[-]Feature Gap Analysis Collectives[/-][+]Collectives market analysis[/+]on Jan 9, 2023 What I like a lot with notion.so is: (and I don't found it in the list above)
- create pretty easy a nice looking public website
- embed content: Similar to Ability to use # character to help reference any linkable object on the Nextcloud instance server#31667 but in notion the user can show not only a calendar entry but a whole calendar, not only a deck card but a deck board, ...

(Upfront apologies if this is not the place for this discussion, I wasn't sure where else it would fit)
Is Collectives committed to a Markdown solution for data and content storage? I notice several items that are marked as either Not Supported by Markdown or listed under the "Potential hard ones (due to markdown)" section. The only way to solve some of those will be to move away from text-based Markdown.
Does Collectives aim to move in that direction to directly compete with Notion et al, or to stick with the portability and simplicity of Markdown and aim to be a better app than NC Notes? Both options have value :)
Reacted by Marco@philiprenich I think we should "grow out" of the markdown constraints at this point, but this is a discussion that belongs to the Text app @nextcloud/office
I just change expandable section from not supported by markdown to implemented. We use the github syntax there now:
<details> <summary>This is visible when collapsed</summary> This will be collapsed. </details>
So 'not supported by markdown' is not necessarily a hard blocker.
So what remains as not supported by markdown right now is
text alignmentandtext colorif i read it correctly.Text alignment is possible in tables. We support rtl autodetection for the rest and I am very hesitant to allow it outside of tables. I don't really see any use for it.
For highlighting paragraphs we have callouts, for emphasizing text we have emphasis, strong emphasis and underline. I'd be okay with making strong emphasis colorful - such as with the primary color - but a color picker for text color? That's also a hard sell.
In general my focus would be on semantic text. What's the semantic meaning of red text, vs. orange text vs. green text? In some situations People will define it and that's cool. I'm just worried it's more distracting than useful. I've seen quite a few wikis where people put lots of effort into making them nice and colorful and nobody cared because there was not much content and no community. My rule of thumb is collectives is for content and if you care about layout and design you can export it and use a different tool for that and pick your fonts, and everything for print for example.
Reacted by Marco@marcoambrosini I'm not very familiar with how the ecosystem of apps interact, how do Text and Collective work together? If Text is the editor, what is Collectives layering on or is it just adding organisation alongside the editor?
@max-nextcloud A lot of time those colours are just used by people to visually differentiate text to make it easier to parse documents. It doesn't need to be semantic in that case for them. Columns is probably the other major feature I see used in Notion-like apps. Some things can be solved in md-like formatting (customised fence blocks), but probably not well. But, it sounds like the goal isn't a direct Notion alternative or competitor anyway.
Data tables is the another major feature, which NC Tables is tackling. But editing in-line and not going to another app would be a must.
I asked because I've been exploring Notion alternatives and my view is that people really want an OS alternative that embodies the spirit of FOSS (not open core or VC backed). Collectives doesn't need to be that, but I'd love to see NC have that alternative!
Outside the scope of this, but has anyone looked into creating apps to work with Collectives?
@philiprenich collective uses text as a base and adds feature around it.

I would personally very much like collectives to be that eventually, but we do not have a clear roadmap at this time.

Desktop and mobile apps.
Offline support is being worked on at the moment but I do not know how long it'll take before we see a desktop or mobile app
Reacted by Philip RenichCan these features be added to the gap analysis table?
- Tables: text color
- Tables: backgroud color
This is possible in Notion, see this image:
Another related feature that is available in Notion (this could be listed in the gap analysis table below 'Text color'):
- Background color
This image shows how Notion does this:
Reacted by Marco and Fritz HeidenComments are now available so ✅ can be added to the table (@mejo-).

Collectives market analysis
What other software are we looking at?
✅ Added after feature gap analysis
Collection of embeddable content that is interactive
Needs communication with other apps like Talk which would also embed content like this.
Either the server or user has to be exposed, currently leaning towards exposing the user but with opt-out, because the server might be sensitive. To be discussed.
