one worth spelling out, because giving the colliding pair distinct shapes pinned the call that four rounds of tests had missed. Reverting each wrapper in turn:
:109 backup --describe passed=0 failed=1
:173 restore --describe passed=9 failed=1 <- was green through round 6
:189 restore --alter passed=9 failed=1
Also checked: backupTimeout now records a Warning on both the backup and restore paths, and Recorder is wired for all three reconcilers in main.go; METADATA_FILE defaults to the old path and the Job never sets it, so only the suite changes; .Mode lists all three values in the Go type and the generated CRD, byte for byte; {{ .Mode }} is still the only template action in the script, so the corrected comment is accurate. go test, helm unittest 22/22, the bats suite 24/24, and shellcheck -S warning are clean here.
On the --delete-config note: your answer on the thread settles it. An additive restore is a coherent contract for a metadata-only driver and the docs say so. Closed, not carried.

internal/backupcontroller/kafkastrategy_controller_test.go:566, the new test pins the warning string but not the Event that carries it
Caveats
Unit & controller testswas still running on this head when I finished, and no E2E run has been scheduled for it yet. I ran the same suites locally and they pass, but the pipeline has not said so itself.Require API owner review for sizeable API changesis red and my approval does not clear it: it wants one oflllamnyporkvaps, and both earlier approvals were dismissed by the push.- My review is static. Nothing here ran against a live broker or an S3 backend, so the SigV4 and
--connect-tobehaviour is still only checked at the argv level.

[MINOR] the new test pins the warning string but not the Event that carries it
This is the right fix for the silent fallback, and it is wired correctly: Recorder is set for all three reconcilers in cmd/backupstrategy-controller/main.go:251,261,271, so the Warning really does reach the object. Non-blocking, but worth one more line of test.
The case table now asserts that kafkaRunDeadline returns a non-empty message. Nothing asserts that anyone records it. I removed both call sites and kept the deadline value, and the package stayed green:
$ python3 - <<'PY'
p='internal/backupcontroller/kafkastrategy_controller.go'
s=open(p).read()
for obj in ('j','restoreJob'):
s=s.replace('\tif deadlineWarn != "" && r.Recorder != nil {\n\t\tr.Recorder.Event(%s, corev1.EventTypeWarning, "BackupTimeoutInvalid", deadlineWarn)\n\t}\n' % obj, '\t_ = deadlineWarn\n')
open(p,'w').write(s)
PY
$ go test ./internal/backupcontroller/... -count=1
ok github.com/cozystack/cozystack/internal/backupcontroller 5.432s
ok github.com/cozystack/cozystack/internal/backupcontroller/factory 2.133s
$ git checkout -- internal/backupcontroller/kafkastrategy_controller.go
So the guard that makes the fallback visible can be deleted by a later refactor without a single test going red, which is the shape the \Q-on-describe finding had for four rounds: the helper was pinned, the call site was not.
Cheap to close, because the harness already exists in this package. record.NewFakeRecorder(10) is used at internal/backupcontroller/backup_controller_test.go:49; reconcile a BackupJob whose BackupClass carries backupTimeout: "10s" and assert one event on the channel contains BackupTimeoutInvalid.
What this PR does
Adds a dedicated
strategy.backups.cozystack.io/KafkaGo driver that backs up the topic metadata of a Cozystack-managedKafkaapplication and wires it into the platformcozy-defaultflow — the counterpart to the app-specific drivers (CNPG, MariaDB, Altinity, MongoDB). It is a typed variant of the generic Job strategy: the controller renders a one-shot batch Job that talks to the Kafka Admin API, and adds on top an applicationRef Kind gate, aReadyprecondition on the StrimziKafkacluster, and a per-run object key via.BackupNameso distinct runs never overwrite each other.What it captures: every non-internal topic's partition count, replication factor and non-default configs (via
kafka-topics --describe), stored as one small object per run in the system bucket; restore recreates them withkafka-topics --create+kafka-configs --alter. Deliberately out of scope: message payloads (a volume-snapshot strategy's job), consumer-group offsets (a log position, only meaningful with a byte-identical data restore), ACLs, quotas, andKafkaUsers. No PITR. Restored topics are created directly through the Admin API, so on the target they are unmanaged (noKafkaTopicCR) — the accepted tradeoff of an Admin-API-only driver.Both restore flows are implemented: in-place recreates dropped topics into the source, and to-copy applies the source's topics onto a freshly-bootstrapped empty
Kafka(the "bootstrap a cluster, then apply the metadata state" flow).Contents:
api/backups/strategy/v1alpha1/kafka_types.go,internal/backupcontroller/kafkastrategy_controller.go(+ unit tests for its pure helpers),internal/backupcontroller/kafkatypes/(StrimziKafkareadiness gate), dispatch cases in both controllers +supportedBackupStrategyKinds(), scheme registration, generated CRD + deepcopy.strategy-kafka-default.yaml(gated on the bucket name), acozy-defaultbinding, read RBAC onkafka.strimzi.io/kafkas, and the Strimzi Kafka client image value.docs/operations/backup-classes.md.examples/backups/kafka-metadata/andhack/e2e-chainsaw/kafka-metadata/(kafka-3-metadata-roundtrip), an honest round-trip that proves a per-runretention.mssentinel survives both restores.The original
packages/apps/kafkachart is left untouched (it has no legacy backup mechanism).Validated:
go build ./...,go vet,go test ./internal/backupcontroller/...(pure helpers plus a reconcile Kind-gate test and the RestoreJob cleanup regression test),helm unitteston the package (which now rendersstrategy-kafka-default.yamland asserts its kind/name/artifactURITemplate), theselect-install/select-e2ebats suites,helm templateof the strategy CR,bash -nof the rendered script, andmake generate(clean). The end-to-end round-trip (kafka-3-metadata-roundtrip) is enabled and mapped like the sibling backup suites, so CI builds this branch's controller and runs it live against a fresh sandbox; it has not been merged-and-run before, so that first live run must go green before merge.Screenshots
