🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Assert the required volumeMounts and subPath values.
The OpenSearch operator v2.8.0 contract changes this fixture from one whole-Secret mount to three file mounts when http.generate is removed and http.caSecret is set. The six-minute assertion checks only the three Secret-backed volumes. It does not inspect spec.template.spec.containers[].volumeMounts, so missing or incorrect subPath values can pass. The later rollout assertion checks only replica and revision status. Assert the http-cert, http-key, and http-ca mounts with their required file subPath values.

NOT LGTM. The split works and I want it in, but the reasoning attached to it names the wrong mechanism, and this repo copies the PR body into the merge commit, so that reasoning lands in git log for good.
First the good part. On this PR's own run the opensearch suite failed at 989s with only status.(currentRevision == updateRevision) and status.updatedReplicas in the error list, and the failure diff carries nothing but status fields. The first assert passed, the second did not. That is exactly the discrimination the change is for, and the volume projections that misled the first reading are gone from the output.
That same run breaks the explanation the PR hangs on it. readyReplicas: 1 shows as an unchanged line in that diff and is absent from the error list, so it matched. The pod was Ready at the deadline. There is no replacement pod, and nothing had deleted the original one.
Blocker: the roll is not a Kubernetes rolling update
The PR body, the commit body and hack/e2e-chainsaw/opensearch/chainsaw-test.yaml:281 all read a failure of the second assert as "a replacement pod that will not start", resting on this:
a StatefulSet under the default
OrderedReadypolicy will not delete its sole pod to update it while that pod is not Ready
In opensearch-k8s-operator v2.8.0, pkg/builders/cluster.go:461-463 sets PodManagementPolicy: OrderedReady and UpdateStrategy.Type: OnDelete on every node-pool StatefulSet, and that is the only assignment to UpdateStrategy anywhere in the operator. Under OnDelete the StatefulSet controller does not delete a pod to apply a template change at all, Ready or not. podManagementPolicy orders creation and deletion while scaling, updateStrategy decides the update. The sentence reads the first field as if it were the second.
Two things follow, and both change what the new assert measures.
The roll is done by the operator's rolling-restart reconciler, which deletes the pod itself (pkg/reconcilers/rollingRestart.go). It needs status.Initialized, it needs ReadyReplicas == replicas (so a Ready pod is a precondition, the opposite of what the body says), then it opens a client to the OpenSearch API and asks CheckClusterStatusForRestart before deleting anything. Any of those can sit there indefinitely. In a suite whose whole subject is moving the HTTP listener onto a different CA, the operator losing its client to the cluster is not an exotic case.
And status.currentRevision never advances by itself under OnDelete. Kubernetes advances it only for RollingUpdate; this operator writes the field explicitly once updatedReplicas == replicas. So the second assert's own condition cannot go true unless that reconciler ran to the end.
Candidate (b) is therefore "the operator has not restarted the pod", with at least three ways to get there. Please reword the body paragraph, the commit body, and the comment at line 281 (line 37 carries the same phrase). The comment is the part that matters most: it is what the next person reads while debugging, and right now it points them at the pod.
Non-blocking
- "
reconcileNodeStatefulSetenforces the StatefulSet spec unconditionally" is not quite it. Three branches return before the final enforce: no node-pool config hash, theopensearch.roleselector recreate, and parallel recovery. The parallel-recovery gate isReadyReplicas < replicas-1, unreachable at one replica, so the conclusion holds. The word does not. - Ruling out an earlier reconciler by way of the security-config one covers one of the three that run ahead of the cluster reconciler. The TLS reconciler runs first and returns the admin-certificate path's result, which is the path this suite exercises. It returns an empty result in the ordinary case, so again the conclusion holds, but that is the one worth naming.
- Nothing ties the second assert's status to the rewritten template.
status.observedGenerationis not asserted, so a status left over from before the rewrite satisfies it. Small window, and it predates this PR, but the split is a natural moment to close it. - The suite catch carries no operator logs.
podLogsselectsopster.io/opensearch-cluster=opensearch-test, which is the cluster's own pods, and the reconciler that decides whether to restart logs elsewhere. The host snapshot has it, at the cost of unpacking an archive. A secondpodLogsscoped to the operator would put the decisive line straight into the job log. status.updatedReplicascarriesomitempty, so the YAML capture shows it by absence rather than as0. Still readable, and the other three fields are there verbatim.
Checked and correct as written
handleHttptakes thecaSecret+secretbranch and callsmount("http", "ca"|"key"|"cert", ...), which names the volumeshttp-ca,http-keyandhttp-cert, points them at the two secrets the step asserts, and carriesSubPathon each.- Startup and liveness are
TCPSocketongeneral.httpPort. Readiness is an exec ofcurl -k -u ... --silent --fail https://localhost:<port>. The logged plaintext request carries the load-balancer address in its Host header, so it is neither probe. The red herring call is right. docs/agents/e2e-testing.mddoes carry that bullet, and it says what the body says it says.packages/apps/opensearch/tests/tls_upgrade_test.yamlpinsgenerateabsent and both secret names, at the chart-render layer the body claims for it.- Budget: worst case for the step goes from 12m to 18m. No Chainsaw budget bounds a test below the job, the job is capped at 215 minutes, and the failing run above took 48 minutes end to end. It fits.
- Conventions: both waits are asserts, no new retry loop, no sleep, no trap. 6m sits inside the standard band and 12m is justified in place.
Source for all of that is the upstream v2.8.0 tarball this package's Dockerfile fetches, with the in-tree patch applied. The patch touches the gateway client and the bootstrap-pod block of the cluster reconciler, and leaves the builder, the TLS reconciler and the rolling-restart reconciler alone.

Under OnDelete the StatefulSet controller never deletes this pod, so a failure here does not mean a replacement pod that will not start. On the run for this PR readyReplicas: 1 matched while updatedReplicas was absent, so the original pod was still Ready and nothing had replaced it.
The roll here belongs to the operator's rolling-restart reconciler, gated on status.Initialized, on ReadyReplicas == replicas, and on CheckClusterStatusForRestart being able to reach the cluster. Line 37 carries the same phrase.

[MINOR] the second assert no longer pins the roll to the template the first one checked
One assert required the three volume projections and the converged status to hold in the same read of the object. Two asserts do not. The projections are satisfied at one moment and never looked at again, and the status half then accepts convergence onto whatever revision happens to be current when it polls.
The gap is not only the stale-status direction. It's also everything the operator writes afterwards. pkg/reconcilers/rollingRestart.go:81-90 in opensearch-k8s-operator v2.8.0 patches status.currentRevision = status.updateRevision as soon as updatedReplicas == replicas, for any template, so a rewrite landing after the first assert has passed satisfies the second one on its own once it rolls.
Latent rather than live in this suite: the mount plan follows the CR, which is Helm-owned and only moves once, at move-onto-cert-manager-issuer. The split is what removed the coupling, which is why it's worth closing now. Carrying the three volume projections into the second assert restores it and keeps the two timeouts separate, which is the point of the change.

Reworked at Blocker — wrong mechanism (Aleksei Sviridkin (@lexfrei), IvanHunters). You're both right: the nodePool StatefulSet is Blocker — the second assert didn't pin the roll to the template (IvanHunters MINOR, CodeRabbit (@coderabbitai) MAJOR). The split decoupled the volume projections from the status, so the status half could accept convergence onto whatever revision was current, and a rewrite landing after the first assert could satisfy the second on its own. The second assert now carries the same three volume projections as the first, so the roll is pinned to the template the first checked, and it also requires Non-blocking (Aleksei Sviridkin (@lexfrei)).

Verdict
LGTM with non-blocking notes
The split does what it claims, and the run on this head proves it rather than argues it: the first assert passed in 55ms at 22:21:42, the second failed on its own at 22:33:42, and the operator log this same change adds says why. The pinning gap I raised last round is closed. The volume projections and the status fields now have to hold in one read of the object.
Everything below is about the prose, not the mechanism. None of it blocks.
Findings
- [MINOR]
hack/e2e-chainsaw/opensearch/chainsaw-test.yaml:73, the operator collector reaches back a third of the window it explains - [MINOR]
hack/e2e-chainsaw/opensearch/chainsaw-test.yaml:68, only one of the three gates named here logs anything - [MINOR]
hack/e2e-chainsaw/opensearch/chainsaw-test.yaml:294, the attribution leaves out "restarted, but the replacement never came Ready"
[MINOR] the body carries no release-note block
.github/PULL_REQUEST_TEMPLATE.md:58 ships the fence and the body replaces the template wholesale.
One claim the run already settles
"the answer ... lives in the run's crust-gather snapshot, not in the tree", with two candidates named for it. The log on this head answers it directly:
"msg":"Couldn't proceed with rolling restart for Statefulset opensearch-test-nodes because waiting for health to be green","reconciler":"restart"
That string is os_data_service.go:180, reached only after GetHealth and GetFlatClusterSettings both return no error, and restartStatefulSetPod logs it only on err == nil (rollingRestart.go:177-183). The client reaches the cluster and the cluster answers. "The operator cannot reach the cluster" is out; what is open is why health is not green once the listener moves CA. Worth folding into the body, since the section still sends the next reader to an archive for it.
Caveats
- The red check is not this change.
Run E2E tests, job 104576486900: the suite has been on main since 19adffb, and #4259 records the same stall on main run 34891318171. - Checked rather than taken from the comments: OnDelete at
builders/cluster.go:462, theCurrentRevisionpatch atrollingRestart.go:81-90, the three gates at :94, :121 and :177. The newobservedGeneration == generationis non-vacuous under the pinned chainsaw v0.2.15 (mutating it to an unequal pair reddens the assert), so it dodges the numeric-comparison trape2e-testing.mdwarns about even though it is the suite's only field-to-field comparison. A catch op that errors does not abort the ones after it, so the addeddescribecannot cost you the Service dump. - No cluster here, so the first assert going red was exercised against a synthesised pre-move object, not a live operator that never rewrites. Worst case for the step goes 12m to 18m; the job ran 51m against a 215m cap.
Follow-up
- Both step-table rows print
verify-statefulset-rolled-onto-the-new-mount-plan. Two named steps would carry the half in the row itself, not only in the error list.

tail: 100 gave exactly 100 manager lines in run 35021437134, spanning 22:29:57.445Z to 22:34:09.041Z, so 4m12s. The assert it exists to explain ran 22:21:42 to 22:33:42, so the first 8m15s of that window is off the end of the buffer.
It worked here only because Couldn't proceed with rolling restart ... waiting for health to be green repeats every 10s. A one-shot cause at the moment the CR moved (a client error, a single refusal, the Initialized gate flipping) would not have survived to the collector. The cluster-pod collector above has the same shape, but it is not the one carrying the restart verdict. A larger tail on this one costs nothing on a test that has already failed.

There was a problem hiding this comment.
[MINOR] only one of the three gates named here logs anything
The comment sells this collector as carrying the restart verdict, and for CheckClusterStatusForRestart it does (rollingRestart.go:181). The other two named gates are silent:
rollingRestart.go:121:if !r.instance.Status.Initializedreturns a bareRequeue: true, RequeueAfter: 10s. No log, no event.rollingRestart.go:94:if sts.Status.ReadyReplicas != ptr.Deref(sts.Spec.Replicas, 1)does the same.
So in the case where the cluster never reaches Initialized, the 100 lines you collect contain nothing about the restart at all, and a reader who trusts this comment reads that silence as a rotated buffer rather than as the Initialized gate. The evidence for those two cases is in events: {} (the Starting rolling restart event that did not fire) and in the StatefulSet YAML, both of which the catch already carries.
One clause saying only the cluster-status gate logs and the other two requeue silently would keep the comment honest about what this collector can tell you.

[MINOR] the attribution leaves out "restarted, but the replacement never came Ready"
This half also requires readyReplicas: 1 (line 323). If the operator does delete the pod and the replacement crashloops, or sticks in ContainerCreating on the new subPath mounts, this assert times out with the first one green, and that is the startup candidate #4259 opened on, not "the operator not restarting the pod onto the new template".
Splitting the step separated the template rewrite from everything after it, which is the win and it holds. It did not separate the issue's two candidates from each other: telling them apart still means reading readyReplicas against updatedReplicas and the revisions in the captured YAML. Since precise attribution is this change's whole purpose, the comment should say the second half covers both "never deleted" and "deleted but never Ready".

The force-push at What is new is that the suite is green on this head, which it was not on the last one: Run 35198193128, job 105129929166. Both halves of the split reported on their own lines, and the timings are what the comments claim they are:
So the first half now discriminates in the passing direction too, not only in the failing one, and 12m on the second is roughly seven times the roll it has to cover. The same bytes failed on The four notes from my last round still stand, still non-blocking, and still on the same lines since the file did not move. NOT LGTM. The corrected mechanism is right. The third restart gate is described wrong, though: the text says the client reaching the cluster, the code gates on cluster health, and the operator log this PR adds already shows health holding the restart. One comment also cites a review.
Business context: the opensearch suite stalls waiting for the nodes StatefulSet to roll onto the new mount plan (#4259), and this change splits that wait so a timeout names the half that failed, and captures the operator log that says why.
currentRevision is advanced by the operator only. The e2e cluster runs Kubernetes v1.33.12 (hack/e2e-container-up.sh:119), and at that tag completeRollingUpdate touches currentRevision only under RollingUpdate (pkg/controller/statefulset/stateful_set_utils.go:642-650). Under OnDelete, updateStatefulSet returns before the update path (stateful_set_control.go:659-662) and getStatefulSetRevisions keeps the recorded revision (:261-272). In opensearch-k8s-operator v2.8.0 the only write of the field is pkg/reconcilers/rollingRestart.go:81-90, once updatedReplicas equals replicas. OnDelete itself is pkg/builders/cluster.go:462-463. The in-tree patch changes only the gateway client and the bootstrap-pod block, so this is the code that ships.
The split works. On 75f951b31, same file blob as this head, the first assert passed in 55ms and the second timed out with only status fields in the error list. On this head both passed, the second after 1m47s. The first assert is a subset of the second, so a split result can only mean the roll. The root-level generation key matched on that run (it is not in the error list, and the diff shows it as removed like any parenthesised key). I checked it can fail too: with chainsaw v0.2.15, a StatefulSet with generation: 3 and observedGeneration: 2 fails on exactly that key. Root is the right place for it. Inside status:, $.metadata.generation resolves against the status node and is empty.
Blocker: the third gate is health, not reachability
chainsaw-test.yaml:67 says the restart is gated on "CheckClusterStatusForRestart reaching the cluster". Line 296, the commit body and the PR body say "its client reaching the cluster". CheckClusterStatusForRestart (opensearch-gateway/services/os_data_service.go:156-189) says ready only for green health, or for yellow under a narrow exception (:269-284). A client that can't reach the cluster doesn't hold this gate. It gets an error, and rollingRestart.go:178-180 returns it as a reconcile error.
The catch from this PR already answered which one it was. On 75f951b31 (job 104576486900) the manager logged Starting rolling restart of the StatefulSet opensearch-test-nodes, which rollingRestart.go:155 prints only after the Initialized and ready-replica gates passed. Then every ten seconds until the deadline:
Couldn't proceed with rolling restart for Statefulset opensearch-test-nodes because waiting for health to be green
That is os_data_service.go:180, and the code gets there only after GetFlatClusterSettings returned a 2xx (os_client.go:224 makes anything else an error). So the client reached the cluster, the cluster answered, and health held the restart.
Same problem as last round, smaller. The comment is what the next person reads when the second half fails, and it sends them to check connectivity. The PR body becomes the merge commit, and "What this does not do" still gives two candidates: the pod never opening 9200, and the operator unable to reach the cluster. That run rules out both. The pod was Ready, and its readiness probe curls https://localhost:9200. The client got answers. The reachability idea is from my own wording last round, where it was only a possibility.
Please name the gate by what it checks (cluster health green, or the operator's yellow exception) in both comments, the commit body and the PR body. In "What this does not do", put what the log showed: the restart held on health, the open question is why health is not green after the move, and the same content passed on this head. The gate list is also incomplete (rollingRestart.go:62, :154 and :195 block the restart as well), so a pointer to the function is safer than a list. That goes with Ivan's note that only the health gate logs: if Starting rolling restart is missing, a silent gate held.
Blocker: a comment cites a review
chainsaw-test.yaml:303 ends a sentence with "(#4259 review)". A comment here has to make sense without the thread it came from (Review Blockers in docs/agents/contributing.md). It also points to the wrong place: #4259 is the issue, the review was on this PR. The sentence is complete without it.
Non-blocking:
- Lines 262-269 retell the incident ("cost the first run its diagnosis") nearly word for word from the commit body. The file needs only the rule: two asserts, so a timeout names its half. The diff is 46 comment lines out of 72, the file was about a quarter comments before.
- Ivan's three line notes still apply, and the body has no
release-noteblock.
Also checked: the namespace matches the operator's PackageSource and the control-plane: controller-manager label matches its Deployment, chainsaw v0.2.15 passes the explicit namespace through with --all-containers (pkg/engine/kubectl/logs.go:45-53), and the run above captured the manager container. Worst case for the step goes from 12m to 18m, and the three new catch ops are capped at 5m each by timeouts.exec but took under a second together on the failing run. Even at every cap, that 51-minute job would take 72 minutes of the 215 allowed.

NOT LGTM — the split is right and proven on this head (first assert done in 54 ms, second erred at the 12m deadline, and the red E2E here is the #4259 stall itself, fixed in #4317, not this diff), but two pieces of prose that land in git log are wrong, and the commits miss a trailer they need.
Blockers
B1: the podLogs comment still misplaces where an unreachable cluster fails
- File: hack/e2e-chainsaw/opensearch/chainsaw-test.yaml:72
- Issue: "A client that cannot reach the cluster errors out of that gate, it does not hold it. So a log missing "Starting rolling restart" means an earlier gate held silently." The client is built before that line, not at the gate.
- Evidence: at v2.8.0
rollingRestart.go:138callsutil.CreateClientForCluster;NewOsClusterClientFromConfig(os_client.go:104-112) pings the cluster and returns the error, and:139-141returns it from the reconcile.Starting rolling restartprints at:155. An unreachable cluster therefore never prints the line either, and loudly, as a reconcile error. - Fix: name both ways the line can be missing (an early gate at
:94,:123or:150-154holding silently, or the client ping at:138failing), or drop the "So ..." inference.
B2: the PR body ties the yellow health to the listener move, and the body becomes the merge commit
- File: PR body, "What this does not do"
- Issue: "health not going green in a suite whose subject is moving the HTTP listener onto a different CA is not exotic" and "It does not fix why health does not go green after the listener moves onto the new CA ... is the open question".
- Evidence: merge commits on
maincarry the PR body (5713b9774is one). The cause is on record in #4259 now: an index with an unassignable replica on a single data node, created when the bootstrap node leaves. The CA move plays no part, and #4317 fixes the gate. - Fix: replace that paragraph with a pointer to #4259 and drop the CA-move hint.
B3: no Assisted-by: LLM on either commit
- File: commits 04fb916, f994ba4
- Issue: contributing.md wants the trailer on an agent-assisted commit, and this change reads as one to me.
- Evidence: 56 of the 83 added lines are comments, against 114 of 420 in the file as it stands on main; the new comments carry ten em dashes in 56 lines and the "X, not Y" frame three times ("the operator not writing the volumes — not a pod that will not start", "the operator's rolling-restart reconciler's to drive — it deletes the pod itself — not the StatefulSet controller's", "in the operator, not the cluster pods above"). Both commits are signed off and clean otherwise.
- Fix: add the trailer if a model took part; it cannot be added once the merge commit lands. While rewriting the messages, fold

Non-blocking follow-ups
hack/e2e-chainsaw/opensearch/chainsaw-test.yaml:84: "at one health log per 10s over a 12m roll, 100 lines reach back only a third of it" does not follow from its own numbers; 100 lines at one per 10s is 16m. The measured third comes from the manager's total rate of four to five lines per requeue (Reconciling OpenSearchCluster,Generating certificates,Starting rolling restart,Couldn't proceed). State that rate or drop the derivation. On run 105251129282tail: 2000returned all 457 lines the container had logged since start, so 2000 is "everything" and not a window.- "the roll is the operator's rolling-restart reconciler's to drive" is explained in the catch StatefulSet block, the podLogs block and the second-assert block, and "Same 12m as the first boot, for the same reason" restates the step header two lines above it. One explanation, referenced from the others, is enough.

Non-blocking: 100 lines at one per 10s is 16m, so the "third" does not follow from these numbers. It is measured-correct because the manager logs four to five lines per requeue, not one.

NOT LGTM. One sentence left, and it is not the author's doing this time: #4317 landed on main between rounds and deleted the gate the comment describes.
The rest of last round is done. The client-ping path reads right, the review citation is gone, the two commits are folded into one with the trailer, and every line number in the new comment holds against v2.8.0: :94, :123, :138, :139-141, :150-154, :155, :177, :182, :195, and os_client.go:104-112. The patch's only hunk in rollingRestart.go is line-neutral, so they survive it.
Blocker: the gate condition is quoted from a build that no longer ships
hack/e2e-chainsaw/opensearch/chainsaw-test.yaml:78-79 says CheckClusterStatusForRestart "holds it until cluster health is green (or yellow under the .opensearch-observability exception)". That exception is not in the operator this suite runs against.
images/opensearch-operator/patches/restart-on-permanently-yellow.diff deletes continueRestartWithYellowHealth and rewrites the yellow branch: enable shard allocation, wait for every data node to join, wait for shard activity to settle, then proceed. Only red still reaches "waiting for health to be green". The Dockerfile applies everything in patches/ at build time, and values.yaml pins ghcr.io/cozystack/cozystack/opensearch-operator, so that build is what runs in the cluster. The patch sits in this PR's merge base, not ahead of it. Line 79 is the only mention of .opensearch-observability left in the tree; the other two hits are the patch removing it.
So the comment tells the next person that a yellow cluster holds the roll, while the step further down the same file that makes the cluster permanently yellow is there because it does not. The PR body repeats the same sentence in the present tense twice, in the candidate analysis and in "What this changes", and the body becomes the merge commit. "What this does not do" is already right, since it narrates the incident and names #4317 as the fix.
Worth saying, since it is round four: this is not the earlier claim in new words. The first three rounds moved the mechanism, from the StatefulSet controller to client reachability to health. This one is right on mechanism, on owner and on every line number. It reads false only because the gate it describes was replaced on main after the last round, and the rebase carried the sentence onto a tree where it no longer holds.
The red
E2E is failing, and not on the roll. The captured StatefulSet still has the pre-move http-cert volume on opensearch-test-http-cert, with no http-ca or http-key, while the CR already names both cert-manager Secrets and both Certificates are Ready. The operator's last write to the StatefulSet spec is 10:54:02 UTC, the CR moved at 10:56:38, and nothing rewrote the template in the eleven minutes to the end of the job. That is candidate (a), the half this split was added to name, so the 6m budget on the first assert is not what failed the run.

This is the only mention of .opensearch-observability left in the tree. images/opensearch-operator/patches/restart-on-permanently-yellow.diff deletes continueRestartWithYellowHealth and replaces the yellow branch with: enable shard allocation, wait for every data node to join, wait for shard activity to settle, then proceed. Only red reaches "waiting for health to be green" now. The patch is in this PR's merge base and the Dockerfile applies it, so the gate described here is not the gate that runs.
The verify-statefulset-rolled step folded two outcomes with two owners into one assert: that the operator rewrote the nodes template onto the subPath mount plan, and that the StatefulSet finished rolling onto it. When the roll stalled, the timeout could not say which half did not happen. The failure surfaced only as the status mismatch, while the volume projections in the diff read as absent even though they were present -- the projection trap e2e-testing.md documents, where the "actual" side of a Chainsaw diff is a projection and the real cause is the error line above it, not the diff. Split into two asserts so each candidate fails on its own line: the template rewrite on a reconcile-scale budget, the roll on the pod-lifetime one. The nodePool StatefulSet is OnDelete (opensearch-k8s-operator v2.8.0), so the roll is the operator's rolling-restart reconciler's to drive, not the StatefulSet controller's -- it deletes the pod itself, and currentRevision advances only once that reconciler patches it. A failure on the first assert is the operator not writing the volumes; a failure on the second with the first green is the roll not completing. The catch captures the StatefulSet as YAML and as a describe and the operator's own log, because updateRevision, currentRevision, generation and updatedReplicas are what separate the two halves -- describe omits them -- and the restart decision is logged in the operator, not in the cluster pods. The roll-gate comment ties each log signature to a v2.8.0 source line: the reconciler builds its OpenSearch client at rollingRestart.go:138, before it logs "Starting rolling restart" at :155, and that client pings the cluster, so the absence of the log line means an early gate held silently or the client ping failed loudly -- both, not just the first. The stall itself is fixed in #4317: a single-replica cluster is left permanently yellow by an index whose replica cannot be assigned. This change only makes the suite name which half of the roll a future failure stalled on. Refs #4259 Signed-off-by: Alexey Artamonov <[email protected]> Assisted-by: LLM

NOT LGTM. One clause in the body, and it is last round's clause, fixed in one of the two places it appears.
The suite comment matches the patch now, branch for branch, and .opensearch-observability is gone from the suite file. The inline findings from earlier rounds are closed: projections carried into the second assert, observedGeneration == generation present, tail at 2000, the log attribution naming both readings and the never-came-Ready case. Nothing to do there.
Blocker: the OnDelete bullet contradicts itself
Under "Which candidate", the bullet says the gate on yellow "now enables shard allocation, waits for every data node to join, waits for shard activity to settle, then proceeds". Two sentences later it says "on a single data node the health gate has an unrelated way to hold for good (#4259) ... the v2.8.0 gate opens only on green or on a yellow .opensearch-observability".
That path proceeds in this tree. opensearch.yaml:12 is replicas: 1, so the data-node wait is false; the first yellow visit sets allocation to all and the next one clears that check; an unassignable replica shows up in unassigned_shards, which hasShardActivity does not read. The gate opens on the second requeue. That is the whole reason make-the-cluster-permanently-yellow (line 198) can drive the roll through a yellow cluster at all.
This body becomes the merge commit verbatim (merge_commit_message is PR_BODY, squash and rebase both off), so it is not editable afterwards. The permanent record would say the state the suite deliberately creates is the state the gate never opens on, two sentences after saying the opposite. Dropping the clause is the whole fix, and a body edit does not re-run CI.
"What this does not do" is fine and I would leave it alone. It is pinned to a named run, it says "the v2.8.0 restart gate" rather than the gate in this tree, and #4317 follows in the next clause.
Not blocking
Both asserts can fail, and the split does what it says. The first one's expectation is the inverse of what verify-operator-managed-listener pinned two steps earlier, so it cannot pass for free; the second's is a superset of the first's, which is what makes "second red, first green" mean the roll. observedGeneration == generation earns its line: without it the status half could go green on an updateRevision computed before the template was rewritten.
Both required checks are green on 36bbc6244, first attempt, and the opensearch suite ran in that job rather than being skipped (359s, no failures). That says nothing broke. It does not say the split works, since the catch only runs on a failure.

Aleksei Sviridkin (@lexfrei) IvanHunters — ready for another look on Aleksei Sviridkin (@lexfrei) — your round-5 blocker (the "Which candidate" bullet contradicting itself: the patched yellow gate described as both proceeding and holding for good) is closed — the stale clause was dropped from the PR body, and "What this does not do" is left untouched as you asked. Everything else from earlier rounds (the log-order reading, the IvanHunters — all four of your non-blocking notes are addressed: the second assert now carries the three volume projections plus The remaining E2E non-determinism is #4332 (the admin-cert step stalling on a stopped operator reconcile loop), not this diff; #4259 was the mount-plan step and #4317 already fixed it. |

- The step's worst case goes from one 12m assert to 6m plus 12m, so a rewrite that lands somewhere between 6m and 12m now reds a run the single assert would have passed. Recommended follow-ups
- Nothing lints the Chainsaw suites.
chainsaw lint test -fappears in no workflow, nohack/script, noMakefileand not in.pre-commit-config.yaml, so a typo'd collector field is caught only by a selected E2E run. All 23 suites are lint-clean under v0.2.15 today, so such a gate would land green on the first try.

[MINOR] ?:? the closing clause of "What this does not do" reads false against the merge base
"this change touches only the step's comments and the operator-log tail, not the assertions" holds only relative to 49f3f059f, an earlier revision of this branch that no longer resolves after the rebase, so no reader can reconstruct the baseline it is measured against. Against the merge base it is not true:

[MINOR] the hold-reason guide names the red reason for a suite that pins the cluster yellow
The comment says yellow "enables shard allocation, waits for every data node to join, waits for shard activity to settle, then proceeds — so only red reaches the health hold", and that <reason> reads waiting for health to be green. That last part is true of the pre-#4317 incident only.
In the tree as built (v2.8.0 + patches/restart-on-permanently-yellow.diff, per packages/system/opensearch-operator/images/opensearch-operator/Dockerfile) yellow holds at three returns of its own, each printed through the same rollingRestart.go:182 line:
198: return false, "enabled shard allocation", nil
204: return false, "waiting for all data nodes to join the cluster", nil
211: return false, "waiting for shard recovery to finish", nil
226: return false, "waiting for health to be green", nil <- after the yellow block, so red only
make-the-cluster-permanently-yellow (:150) makes yellow the state this suite guarantees, and on the first pass the transient cluster.routing.allocation.enable is unset, so enabled shard allocation is the reason a future failure hits first — job 105251129282's captured operator log carries it. Reads better as: yellow holds too, and here are its reasons.
Nothing in the file ties that behaviour to the patch either: every version citation in the paragraph reads v2.8.0, and upstream v2.8.0 still gates yellow behind the .opensearch-observability carve-out, so a reader following the citation lands on a gate that contradicts the sentence. The suite never names the patch:
$ grep -n -i 'patch\|1569\|4317\|permanently-yellow\|observability' hack/e2e-chainsaw/opensearch/chainsaw-test.yaml

[MINOR] the operator-log collector has no census, so a drifted selector and a genuinely quiet operator look identical
harbor spells this out at its own hack/e2e-chainsaw/harbor/chainsaw-test.yaml:72-86 — "podLogs cannot report that it matched nothing, so an empty capture above and a selector that has gone stale look identical" — and pairs the collector with a label census.
control-plane=controller-manager matches today (packages/system/opensearch-operator/charts/opensearch-operator/templates/opensearch-operator-controller-manager-deployment.yaml:33, the pod template), but that label lives in a vendored chart the package's Makefile update: target re-pulls with helm pull. This collector is what the PR is for: if it ever stops matching, the next #4259 investigation gets an empty block and nothing says anything is missing. A one-line census in the same catch closes it.

LGTM. The stale clause is gone from the OnDelete bullet, and that was the last thing. Code is unchanged since the previous round and both required checks are green on this head.
… repeat The patch comment, the Dockerfile and the PR body all said the TLS reconciler logs when it is entered. It does not: its one line above the work sits on the no-security early return, which the chart in this repository never renders, and the rolling restart line is V(1), off at the shipped verbosity. Nothing logs unconditionally on entry, which is the reason the watchdog exists rather than an exception to it. The repeat was held by nothing: replacing the ticker loop with a single report kept every spec green, and a single line is what a tailing collector cuts. It has a spec now, and so does the elapsed the report carries. The threshold spec had the same hole in another form, passing whenever the goroutine lost its race to the return, so the call it wraps now runs long enough to catch a watchdog that ignores the threshold. Two behaviours changed with them: elapsed is measured from the call rather than from whenever the goroutine got scheduled, and a call that has already returned is never reported as stuck, which a tick landing on the return could previously still do. The e2e catch leg for the operator's own namespace, which an earlier revision of this commit added, is no longer here: #4279 landed the same leg on main with a larger tail, so the suite already collects the operator's log. The finalizer path is left alone: every DeleteResources at this version returns immediately, so a watchdog there could only spawn goroutines for calls that cannot block. Assisted-by: LLM Signed-off-by: IvanHunters <[email protected]>
…in (#4333) ## What this PR does The cluster controller runs nine component reconcilers in sequence, and none of them logs unconditionally when it is entered. The TLS one has a line above its work, but it sits on the early return for a cluster with no security section, which `packages/apps/opensearch/templates/opensearch.yaml` never renders, and the rolling restart one opens at `V(1)`, off at the verbosity the operator ships with. So a call that stops returning leaves nothing behind at all: the operator log ends on whatever ran before it, the object stops being reconciled, and from the outside that is indistinguishable from an operator with nothing to do. That is not hypothetical. Two e2e runs on 2026-09-18 ended that way, and the evidence is the operator's own log, read out of the crust-gather host snapshot each failed run uploads, at `snapshots/opensearch/host/namespaces/cozy-opensearch-operator/v1/pod/opensearch-operator-controller-manager-*/operator-controller-manager/current.log`. In run 35343282947 the operator reconciled `OpenSearchCluster` 27 times on a steady cadence, gaps of 10.2s for almost all of them and 26.5s at the widest. Its last line is at 13:51:33.225Z. helm-controller applied the CR revision that moves the cluster onto the chart CA at 13:51:35Z. Nothing was written for the remaining four minutes, the pod stayed Running and Ready with 0 restarts, and the admin certificate the step was waiting on was never re-minted. Run 35333289958, a different branch and a different operator pod, has the same shape: last line 10:56:35.706Z, Apply at 10:56:38Z, widest gap before that 24.2s, then silence. The securityconfig Job had completed successfully in both, and the cluster itself was quiet. #4332 tracks it. A patch on the image now wraps each component so a call still in flight after a minute reports the component's own name and how long it has been running, and keeps reporting on the same interval while it is stuck. A pass through the components takes seconds on a healthy cluster and the controller requeues itself every 30s, so a minute is well past anything normal. Nothing at all is written while a component behaves, which is why this is a watchdog rather than an entry log: logging every entry would put nine lines per cluster into the log on every reconcile. The finalizer path is deliberately left alone, because every `DeleteResources` at this version returns immediately and a watchdog there could only spawn goroutines for calls that cannot block. The e2e lane already collects that log and nothing in it changes here. #4279 put a `podLogs` leg on the operator's own namespace into the opensearch catch, `namespace: cozy-opensearch-operator`, `selector: control-plane=controller-manager`, `tail: 2000`, and this branch sits on top of it. The other `podLogs` leg takes the cluster's own pods in the test namespace, and cozyreport's per-pod walk keeps only pods that are not Running or not Ready, which a stalled operator is neither, so before #4279 these lines reached the job log only through the crust-gather snapshot. This is a diagnostic, not the fix. Where the reconcile stops is still unknown, and the next occurrence should name it. The Dockerfile comment says to drop the patch once the stall itself is understood and fixed. The new code lives in `pkg/reconcilers`, already covered by the image's `go test` step. Five specs hold it: the wrapped result and error pass through untouched, a call that returns before the threshold is never reported, a call that returns before the threshold also takes the watchdog with it, the report names the component and a moving elapsed while the call is in flight, and the report repeats rather than firing once. Six mutations each fail the spec that owns them: dropping `close(done)`, `time.NewTimer(0)`, an empty component name, a frozen elapsed, a fire-once ticker, and a swallowed result. The full four-patch sequence applies to a fresh v2.8.0 tree in the alphabetical order the build relies on, and builds, vets and tests clean there, with five `-race` runs of the new specs. ### Screenshots Not a UI change. ### Downstream repositories Walked the trigger map against the diff: one Dockerfile comment block and one new patch file under `packages/system/opensearch-operator/images/`. When reconciliation remains in progress beyond the configured threshold, the operator logs the component name and elapsed time at regular intervals. - Monitoring remains silent for promptly completed operations and preserves existing results and errors. - **Documentation** - Clarified reconciliation watchdog behavior and documented why certain resource deletion operations are not monitored. <!-- end of auto-generated comment: release notes by coderabbit.ai -->
What this is
Refs #4259. A diagnosis of the opensearch suite timeout plus the one in-repo change it warrants: making the failing step say which of its two candidates actually happened. It does not claim to fix the root cause — see "What this does not do".What the run actually showed
The
verify-statefulset-rolled-onto-the-new-mount-planassert erred with exactly two field failures, both understatus:(currentRevision == updateRevision): falseandupdatedReplicas: field not found. No volume field appears in the error list, andreadyReplicas: 1shows as an unchanged line, so the pod was Ready at the deadline and nothing had replaced it. Per e2e-testing.md ("Reading a failure diff: the actual side is a projection"), the real cause is the error line, not the diff — and a Chainsaw diff projects the live object onto the expected fields, so the threehttp-ca/http-cert/http-keylines showing in the diff are the expected tree, not proof the volumes are absent. Read that way, the volume assertions matched: the three volumes were present on the live template. The "volumes missing" reading is the projection trap the doc warns against.Which candidate
Candidate (b): the template was rewritten onto the subPath mount plan, and the operator has not restarted the pod onto it. This is consistent with the source, traced against opensearch-k8s-operator v2.8.0 as vendored:
generatedropped, secretandcaSecretnamed — proven bypackages/apps/opensearch/tests/tls_upgrade_test.yaml.pkg/reconcilers/tls.gohandleHttpappends exactly the three volumes the step asserts (http-cafromopensearch-test.http-ca,http-keyandhttp-certfromopensearch-test-http-server), andpkg/reconcilers/cluster.goreconcileNodeStatefulSetwrites that template onto the StatefulSet. Three branches return ahead of that write — no node-pool config hash, theopensearch.rolerecreate, and parallel recovery — but the parallel-recovery gate isReadyReplicas < replicas-1, unreachable at one replica, so the write happens. The reconcilers that run ahead of the cluster reconciler do not stop it either: the TLS reconciler runs first and returns the admin-certificate path's result, empty in the ordinary case, andsecurityconfig.Reconcileshort-circuits to nil when the security-config checksum is unchanged, which the move does not change. So the operator does write the volumes.OnDelete(pkg/builders/cluster.gosetsUpdateStrategy.Type: OnDeletealongsidePodManagementPolicy: OrderedReady), so the StatefulSet controller never deletes the pod to apply a template change:podManagementPolicyorders creation and deletion during scaling, updateStrategydecides the update. The roll is the operator's rolling-restart reconciler's to drive (pkg/reconcilers/rollingRestart.go) — it deletes the pod itself. It needsstatus.Initialized, it needsReadyReplicas == replicas(a Ready pod is a precondition, not the blocker), then it opens a client to the OpenSearch API and callsCheckClusterStatusForRestart, which holds the restart while the cluster is red; on yellow the gate now enables shard allocation, waits for every data node to join, waits for shard activity to settle, then proceeds (fix(opensearch-operator): let a permanently yellow cluster restart #4317 deleted the old.opensearch-observabilitycarve-out, and this suite builds the operator with that patch). Any of those gates can sit indefinitely.status.currentRevisionnever advances by itself underOnDelete; the operator patches it onceupdatedReplicas == replicas, so the second assert's own condition cannot go true unless that reconciler ran to the end.builders/cluster.go), so "connection refused" is OpenSearch not listening, not a probe-scheme mismatch. The plaintextGET / HTTP/1.1fromcurl/8.5.0on the TLS listener is neither the startup/liveness probe (TCP) nor the readiness probe (curl -k https://localhost:9200, localhost, HTTPS) — it is external traffic to the LoadBalancer address, a red herring for the stall. What this changes
The step now runs two asserts instead of one. The first waits for the operator to rewrite the template onto the three volumes, on a reconcile-scale budget (6m) — a failure here is the operator not writing them (candidate a). The second waits for the roll to complete onto that template, on the pod-lifetime budget (12m) — a failure here with the first green is the roll not completing (candidate b): the operator never restarting the pod, which the rolling-restart reconciler holds while
CheckClusterStatusForRestartreports the cluster red — on yellow the gate enables shard allocation, waits for every data node to join, waits for shard activity to settle, then proceeds — or a replacement that was deleted but never came Ready. The second assert carries the three volume projections andobservedGeneration == metadata.generationas well, so the roll is pinned to the template the first assert checked rather than to whatever revision is current when the status converges. The suitecatchalso captures the StatefulSet as YAML and as a describe, and the operator's own log, becauseupdateRevision, currentRevision, generationandupdatedReplicasare what separate the two halves — describe alone omits them — and the restart decision is logged in the operator, not in the cluster pods. The reconciler logsStarting rolling restart of the StatefulSet(rollingRestart.go:155) once its early gates (Initialized, ready-replica, update-pending) pass; it builds its OpenSearch client just before, at:138, and that client pings the cluster — so a run whose log lacksStarting rolling restarteither had an earlier gate hold it silently or had the client ping fail loudly, not only the former, while that line present followed by aCouldn't proceed with rolling restart ... because <reason>line names a health-stage hold (the health gate isCheckClusterStatusForRestart, and it is not the last:PreparePodForDeletefollows it). The operator-logtailwas raised so it spans the whole assert window rather than a third of it.What this does not do
It does not fix the stall; #4317 does, and is already merged. The run that captured this (
Run E2E tests, job 104576486900) shows the rolling-restart reconciler holding on health: the manager loggedStarting rolling restart of the StatefulSet opensearch-test-nodes(rollingRestart.go:155, printed only after theInitializedand ready-replica gates passed) and then, every ten seconds to the deadline,Couldn't proceed with rolling restart ... waiting for health to be green(os_data_service.go:180), which is reached only afterGetFlatClusterSettingsreturned 2xx (os_client.go:224makes anything else an error). So the operator reached the cluster and the cluster answered; health held the restart. #4259 established why, and the CA move plays no part: on a single data node the bootstrap node leaving is audited into a freshsecurity-auditlog-*index with one replica, that replica has nowhere to go, the cluster stays yellow for good, and the v2.8.0 restart gate opens only on green (or on a yellow.opensearch-observability) so it never opens. #4317 backports opensearch-project/opensearch-k8s-operator#1569 to fix that gate; this PR is only the diagnostic split that names which half of the roll a failure is. The split content itself is not the failure: on49f3f059fboth asserts passed, the second after 1m47s, and this change touches only the step's comments and the operator-log tail, not the assertions. With this change in place, a future occurrence names the half, and the catch carries the roll's own fields and the operator log, so the crust-gather can be read against a specific claim rather than an ambiguous one.Release note
