NOT LGTM. The patch applies and builds clean and the three specs each catch their own mutation. Two things block it: the sentence the whole design rests on is wrong about the one component #4332 points at, and nothing in the e2e lane collects the log these lines go into.
IvanHunters, first review on this one, so I reproduced instead of reading the diff.
What I ran: all four patches into a fresh v2.8.0 checkout in one git apply, in the order the glob expands. Every hunk landed exactly, no offsets and no fuzz, and the new one is last alphabetically like the Dockerfile says. go build ./..., go vet, gofmt -l and go test ./opensearch-gateway/... ./pkg/reconcilers/... all clean on Go 1.27.1 against the builder's 1.26 pin, and nothing here is version sensitive. Five runs of the new specs under -race, clean. The mutations hold up: swallowing the error fails the first spec, logging before warnAfter elapses fails the second, dropping done from the inner select fails the third. Cost I measured rather than assumed, and it is fine: nothing at all on a healthy cluster, one line a minute per stuck component while it is stuck, nine short-lived goroutines per pass.
Blocker 1, the TLS claim
trace-stalled-component-reconcilers.diff:68, the same sentence at Dockerfile:30, in the commit body and in the PR body.
At v2.8.0 TLSReconciler.Reconcile has one log statement before it starts work, No security specified. Not doing anything, and it sits on the Spec.Security == nil || Spec.Security.Tls == nil early return (tls.go:58-62). packages/apps/opensearch/templates/opensearch.yaml:49 sets security.tls unconditionally, so that branch never runs and the TLS reconciler is as quiet on entry as the other eight. Nothing logs unconditionally on entry at all. RollingRestartReconciler.Reconcile takes a logger at rollingRestart.go:57, but its first write is lg.V(1), off at the shipped verbosity.
The design survives without that sentence. The sentence itself reads as "a stall in TLS would leave a line behind, the rest would not", and TLS is exactly the reconciler #4332 suspects. Four copies, and one of them becomes the merge commit message.
Blocker 2, nothing collects that log
The operator runs in cozy-opensearch-operator. The suite's catch has one podLogs leg, selector: opster.io/opensearch-cluster=opensearch-test with no namespace: (hack/e2e-chainsaw/opensearch/chainsaw-test.yaml:46), so it takes the cluster's own pods in the test namespace. cozyreport's per-pod walk goes through cozyreport_pods_not_ready (hack/cozyreport.sh:468), which keeps a pod only when it is not Running, or Running with an unready container. Your own body says this operator pod stayed Running and Ready with 0 restarts. cozyreport does carry unconditional deployment probes, for cozystack-operator, the flux controllers and cert-manager, and none for this one.
Replay the change over the three runs listed in #4332 and it writes component reconciler has not returned into a stream that no artifact holds. On a live cluster you can still read it by hand, which is not the case this is written for. The cert-manager probe in cozyreport is four lines. I would add the operator to one of the two collectors in this PR, otherwise the patch gets carried forever and the next occurrence looks the same as the last three.
Smaller things
The repeat is the one property that makes this different from a one-shot report, and no spec pins it. Swap the ticker loop for a single logger.Info and a return and all three specs still pass. Both collectors tail, 100 lines in the suite and 2000 in cozyreport, so fire-once is exactly the shape that loses the line.
deleteExternalResources (opensearchController.go:204) runs five component reconcilers unwrapped, so the finalizer path keeps the silence the running path just lost.
On the fix rather than the report: every gateway call goes out on context.Background() through an http.Transport with no timeouts set (os_client.go:72-86), so a request that never gets an answer blocks the single reconcile worker for good. ClusterHealthRequest.Timeout: 10 * time.Second at os_client.go:281 is not a counterexample, opensearch-go v1.1.0 renders it into params["timeout"], which bounds what the server waits for and not what the operator waits for. CheckClusterStatusForRestart at rollingRestart.go:177 is one of those calls, inside restart.Reconcile, and a block there stops the worker before tls.Reconcile gets another pass. That is the shape #4332 describes.
The body sends a reader to #4332 for "details and run IDs". The run IDs are there. The cadence, the 26.5s gap, the last line one to three seconds ahead of the CR rewrite and the four Running-and-Ready minutes are not, and #4332 says the operator log for those runs was not collected. The body becomes the merge commit message, so either the evidence goes into it or the pointer comes out.
componentStallWarnAfter and componentStallRepeatEvery are two names for the same minute.

At v2.8.0 the TLS reconciler does not log on entry either. The only log statement above its work is No security specified. Not doing anything (tls.go:58-62), on the Spec.Security == nil || Spec.Security.Tls == nil early return, and packages/apps/opensearch/templates/opensearch.yaml:49 sets security.tls unconditionally, so that branch never runs here. No component logs unconditionally on entry: RollingRestartReconciler.Reconcile takes a logger at rollingRestart.go:57 and its first write is lg.V(1), off at the shipped verbosity.
The carve-out lands on the one reconciler #4332 points at, so it is worth getting right in all four places it appears.

Nothing pins the repeat. Replace this loop with a single logger.Info and a return and all three specs still pass, so a fire-once implementation would ship green. That matters because both log collectors tail, 100 lines in the chainsaw suite and 2000 in the report, and a single early line is what gets cut. A fourth spec waiting for a second report while the call is still blocked is a few lines.

Same claim as in the patch comment, and it is wrong for the configuration this repo ships: the TLS reconciler's only entry log sits on the no-security early return that packages/apps/opensearch/templates/opensearch.yaml:49 never triggers.

Use one snapshot for the elapsed assertions.
WithStallWatchdog writes reports from a ticker while the call remains blocked. Because elapsed() and len(sink.snapshot()) take separate snapshots, a report can be appended between them. The assertion can then fail even when every report has an elapsed field. Capture lines := sink.snapshot() once and derive both the elapsed values and expected length from lines.

Synchronize watchdog shutdown before taking the baseline count.
time.Sleep(50 * time.Millisecond) does not prove that a report already inside logger.Info and recordingSink.write has completed. That report can append after settled is captured, causing the Consistently assertion to fail intermittently. Wait for an explicit watchdog completion signal before taking the baseline count.

NOT LGTM. The watchdog line is collected now and the TLS claim is right in all four places. What blocks is the sentence that replaced it, which names the wrong collector, and the PR body, which still describes a change that is not in the diff.
IvanHunters, the collection question is settled, so this round is about text that will outlive it. #4279 put a podLogs leg on the operator's own namespace into the suite's catch, selecting control-plane=controller-manager at tail: 2000, the operator Deployment's pod template carries that label, and this branch sits on top of it. Dropping your own leg in favour of it was the right call.
The rest of the patch holds up. All four patches went into a fresh v2.8.0 tree in one git apply in glob order, every hunk clean, no offsets and no fuzz. go build ./..., go vet, gofmt -l and go test ./opensearch-gateway/... ./pkg/reconcilers/... are clean, and clean again under -race, five watchdog specs out of 177. Each of the six mutations your body claims does fail a spec: fire-once, a zero elapsed, a frozen non-zero elapsed, time.NewTimer(0) and a swallowed result take one spec each, and dropping close(done) takes two.
Blocker 1, the tail number
The line at trace-stalled-component-reconcilers.diff:92 names a collector that does not read this log. It says the collector tails it at 100 lines, so a single report written when the stall began is what gets cut.
The leg that reads the operator's log tails it at 2000 (hack/e2e-chainsaw/opensearch/chainsaw-test.yaml:88-96). The 100-line leg thirty lines above it selects opster.io/opensearch-cluster=opensearch-test, which is the cluster's own pods. The sentence was true of the leg your previous revision added, which carried tail: 100; it stopped being true when that leg gave way to the one already on main, and the comment stayed behind. The repeat does not need it either way, the first half of that paragraph carries the argument on its own.
Blocker 2, the body describes a file the diff does not touch
This repository merges with a merge commit and merge_commit_message is PR_BODY, so the body is the message that lands on main.
It still says the suite's catch gains a leg for the operator's own namespace, and the downstream walk counts that leg as one of three changes. The diff is two files. Your commit body already has the accurate version of this.
Blocker 3, the second commit's body
The repository's own contributing guide makes review-iteration vocabulary in a commit body NOT LGTM on the text alone (docs/agents/contributing.md). a5c759d carries "which an earlier revision of this commit added", and its first two paragraphs describe what a previous revision said and which specs were green rather than the change at rest. 86c7f96 still asserts that only the TLS reconciler logs when it is entered, and a merge commit keeps both messages, so git log on main would get the wrong claim followed by a correction of a revision nobody can open. One commit with one body, written as if it had been right the first time, removes all three problems.
Smaller things
The guard added at :116 is neither pinned nor absolute. Delete the whole select and all five specs still pass. And between the default: arm and logger.Info the goroutine can be preempted, rec() can return, close(done) can run, and the line lands anyway. The window narrows from a tick coincidence to a preemption, it does not close, and the comment states it as something that cannot happen.
The elapsed assertion at :264 reads the sink twice. elapsed() takes one snapshot, len(sink.snapshot()) takes another, and the ticker can append between them. Widening that gap to one tick interval fails it every time, 3 against 4. As written the window is sub-microsecond, so it is a rare flake rather than a broken test, but it runs inside RUN go test in the image build. One lines := sink.snapshot() closes it.
One line number in the new comment at :10 points at the wrong tree. cluster.go:272 is the pristine upstream position; with the patches applied in glob order ClusterReconciler.DeleteResources sits at cluster.go:384, and 272 lands inside the statefulset reconcile. The other four are right in both trees, and the claim itself holds, all five return immediately.

This names a collector that does not read this log. The operator's log is taken by the leg at hack/e2e-chainsaw/opensearch/chainsaw-test.yaml:88-96, namespace: cozy-opensearch-operator with tail: 2000. The tail: 100 leg above it selects opster.io/opensearch-cluster=opensearch-test, the cluster's own pods, and never opens the operator's log.
It was true of the leg your previous revision added, which carried tail: 100. That leg gave way to the one already on main and the sentence stayed. The repeat stands on the first half of the paragraph without it.

The window also stays open: between the default: arm and logger.Info the goroutine can be preempted, rec() can return and close(done) can run, and the report lands on a call that already came back. Two snapshots where one is meant. elapsed() reads the sink, then len(sink.snapshot()) reads it again, and the ticker can append in between.
I widened that gap to one tick interval and it fails every time, 3 against 4. As written the window is sub-microsecond, so it is a rare flake rather than a broken test, but this runs inside RUN go test in the image build. Capturing lines := sink.snapshot() once and deriving both from it closes it.

cluster.go:272 is the pristine upstream position. With the patches applied in glob order ClusterReconciler.DeleteResources sits at cluster.go:384, and 272 lands inside the statefulset reconcile, so a reader following it in the built image's sources ends up somewhere unrelated.
The other four are right in both trees and the claim itself holds: all five return immediately.
The cluster controller runs nine component reconcilers in sequence and none of them logs unconditionally when it is entered: the TLS one's only line above its work sits on the no-security early return, which the chart in this repository never renders, and the rolling restart one opens at V(1), off at the verbosity the operator ships with. So a call that stops returning leaves nothing behind at all. The operator log ends on whatever ran before it, the object is silently no longer reconciled, and from the outside that is indistinguishable from an operator with nothing to do. Two e2e runs ended exactly that way, the operator going quiet at the moment the chart rewrote the CR and never coming back: #4332. Each component is now wrapped so a call still in flight after a minute reports its own name and how long it has been running, and keeps reporting on that interval while it is stuck. A single line dated at the start of a stall does not answer the question a reader has five minutes in, which is whether the call is still there. Nothing is written while a component behaves, so a healthy cluster costs no extra lines. The finalizer path is left alone: every DeleteResources at this version returns immediately, so a watchdog there could only spawn goroutines for calls that cannot block. A diagnostic rather than a fix: drop it once the stall itself is understood. Assisted-by: LLM Signed-off-by: IvanHunters <[email protected]>

Three blockers fixed and the two smaller ones, with one left in place on purpose and its comment corrected instead. Blocker 1, the tail number. Right, and the sentence is gone rather than renumbered. IvanHunters, LGTM. The three text blockers from my last review are closed, and I found nothing new that blocks.
The base did not move, so everything between the two heads is rework: the comment rewrites, cluster.go:384, the single snapshot in the elapsed assertion, and the new Eventually in the shutdown spec.
- The tail sentence is gone. Neither the patch nor the Dockerfile names a collector any more, and the argument that replaced it works without one.
- The body matches the diff now. The leg it credits to #4279 is the one at
hack/e2e-chainsaw/opensearch/chainsaw-test.yaml:88-96on main, with the namespace, selector andtail: 2000it quotes. - The branch is one commit with no review-round vocabulary. Its TLS sentence agrees with
tls.go:58-62at v2.8.0, since the chart renderssecurity.tlsunconditionally.
The patched tree builds and tests clean for me. All four patches apply to a fresh v2.8.0 tree in glob order with no offsets, go build, go vet, gofmt -l and the image's go test line pass, and five -race runs of the watchdog specs pass. Dropping close(done) fails the shutdown spec and the threshold spec. A fire-once ticker fails the repeat spec, 1 line against the 3 it waits for.
One thing in your comment is off: the shutdown spec does not catch a fire-once ticker. The count stops at one line and settles, so that Eventually passes. The body only says each mutation fails the spec that owns it, which is true, so nothing to change.
Keeping the guard with the corrected comment is fine with me.

…econciler a stall sits in (#4377) # Description Backport of #4333 to `release-1.6`, together with #4231 which it depends on. 1.6 has no in-tree opensearch-operator build, so bot draft added only the Dockerfile and patch from #4333 would never reach an image. #4231 brings the build (`image` target, values wiring, root `Makefile` entry) plus its own single-replica fix. In root `Makefile` I kept only opensearch-operator line, redis-operator is not built in-tree on 1.6. I built image locally, both patches apply to operator v2.8.0 and stall watchdog specs from #4333 pass.
What this PR does
The cluster controller runs nine component reconcilers in sequence, and none of them logs unconditionally when it is entered. The TLS one has a line above its work, but it sits on the early return for a cluster with no security section, which
packages/apps/opensearch/templates/opensearch.yamlnever renders, and the rolling restart one opens atV(1), off at the verbosity the operator ships with. So a call that stops returning leaves nothing behind at all: the operator log ends on whatever ran before it, the object stops being reconciled, and from the outside that is indistinguishable from an operator with nothing to do.That is not hypothetical. Run 35333289958, a different branch and a different operator pod, has the same shape: last line 10:56:35.706Z, Apply at 10:56:38Z, widest gap before that 24.2s, then silence. The securityconfig Job had completed successfully in both, and the cluster itself was quiet. #4332 tracks it.A patch on the image now wraps each component so a call still in flight after a minute reports the component's own name and how long it has been running, and keeps reporting on the same interval while it is stuck. A pass through the components takes seconds on a healthy cluster and the controller requeues itself every 30s, so a minute is well past anything normal. Nothing at all is written while a component behaves, which is why this is a watchdog rather than an entry log: logging every entry would put nine lines per cluster into the log on every reconcile. The finalizer path is deliberately left alone, because every
DeleteResourcesat this version returns immediately and a watchdog there could only spawn goroutines for calls that cannot block. The e2e lane already collects that log and nothing in it changes here. #4279 put a
podLogsleg on the operator's own namespace into the opensearch catch, namespace: cozy-opensearch-operator,selector: control-plane=controller-manager,tail: 2000, and this branch sits on top of it. The otherpodLogsleg takes the cluster's own pods in the test namespace, and cozyreport's per-pod walk keeps only pods that are not Running or not Ready, which a stalled operator is neither, so before #4279 these lines reached the job log only through the crust-gather snapshot. This is a diagnostic, not the fix. Where the reconcile stops is still unknown, and the next occurrence should name it. The Dockerfile comment says to drop the patch once the stall itself is understood and fixed.
The new code lives in
pkg/reconcilers, already covered by the image'sgo teststep. Five specs hold it: the wrapped result and error pass through untouched, a call that returns before the threshold is never reported, a call that returns before the threshold also takes the watchdog with it, the report names the component and a moving elapsed while the call is in flight, and the report repeats rather than firing once. Six mutations each fail the spec that owns them: droppingclose(done),time.NewTimer(0), an empty component name, a frozen elapsed, a fire-once ticker, and a swallowed result. The full four-patch sequence applies to a fresh v2.8.0 tree in the alphabetical order the build relies on, and builds, vets and tests clean there, with five-raceruns of the new specs.Screenshots
