| ## @param {string} substrate="kubevirt" - Which infrastructure provider backs this pool's worker VMs. `kubevirt` runs them inside this cluster on KubeVirt, sized by `instanceType` and booted from a Talos disk image CDI streams from the image factory. `proxmox` runs them on an external Proxmox VE cluster through capmox, sized by `resources`, and cloned from a Talos VM template that already exists on the hypervisor. The two substrates take different Talos platform images and different sizing inputs, so switching an existing pool is not a supported in-place change: create a new pool instead. Changing it rolls the pool, because the worker machine template is named by a hash of its content. | ||

Enforce substrate at the Application API boundary. The generated schemas accept any string and do not declare substrate immutable. The aggregated Application REST handler uses openAPISchema only for defaulting, so its enum and x-kubernetes-validations do not reject direct API creates or updates. The Helm template rejects an unsupported value only later during reconciliation. Add @enum and @immutable to packages/apps/kubernetes-nodes/values.yaml and regenerate the schema artifacts, but also add explicit create-time enum validation and update-time immutability validation in the Application REST path. Do not edit generated files directly.

## @immutable is on the field in both charts, and the render refuses any value other than kubevirt/proxmox; an @enum in the generated schema would be the right addition on top of that. As you note, the aggregated Application handler uses the schema for defaulting only, so what actually holds a live cluster is the render-time refusal plus the lookup guard that reads the live Cluster.spec.infrastructureRef.kind (and the live MachineDeployment's template kind for a pool). The enum goes with the API owner review the reviewer asked for on these fields; left as a follow-up.

@themoriarti, you’re right: I missed ## @immutable`` on the node-pool field. My claim that it was absent was incorrect. The render-time value check and live-object lookup guards also prevent an in-place substrate switch during reconciliation. They do not reject an invalid value at the aggregated Application API boundary.
I’ll leave the enum and API-boundary validation with the API owner review. Would you like me to open a follow-up issue for that work?

Learning: In Cozystack's Kubernetes and KubernetesNodes applications, `substrate` is marked `## immutable` in the chart values. The aggregated Application REST handler uses the generated OpenAPI schema for defaulting, not validation. Helm rendering rejects unsupported substrate values, and live-object lookup guards compare the requested substrate with `Cluster.spec.infrastructureRef.kind` and, for node pools, the live MachineDeployment infrastructure template kind.

Marian Koreniuk (@themoriarti) NOT LGTM. The kubernetes chart renders the same at the default, but kubernetes-nodes does not. On top of that, a tenant-controlled value reaches the reconcile Job's shell, nothing stops a live cluster from being switched to the other substrate, and the Job's new substrate branches have no tests.
The default render decides the risk for every existing cluster, so I checked it first. I ran helm template with default values on the merge base (7b0c35b) and on a860df1, and again on current main (92d2eed) against a trial merge. For kubernetes-nodes I set explicit resources, because the u1.medium default needs a live lookup. kubernetes differs only in the random tokens in talos-secrets, and two renders of the base differ in the same fields. kubernetes-nodes differs in two objects: the talos-reconcile Role gains a delete rule on talosconfigtemplates, and the Job script changes, which moves the Job name from …-talos-reconcile-md0-dd931a to …-2f9b25. The render snapshots cover only nodegroup.yaml, which is why they stayed green. So every existing KubeVirt pool gets a new reconcile Job on upgrade (B1).
Business context: part 2 of the series behind #3481. It adds a substrate: kubevirt | proxmox switch to both managed-cluster charts, so worker VMs can run on an external Proxmox VE cluster through capmox while the control plane stays on Kamaji.
Blockers
B1: the KubeVirt path changes, and the PR body says it does not
Today the reconcile Job fails when the template it would write differs from the live one, because the template's spec is immutable. On main that shows up as TalosConfigTemplate.Spec is immutable from kubectl apply. After this PR the Job deletes the template and recreates it, on KubeVirt as well as on Proxmox. The upgrade re-runs the Job on every pool, so on any pool whose live template no longer matches the current render, the next Machines will boot a different machineconfig from the ones already running. That may be what we want. It is still a KubeVirt behaviour change in a Proxmox PR, and the description says "the KubeVirt path renders byte-for-byte what it rendered before". That sentence becomes the merge commit message. CI does not cover it either: e2e only installs fresh clusters, so the immutable branch never runs.
Please move the replace-on-immutable change to its own PR with an upgrade note. If it stays here, say so in the body and the release note, and test it (B2).
B2: nothing tests the Job's substrate branches, and one new assert cannot fail
I applied one mutation at a time and wrote down the predicted set of red test names before each run. After each run I restored the tree, and git status --porcelain came back empty every time. All 14 predictions matched. These mutations leave the whole suite green:
- Inverting the
substratecondition aroundSVC_IP(line 218). Every KubeVirt pool then waits for.status.loadBalancer.ingress[0].ipon a ClusterIP Service, times out after 10 minutes, and never writes its TalosConfigTemplate. 99/99 still pass. - Inverting the same condition around
nameservers(line 308). KubeVirt workers get an empty resolver list. 99/99 still pass. - Deleting
exit 1from the non-immutable*)branch.talos_tct_immutable_test.yaml:43matchesexit 1anywhere in the script, and the input-timeout path near the top already has one. - Changing the delete target to
"${RELEASE}". The assert only matches thekubectl delete talosconfigtemplateprefix. - Changing
ceiltofloorinnumCores. The only conversion case is 4 CPUs and 8Gi, where the rounding direction does not show. The PR body says the conversion rounds up and is covered bytests/substrate_proxmox_sizing_test.yaml, but that suite only tests the refusal. - Removing the proxmox gate from
templates/helmreleases/csi.yaml(159/159 pass). The kccm RBAC files andcsi/infra-cluster-service-account.yamlhave no proxmox case either. - Pinning the old-template retention
lookup(nodegroup.yaml:735) back toKubevirtMachineTemplate. The comment above that loop explains what it protects, and there is no proxmox test for it.
Each Job condition needs an assert for both branches on both substrates. The exit 1 assert should be anchored to the *) branch, and the delete target asserted in full. A sizing case where rounding shows would pin the conversion (1500m gives 2 cores, 8G gives 7630 MiB). The csi HelmRelease and kccm RBAC gates need a proxmox case, and the retention loop needs a kubernetesProvider case on proxmox.
B3: proxmox.dnsServers reaches the unquoted heredoc without shell escaping
The new nameserver entries are quoted for YAML but not escaped for the shell that runs this block. I rendered a proxmox pool with a dnsServers entry that contained $(...) and a pair of backticks. Then I pulled out the heredoc the same way hack/talos-reconcile-heredoc_test.bats does and ran it with sh. The shell ran both substitutions, and their output ended up in the nameservers list. The INVARIANT comment at line 276 of the same file says every tenant-controlled value in this block must be escaped or pattern-validated, and this new value is neither.
Anyone who can create a KubernetesNodes application can set this field. The Job pod has the parent cluster's Talos secrets in its environment, and its Role can read the Talos CA Secret and patch the parent KamajiControlPlane. The heredoc only runs once the parent Service has a LoadBalancer address, but a tenant can create that parent too. CodeRabbit raised this on 2026-09-05, the lines have not changed since, and my run shows the substitution really executes.
Validating each entry as an IP address at render time fixes it, since Talos nameservers are addresses and that also keeps the metacharacters out. The three replace calls that talosVersion uses would work too. Either way, the bats test needs a dnsServers case.
B4: nothing stops a substrate switch on a live cluster or pool, and the render does real damage
Neither chart guards the value after creation. substrate has no @immutable marker, and even with one, tests/clustername_drift_test.yaml notes that the marker is "only dashboard-enforced". That is why cluster also has the assertNoForeignPool lookup guard. CAPI v1.10.1 does not catch it either: its Cluster webhook forbids removing spec.infrastructureRef but lets its kind change.
Switching kubernetes from kubevirt to proxmox renders no KubevirtCluster, no kccm Deployment or RBAC, no kubevirt-csi controller or RBAC, and no in-tenant -csi HelmRelease. Flux then uninstalls the driver behind every existing PVC in the tenant. The same render adds a ProxmoxCluster and turns the apiserver Service into a LoadBalancer.
Switching kubernetes-nodes rolls every worker to the other substrate and drops the old template while it is still in use. The retention loop at nodegroup.yaml:735 looks up only the new kind, so the KubevirtMachineTemplate that the draining MachineSet still references is no longer rendered, and Helm deletes it. I checked this with a kubernetesProvider mock that had one MachineSet referencing one owned template. On kubevirt the template is kept. After the switch it is gone, which is the failure that loop's comment says it prevents. Nothing rejects a pool whose substrate differs from its parent's either, although the README says the two must match.
CodeRabbit asked for immutability on 2026-09-05. Its suggested XValidation marker on types.go would not survive make generate, because types.go is generated from values.yaml.
The marker belongs in both values.yaml files, as ## @immutable after the @param line. The guard that actually holds is a lookup like assertParentVersion: read the live Cluster.spec.infrastructureRef.kind and fail on a mismatch. The parent chart needs it for a switch, and the pool chart needs it for a switch and for a pool that differs from its parent. Both the firing path and the silent path can be tested with kubernetesProvider.
B5: the worker WorkloadMonitor does not work on proxmox
The worker monitor counts Pods, and a Proxmox worker has no Pod in this cluster. The controller (internal/controller/workloadmonitor_controller.go:603-729) lists the Pods in the namespace that match the selector and sets Operational=false when fewer than minReplicas of them are ready. On KubeVirt those Pods are the virt-launcher pods, whose template carries cluster.x-k8s.io/deployment-name (nodegroup.yaml:217). So a proxmox pool with minReplicas of 1 or more stays Operational=false, and through the lineage labels the application shows WorkloadsReady=False while its nodes are healthy. The test "still renders the WorkloadMonitor, which is substrate-agnostic" only checks that the object renders, not that the monitor works.
On proxmox the worker WorkloadMonitor should either be skipped or rendered without minReplicas, with a test for whichever you pick.
B6: the branch needs a rebase
The branch conflicts with main in one generated file, and regenerating it is the whole fix. git merge-tree against main 92d2eed conflicts only in packages/system/kubernetes-rd/cozyrds/kubernetes.yaml. In a scratch copy I took main's version of that file and re-ran make generate for both charts and controller-gen for the api module. Only that file changed. The auto-merged values.yaml, values.schema.json, README.md and types.go already match what the generators produce, and both chart suites pass on the merged tree (161 and 99 tests).
B7: text that is wrong at this head, or that records history instead of reasons
- PR body, which becomes the merge commit message:
- "The KubeVirt path renders byte-for-byte what it rendered before" (B1).
- "18 suites / 92 tests" for
kubernetes-nodes. helm-unittest 1.1.1 reports 21 suites and 99 tests at this head. - The sizing conversion "Covered by
tests/substrate_proxmox_sizing_test.yaml" (B2). - "the template has to be deleted for the Job to recreate it. This is not introduced here". 51aedc9 in this PR changed exactly that.
- "PR 3 supplies the Proxmox pair", which reads as planning vocabulary in
git log.
hack/talos-reconcile-heredoc_test.bats:14says the heredoc is "redirected to a file, then applied". At this head it is captured into a variable.- The INVARIANT comment at
talos-reconcile-job.yaml:276still describes "the unquotedcat <<EOF | kubectl applyheredoc". The construct is nowTCT_MANIFEST="$(cat <<EOF. - Two comments record history:
talos-reconcile-job.yaml:252-257("an earlier revision of this died oncan't create /tmp/tct.yaml") andtalos_tct_immutable_test.yaml:4("Before this, that failure stopped the Job"). ThereadOnlyRootFilesystemreason is enough by itself. nodegroup.yaml:569-571says the variable keeps its kubevirt name so the default render stays byte-identical, and that renaming it "would roll every live worker VM". The hash is computed over the rendered template, not over the variable name. I renamed$kubevirtmachinetemplateand the render was byte-identical, so the comment would only stop a harmless rename.- The commit message of a860df1 ("which this series is supposed to leave untouched", "Caught by e2e on the pull request") describes the PR workflow, not the change.
Non-blocking follow-ups
diskSizeis accepted on proxmox and then ignored. Workers keep the template's disk size, and changingdiskSizedoes not change the ProxmoxMachineTemplate hash. capmox v0.7.7 hasdisks.bootVolume.{disk,sizeGb}, which can only grow a disk.instanceType(defaultu1.medium) andstorageClass(defaultreplicated) also stay set and do nothing on proxmox. I would honourdiskSizethroughbootVolume, or state in the README that all three are ignored on proxmox.- This adds
substrate, aproxmoxblock and four new structs to two kinds inapi/apps/v1alpha1, which is published as a separate module. The API review gate only fires on a new group, a new resource or a breaking change, so it passed without an owner review. Removingsubstratelater would be a breaking change, so I would ask an API owner to review before merge. - The README should name one tradeoff. On proxmox the tenant apiserver Service gets its address from whatever pool the platform's load balancer uses by default, and the chart cannot choose a class or a pool. …ntegration (#4439) ## What this PR does Nominates @themoriarti (Marian Koreniuk) as a **Reviewer** for the Proxmox integration, following the process in [CONTRIBUTOR_LADDER.md](https://github.com/cozystack/cozystack/blob/main/CONTRIBUTOR_LADDER.md#reviewer): - `.github/CODEOWNERS`: adds @themoriarti as a code owner of `packages/system/capi-providers-infraprovider-proxmox/` and `packages/system/proxmox-*/` (Proxmox CCM and CSI). Each rule keeps the full `/packages/system/` owner set, so no existing owner loses coverage, and the catch-all invariant (`hack/codeowners-invariant.bats`) holds. - `MAINTAINERS.md`: adds him to the Reviewers table. The scope is deliberately narrow: shared code such as `packages/apps/kubernetes*`, `api/apps` and the generic in-cluster IPAM provider stays with the existing owners. ### Why Marian has maintained the Proxmox integration since the first Proxmox bundle and is now landing the Cluster API infrastructure provider, CCM and CSI (#4087, #4088, #4089). Against the Reviewer requirements: - well over 10 accepted PRs, contributing since 2024; - has reviewed more than 20 PRs; - in-depth knowledge of, and commitment to, the Proxmox area. **Sponsors:** @kvaps (Ænix) and @kingdonb (Urmanac), which satisfies the "at least one sponsor from a different employer" requirement. ### Notes for merging - The Proxmox package directories arrive with #4087 and #4089. Merging this PR after them is cleanest, though a rule for a path that does not exist yet is harmless. - GitHub silently ignores CODEOWNERS handles without write access. After merge, an org admin needs to add @themoriarti as a repository collaborator with the **Write** role (currently read). ### Downstream repositories - [x] No downstream repository is affected by this change - [ ] [cozystack/website](https://github.com/cozystack/website) - follow-up: - [ ] [cozystack/terraform-provider-cozystack](https://github.com/cozystack/terraform-provider-cozystack) - follow-up: - [ ] [cozystack/ansible-cozystack](https://github.com/cozystack/ansible-cozystack) - follow-up: - [ ] [cozystack/ccp](https://github.com/cozystack/ccp) - follow-up: - [ ] [cozystack/talm](https://github.com/cozystack/talm) - follow-up: - [ ] [cozystack/cozyhr](https://github.com/cozystack/cozyhr) - follow-up: - [ ] [cozystack/cozy-proxy](https://github.com/cozystack/cozy-proxy) - follow-up: - [ ] [cozystack/cozystack-telemetry-server](https://github.com/cozystack/cozystack-telemetry-server) - follow-up: - [ ] [cozystack/external-apps-example](https://github.com/cozystack/external-apps-example) - follow-up: - [ ] [cozystack/examples](https://github.com/cozystack/examples) - follow-up: - [ ] [cozystack/community](https://github.com/cozystack/community) - follow-up: ### Release note ```release-note docs(governance): add @themoriarti as Reviewer for the Proxmox integration. ``` <!-- This is an auto-generated comment: release notes by coderabbit.ai --> ## Summary by CodeRabbit * **Chores** * Expanded code ownership and review coverage for Proxmox integrations, including infrastructure provider, cloud controller manager, and storage components. Marian Koreniuk (@themoriarti) NOT LGTM. B1, B3, B4 and B5 are closed. B2 still has three survivors, B6 still needs a rebase, and B7 is mostly still open because the PR body has not changed.
This head is 30d5132 on merge base ff52aeb, and I also checked it against current main ce3eb30. Against the round I reviewed (a860df1), the range-diff shows 51aedc9 and a860df1 dropped, 4653a05, e26cbec and 30d5132 added, and the other seven commits the same except for the regenerated files the rebase changed. The replace-on-immutable work is fully gone from this head. The Role is identical to main, with no delete rule, talos_tct_immutable_test.yaml is gone, and the heredoc is back to cat <<EOF | kubectl apply. The resourceNames narrowing is not here either. The unnarrowed rule is already on main, so I am not blocking on it here.

- B1: I rendered both charts with default values on ff52aeb and on this head.
kubernetes-nodescame out byte-identical.kubernetesdiffers only in the random tokens intalos-secrets. I got the same result on a trial merge with main. - B3: I rendered a proxmox pool with each of these as a
dnsServersentry:$(id -u), a backtick pair,;id, a newline,',",\,%x,${HOME},::1$(id), andfe80::1%eth0. The render refused every one and named the entry. Forfe80::1,2001:db8::1and192.0.2.53I extracted the heredoc the way the bats file does and ran it undersh. Each came out unchanged, and nothing was substituted. The render also refuses a zone ID and an IPv4-mapped address. I think that is fine for a resolver list. - B4: On top of your cases I added three
kubernetesProvidercases in a scratch copy: a live ProxmoxCluster set back to kubevirt, a kubevirt pool under a proxmox Cluster, and a proxmox pool switched back to kubevirt. All three fail with the right message. A first install still renders offline. Dropping eitherincludeturns your own guard tests red. - B5: With
minReplicas: 2, the kubevirt monitor keepsminReplicasand the proxmox one has none. The controller treats a nilminReplicasas operational (workloadmonitor_controller.go:728).
Blockers
B2: three mutations still pass
Before each mutation I wrote down which tests should go red, and I restored the tree after each run. SVC_IP inversion, nameservers inversion, ceil→floor on each of numCores and memoryMiB, the retention lookup pinned to KubevirtMachineTemplate, both substrate guards, and the proxmox gate on eight of the ten gated templates now each turn the tests I predicted red. The nameservers inversion also turns the bats proxmox case red. These still pass:
- Removing the proxmox gate from
kccm/kccm_role_binding.yaml: 251/251 pass. The same happens forkccm/kccm_cluster_role_binding.yaml.substrate_proxmox_gates_test.yamllists both templates, but no assert names a RoleBinding or a ClusterRoleBinding. Without the gate, a proxmox cluster renders both bindings pointing at a Role, a ClusterRole and a ServiceAccount that it does not render. - Widening the IPv6 character class in
assertDnsServersAreAddressesto^.+$: 108/108 unit tests and 4/4 bats still pass. The bats refusal case uses$(id -u), which has no colon, so it never gets to the IPv6 branch. With the class widened,::1$(id -u)renders, and that is the input the validation is there to stop. The current regex does refuse it, so a refusal case with a colon in it would pin the class.
B6: rebase and regenerate
The branch still conflicts with main (ce3eb30) in two generated files, packages/system/kubernetes-rd/cozyrds/kubernetes.yaml and packages/system/kubernetes-nodes-rd/cozyrds/kubernetes-nodes.yaml. I did a trial merge that takes main's side of both. On it, both chart suites pass (23 suites and 251 tests; 29 suites, 156 tests and 12 snapshots), the default render of both charts matches main, and a proxmox pool renders the same objects as on this head. Both files still need regenerating.
The rebase also brings in the worker image selection from #4171 (osImage), and a proxmox pool honours only half of it. On the trial merge, osImage.factory.version: v1.12.6 on a proxmox pool changes the reconcile Job's installer image to …/installer/<schematic>:v1.12.6 and changes the Job's name. The worker disk still comes from the Proxmox template, whatever Talos is on it. So one field sets the in-guest upgrade target but not the boot image. When you rebase, either refuse osImage on proxmox or document which half of it applies.
B7: text
The PR body becomes the merge commit message, and it is unchanged since my last review:
- "
apps/kubernetes20 suites / 159 tests;apps/kubernetes-nodes18 suites / 92 tests". This head reports 23/251 and 23/108. - The sizing conversion is "Covered by
tests/substrate_proxmox_sizing_test.yaml". The rounding case is insubstrate_branches_test.yaml. The sizing suite only tests the refusal. - "PR 3 supplies the Proxmox pair" is still planning vocabulary.
The byte-for-byte sentence and the immutable paragraph are true at this head, so those two can stay.
Commit messages. Every body lands on main:
- 4653a05: the subject says "found in review", and the body says it "restores the property the PR description claims".
- e26cbec: the body describes the mutation session ("Seven mutations, one at a time, each reverted afterwards … 99/99 passed") instead of what the tests pin.
- 30d5132: the body is about the split-out branch ("with both branches merged", "Found by merging the two branches locally"), and what it says is wrong. It says the proxmox case matched
cat <<EOF | kubectl applyand that "the two cases that predate it already use the shape-tolerant pattern". The diff actually changes the first pre-existing case (line 54). The proxmox case (line 164) and the second pre-existing case (line 89) still match^cat <<EOF \| kubectl apply. A heredoc captured into a variable would still break both of them. This change belongs on the branch that changes the heredoc's shape, applied to all three cases there.
Comments:
kubernetes/templates/_helpers.tpl:215: the comment says the value "reaches the reconcile Job's unquoted heredoc". The parent chart has no reconcile Job. HerednsServersis written intoProxmoxCluster.spec.dnsServersthroughtoYaml. In both copies, "the only tenant-controlled value in these charts that reaches" the heredoc is also wrong.talos.version,talos.schematicID,talos.installerRepositoryandtalos.registryMirrorsreach it too, escaped, as the INVARIANT comment says. "rendered with a substitution in it, the Job's shell ran it" describes history, not a reason.kubernetes/templates/_helpers.tpl:240("16 objects in a default render") andtests/substrate_switch_guard_test.yaml("sixteen objects fewer") put a count on a set that the next template change will make wrong.kubernetes-nodes/templates/nodegroup.yaml:570-573("now hold either kind; the names are historical … left out of this change only to keep the diff to the substrate") narrates this change. Either rename the variables or drop the comment.kubernetes-nodes/values.yaml:134: "Changing it rolls the pool" is no longer what happens, because the chart now refuses the change on a live pool. This text also goes into the README, the schema and the CRD.
Non-blocking follow-ups
- The parent chart's
assertDnsServersAreAddresseshas no test. Removing itsincludeleaves 251/251 green. The value does not reach a shell there, so this is only about coverage. - CodeRabbit's thread at
nodegroup.yaml:131has no reply. It says Proxmox accepts a targetstorageonly for full clones, and this PR makes linked clones the default. I have not checked this against capmox. If it holds, proxmox.storagewithfull: falseshould be refused at render time. - Follow-ups 1 to 3 from my last review (
diskSize/instanceType/storageClassbeing ignored on proxmox, an API owner review of the newapi/apps/v1alpha1fields, and the LoadBalancer exposure note) still apply. The bisect follow-up is closed, because the commits it was about are gone.
CI: at this head the only runs are PR Auto-Label, PR size label and DCO, all green. GitHub does not start pull_request workflows while the branch conflicts, so none of the test workflows have run yet.

This changes the first pre-existing case. The proxmox case at line 164 and the case at line 89 still match ^cat <<EOF \| kubectl apply, so the variable-capture form would still break them. The change belongs on the branch that changes the heredoc's shape, applied to all three cases (B7).

The mutations that were already red still are: the SVC_IP and nameservers inversions (nameservers also turns bats case 6 red),ceil→flooron each sizing field, the retention lookup pinned toKubevirtMachineTemplate, both substrate guards, and the gate on each of the other eight templates. Removing the newosImagecheck turnssubstrate_branches_test.yamlred. - B6:
git merge-treeagainst main is clean. On the merged tree, the only file that differs from this head is an unrelatedhack/e2e-chainsaw/README.md. Runningmake generatein both packages changes nothing except droppingx-cozystack-name, and that comes from my local generator being older: main has the key. On kubevirt it never fires. B8: conflict markers in six commits
The regenerated ApplicationDefinition for kubernetes carries an unresolved git stash conflict in six commits. e6510f184 added it to packages/system/kubernetes-rd/cozyrds/kubernetes.yaml: <<<<<<< Updated upstream, =======, >>>>>>> Stashed changes at lines 35 to 39, one side with x-cozystack-name and one without. The file stays that way through ddcff2e36, 4983b5be7, d19c6db9e, 794b9474e and 4801e643d. Only 5a17e3200 resolves it. At those six commits the ApplicationDefinition does not parse (could not find expected ':', line 36). This PR merges with a merge commit, so all six commits land on main, and a bisect over this range stops on a broken kubernetes package. Please resolve it in e6510f184, so every commit carries the regenerated file.
B7: three commit messages
Your reply says the messages I named "are gone with the commits", but the text is still on the branch:
5a17e3200: the subject still ends in "found in review", and the body still says the change "restores the property the PR description claims".a1e1e561e: the body still opens with the mutation session: "Seven mutations, one at a time, each reverted afterwards, left the suites entirely green", followed by the per-mutation "99/99 passed" / "159/159 passed" counts. What the tests pin is in the second half of that body. The first half is history.5d583605e: "corrected in the same pass", "since the guard added earlier in this series", and "measured on the rebased branch" describe how the branch was made, not the change.
Every one of these bodies lands on main as written.
B9: the bats comment describes code that is not in the tree
The new comment above the awk pattern points at code that exists only on another branch. At hack/talos-reconcile-heredoc_test.bats:242-245 it says the pattern has to match "the branch that replaces an immutable TalosConfigTemplate", which captures the heredoc into a variable, "when the two land together". Neither this tree nor main has that form. A reader cannot check the comment, and it stays wrong if that branch changes or never lands. The pattern is fine. Say what it matches (cat <<EOF at line start or right after =$( or ="$() and leave the other branch out.

substrate_branches_test.yaml(lines 3-12) andsubstrate_proxmox_gates_test.yaml(lines 9-11) tell how the tests came about ("before them … left the whole suite green", "Written after checking that …"). The contract part can stay. The history reads better in the commit. - The
osImageparagraph in the PR body sits below CodeRabbit's auto-generated block, so it ends up after the bot summary in the merge commit. It belongs in the Shape or Sizing section. - CodeRabbit's
storage-with-linked-clone thread and the three follow-ups from my first review still stand, as you said.
CI: Pull Request, Pre-Commit, Codegen Drift, CodeQL and API Review Gate are green on this head. E2E Tests was still running when I wrote this (the fork E2E run started at 21:09 UTC).

This describes a heredoc form that neither this tree nor main produces, and it stays wrong if the other branch changes or never lands (B9). Say what the pattern matches (cat <<EOF at line start or right after =$( or ="$() and leave the other branch out.

Fixed: the comment says what the pattern matches (cat <<EOF at the start of a line or right after =$( / ="$() and nothing about another branch (4bc6621).
Worker pools are already Talos machines created by Cluster API; only the
substrate underneath them is fixed to KubeVirt. This adds `substrate:
kubevirt|proxmox` and swaps exactly two things: the machine template object
and every reference to it. Autoscaler capacity annotations, kubelet
reservations, MachineDeployment, MachineHealthCheck, WorkloadMonitor and the
talos-reconcile Job are substrate-agnostic and rendered once, which is why
this is a branch in the existing chart rather than a second copy of it.
The default path is unchanged down to the bytes: the render snapshot and all
15 existing suites pass untouched, and the hash-named template keeps its
variable name so no live worker VM rolls on upgrade.
Five things the Proxmox path must do differently, each learned from a
failure that pointed somewhere else:
- Skip capmox's guest-agent and cloud-init-status probes. Talos ships
neither, and left on they leave the VM booted and the Machine stuck on
"error waiting for agent: the operation has timed out". This is the same
class of problem `virtualMachineBootstrapCheck.checkStrategy: none` solves
for CAPK's SSH probe; capmox's CRD names TalOS in the skipCloudInitStatus
description.
- Clone a template carrying the nocloud image, not openstack. capmox injects
bootstrap data as a nocloud ISO, and an openstack image ignores it exactly
as silently as a nocloud image ignores the configdrive the KubeVirt path
depends on.
- Pass templateTags through verbatim. capmox compares the template's tag set
with slices.Equal after sorting, so a selector listing a subset matches
nothing and reports "found 0 VM templates with tags ..." while the tags are
plainly present.
- Require resources.cpu and resources.memory. Proxmox has no
VirtualMachineClusterInstancetype, so the lookup that normally supplies
effective CPU and memory has nothing to read — and those two numbers feed
the kubelet reservations and the autoscaler capacity annotations. A pool
that cannot state them would be scheduled against invented capacity, so it
is refused at render time. KubeVirt-only knobs (gpus, logSerialConsole,
podCpuLimit/Request) are refused too rather than accepted and ignored.
- Refuse proxmox.storage unless full is true. A target storage is a full-clone
parameter: a linked clone always lives on the template's storage, and both
Proxmox ("parameter 'storage' not allowed for linked clones") and capmox's
own CRD ("Must set full=true when specifying storage") reject the pair.
Left to them, a pool with storage set and a linked clone fails at apply time
with an error about a ProxmoxMachineTemplate the operator never wrote;
failing the render names the two values instead.
The Talos image is not a chart input on this path: capmox clones a template
that already exists on the hypervisor, so building and rotating that template
is an operator responsibility with no equivalent on the KubeVirt side.

Companion to the same switch in kubernetes-nodes. The control plane is Kamaji on either substrate, so this changes exactly one object — the one Cluster.infrastructureRef points at — plus the two tenant addons that exist only because the workers are KubeVirt VMs living in this cluster. A KubevirtCluster needs no spec: its workers are in the same cluster and reach the apiserver over the pod network. A ProxmoxCluster addresses an external hypervisor, so it carries what capmox cannot infer — which Proxmox nodes may host VMs, which addresses they may take, and who resolves names for them. controlPlaneEndpoint stays absent on both: the cluster.x-k8s.io/managed-by annotation hands that to Kamaji. The address pool is required rather than defaulted. capmox has no DHCP mode; it allocates from an InClusterIPPool built out of ProxmoxCluster.spec.ipv4Config, so an unset pool is not a smaller configuration but a ProxmoxCluster that never reaches Ready and worker Machines that wait on it forever. Refusing at render time turns that into a message instead of a silence. The KubeVirt cloud-controller-manager, its cloud-config and the kubevirt-csi driver are gated off on the proxmox path. They reach the workers' VirtualMachines and DataVolumes in this cluster; on Proxmox those objects do not exist, and leaving them rendered would put controllers in the tenant reconciling nothing. Their Proxmox equivalents are separate packages and land separately. The default path is unchanged: rendering it before and after this commit differs only in the per-render random bootstrap tokens, and all 19 existing suites pass untouched. Two corrections found by building a real tenant cluster on Proxmox rather than by rendering the chart. Each produced a symptom that pointed away from its cause. capmox skips control-plane endpoint validation only when spec.externalManagedControlPlane is set. Kamaji owns the endpoint here, so the field was semantically true all along and merely absent — and on an absent controlPlaneEndpoint the webhook does not return a validation error, it panics (internal/webhook/proxmoxcluster_webhook.go:105). The install failed with a nil-pointer stack trace out of an admission webhook, which reads like a broken provider rather than a missing field. The cluster.x-k8s.io/managed-by annotation now renders only on the KubeVirt path. It tells Cluster API the infrastructure object is owned by something outside CAPI, so the Cluster controller never sets an ownerRef on it — and capmox's reconciler exits at "Waiting for Cluster Controller to set OwnerRef on ProxmoxCluster" without ever creating the InClusterIPPool its workers draw addresses from. Harmless on KubevirtCluster, which nothing reconciles; load-bearing on ProxmoxCluster, which capmox must. With both in place the object reaches Ready=True, the pool is created, and the Cluster reaches Provisioned. The proxmox suite's ProxmoxCluster case asserts both: the field is set and the annotation is absent. Signed-off-by: Marian Koreniuk <[email protected]> Assisted-by: LLM
A full clone on a ZFS pool configured with `sparse 0` reserves the whole volsize the moment the VM is created: 10.2G for a worker whose Talos image occupies 337M. A linked clone writes only its own increment — measured at 8K for the same worker on the same host — because it shares the template's base snapshot until it diverges. The cost is that the clone holds that snapshot, so the template cannot be rotated while any linked clone still references it. That is bounded rather than permanent: consolidation detaches each worker 24 hours after creation, so template rotation is blocked for at most a day. Consolidation is not a chart concern, but two of its constraints are worth recording where the flag is set, because both were discovered by testing on a live host rather than from the docs. A linked clone can only be detached by moving its disks to a *different* storage — Proxmox refuses a same-storage move outright. And both disks must move: leaving efidisk0 behind keeps the template pinned just as effectively as the system disk would. Set full: true for a pool that must be independent of the template from the first second. Signed-off-by: Marian Koreniuk <[email protected]> Assisted-by: LLM
…ey can reach A worker on the proxmox substrate is a VM on the hypervisor network, not a Pod in this cluster. It was handed two addresses only an in-cluster consumer can route to: the apiserver as a ClusterIP, and the management cluster's CoreDNS ClusterIP as its resolver. The VM booted, the Machine reported Ready with a providerID, the disk was where it should be — and no CSR ever arrived. Nothing in that picture points at an address. The control-plane chart now publishes the tenant apiserver as a LoadBalancer on the proxmox path, putting the endpoint on the network the workers share, and the pool's reconcile Job reads the Service's LoadBalancer address instead of its ClusterIP for the host entry the workers dial. The nameservers follow the same reasoning: proxmox pools carry their own resolvers rather than pointing at a CoreDNS they cannot reach, and the chart refuses to render a pool that has not named any. KubeVirt keeps the ClusterIP on both counts. Its workers are in this cluster, where a ClusterIP is the right answer and a LoadBalancer address would be an unnecessary one. Verified end to end on a real tenant cluster: the node joins, its CSR is approved, and cilium, konnectivity and coredns come up in the tenant. One operational note this surfaced, not caused by it: TalosConfigTemplate.spec is immutable, so the reconcile Job cannot rewrite an endpoint that has already been published — the template has to be deleted for the Job to recreate it. That matters only when an existing cluster's apiserver address changes. Signed-off-by: Marian Koreniuk <[email protected]> Assisted-by: LLM
The proxmox blocks added to the Kubernetes and KubernetesNodes values carry string slices, and the generated deepcopy never learned about them: a copy shared allowedNodes, dnsServers and templateTags with its original instead of owning them. Cause was procedural rather than conceptual — the per-package `make generate` under packages/apps regenerates the chart schema and the Go types, but the deepcopy functions come from the repository-root target. … guards Nothing failed when `full` was wrong: the pool came up, the workers joined, and each one quietly cost the whole template disk instead of the increment — 10.2 GiB against 8 KiB on a ZFS store. A default whose only symptom is disk usage is exactly the kind that drifts, so both it and its override are now asserted. The bridge and dnsServers guards were two of the guards on this path with no coverage. Both fire on absence, so the suite omits each and the tests supply the other one back; declaring either at suite level would make it impossible to take away, which is why the sizing guard already lives alone. The storage guard is the third: `storage` with a linked clone is refused and the message names both values, while `storage` with `full: true` reaches the ProxmoxMachineTemplate. Each assert goes red on the edit it exists for: flipping the default reds the clone suite, deleting a guard reds the guard suite. Signed-off-by: Marian Koreniuk <[email protected]> Assisted-by: LLM
…rate switch, drop the Pod threshold on proxmox Three faults in the proxmox substrate, none of which the render refused. 1. proxmox.dnsServers reached the reconcile Job's shell unescaped. The Job applies the worker TalosConfigTemplate through an unquoted heredoc, so every byte of its body is subject to parameter expansion and command substitution at Job runtime. The INVARIANT comment above that block says each tenant-controlled value must be shell-escaped or pattern-validated; the new nameserver list was neither. `quote` there is YAML quoting. Rendered with `$(id -u)` and a backtick pair in dnsServers, extracted the way hack/talos-reconcile-heredoc_test.bats does and run under sh, the shell executed both and put their output in the worker's resolver list. The Job's pod holds the parent cluster's Talos token, cluster id, cluster secret and bootstrap token in its environment, and its Role can read the Talos CA and patch the parent KamajiControlPlane. Each entry is now validated as an IPv4 or IPv6 address at render time, in both charts. Validation rather than escaping because Talos takes addresses here: an address cannot carry a metacharacter, so the property holds by construction, and the ordinary mistake of writing a hostname is caught in the same move. IPv6 is matched on its character set rather than its full grammar — what matters is which bytes may reach the shell, and the apiserver rejects a malformed address anyway. 2. Nothing stopped a live cluster or pool from being switched between substrates. `substrate` had no immutability of any kind, and the `## @immutable` marker this adds is dashboard-enforced only, so both charts now read the live object. Switching a cluster removes the KubevirtCluster, the cloud-controller-manager, the kubevirt-csi controller and the in-tenant -csi HelmRelease with all their RBAC from the render. Flux then uninstalls the CSI driver behind every PVC the tenant has. CAPI does not prevent it — its Cluster webhook forbids removing spec.infrastructureRef but admits a change of kind. Switching a pool rolls every worker to the other hypervisor and drops the machine template the draining MachineSet still references, because the retention loop looks up only the kind the new substrate uses. A pool whose substrate differs from its parent's was not rejected either, though the README says the two must match. Both guards are inert offline, like assertNoForeignPool and assertParentVersion beside them: with no apiserver the lookup is empty and a first install renders. 3. The worker WorkloadMonitor reported a proxmox pool as broken. The controller lists Pods matching the monitor's selector and sets Operational=false while fewer than minReplicas are ready. On kubevirt those Pods are the virt-launcher Pods. A proxmox worker is a VM on another machine with no Pod here, so the count is always zero and any threshold pinned the pool — and through the lineage labels its whole application — to WorkloadsReady=False while every node was healthy. The monitor still renders for the dashboard and the lineage; what it no longer carries on proxmox is a threshold counted in Pods. Two smaller things. The wait-loop log line is written per substrate, so a default kubevirt render of kubernetes-nodes is byte-identical to main and no existing pool gets a new reconcile Job on upgrade. And the comment claiming a rename of $kubevirtmachinetemplate would roll every live worker VM is replaced: the hash is taken over the rendered template, not the variable name, so renaming it leaves the render byte-identical. …te branch Every `if substrate` in both charts is asserted on both sides, so an inverted condition cannot pass: - the reconcile Job reads SVC_IP from the LoadBalancer status on proxmox and from the ClusterIP on kubevirt; - the machineconfig carries the pool's nameservers on proxmox and none on kubevirt; - the proxmox gate on each kubevirt-only template in the parent chart, the two RBAC bindings included, so a proxmox cluster renders no binding to a Role, ClusterRole or ServiceAccount it does not render; - the sizing conversion at 1500m and 8G, where ceil and floor disagree (2 cores and 7630 MiB against 1 and 7629); - the old-template retention loop keeps a ProxmoxMachineTemplate a MachineSet still references; - the proxmox worker monitor carries no Pod threshold while the kubevirt one does; - a live cluster and a live pool refuse a substrate switch while a first install still renders; - both charts refuse a dnsServers entry that is not an address, the parent chart included, where the value reaches ProxmoxCluster.spec.dnsServers. The negations carry `any: true`: without it a negated containsDocument passes whether or not the document is in the render. hack/talos-reconcile-heredoc_test.bats gains the dnsServers cases: the render refuses a command substitution and names the entry; an entry with a colon in it is refused too, which pins the IPv6 branch of the validation and not only the IPv4 one; and a real address survives the Job's shell unchanged. The heredoc is extracted by shape — `cat <<EOF` at the start of a line or right after `=$(` / `="$(` — so the same case keeps working whichever way the Job writes it. … half of it cozystack#4171 gave a worker pool an osImage, choosing where its system disk comes from: a CDI clone of a shared golden image, or an HTTP import from an Image Factory. A Proxmox worker's disk comes from neither. capmox clones a VM template that already carries Talos, and nothing in this chart can change what that template holds. Half of the field would still appear to work, which is why it is refused rather than ignored. osImage.factory.version reaches the machineconfig's installer image and changes the reconcile Job, so a pool could set it, watch the Job roll, and end up running one Talos while booting another: v1.12.6 moves the installer to .../installer/<schematic>:v1.12.6 and leaves the ProxmoxMachineTemplate untouched. osImage.builtin has no meaning here at all. Nothing is lost by refusing it: the installer target on this substrate is settable through talos.version and talos.schematicID, which do reach it. The branches suite gains the refusal case. The substrate parameter's description said changing the value "rolls the pool". The chart refuses the change on a live pool, and the description says so; it reaches the README, the values schema and the CRD. Signed-off-by: Marian Koreniuk <[email protected]> Assisted-by: LLM

Marian Koreniuk (@themoriarti) LGTM. The three blockers from my last review are fixed, and the new storage refusal is covered by tests.
I reviewed 8722462 on merge base 564f540, checked against current main cffe509. The range-diff against 5d58360 maps all ten commits one to one. ceb7119a1 is unchanged. Across the other nine: the stash conflict is resolved in the first commit, the new storage refusal lands in 85f576756 with its tests in 33e1de52d, the parent chart's dnsServers test lands in 4bc6621a5, the osImage test moves into 872246206, and messages and test header comments are reworded.
Closed
- B8: none of the ten commits has a conflict marker in any file it touches, and every YAML file it touches outside
templates/parses. The two ApplicationDefinitions parse at every commit. The same check reports 3 markers on the olde6510f184, so it does find them. I also ran both helm suites and the heredoc bats at each commit: all green, which matches the "each of the ten commits passes both suites" line in the body. - B7: the phrases I quoted are gone from all three messages, and I found no other review or planning wording on the branch.
- B9: the comment above the awk pattern now says what it matches and nothing about another branch.
- Follow-up 1 from last round is done: removing the
assertDnsServersAreAddressesinclude fromcluster.yamlturnssubstrate_proxmox_test.yamlred (1 of 314). Removing the new storage guard turnssubstrate_proxmox_clone_test.yamlred (1 of 160). The header comments from follow-up 2 now state the contract only, and theosImageparagraph from follow-up 3 has moved into the Shape section. - A default kubevirt
kubernetes-nodesrender is still byte-identical to main, and so is one withosImage.factory.version: v1.12.6.
Counts on this head: kubernetes 26 suites, 314 tests. kubernetes-nodes 29 suites, 160 tests, 12 snapshots. The heredoc bats passes 6 of 6. These match the body.
Non-blocking
- In
872246206the paragraph about thesubstratedescription has one 115-column line left from the edit. The fix it describes also belongs in517baf945: that commit adds the switch guard, but the description keeps saying "rolls the pool" until872246206. - The Downstream section says "no
hack/change", but the PR editshack/talos-reconcile-heredoc_test.bats. It is a test file and does not match any trigger, so the conclusion holds. The sentence goes into the merge commit, so it should say that instead.
CI: Pull Request, Pre-Commit, Codegen Drift, CodeQL and API Review Gate are green on this head. E2E Tests is still running (fork E2E run started 15:19 UTC), and merge waits for it.

…ster IPAM as optional packages (#4087) ## What this PR does **Series behind #3481** — three separable pull requests: 1. **#4087 — Cluster API providers** (capmox + in-cluster IPAM) 2. #4088 — the `substrate` switch in `kubernetes` and `kubernetes-nodes` 3. #4089 — the Proxmox CSI driver and cloud-controller-manager #4087 and #4088 share no files and can be reviewed in parallel. #4089 builds on #4088. --- This is the provisioning layer #3481 asks to specify first: the part that creates the VMs. Neither of the other two is needed to review it. ### What it adds Two Cluster API providers, packaged the way the existing KubeVirt provider is — vendored components, `gzip -9 -n` for a reproducible artifact, a `make components` target that regenerates it from the upstream release and checks the downloads against the SHA-256 sums the Makefile pins: | Package | Version | Contract | |---|---|---| | `capi-providers-infraprovider-proxmox` | capmox v0.7.7 | v1beta1 | | `capi-providers-ipam-in-cluster` | CAIP v1.0.3 | v1beta1 | capmox v0.7.7 rather than the current v0.9.x on purpose: from v0.8 it declares contract `v1beta2`, which the CAPI core shipped here (v1.10.1) does not serve. Both join the `iaas` bundle as **opt-in** packages, where the KubeVirt infrastructure provider is unconditional. The asymmetry is deliberate: capmox drives a hypervisor outside the cluster and needs a Secret holding a Proxmox API token, which capi-operator reads before it installs anything — with no Secret the provider is never deployed at all. Enabling it by default would ask every Cozystack install that has no Proxmox to supply hypervisor credentials. ```yaml bundles: enabledPackages: - cozystack.capi-provider-infra-proxmox # brings IPAM with it - cozystack.capi-provider-ipam-in-cluster # also enableable on its own ``` Enabling capmox emits the IPAM provider automatically — capmox allocates worker addresses from an `InClusterIPPool` and has no DHCP mode, so on its own it never gets a `ProxmoxCluster` to `Ready`. IPAM stays independently enableable, since assigning addresses is a generic Cluster API concern. Naming capmox in `enabledPackages` while disabling IPAM stops the render. The cluster would catch that combination on its own — the capmox `PackageSource` depends on the IPAM `Package`, so with that `Package` absent capmox goes `Ready=False` with `DependenciesNotReady` and no `HelmRelease` is created — but it would not say why. Failing the render names the two conflicting list entries at the moment someone writes them, instead of leaving a condition to decode. ### Why the earlier attempt did not produce a VM #1927's blocker — "ProxmoxMachine does not produce a VM" — was not a capmox incompatibility. It was four independent causes, each of which only became visible once the previous one was cleared: 1. **`PROXMOX_URL` included `/api2/json`.** capmox appends that itself, so every call went to `/api2/json/api2/json/…` and returned 501. 2. **No IPAM provider.** `no matches for kind "InClusterIPPool"`; the `ProxmoxCluster` never reached `Ready` and every `ProxmoxMachine` sat in `WaitingForClusterInfrastructure`. 3. **`templateSelector.matchTags` is set equality, not containment** (`slices.Equal` after sort). A template carrying four tags is not selected by naming one of them: `found 0 VM templates with tags`. 4. **capmox waits for the qemu-guest-agent, which Talos does not ship.** `error waiting for agent: timed out` — cleared with `checks.skipQemuGuestAgent` and `skipCloudInitStatus`. None of these are in the provider. They are packaging and configuration, which is why the earlier work could look complete and still never boot a machine. ### Evidence Run on Proxmox VE 9.2.11 with Talos v1.13.6 and Cozystack's CAPI stack (core v1.10.1, CABPT v0.6.12, Kamaji control-plane provider v0.19.0): ``` $ kubectl get proxmoxmachine, machine -n tenant-proxmox proxmoxmachine/kubernetes-px-md0-… Ready=True VMProvisioned=True machine/kubernetes-px-md0-… Running proxmox://0ef88cc1-6aea-4563-af64-344d8060d5c0 $ qm list 106 kubernetes-px-md0-jmzds-h9npx running ``` The machine boots Talos from the nocloud ISO, reads the machineconfig capmox writes, and joins. That is the layer #69 called a hard blocker. ### What this PR does not claim - One Proxmox node, one tenant cluster, manual runs — there is no e2e coverage for Proxmox in CI, and this PR does not add any. - It does not make Proxmox a supported platform. It makes the provisioning layer reviewable, which #3481 names as the precondition for that conversation. - It does not touch `capi-providers-core`. The same drift check, pointed at that package, shows that the `startupProbe` from #2946 never reached the shipped blob; that fix changes what every new install runs and is #4483, with its own release note. - Nothing here exposes `ProxmoxCluster.spec.credentialsRef` to a tenant, and nothing should: `capmox-manager-role` grants get/list/watch/patch on Secrets cluster-wide and that field takes a namespace. Whatever renders a `ProxmoxCluster` for a tenant in the rest of the series has to keep the field out of tenant hands. ### Testing `make unit-tests` — exit 0. New suites: `packages/core/platform/tests/sources_capi_provider_proxmox_test.yaml` and `bundles_proxmox_wiring_test.yaml` (both bundle paths, the enable/disable precedence, and the refusal above). Every negated `containsDocument` in the wiring suite carries `any: true`; without it the negation passes whether or not the document is in the render. Three mutations, each reverted afterwards — emitting the capmox `Package` unconditionally, emitting the IPAM `Package` unconditionally, and dropping the `disabledPackages` check from `$proxmoxEnabled` — each turn red the tests named after the property they break, and the unmutated chart stays green (44 suites, 198 tests). `hack/capi-provider-components_test.bats` covers both new provider packages: the blob and the YAML are the same bytes; the Makefile version, the ConfigMap name and `spec.version` are one value — `applied-spec-hash` covers the provider spec and the config Secret but not the ConfigMap, so a bump that regenerates the files while `spec.version` stays behind installs the old provider silently; and the vendored files match the SHA-256 sums the Makefile pins, so the pin holds even when nobody runs `make components`. The render was compared against `main` for five configurations (defaults, `isp-full`, `isp-full-generic` with paas, an unrelated `enabledPackages`, and `disabledPackages` naming IPAM). No line is removed in any of them and the `Package` count is unchanged; the only additions are the two `PackageSource` objects, which the chart renders for every package, optional or not. ### Screenshots Not applicable — no UI change. ### Downstream repositories I walked the trigger map in `docs/agents/contributing.md` against this diff, file by file. What it matches is below. **No box is ticked**, because every follow-up it points at depends on a decision that is not mine to make: #3481 asks whether Proxmox becomes a supported platform at all, and writing its documentation or its Terraform schema before that is answered would be work built on an assumption. …x-backed tenants (#4089) ## What this PR does **Series behind #3481** — three separable pull requests: 1. #4087 — the Cluster API providers (capmox + in-cluster IPAM) 2. #4088 — the `substrate` switch in `kubernetes` and `kubernetes-nodes` 3. #4089 — the Proxmox CSI driver and cloud-controller-manager #4088 has merged, so this diff is the eight commits on top of it: `proxmox.pool`, `csi-proxmox`, `ccm-proxmox`, `delete.yaml`, the tests, the e2e suite, one README sentence on token privileges, and the reconcile Job's replace-on-immutable step for existing clusters. The `substrate` value this gates on is on `main`. ### One chain, not two components Storage and the cloud-controller-manager are one chain, not two components: ``` kubelet --cloud-provider=external → taint node.cloudprovider.kubernetes.io/uninitialized → CCM applies topology.kubernetes.io/region|zone + providerID → CSI node plugin starts → PVC binds ``` The CSI node plugin reads region and zone off its own Node and exits fatally without them: ``` F main.go:126] Failed to get region or zone for node: …, region: , zone: , see documentation about topology labels ``` Those labels come from the cloud-controller-manager, and the CCM ignores a Node until the kubelet's `--cloud-provider=external` has tainted it. Shipping the CSI driver alone gives a tenant a StorageClass, a healthy controller, and a node plugin in CrashLoopBackOff. The CSI driver has no equivalent knob for this. Its `features.provider` accepts `default` and `capmox` and validates neither, so an unrecognised value falls through to the default path — the key is therefore not set at all. The cloud-controller-manager is the opposite case: `capmox` is a real mode there and is set, because the default one writes a Node providerID of `proxmox://<node>/<vmid>` while capmox has already written `proxmox://<SMBIOS UUID>` on the Machine. So the CCM has no `enabled` switch and its credentials reference is required: on this substrate, a cluster without a CCM is a cluster where every worker keeps the `uninitialized` taint and nothing schedules. A chart that cannot name the Secret should stop rather than render that. The CSI release depends on cilium only; the CCM is a Deployment of this chart, not a HelmRelease, so nothing in the tenant can depend on it — the node plugin waits on the labels the CCM applies, which is the ordering that matters. ### Packaging | Package | Chart | App | |---|---|---| | `packages/system/proxmox-csi` | proxmox-csi-plugin 0.5.12 | v0.20.0 | The vendored chart is the tenant-side half only. It **drops the upstream `values.talos.yaml` preset**, which pins the workloads onto `node-role.kubernetes.io/control-plane` and `node.cloudprovider.kubernetes.io/platform: nocloud`: a Kamaji tenant has no control-plane nodes at all — its control plane is a Deployment in the management cluster — so that preset leaves the components unschedulable. It is published as a component of the existing `kubevirt` variant of `kubernetes-application` rather than in a new variant: a second variant would rename the artifacts of all eighteen tenant addons, and exactly one component differs between the substrates. The cloud-controller-manager is not a vendored chart. It is a Deployment the `kubernetes` chart renders itself (`templates/ccm-proxmox/controller.yaml`), because it runs here, in the management cluster, and there is nothing of it to install in the tenant. Credentials never reach the tenant. Each controller names a Secret in the tenant's namespace of this cluster (`proxmox.csi.credentialsSecretName`, `proxmox.ccm.credentialsSecretName`), an init container composes the config file from it into a memory-backed emptyDir at start-up, and the `kubernetes` release stores only the Secret's name. They are separate knobs from the capmox credentials, and from each other, so an operator can scope them: attaching disks is a different blast radius from creating VMs, and the CCM only reads inventory. `proxmox.insecure` defaults to `false`; a stand whose Proxmox serves a self-signed certificate sets it to `true`. `proxmox.csi.enabled: false` switches off the controller as well as the tenant release, and needs no CSI token. ### Where the hypervisor token lives, and why it decides the shape Both controllers run in the tenant's namespace of **this** cluster and drive the tenant over its admin kubeconfig. Only the CSI node plugin goes into the tenant, and it mounts no credentials. Installing them into the tenant would hand the token to the tenant. The resource definition lists the admin kubeconfig in `secrets.include`, so a tenant is cluster-admin of its own cluster, and the vendored chart writes the driver's `config.yaml` — token included — wherever it is installed. The privileges the driver documents are granted on `/`, so such a token reaches every VM and every volume on the Proxmox cluster. The KubeVirt path already has the shape that works, in `templates/csi/deploy.yaml`, and the upstream components support it: the CSI controller's `--kubeconfig` is documented for running out of cluster. Three consequences of the split are handled rather than left to be discovered: the vendored chart has no switch for its controller, so the tenant release sets `replicaCount: 0`; its Secret template is gated on a non-empty `config.clusters`, so an empty list keeps the credential out; and `CSIStorageCapacity` is published by the provisioner sidecar, which now owns those objects through a Pod that does not exist in the tenant, so `CSIDriver.storageCapacity` is patched to false by a kustomize postRenderer — the chart hardcodes it, and left true the scheduler refuses every Pod with "node(s) did not have enough free storage". Volumes are owned per cluster. The driver names them `vm-<controllerVmID>-pvc-…` and owns every volume as VMID 9999 unless `controllerVmID` is set, which leaves different clusters' volumes indistinguishable on shared storage. Each cluster sets its own, derived from its tenant namespace and release name, so two tenants' clusters with the same name still get different owners. **This does not make one tenant unable to reach another's volumes.** A tenant can still create a static PV naming a foreign `volumeHandle`, and the controller will attach it, detach it or delete it: the driver checks neither the VMID a node ID names nor the volume a handle names against the cluster it serves. Closing that needs a per-tenant Proxmox scope, and the charts can now produce one: `proxmox.pool` on the `kubernetes-nodes` chart puts every worker VM into a Proxmox resource pool as capmox clones it, replacements included, so one ACL on `/pool/<name>` follows every VM without being granted again. The README states the scope where an operator configuring the chart reads: a storage of the tenant's own (`Datastore.Allocate` on a storage reaches every volume on it), `VM.Audit`/`VM.Config.Disk` on that pool for the CSI controller, `VM.Audit` and `VM.GuestAgent.Audit` on it for the CCM — a NotReady Node whose VM the token cannot see is reported as gone and deleted — and what that scope still leaves open: the tenant's own disks, which a cluster-admin of the tenant could reach anyway. ### Deleting a cluster frees its disks The pre-delete hook deletes the CSI driver in Step 2, and a volume is freed only by the driver answering DeleteVolume, so a Step 1b runs first: it deletes the tenant's claims (`--wait=false`; a claim in use carries `kubernetes.io/pvc-protection`, so it clears once nothing mounts it), then the Pods holding each claim, then waits for the PVs rather than the PVCs. The Pods are found by listing every Pod with the claims it mounts and matching in the shell: a JSONPath filter on the claim name fails for a whole namespace as soon as one Pod there mounts two claims, and would find no Pod at all. The claims go first because a claim being deleted is one the scheduler places no new Pod on, so a Pod that a StatefulSet brings back cannot mount it again. Without the step the disks stayed on the hypervisor with the tenant's data in them and no PV object left to name their owner. A tenant apiserver that does not answer is told apart from a tenant with no claims: the first goes through the hook's backstop and shows in its summary, the second is the clean case. The probe is bounded with `timeout`, not `--request-timeout`, which the repo's hook check refuses because a non-zero value diverts an in-cluster kubectl call to localhost:8080. On the KubeVirt path two things change. The pre-delete hook's Step 5 checks that the DataVolume CRD exists before deleting DataVolumes, so a hook that runs where CDI is not installed no longer fails after every earlier step has run; the hook runs only at deletion. The worker pool's talos-reconcile Job changes at upgrade: its Role's TalosConfigTemplate rights are narrowed to the pool's own template and gain a named `delete`, and its script gains the replace step, which moves the Job's content-hash name. Every existing worker pool therefore gets a new reconcile Job when it upgrades. Where a pool's live TalosConfigTemplate still matches the render, that Job changes nothing; where it has drifted, the Job now deletes and recreates it instead of failing. Machines already running keep the bootstrap data they joined with; Machines created afterwards boot from the current template. ### Existing clusters: the TalosConfigTemplate CABPT will not let us patch CABPT's validating webhook rejects any change to `TalosConfigTemplate.spec` (`TalosConfigTemplate.Spec is immutable`). The kubelet flag this PR adds changes that spec, so on a cluster created before it the reconcile Job's `kubectl apply` fails with `is immutable` on every run, and a pool whose `ProxmoxMachineTemplate` also changed (say, `proxmox.pool` set) rolls its workers off the old template: they join without `--cloud-provider=external`, the CCM leaves them unmanaged, and the CSI node plugin exits on the missing zone label. The last commit makes the Job replace the object when apply reports the spec immutable: delete, apply again, log both. Existing Machines keep their bootstrap data; new ones are built from the replaced template. Pinned by `talos_tct_immutable_test.yaml`, and the RBAC the Job runs with covers exactly that delete (`resourceNames` of its own template). ### Evidence ``` $ KUBECONFIG=<tenant> kubectl get node -o custom-columns=… kubernetes-px3-md0-rp4s5-rgr48 prox-home prox-home proxmox://b903f905-7b4f-4048-b1b6-3e8f58530d8f $ kubectl -n tenant-proxmox3 get deploy kubernetes-px3-pcsi-controller 1/1 kubernetes-px3-pccm 1/1 $ KUBECONFIG=<tenant> kubectl get pods -n csi-proxmox csi-plugin-node 3/3 Running (the controller Deployment has 0 replicas) $ KUBECONFIG=<tenant> kubectl get secret -A | grep -c token_secret 0 $ KUBECONFIG=<tenant> kubectl get pvc csi-probe csi-probe Bound pvc-… 1Gi RWO proxmox ``` That the volume is real, not merely `Bound` in the API, and that it is this tenant's: ``` $ qm config <vmid> scsi1: main-pool:vm-798497-pvc-…,size=1G ``` Deleting the PVC frees the disk from the storage; the e2e probe checks that too. ### Known limitation The CCM logs every five minutes on PVE 9: ``` error get ha-groups 500 cannot index groups: ha groups have been migrated to rules ``` Proxmox 9 changed the HA-groups API. Node initialization is unaffected — labels and providerID are applied — but the CCM image v0.15.0's HA-groups lookup is not compatible with PVE 9. ### Testing `make unit-tests` — exit 0. `apps/kubernetes` 28 suites / 338 tests; `apps/kubernetes-nodes` 33 suites / 182 tests / 12 snapshots. Each of the eight commits passes both suites on its own. What the new asserts pin, each shown to go red on the mutation it exists for: the tenant release carries no credentials and no `valuesFrom`; the controllers run here with the Secret mounted and the tenant as their target; `csi.enabled: false` renders no CSI controller and needs no CSI token; the kubelet runs with `cloud-provider: external` on proxmox and without it on kubevirt; Step 1b and the cleanup Role's admin-kubeconfig entry render on proxmox and not on kubevirt, and Step 1b deletes the claims before the Pods; `proxmox.pool` reaches the `ProxmoxMachineTemplate` and an empty one renders no `pool`; each tenant gets its own volume owner id; the CCM runs in capmox mode; the CCM tolerates exactly two taints. `proxmox.ccm`, `proxmox.csi` and `proxmox.insecure` are optional in the schema — each has a default, and the render enforces what the substrate needs — so a `Kubernetes` object written against `main`'s `proxmox` block stays valid; the API review gate reports no sizeable change at any of the commits. The e2e suite ships `.disabled` and no CI lane runs it, so the substrate has no automated coverage until a runner with the `proxmox` label exists. What is in the tree is runnable: the fixture is rendered by `run-proxmox.sh` with explicit defaults (GNU `envsubst` does not expand `${VAR:-default}`, so the defaults live in the script and the render refuses a fixture with a variable left in it — pinned by `hack/proxmox-e2e-fixture_test.bats`), the runner reads the `.conf` kubeconfig a runner outside the management cluster can reach, the StorageClass and the PVC probe read the same storage variable, the probe checks the disk is gone after the claim is deleted, `keep_tenant` is honoured by the suite's own teardown, the workflow fails on an unset stand variable instead of falling back to a hardcoded address, and its schedule runs only where `vars.PROXMOX_NIGHTLY` is set, since the job needs a self-hosted runner with the `proxmox` label. The fixture takes the stand's resource pool through `COZY_PVE_POOL`. I have not filed speculative PRs or issues in those repositories for the same reason. If the direction is accepted, I open them; a human should decide which. **cozystack/terraform-provider-cozystack — matches, no follow-up yet.** - `packages/apps/kubernetes/values.schema.json` gains `proxmox.ccm.credentialsSecretName`, `proxmox.csi` (`enabled`, `credentialsSecretName`, `storageClasses[]`) and `proxmox.insecure`, with defaults in `values.yaml`. Same coupling as the substrate PR: hand-written schema, model and expand/flatten, and defaults the provider restates and sends itself. **cozystack/website — unclear, deliberately left unticked.** This PR adds one package under `packages/system/`, not under `packages/apps/` or `packages/extra/`, so the app-list trigger does not fire. Whether `proxmox-csi` counts as a "platform component" for `guides/platform-stack/_index.md` is a judgement about that page's scope: it is not part of the platform stack — it is an addon installed *into* a tenant cluster, like the KubeVirt CSI driver, which has no entry there either. I read that as no, but I am not confident enough to decide it for you, so the box stays empty. The README section on token privileges and per-tenant scope is the kind of text `operations/` pages carry; that follows the decision #3481 asks for. **Everything else: no match.** No app package added or renamed; no version enum, `kind`, `plural` or `release.prefix` change; `packages/core/platform/values.yaml` untouched; `packages/core/platform/sources/kubernetes-application.yaml` gains one component but is not a renamed `*-rd` file (ccp); `hack/` gains `e2e-chainsaw/_lib/run-proxmox.sh`, a suite directory shipped `.disabled`, and `proxmox-e2e-fixture_test.bats`, which runs with the other bats files; no `ApplicationDefinition` semantics or `release.chartRef.kind` enum change (external-apps-example); no node prerequisites; no telemetry metric; no commit-convention change. - [ ] No downstream repository is affected by this change - [ ] [cozystack/website](https://github.com/cozystack/website) - follow-up: - [ ] [cozystack/terraform-provider-cozystack](https://github.com/cozystack/terraform-provider-cozystack) - follow-up: - [ ] [cozystack/ansible-cozystack](https://github.com/cozystack/ansible-cozystack) - follow-up: - [ ] [cozystack/ccp](https://github.com/cozystack/ccp) - follow-up: - [ ] [cozystack/talm](https://github.com/cozystack/talm) - follow-up: - [ ] [cozystack/cozyhr](https://github.com/cozystack/cozyhr) - follow-up: - [ ] [cozystack/cozy-proxy](https://github.com/cozystack/cozy-proxy) - follow-up: - [ ] [cozystack/cozystack-telemetry-server](https://github.com/cozystack/cozystack-telemetry-server) - follow-up: - [ ] [cozystack/external-apps-example](https://github.com/cozystack/external-apps-example) - follow-up: - [ ] [cozystack/examples](https://github.com/cozystack/examples) - follow-up: - [ ] [cozystack/community](https://github.com/cozystack/community) - follow-up: ### Release note ```release-note feat(kubernetes): add the Proxmox CSI driver and cloud-controller-manager for tenant clusters on the `proxmox` substrate, giving them PersistentVolumes backed by Proxmox storage. What that run pinned: the CCM's capmox mode, capacity-aware scheduling off with `CSIDriver.storageCapacity` patched, and the teardown Role's admin-kubeconfig entry. A second run, on the head of this PR, used a pool per tenant and two privilege-separated tokens holding exactly the README's rows, on a throwaway tenant and then on the stand's long-lived cluster upgraded in place: - the worker VM lands in the pool as capmox clones it, and so does its replacement after the Machine is deleted — the CCM initialises the new node and the CSI attaches a disk to it with no ACL touched; - no `401` or `403` from the hypervisor in the CSI controller or the CCM over the whole run, once the roles were granted to the user as well as the token; - the PVC round-trip on both clusters, the disk gone from the storage after the claim; `helm uninstall` with a claim held by a running Pod deletes the claim before the Pod and waits for the volume to be released; - the in-place upgrade replaced the immutable template on the first apply conflict and the re-created worker came up with `--cloud-provider=external`.
